Kellie walked out of the police station with the file tucked under her arm. She opened her apartment door and slowly walked inside. She set the file on the coffee table and fell into the couch. She stared at the file, not wanting to open it again. Hoping that maybe somehow, the name on it would change and everything would be okay. However, when she finally picked it up and the name ‘Michael “Sonny” Corinthos, Jr.’ stared back at her, she knew that it wouldn’t be. She was finally beginning to build a relationship with her niece, and now, the contents of the file could be responsible for completely destroying all hope of Karen letting her in.

“Joe, there you are, I’ve been trying to catch up with you for days now! Our schedules just keep conflicting,” Frank told him, joining his brother at the table in the hospital cafeteria, “So, how are things going?”
“You mean with Kevin? Well, he says I’m making progress and I’m really starting to believe him. Instead of being angry all the time, I’m starting to accept things the way they are. The little things that would normally set me off, I’m learning to deal with.”
“That’s great! I’m so glad that things are working out for you and that you’re ready to move on with your life.”
“What do you mean? Are you talking about giving up on Karen? I love her, Frank, I can’t just let her go without fighting for her.”
“She’s happy, Joe. Now, as much as I disapprove of her choice in men at the moment, that’s exactly what it is, her choice. Sonny seems to be making her happy and you should respect that.”
“I really don’t think that I can do that. I need to at least try to win her back. Show her I’ve changed.”
Frank just shook his head, not wanting to argue.
“Enough about me. What’s been going on in your life?”
“Work’s going great. I’m still getting the same incredible rush I got when I saved my first patient.”
“I know all about that. So, how about your personal life?”
“Well, I’ve started seeing someone. She’s intelligent, beautiful, funny…”
“And she’s interested in you? There’s got to be something wrong with her,” Joe teased.
“Ha ha. So far, I’ve found nothing wrong with her. She just moved here from Manhattan and she’s a detective on the PCPD.”
“Well, there you go, that’s what’s wrong with her!” Joe laughed and Frank couldn’t help but smile, “But seriously, does this woman have a name?”
“Kellie Wexler, Karen’s aunt.”

Karen was flipping through channels when there was a knock at the door.
“Karen!” Serena exclaimed hugging her sister, “We’re going to have so much fun tonight!”
“We sure are, kid. Go ahead and put your bag over there,” Karen told her pointing, “Hi Dad.”
“Hi Honey,” Scott said hugging her and smiling upon hearing her call him ‘Dad’, “So, this is the room you gave up the Firehouse for?”
“This is it. It’s small, but I’m not home very often, so I don’t mind it.”
“I should get going before Eve puts out a missing persons report on me. She told me that if I wasn’t back in five minutes, she’d leave without me! Come give me a hug, Applesauce.”
“Bye Daddy, I’ll miss you.”
“I’ll miss you, too, but you’ll have fun with your sister and Lucy and Kevin. Just remember to be good,” He said tapping the tip of her nose, causing her to giggle, “Alright, just because you’re all grown up doesn’t mean you get out of hugging your old Dad goodbye.”
“I hope you and Eve have a great trip.”
“Keep her in line. That little blonde one can be a handful! And you be good, too.” Scott tapped the tip of Karen’s nose, “I love you girls,” He said before stepping out the door.
“We love you too, Dad,” They called out in unison.
“Alright, it’s just you and me, Sis, what do you want to do?”
“Lets watch the scary movie!”
“Are you sure you’re not going to get too scared?” Karen asked her and Serena playfully rolled her eyes, “Okay, I’ll run downstairs and get us some soda and popcorn.”
Just after Karen left, the phone rang.
“Hello?’
“Hi, is Karen around?” Sonny asked guessing that the voice on the other end had to belong to Serena.
“She’s busy, may I ask who’s calling?”
“Can you please just tell her that Sonny called and I’ll call her again later.”
“Okay, bye.”
“Who was on the phone, Serena?” Karen asked handing Serena her cup.
“It was that dangerous man that I’ve seen on TV. Why is Sonny calling you?”

Chapter 28

Note-In this story, there was no General Homicide, therefore, no murders

“Well, ah…Sonny and I are friends, Serena. You can’t believe all of that stuff you hear on TV. Now, I’m not going to lie to you and tell you that he hasn’t made mistakes, but he is a really nice man and I think you will like him.”
“Are you really just friends or is he your boyfriend?”
“We’re…he’s…yes, he’s my boyfriend,” Karen decided to be honest.”
“So that’s why Daddy’s always calling your Mom. He doesn’t want you to be with Sonny.”
“He does have his reasons for not liking Sonny, but he knows that we’re very happy together.”
“Are going to get married? Having a mob boss for a brother’d be cool!”
Karen’s jaw dropped, but she was soon laughing at the excited look on Serena’s face. She playfully threw a pillow at her causing Serena to break into a fit of giggles and throw it back at her.
“I’m going to go grab the popcorn, why don’t you pop the movie into the VCR.”

“Frank? What are you doing here?” Kellie asked, surprised when she opened the door.
“I had remembered that you said you’d be home tonight, so I thought I’d bring you dinner. I hope you don’t mind me showing up like this, but I wanted it to be a surprise.”
“No, of course I don’t mind, some in. Smells good, Chinese?”
“Yes ma’am! Chinese food and beer, what more do you need?”
”A good ball game on TV,” Kellie replied getting the plates and silverware.
“You watch baseball?”
”I can’t miss my Nomar! That man is amazing.”
“Garciaparra? You’re a Red Sox fan? Oh Kellie, you’re killin’ me,” Frank pretended to look hurt, “Do you not know where you live?”
”I lived in Boston for a few years and that’s when I got hooked on baseball. I only made it to Fenway twice, but one of those games was against the Yankees. I can’t believe they want to rebuild the park! But then again, they tore down the Boston Garden so why not wreck Fenway, too!”
Frank didn’t respond, he only watched her with a smile on his face.
“What’s the matter?”
“Absolutely nothing. I’m just admiring how passionate you are about your opinions.”
“If only passion solved problems…”
“How do you mean?”
“It’s just a case at work that I was just assigned to. I could just tell the Commissioner that I’m too personally involved, but this is a huge case and he’s trusting me with it. But doing my job could cost me more then I can deal with.”
“Sounds like quite the dilemma. I think I have an idea as to who the subject of your case is, so I see why you’re in such a predicament.”
“Either way I lose, Frank. Most people would say it’s easy. Just give up the case because family comes first. But I’ve only skimmed through the file and I’ve learned enough about that man to know that he’s dangerous and he needs to be locked away for a long time. People have died because of who he is and I couldn’t live with myself if Karen was added to that list.
Now, on the other hand, how am I supposed to explain to her that putting her boyfriend behind bars is just part of the job?” Kellie explained, feeling a lump form in her throat, “How do I make my niece understand that I’m not doing this to hurt her?”
“I wish I knew what to tell you, Kellie, but this is a decision you have to make on your own. I will say that Karen is an incredibly strong woman and deep down, she will know that following through with this case is something you have to do.”
“I don’t know, Frank, I just don’t know what to do,” Kellie choked as the tears spilled over.
Frank took her in his arms and held her, letting her cry.

“Hey, no unauthorized personnel allowed back her!” Luke yelled barely looking up from behind his desk.
“Is that any way to treat your partner?”
“Sonny? Is that you? Gee, it’s been so long I’d forgotten what you looked like!”
“I’ve been busy and running the club is your job, remember?”
“Busy, huh? Did you finally find yourself a woman?”
“Only the most beautiful, intelligent, sensitive, talented doctor at GH.”
“Wow, hearing the big, bad Sonny Corinthos talking crazy like that could only mean one thing. You’ve been bitten by the love bug! So, who is it? Is it that Dr. Devlin? I tell you, if looks could kill…”
“No, it’s not Dr. Devlin. It’s Dr. Wexler.”
“Wexler? As in Karen Wexler?” Luke exclaimed as his eyes widened.
“The one and only. Believe me, if anyone’s surprised about how things turned out, it’s me and Karen.”
“Wait a sec…she’s Baldwin’s daughter isn’t she?” Sonny nodded, “The thought of you being with his little girl must be giving the man an ulcer! Oh I wish I could have seen his face when he found out.”
“He and Rhonda didn’t take it well, but they’ll have to learn to live with it because I’m in love with Karen and I’m not going anywhere.”
“I haven’t seen you this happy since…” Luke stopped before saying the name.
“It’s okay, Luke, you can say her name. You’re right, I haven’t been this happy since I was supposed to marry Brenda, but she’s gone and I have to move on with my life.”
“Well I’m glad that you found Karen. You two going to get married? That’d really send Baldwin over the edge…” Luke smiled slyly at the thought of Scott’s reaction.
Sonny just shook his head and laughed, giving Luke his moment.
