New Beginnings~Prologue and Chapter One
This is my first fan fiction. Please let me know what you all
think. This story takes place after the Miracles Happen arc. No bright
light appeared and no angels.
It deals mostly with Chris, Eve, Lucy, Kevin, Jack and Livvie.

PROLOGUE
The past year had been hell
for everyone. Caleb had nearly destroyed all their lives. But it was finally
over. Livvie had killed him with a stake through the heart. That was nearly
two months ago and since that time all the citizens of Port Charles were
putting their lives back together. Slowly but surely things were starting
to return to normal. Or as close to normal as things could be in this town.
CHAPTER ONE
Lucy woke slowly. She could
feel the warmth of the sun on her face. She stretched and opened her eyes.
She rolled over and smiled as she looked at her sleeping husband. She still
couldn't believe that she was Mrs. Dr. Collins. She had waited her whole
life for the perfect man and finally she had him. She leaned over and placed
a kiss to his lips.
Kevin opened his eyes. "Good
morning."
"Good morning, handsome."
He kissed her again. "Handsome
huh? I could get use to that." He pulled her to himself and kissed her
deeply.
She laughed. "And I could
definitely get use to this." She kissed him.
They made love to each other.
Sweet and slow and it was all the better because of everything they had
been through. It took them eight long years to get to this perfect place
and because of that they were going to enjoy it all the more and treasure
each other forever.
Livvie left Dr. Gail Baldwin's
office feeling totally free for the first time in two months. She had been
haunted by horrible nightmares and terrible guilt. Gail had been helping
her work through all that and she had. Today was her last session. She
knew now that she would be okay.
She hadn't been so sure
in the beginning. She had never felt so alone and so lost. Now she was
on the right path. Her dad was happy and so was she. Besides she had Jack
back and she didn't need another thing.
Jack. He had stood by her
through it all. It took a while but they had finally worked everything
out. They had spent an entire night just talking and in the end he was
still there. He had somehow found it in his heart to forgive her. If she
wasn't sure of his love before she was definitely sure of it now. There
was no doubt in her mind. Jack was her one true love.
She walked into the Bike
Shop with a huge smile on her face. "I'll be with you in a..." Jack looked
up from the cycle he was working on and saw Livvie. "Hello beautiful."
She wrapped her arms around
his waist and kissed him. "What time are you going to be done?"
"I can get out of here by
six if I hurry." He kissed her forehead lightly. "How was your appointment?"
She smiled. "All cured.
Gail said that unless I feel the need I can stop going."
He pushed her hair back.
"And how do you feel?"
"I feel wonderful." She
leaned back against the workbench. "I feel really together for the first
time in like six months." She looked up at him. "Thank you Jack."
He stepped towards her and
took her hand. "For what?"
She glanced down at their
fingers intertwined. "For being the most incredible man I've ever met.
You've been so good to me." She sighed. "And I didn't even deserve it.
I don't deserve you."
"Hey," he stopped her, "why
are you talking like this? We deserve each other." He put his hands on
her cheeks and forced her to look up at him. "I love you Livvie. Nothing
can ever change that." He leaned into her trapping her against the workbench
with his body. He kissed her long and hard.
When he pulled away she
was breathless. "Jack..." She kissed him again. "I love you so much."
"Okay we need to stop this
before I put you up on that bench and have my way with you."
She smiled up at him coyly.
"Promise?"
He laughed and kissed her.
"Stop that. I'm serious." He sighed and stepped back. "Are you going straight
home?"
"No I'm meeting Ali for
lunch and then I'll head home. You'll be there by 6:30 then?"
He nodded. "I should be."
She kissed him quickly.
"I'll have dinner ready and I have planned a very special dessert just
for you."
He smiled to himself as
she walked out. God, he loved her. His life couldn't be more perfect. He
had a successful business, a great house and the most beautiful woman in
the world by his side. Things couldn't be better.
Dr. Chris Ramsey had just
gotten off a fourteen hour shift at the hospital and was exhausted as he
entered his apartment. He quickly glanced through his mail and threw it
on the table. He then headed to the wet bar and proceeded to make one of
the best martinis he had ever had. Sitting back on the leather couch he
let out a sigh and sipped his drink. He missed Julie so much. That one
night with her hadn't been enough. He knew he had to move on. He had no
choice she was dying. There was no other option for the two of them.
He quickly downed the rest
of his drink and headed towards the bathroom. As he stepped into the hot
steaming shower he made the decision. He was letting go and moving on.
He had a few things to be grateful for and he had to concentrate on those.
He was a wealthy handsome doctor. That was a good start. His thoughts turned
to Jack. Why did he have to come to Port Charles and complicate his life?
The only thing that had ever mattered to him was his family. Everything
he had ever done in the past was for them. Not that he could ever let anyone
else know that. Maybe he should try harder with Jack. He really wasn't
all that bad. Afterall he was his brother. There had to be some of his
better qualities somewhere in Jack.
He toweled off and slipped
into his silk pajama bottoms and crawled into bed. Tomorrow he'd call Jack
and see what would happen. Who knew maybe he would actually get along with
his brother.
Jack entered through the
front door feeling exhausted. He could hear banging pans coming from the
kitchen. He threw his jacket over the rail and followed the sounds. He
stood in the doorway and saw Livvie trying very hard to salvage what looked
like dinner.
"Damn it." She swore as
she threw the pan into the sink.
Jack smiled to himself.
She was so consumed with what she was doing she didn't hear him come up
behind her and wrap his arms around her waist. He placed a kiss to her
neck.
She let out a gasp and glanced
over her shoulder. "Jack....you scared me."
"You weren't expecting someone
else were you?"
"Very funny." She turned
around in his arms and gave him a slight smile.
"So is dinner ready?" He
glanced at the mess on the counter.
She sighed. "What do you
think?"
"I think we can call for
pizza." He laughed.
Livvie pulled away from
him and leaned against the sink. "It's not funny Jack. I really wanted
to be able to make you a nice dinner and look at this mess."
"I'm not in love with you
Livvie for your cooking skills you know. I could care less whether you're
able to make a five course meal or not." He sat down on a chair at the
table.
"I care Jack. I want to
be able to do this one little normal thing for you. Alison makes it all
look so easy." She ran her fingers through her hair.
"Come here." He motioned
to her and she came over and stood between his legs. He put his hands on
her waist. "I understand that and I love the fact that you want to do it
for me. We'll work it out okay? Maybe Ali can give you some lessons or
something. All I want right this minute is you. Nothing else."
She leaned over and kissed
him. "That I can give do." She took his hand and pulled him up off the
chair. "How about if I start a shower for you and while you're doing that
I'll slip into something more comfortable?"
"That sounds incredible."
He followed her upstairs and into the bathroom.
She started the water and
turned around. Jack was standing there shirtless and barefoot in just his
jeans. She smiled at him. "You are so sexy." She kissed him slowly. Reaching
down between their bodies she unbuttoned his pants. "I thought you might
need some help with these." She kissed his neck, shoulder, chest and made
her way down his stomach till she was kneeling in front of him.
Jack was completely speechless.
Livvie wasn't usually the one to take charge in their relationship but
he had to admit he was enjoying this side of her. "Livvie..." he whispered
as he ran his hands through her hair.
She had his pants off in
a matter of seconds followed closely by his boxers. "Yes Jack."
He looked down at her. "What
are you doing?"
She raised her eyes to him.
"Just helping you relax." She then proceeded to take him into her mouth.
Jack almost lost it completely
right there. They had talked about this but had never done it and now he
couldn't believe what he'd been missing. God, her mouth felt so good. He
pushed his hands into her hair as he closed his eyes and let all the thoughts
in his head just go.
Livvie couldn't believe
the power she had over him. It felt so good to be in control like this.
Why had she waited so long to do this to him? All of a sudden Jack pulled
her to her feet and started kissing her. Livvie pulled back slightly. "Jack,
what's wrong? Was I not doing it right?"
He shook his head and kissed
her neck. "God no, you were doing it too right." He quickly helped her
undress and picked her up carrying her into the shower.
The water rushed over their
entwined bodies. Jack kissed her lifting her legs up around his waist as
he pushed her back against the tile. "I can't get enough of you Livvie."
She tightened her arms around
his back. "Make love to me Jack. Now."
She didn't have to ask twice.
He entered her in one swift stroke. "Oh God, Livvie you feel so good."
He pushed even deeper into her. He wanted to possess every inch of her.
He could spend the rest of his life making love to her and it would never
be enough. He could feel her reaching her climax and he rode it out with
her releasing his own need with hers.
She kissed him as they let
the water flow over them. "That was incredible." She kissed him again.
"You're the best."
"You're not too bad either.
What you did to me earlier...God Livvie you surprised the hell out of me."
He turned off the water and wrapped a towel around his waist as he stepped
out of the shower.
"Didn't you know...I'm full
of surprises." She grabbed a towel and headed for the bedroom.
They spent the rest of the
night in bed together. They never did get around to ordering the pizza
but neither of them were very hungry anyway.
It was Eve's first day back
at the hospital since Ian had been killed in that horrible car accident
on New Years Eve. She still couldn't think of it without crying. He was
gone from her life. She didn't know how she was going to go on but she
knew she had to for little Danny's sake. She was all he had and she would
be strong for him. He needed her more than ever before.
She approached the on call
room hesitantly. She hoped no one was in there. She just wanted to be alone
for a few minutes before her shift started. She took a deep breath and
pushed the door open. Damn there on the couch sat Chris. The last person
in the world she wanted to see.
He looked up from his file
when he heard the door. "Eve, welcome back."
She searched his face for
that look of pity everyone had been giving her and found it absent from
his face. "Thanks Chris." She opened her locker. "So how does it feel to
be Cheif Resident again?"
He stood up. "Great. Afterall
it was too much for you to handle and I worked hard for it." He stopped
at he door and looked back at her. "Just so you know Dr. Lambert I don't
plan on giving you any special treatment. Do your job and we'll get along
just fine." He left her there without a backwards glance.
She smiled to herself for
the first time in over a month and silently thanked Chris Ramsey for not
treating her like she was made of glass. Sometimes Chris was an okay guy.
Who would have thought that? She put on her doctors coat and grabbed her
stethoscope heading to the main desk. She could do this. One day at a time.
Lucy and Livvie had taken
Serena and Christina shopping for the morning. Lucy felt so lucky to have
her "girls" with her. The three of them were not her biological children
but they couldn't be any more hers. Livvie had been so wonderful with Christina
today. They had bonded so quickly.
They went to the Recovery
Room to have lunch. They all sat down at a table. Christina and Serena
immediately took out the crayons and paper and started drawing pictures.
Lucy and Livvie ordered as the girls chatted and colored. Livvie smiled
at Lucy. "So how's married life going?"
Lucy's face lit up. "Oh
Livvie it couldn't be better. Doc has been the best husband ever and believe
me I've had my fair share."
"Yeah I guess you have.
I always knew the two of you were perfect for each other." She took a sip
of her drink. "I just wanted you to know Lucy that I consider you much
more than just my dad's wife. You have been so good to me in so many ways.
I don't know what I would have done without you these past few months."
Lucy squeezed her hand.
"We make a good team and I know I'm not your mother, Livvie, but I do love
you like a daughter."
Livvie leaned over and gave
Lucy a hug. "I'm so lucky to have my dad and you in my life."
Lucy felt tears welling
up in her eyes. "Stop that you're going to get me started with the waterworks."
Livvie smiled. "Besides
there is no better shopper in the world than you."
"Well if there is one thing
I'm good at it's shopping." She pushed her chair back. "I'm going to use
the ladies room. Can you keep an eye on the girls?"
Livvie nodded. "Of course."
Lucy started to get up and
suddenly felt extremely lightheaded she plopped back down. "Oh that was
weird."
"Are you okay? You look
really pale all of a sudden."
Lucy put her hand to her
head. "It felt like I was going to faint." She shook her head. "I've been
so tired lately. I think I'm coming down with some kind of bug or something."
She took a deep breath.
Livvie motioned for the
waiter and got Lucy a glass of water. "Here try this."
Lucy took a long drink.
"Gosh I guess I need more sleep. I haven't had much of that lately." She
laughed nervously.
Livvie rubbed Lucy's back.
"You have to take care of yourself. The last thing you need is to get sick."
"Yeah." Lucy knew something
wasn't quite right. She had been so tired lately and just not feeling well.
She made a mental note to make an appointment with her doctor. Something
was definitely not right with her.
Chris noticed Eve signing
out. He felt horrible for her. He was never good in these kinds of situations.
He didn't know what to say to her so he just ignored the fact that Ian
was dead and treated her like he always had with his usual Ramsey charm.
He approached her. "So Dr. Lambert how was your first day back?"
She turned to face him.
"You know it actually went very well. A part of me missed this place. Getting
back to the routine has felt really good."
He put the files on the
desk. "So would you like to go have some dinner. PC Grille. My treat."
"You mean you're going to
open that wallet of yours and actually spend money on me. I definitely
can't pass that up. Let me call Beth and see if she would be willing to
stay with Danny for a couple of more hours. I'll meet you in the on call
room."
Chris smiled. "Sounds good."
He left her at the desk and went to gather his things. What the hell was
he thinking asking Eve to go to dinner with him? Was he crazy? What the
hell were they going to talk about? Ian? Julie? There own messed up relationship?
God help him this was going to be the longest night of his life.
A half hour later they were
seated at their table facing each other. Chris had ordered a very good
wine. He held up his glass. "A toast."
Eve picked up her glass
as well. "To what Ramsey?"
"How about to new beginnings?
We're both starting over in a way. Not by choice mind you but here we are."
She touched her glass to
his. "Here we are." She took a sip of her wine. "That is very good."
"Well for the price I'm
going to pay it damn well better be good." He smiled at her.
Eve shook her head. "Will
you ever change Ramsey?"
He took a drink. "God I
hope not." He leaned towards her. "So what do you think about the new interns?
The blonde girl is pretty hot. I wouldn't mind a piece of her."
Eve made a face. "Please
Chris do you mind? Too much information." She folded her napkin across
her lap. "Although I have to admit the darkhaired guy, I think his name
is Robert, now he was hot."
They both laughed. They
spent the rest of the meal bantering back and forth. It felt like old times
for both of them. By the time they had finished dessert Chris had to admit
that he was sad to see the night end. He paid the bill and finished his
drink.
Eve glanced at her watch.
"Gosh it's getting late. I have to get home to Danny."
Chris stood up and helped
her on with her coat. "I understand."
Eve took a deep breath.
"Thanks for everything Chris. I had a really nice time."
Chris shrugged. "I didn't
do anything except pay."
Eve put her hand on his
arm. "I mean thanks for helping me forget even if it was only for a few
minutes. I really needed this."
He smiled sheepishly at
her. "Your welcome. Come on I'll walk you to your car."
Eve smiled as she walked
out of the restaurant. She had had a great night and now she was going
to head home and put her beautiful baby boy to bed. She could do this.
She knew she could.
Chris had just sat down on
the couch when the phone rang. He picked up secretly hoping it might be
Eve. "Hello?"
"Well hello there Christopher."
Chris' heart fell he'd recognize
that voice anywhere. "What do you want? And why the hell are you calling
me?" His palms were starting to sweat.
He heard a snicker on the
other end. "Now Christopher is that any way for a boy to speak to his daddy.
C'mon now."
Just like that Chris was
transported to that little boy, frightened and all alone. "I don't know
what you want Henry but if you ever call here again I'll..."
"You'll what? Change your
number? Move? C'mon Christopher I'll always find you. You're my pride and
joy. My first born son. You didn't think I'd just go away quietly did you?"
There was a pause. "Besides I believe you took something that belonged
to me when you left town."
Chris stood up and started
pacing. "I didn't take a damn thing from you. Everything I have is mine.
Do you understand me you bastard?"
"No Christopher you understand
this...when you left you took Jack and I know he's living in Port Charles
with you. You stole my chance at being a proper father to him and now I
plan to rectify that." He laughed.
Chris felt the anger that
he had supressed inside of himself for years start to overflow. "You listen
to me you son-of-a-bitch you never knew how to be a father. I took Jack
to give him something better. Something other than a drunk, gambling abuser
like you. You destroyed everything you touched. I protected Jack. If you
think I'm going to let you mess things up for him now you're crazier than
I thought."
"Well, I think that that
will have to be Jack's choice now won't it? He's not some twelve year old
kid you can just whisk away. He's a grown man."
Chris knew that if Henry
Ramsey had been in front of him right at that moment he would have strangled
him to death with his bare hands. "I mean it Henry stay out of our lives
and don't ever call here again." He slammed the phone down onto the table.
He then picked up his martini glass and threw it at the wall. It shattered
all over the floor. Chris wanted to scream. He hated that man more than
anyone else in the world. He had to talk to Jack and warn him. God forbid
if Henry reached him first. He glanced at the clock. It was too late now
to call. He'd stop over to see him first thing in the morning. He headed
off to bed knowing he wouldn't get any sleep at all.
Lucy was waiting in the doctor's
office. She was nervous. Not so much because she was scared of bad news
but because she was afraid that maybe she was starting to go through the
whole "change". She knew it was early but she had read it could happen
as early as late 30's. It made her sad to think of that happening to her
body. She was lost deep in her thoughts when Dr. Sanderson came in. She
smiled at Lucy and sat down behind the desk. "Well Mrs.Collins I have all
of your results right here. I'm happy to tell you that we were able to
rule out any serious illness. As a matter of fact you are the perfect picture
of health."
Lucy let out a breath she
hadn't realized she was holding. "Oh, thank the Universe for that. So what
is it? Is it the early stages of menopause."
Dr. Sanderson laughed. "No
not at all. Actually it's the exact opposite."
Lucy looked confused. "Opposite?
What are you saying?"
"You're pregnant. Congratulations."
Lucy knew she couldn't have
heard correctly. "What? What are you talking about?"
Dr. Sanderson stood up.
"You're going to have a baby Mrs. Collins."
Lucy thought she was going
to faint. "But that's impossible. The drug Rachel gave me...I can't conceive."
"Well you did. That drug
was not well researched obviously and who knows what the life of the strain
was. What I do know is you are definitely, without a doubt, one hundred
percent pregnant." She stepped around her desk.
Lucy jumped up and hugged
her. "Oh thank you, thank you, thank you!"
Dr. Sanderson laughed again.
"You're welcome. But I didn't have much to do with it. You and Dr. Collins
on the other hand deserve the credit."
"Oh my gosh, Doc! I have
to tell Doc! He's going to be a father. This is one of the happiest days
of my life. I have to go."
Dr. Sanderson held up her
hand. "Before you do I want you to make an appointment for next week. We'll
get you started on all the prenatal stuff and here's a prescription for
vitamins and some pamphlets you should read."
Lucy took it all and shoved
it in her handbag. She quickly made her appointment and rushed out. She
was delirious! She was having a baby of her very own and not just any baby
but Doc's baby.
Jack was totally engrossed
in his work when he heard his name. He looked up and saw Chris standing
there. This was a complete surprise. Chris and him had been trying to mend
their relationship but he had never come down to the Bike Shop before.
"Hey what brings you here?" He picked up a rag and wiped off his hands.
"I need to talk to you Jack.
It's kind of important."
Jack leaned against the
bench. "Okay. So what's up?"
Chris looked around the
shop. "Is anyone else here?"
Jack didn't know what was
going on but Chris was acting very strange. "Jamal ran across town for
some parts. I'm the only one here at the moment. What is going on with
you?"
"I got a phone call last
night." He stopped.
Jack held up his hands.
"And?"
Chris took a deep breath.
"And it was Henry." He searched Jack's face for his reaction and he could
see the anger immediately.
"What the hell did that
bastard want?" He threw the rag down.
"He said he's coming here.
I guess he suddenly wants to play father knows best or something."
Jack shook his head. "This
is just perfect. I don't need this right now. Things are finally getting
back to normal and now this."
Chris knew how he felt.
"Look, Jack, let me handle him."
Jack picked up a wrench
and threw it into the tool box. "How are you going to handle him, Chris?"
"Well, I know he'll come
to me as soon as he gets into town. I'll offer him a large sum of money
on the condition that he leaves us alone. If I know him like I think I
do he'll take it and leave."
Jack nodded. "Yeah that
will work until he gambles and drinks it away. Then he'll be back for more.
You know that is exactly what will happen. Then what do we do?"
Chris put his hand on Jack's
shoulder. "Look Jack I took care of you once before and I'll do it again.
That bastard is not going to come here and mess with our lives. I promise
you that." He took a deep breath. "I have to get to the hospital. Trust
me. If he makes any type of contact with you let me know okay?"
"Yeah okay." Jack sighed.
"Thanks for filling me in Chris."
Chris shrugged. "You're
my little brother if I don't look out for you who will?" He turned and
walked out.
Jack watched him leave.
He couldn't believe how far they had come. Maybe one day he could fulfill
the promise he made to his mother and they could be a real family. That
was if Henry Ramsey didn't come along and mess everything up.
CHAPTER TWO
Lucy had spent the last two
days making preparations. It had been so hard to keep her secret but she
wanted everything to be absolutely perfect when she told Doc the good news.
A part of her enjoyed keeping this little piece of her a secret. She had
spent the time imagining every detail of the rest of their lives. What
a perfect family they were going to be. She knew Doc would be the best
father. He had already proven that with Livvie and Christina. She knew
how much it hurt him that he hadn't been a part of Livvie's upbringing.
Now he'd have another chance at that with their child.
It was Valentine's day and
the perfect date to tell him. Scott had agreed to take Christina for the
night. She had the perfect meal catered and ready. She had put on a gorgeous
red silk dress. There were candles lit everywhere. As she looked around
she decided everything was perfect.
She went over to the stereo
and put on some music. Just then Kevin walked in carrying two dozen of
the most beautiful red roses. "Lucy, I'm home."
She turned to face him.
"Happy Valentine's day, Doc." She crossed the distance between them. Wrapping
her arms around his neck she kissed him.
He handed her the flowers.
"I love you."
She took them and smelt
their heady scent. "And I love you. These are beautiful. Sit down while
I put these in some water. Dinner is ready."
He loosened his tie and
sat down at the table. Everything looked wonderful. Lucy returned a few
minutes later and sat down across from him. They ate dinner talking about
their days. Lucy ate very little because she was so excited about the baby.
When Kevin had finished
she stood up and took his hand. "Let's go sit over on the couch. I want
to talk to you about something."
Kevin looked up at her hesitantly.
"Uh oh that usually means trouble." He followed her over to the couch.
She sat down facing him.
"Not this time Doctor Collins."
He leaned over and kissed
her. "Have I told you how absolutely beautiful you look?"
She laughed. "About sixty
times tonight." She took his hand. "Doc, you know how much I love you don't
you?"
He nodded. "Yes I do."
"And there's nothing I need
or want than what is right here. I never knew true happiness nor complete
love until you. You are truly the most wonderful man I have ever known.
You have made every dream I have ever had come true. You married me and
let me into your life. You gave me Livvie who I couldn't love more if she
were my own." She smiled at him feeling her eyes well up with tears. "When
you brought Christina back to me I thought you could never top yourself.
You had given me the one thing I thought I would never have and I love
you for that. Then the other day I found out you had done it again. You
had given me yet another miracle." She wiped away the tear that had slipped
down her cheek.
Kevin was totally confused.
"What miracle are you talking about?"
Lucy took a deep breath.
"I went to the doctor the other day because I hadn't been feeling well
and I got the most incredible news."
Kevin squeezed her hand.
"What are you saying Lucy?"
"I'm pregnant Doc. We're
going to have a baby."
Kevin couldn't believe it.
He sat there hoping he had heard her correctly. "You and me. Lucy that
is a miracle. How?"
She shook her head. "I don't
know...I mean I do know I just don't care. All I'm sure of is your love
and our baby."
Kevin reached out and pulled
her to himself. "I can't believe this. I'm going to be a father again."
He kissed her. "Oh Lucy you have no idea how happy you have made me. There
is nothing I want more than a baby with you. You have given me the greatest
gift in the world. I'm going to have a chance at being a father from the
very beginning." He kissed her again. "I'm completely blown away. We have
to tell Livvie before anyone else."
Lucy nodded. "Of course.
I can't wait to tell her."
Kevin smiled. "A baby. Are
we ready for this?"
Lucy kissed him. "I've waited
my whole life for this. I'm more than ready."
Kevin leaned in and started
kissing her. "I can never thank you enough for this incredible gift Lucy.
But I'm going to spend the rest of my life trying."
They made love right there
on the couch in front of the fire. Nothing could ever be sweeter than this.
They had the rest of their lives together and it was only going to get
better.
**********************************************
Jack and Livvie had spent
the evening having dinner with Alison and Jamal. Jack had been particularly
quiet throughout the meal and on the drive home. As they entered the house
Livvie tried to make conversation. "Jamal and Alison seem to be really
happy."
Jack sat down on the couch.
"Yeah."
Livvie sat down on the coffee
table in front of him. "Hey you. What's going on in that head of yours?"
She pushed her fingers through his hair. "You've hardly said two words
tonight. Are you mad at me about something?"
"No it's not you. I just
have alot on my mind."
She put her hands on his
thighs. "What's wrong? Let me help you through this."
He looked into her beautiful
brown eyes. He didn't want to tell her about Henry and all his fears. He
wanted to keep her pure and innocent of his dark horrible past. "Livvie
really it's just the usual. We have so much to do at the Bike Shop. We
still haven't caught up. Then there's Chris. I know he's been having a
hard time since Julie left. I wish there was something I could do for him."
She took his hand. "We could
invite Chris for dinnier one night. We'll get him out and maybe help him
feel a little better. Okay?"
He leaned forward and kissed
her. "Do you know how much I love you?"
"I'm not sure. Maybe you
should refresh my memory." She kissed him.
He pulled her onto his lap
so she was straddling his thighs. "You are so beautiful. I still don't
know how I got you. Girls like you don't fall for guys like me. How did
I get so lucky?"
"I'm the lucky one. You
could've had any girl and yet you wanted me. Besides how could I have resisted
that dark, moody, bad boy that you were when you first came to town." She
started to unbutton her blouse. "I think I know something that might take
your mind off all your problems."
As she freed the last button
he shoved the blouse from her shoulders. "You think you have something
I want?" He kissed her neck pulling her blouse from her body. "I'm not
so sure I'm interested."
She pushed her hair back
and looked at him. "Oh I think you are." She reached behind her and unhooked
her bra letting it join her blouse on the floor. "Change your mind yet?"
He cupped her left breast
in his hand rubbing his thumb over her nipple. "I think you're the one
who's definitely interested. At least from what I can see." He cupped her
other breast and did the same thing. "You like that?" She nodded unable
to speak. "I thought you would." He kissed her hard. "I know you so well.
Better than myself sometimes." He kissed her again pushing his hands up
underneath her skirt cupping her bottom. Standing up he carried her upstairs
to their bedroom kissing her the whole way. He laid her on the bed and
made love to her. This was exactly what he needed. Livvie always made everything
so much better. He'd worry about Henry when the time came. Hopefully Chris
would take care of the problem and he would never have to deal with his
father again.
**********************************************
Chris was totally feeling
sorry for himself. He was alone on Valentines day and it sucked. Everywhere
he looked were people in love. He found his thoughts turning to Eve. He
knew she was alone tonight as well. He decided to order Chinese and take
it over to her place. There was no reason for them both to spend the evening
all alone.
Twenty minutes later he
found himself knocking on her door. He took a deep breath.
"Ramsey, what are you doing
here?" Eve asked from the other side of the closed door.
"I brought you dinner. Are
you going to let me in or not?"
Eve sighed. "I'm kind of
in the middle of something."
"Do you have someone over?"
"God, no." She unlocked
the door and pulled it open.
Chris laughed. There standing
in front of him was Eve with her hair tied back wearing a terry cloth robe
and a green mud mask on her face. "You look ridiculous."
She stepped aside and let
him in. "Thanks alot. I decided to pamper myself."
Chris set the bag on the
table. "Is that what you call that crap on your face?"
Eve shut the door. "Don't
make me regret letting you in." She came over and looked in the bag. "Smells
good. I'm going to check on Danny and get this stuff off my face. You can
set the table. There should be a bottle of wine in the fridge if you want
to open it."
He started into the kitchen
as she left. He found himself thinking of her. She really was great. They
had had some really good times together. When things went bad for him he
knew he could always talk to her about it. He went to open the refrigerator
and his eyes caught a picture of Eve, Ian, and Danny taped to the front
of it. They had been the perfect family. He really had no right to be thinking
of Eve in any way except as a friend. He shook his head pulled open the
door and got the wine. By the time Eve came back in everything was ready.
She had changed into sweats
and a tee-shirt. "Thanks for bringing this over I was just going to reheat
leftovers. This is much better."
"You're welcome. How's Danny?"
Eve smiled. "Sleeping like
an angel. Every time I look at him I'm in awe. He's perfect in every way."
"Aren't you the gushing
mother."
Eve put her fork down. "You
wait Ramsey till you have one of your own. Then you'll understand exactly
what I am saying."
Chris made a face. "God
forbid. Me and kids...are you crazy? I don't have room in my life let alone
my wonderful apartment for that."
Eve sighed. "Someday I'll
remind you you said that. You'll be the one to end of with five of your
own."
"Bite your tongue Lambert."
He took a sip of his wine. "Besides that will be Frank and Karen."
She laughed. "You're right
about those two."
They finished their dinner
and cleaned up finally collapsing on the couch. Eve glanced at Chris out
of the corner of her eye. "What are you thinking about Ramsey?"
"About you."
Eve was shocked. "Me? What
about me?"
Chris turned to look at
her. "I was just thinking how incredible you are. You've been through so
much in the last couple of months and you've just pulled it together. You're
a great mother and you've been handling work so well. How do you do it?
You're amazing."
Eve felt her eyes start
to well up with tears. "I miss him everyday but I tell myself that I have
to keep going. I have Danny to think about. I can't fall apart." She sighed.
"Somedays I think I won't be able to get out of bed and then I say stop
feeling sorry for yourself." She leaned her head against the back of the
couch. "You know there are people out there who have been through worse
things then this and I just try to keep it in prospective, you know."
Chris found himself wanting
to kiss her but he stopped himself. "It's late I should probably get going."
He stood up. "Besides don't you have and early shift tomorrow?"
She stood up as well. "Always
the slave driver aren't you Ramsey?"
He shrugged. "Someone has
to keep that hospital up and running."
Eve leaned forward and placed
a kiss to his cheek. "Thanks for dinner. It was wonderful."
Chris blushed slightly.
"That's two you owe me Lambert."
She nodded walking him to
the door. "Next one's on me. How about Saturday night?"
"I think my schedule is
clear." He knew it was. He slipped his coat on and stepped out into the
hall. "Saturday night then."
Eve smiled. "It's a date.
I'll see you tomorrow." She shut the door.
Chris stood there for a
moment. He was falling in love with Eve Lambert. He could feel it. He just
hoped he could convince her to feel the same way.
CHAPTER THREE
Jamal had just opened up
the Bike Shop when a man came in. Jamal looked up from reading a note Jack
left for him about some of the repairs. "Good morning. Can I help you?"
The man smiled. "I certainly
hope so. I'm looking for Jack Ramsey. Someone told me that I could find
him working here."
Jamal smiled. "Well you're
at the right place. Normally Jack would be here by now but he had an errand
to run. Is there something I could help you with?"
The man shook his head.
"No I'm sorry. I really need to talk to Jack."
Jamal nodded. "Okay I understand.
He should be back in an hour so if you'd like to come back then might be
better."
Just then the door flew
open and Livvie rushed in. "Hey Jamal. It's freezing out there." She noticed
the stranger. "I'm sorry you were in the middle of something." She smiled
at the man. "Hello."
He smiled back at her. "Hello
there. Aren't you just the prettiest thing I've ever seen."
Livvie blushed. "Thank you
that's very kind of you." She turned to Jamal. "I was just going to do
the books for you guys and help Alison if she needs it."
Jamal nodded. "The books
are on the desk. Did Jack leave on time this morning?"
"Yeah he did. Why?"
Jamal looked at the man.
"Mr....I'm sorry I didn't get your name."
The man held out his hand.
"Henry. Henry Ramsey."
Jamal and Livvie both stopped
dead in their tracks. They couldn't believe it. Jack's dad was standing
right here in front of them. Jamal realized that they were being terribly
rude. He shook Henry's hand. "Sorry it's just that Jack never metioned
that you were stopping by."
Henry smiled. "It probably
slipped his mind. I spoke to his brother Christopher the other day so I
know they knew I was coming."
Jamal glanced at Livvie.
She looked pale. "Well if you want to wait you can. By the way I'm Jamal
Woods, Jack's partner and friend and this is Livvie Locke, Jack's girlfriend."
Henry let his gaze rest
on Livvie. "Well it seems my boy has very good taste in women as well as
friends. It's nice to meet both of you."
Livvie nodded. "Yeah." She
went over to the desk, sat down and started to go over the accounts.
Henry looked at Jamal. "Maybe
I'll go get some coffee and come back in an hour or so."
Jamal forced a smile. "Yeah
that would probably be best. We have alot of work to do here and wouldn't
be the best company. Jack should be here when you get back."
Henry opened the door. "It
was nice meeting you Jamal and you to Miss Locke."
Livvie just glanced up at
him as he walked out. As soon as the door closed she got up. "Jamal what
is he doing here?"
Jamal shook his head. "I
don't know. Jack never metioned anything to me."
Livvie sighed. "Jack is
going to freak out. I have to call him and warn him." She started to pick
up the phone.
Jamal stopped her. "Livvie
calm down. Obviously Jack knew he was coming. Henry said he talked to Chris."
"Yeah and knowing Chris
like I do he probably didn't even tell Jack. It would be just like him
to do something like this to Jack. Besides if Jack had known he would've
told me and he never metioned anything about his father coming here. And..."
She stopped herself.
Jamal looked at her. "And?"
She shook her head. "You
know what I just asked him last night if something was bothering him and
he told me no. Remember at dinner how he was so quiet and moody." She sat
back down. "He did know and he lied to me last night. He said he was worried
about the shop and Chris. He never metioned anything about his dad."
Jamal knew if Jack kept
it to himself there was a good reason. He had to try and help Livvie understand.
"Look Livvie, I'm sure Jack is completely freaking out over all this. He
probably needed some time to sort it out in his head first before he dragged
you into it."
Livvie shook her head. "That's
not it. He's choosing to leave me out of his life."
"Out of his life? Livvie
he's living with you and I know how much the guy loves you. He is not shutting
you out of his life. You girls are all alike. Talk, talk, talk. Sometimes
we don't want to talk about things. Sometimes we just need to work things
out in our own heads first."
Alison walked in with a
tray of muffins. "What are you guys talking about?"
Livvie got up and walked
over to her. "Jack's father was just here."
Alison set down the tray.
"Oh my God. Are you serious? Does Jack know?"
"Apparently he does. Although
he didn't tell me about it." Livvie took a muffin from the tray.
Alison looked at Jamal who
rolled his eyes. She looked back at Livvie. "Look Jack is probably just
freaked by the whole situation. You know Jack he's never been a big talker."
Livvie sat back down. "Him
being upset about all this is exactly the reason why he should be talking
to me about it all." She sighed. "He probably thinks I can't handle it.
With my fragile mind and all." She was being sarcastic.
Jamal held up his hands.
"You are being ridiculous, Livvie. Give the guy some slack."
Livvie was ready to really
let him have it when Jack came in carrying a box. "Jamal I got the parts."
Jamal crossed the shop to
take the box. "Excellent man." He rolled his eyes towards Livvie. "She's
in a mood. Watch out." He took the box to the work bench and started working
with it.
Jack took off his jacket
and walked over to Livvie. "Hey beautiful." He leaned across the desk to
kiss her when Livvie got up and walked into the back room. Jack looked
at Alison. "What the hell is her problem?"
Alison shrugged. "I think
you need to talk to her."
Jack looked at Jamal. "So
what is going on?"
Jamal walked over to Jack
and put his hand on Jack's shoulder. "Look man, your dad came by."
Jack felt his stomach lurch.
"Oh God, did he do or say something to Livvie?"
Jamal shook his head. "No
bro, he was actually very polite. She just got it into her head that you
kept his coming here a secret from her because you don't want to share
your life with her or some crap like that. You know women."
Alison cleared her throat.
"I'm still here."
Jack groaned. "Great. That
is not why I didn't tell her. I was hoping Chris would deal with him before
I had to. He's not here even one day and he's already causing me problems."
Alison put her arm around
his waist and squeezed. "Just go talk to her. Explain what happened. I
think Livvie is just being overly sensitive. She's been through so much
you know."
"Exactly Alison. That's
why I was trying to protect her. I didn't want that awful part of my life
to touch her." He sighed.
Alison rubbed his back.
"We understand that. Now go tell Livvie so she can too."
He nodded. "You're right."
He went through the back room door. Livvie was sitting on a stool with
her head in her hands. He could tell she was crying. Jack hated seeing
her like this. He walked over to her and put his hands on her shoulders.
"Hey sweetie, don't cry. You know I hate it when you do."
She wiped her eyes. "Yeah
well I hate it when you keep things from me. We promised we would be honest
with each other and not keep secrets yet here we are."
He turned her around to
face him. "Livvie I wanted to keep you safe not hurt you. I haven't seen
that man who calls himself my father in like twelve years. I have no idea
what he wants or why he's here. I didn't want to poison the one good thing
I have in my life, which is you, with him. I hate him. I hate him for what
he did to my mother and I hate him for what he did to us kids. When I think
about it it fills me with so much anger that it scares me. And the last
thing I would ever want to do is scare you in that way. I was hoping Chris
would deal with him so I wouldn't have to expose you to all this. Do you
understand why I didn't tell you?"
She nodded wiping her eyes
once more. She stood up and wrapped her arms around him. "Oh Jack, I'm
so sorry. I just want to be there for you the way you've always been there
for me." She kissed him. "I can't support you and help you if you don't
let me in." She stepped back. "Jack if we are going to make a life together
then we have to be open about everything. None of us have a perfect family.
I mean look at mine. You don't get any more dysfunctional then me." She
placed her hands on his face. "We can do this together. We can face whatever
Henry Ramsey is going to throw at you, together."
He pulled her to himself.
"God I love you so much. I don't know what I would ever do if I lost you."
"Well you'll never have
to find out because I'm not going anywhere. You're stuck with me."
He kissed her. "There's
nowhere else I'd rather be." He took her hand and led her back to the shop.
Jamal and Alison looked
at the two of them. Alison very hesitantly asked. "So..is everything okay?"
Jack put his arm around
Livvie. "Yes everything is perfect."
Just then Henry Ramsey walked
through the door. He stopped seeing Jack standing there. "Well, hello there
son."
Jack took a deep breath.
"What are you doing here Henry?"
Henry smiled. "I came to
see my boy. I wanted to know how you were doing."
Jack held up his hands.
"Well as you can see I'm just fine so you can go now."
Henry looked at everyone
and then at Jack. "Son, is there somewhere we could go just to talk privately?
Just the two of us."
Jack shook his head. "I
don't think so. I have nothing to say to you."
Henry took a step towards
him and then stopped. "Please, I just want a chance to get to know you
again."
Jack smirked. "Get to know
me again? Are you out of your mind? After all the shit you've pulled you
think you can walk back in here and start over? I don't think so."
Livvie put her arm around
Jack's waist. "I think it's best if you go, Mr. Ramsey. Jack doesn't want
you here."
"And I think you better
mind your own business little girl."
Jack lost it. He grabbed
Henry by the front of his shirt. "Don't you ever talk to her that way again.
Do you understand me? As a matter of fact if I ever see you so much as
glance at her I'll kill you. You stay the hell away from me and everyone
I care about." He let go of his shirt. "And that includes Chris." Jack
walked over to the door and pulled it open. "Now get the hell out of here."
Henry just stood there. Jack took a deep breath. "Now!"
Henry straightened his shirt
and walked over to the door. He looked at Jack. "I'm not going anywhere.
And no matter how much you deny it you're my son and that makes us family."
"Get out." Jack slammed
the door behind him.
Livvie rushed over to Jack.
"Are you okay?"
He nodded. "Yeah I'm fine.
I have to call Chris and let him know about this."
"Of course. I was going
to have lunch with my dad and Lucy but I'm going to cancel and stay here
with you."
"No." He kissed her. "You
go have lunch with them. We have alot to do here. I'll see you at home
tonight."
She glanced up at him. "Are
you sure?"
He nodded. "Yes I told you
I'm fine."
"Alright." She kissed him.
"I love you Jack."
He squeezed her hand. "Yeah
me too."
Livvie grabbed her coat
and handbag and left. Alison returned to her baking leaving Jamal and Jack
alone.
Jamal could tell Jack was
still upset. "Hey man do you want to talk about it?"
Jack started going through
invoices. "Not really."
Jamal started to cross the
shop. "I understand Jack but if you need someone to talk to, someone objective,
I'm here for you."
"Thanks I really appreciate
that." Jack went back to the invoices. He spent the rest of the day taking
out his frustrations on his work. Nothing went right. It seemed like everything
was falling apart.
**********************************************
Lucy and Kevin were sitting
at their table at the PC Grille waiting for Livvie. Lucy was glowing. She
was absolutely radiant. She squeezed Kevin's hand. "How do you think Livvie's
going to react to our good news."
Kevin put his arm around
her shoulders. "She's going to be estatic just like her dad. I still can't
believe it."
Lucy put her hand to her
stomach. "I know. I still think someone is going to pinch me and I'm going
to wake up and find out that this is all a dream. I mean right now there
is a little piece of us growing inside of me." She stopped and looked at
Kevin. "Doc, let's not tell anyone else but Livvie for right now. If something
were to happen I just couldn't..."
"Hey nothing is going to
happen. We have waited for this miracle for far too long. But I agree with
you. We'll tell Livvie and that's it." He kissed her temple. "Then when
you decide the time is right we'll tell the whole world."
Lucy sighed. "I love you
Doc."
"I love you Lucy." He kissed
her.
"Sorry to interrupt."
They looked up to see Livvie
standing there. Kevin got up and gave her a kiss. "You are not interrupting
a thing." They sat down. Kevin looked at his daughter. "You're late. Don't
you own a watch?"
Livvie held up her wrist
showing him her wristwatch. "I'm sorry. Jack had a small problem to deal
with this morning."
Lucy could tell something
was wrong. "What kind of problem?"
"His father showed up at
the Bike Shop."
Kevin didn't like the sound
of this. "What happened?"
"Jack basically threw him
out of the shop and told him not to come back. I don't think that's going
to keep him away though." She took a sip of her water. "When I think of
all the horrible things he did to Jack and his mom." She shook her head.
"I just worry about how Jack is going to handle all this." She ran her
fingers through her hair. "I don't know I'm probably overreacting like
I always do."
Kevin glanced at Lucy and
then back at his daughter. "You know honey if Jack wants to talk to someone
about his childhood and what happened to him I'm always available."
Livvie unfolded her napkin
and laid it across her lap. "Yeah like Jack would do that because we all
know what an open kind of guy he is."
Lucy smiled sympathetically.
"Well you do have a point there. Jack's more the 'I can take on the world
all by myself ' kind of guy."
Kevin reached across the
table and took Livvie's hand. "Just promise me that if things get too out
of control you'll at least talk to me."
Livvie nodded. "You know
I will. I know we're not here to talk about me and my problems. So?"
Lucy smiled. "So let's order."
Livvie knew there was something
going on. "Is there something you guys wanted to talk to me about?"
Lucy took Kevin's hand.
"Actually there is." She looked at Kevin. "Go ahead you tell her."
"Tell me what? Come on you
guys you're killing me."
Kevin took a deep breath.
"We have some very good news we wanted to share with you."
Livvie was on the edge of
her chair. "What? What news?"
"Lucy is pregnant. We're
going to have a baby."
Livvie was shocked. She
jumped up and went around the table to hug Lucy and her father. "Oh you
guys this awesome. I'm going to have a little brother or sister." She sat
back down. "I'm so happy for you guys."
"We're pretty happy and
excited too." Kevin looked at Lucy. "We wanted to tell you first."
Lucy wiped a tear from her
cheek. "These hormones are killing me. We're going to wait to tell everyone
else though. I want to get through the first trimester and all that."
Livvie nodded. "Yeah of
course. Wow a baby. Lucy I know how much you've wanted a child of your
own."
"Yeah I have." She paused.
"You know Livvie I want you to be a part of all this. You are so important
to both of us." She smiled. "Besides I plan on using you and Jack for alot
of babysitting."
"Are you kidding? Sign us
up. We'll be there whenever you need us."
They spent the rest of the
meal talking about the nursery, clothes and baby names. Kevin watched them
in awe. He truly had the most wonderful family.
**********************************************
Chris was just finishing
up his shift. He was going straight home to get ready for his night out
with Eve. The last two days had been completely unbearable. He had all
these feelings for her. Every time he saw her he literally couldn't breath.
When did this all happen? He was usually so in control and together. He
really hated the whole "love" thing. It really messed with your head not
to metion your heart.
**********************************************
Eve realized she was actually
nervous. Karen had just come by to pick up Danny. She offered to him overnight
and before Eve knew it she had taken her up on it. Now she was regretting
her decision. Maybe she should call her and tell her she'd pick him up
later. She grabbed the phone and started to dial. Then she hung up. A night
with no responsibilities could be good for her.
She glanced at the clock.
Chris would be here any minute. He was always punctual. She checked the
mirror one last time. She was wearing a new black dress and black slingbacks.
She had to admit she looked great. Why did she care how she looked? This
was Ramsey. Why did she care what he thought of her and how she looked?
She sighed and realized that she did care and she wanted him to notice.
The doorbell rang. She picked
up her evening bag and opened the door. Chris was speechless. She looked
absolutely beautiful. "Eve you look..."
She smiled. "Yes."
He swallowed the lump in
his throat. "Unbelievably gorgeous."
Eve was now the one who
was speechless. She searched his features for a sign of insincerity but
there was none. He had meant what he said. "Thank you."
He offered her his arm.
"Shall we?"
She looped her arm through
his and closed the door as they left and for the first time in nearly three
months she didn't think of Ian at all.
**********************************************
They had dinner at a little
Italian restaurant on the outskirts of town. Chris loved the fact that
no one here knew them. It was just the two of them. They were sitting in
a booth in the back corner. They had laughed and talked all through dinner.
Not to metion the fact that they had consumed a lot of red wine. Eve was
definitely feeling the effects. It had been so long since she had drank
and felt so free. She leaned her head on Chris' shoulder. "You know what
Ramsey?"
Chris looked down at her.
"What Lambert?"
"I really like you."
Chris breathed in the scent
of her hair. "Yeah I really like you too."
She sat up. "No I mean it."
She took another sip of her wine. "I mean you can be overbearing, insensitive,
manipulative and a complete ass sometimes. But all that aside, underneath,
you're a really great guy."
Chris smiled. "Well thank
you. I think there was a compliment in there somewhere."
She leaned towards him.
"There was." She became serious. "You have really made me feel good for
the first time in a really long time."
He leaned forward and placed
his lips against hers. The kiss started out sweet and innocent but turned
heated and passionate. Chris wrapped his arm around her and pulled her
close. The taste of the wine on her lips was all the sweeter. Suddenly
he realized what he was doing and pulled back. The last thing he wanted
was to take advantage of the situation. She had been drinking and just
lost her husband not that long ago. What was he thinking?
Eve opened her eyes and
looked at him. "Why did you stop?"
Chris sat back to give them
some distance. "Because you are not thinking very clearly right now. You've
had alot of wine and food and..."
She started kissing him
again. When she pulled away she smiled at him. "I am thinking very clearly
right now Chris Ramsey."
"Okay." He took her hand.
"Look Eve, I don't want to mess anything up with you. Right now you're
feeling happy and wonderful but how are you going to feel tomorrow morning?"
Eve squeezed Chris' hand.
"Look Chris, I know you're thinking I'm not over Ian and I'm rebounding
and all that. But I can honestly look at you right at this moment and tell
you that I have genuine feelings of affection for you." He started to pull
away and she stopped him. "When I think about all we have been through
with each other it only makes sense that we would end up here together."
"Eve, " Chris started.
She put her finger to his
lips. "Don't. Don't ruin this perfect night. Let's not talk anymore. We
have always been there for each other and thats the way it's always going
to be." She picked up her glass and finished her wine.
Chris paid the bill and
they left. He was lost in his thoughts on the ride back to Eve's. Maybe
this could work out for them. Maybe they could start fresh. He walked her
to her door. She unlocked it and stepped inside. "Do you want to come in?"
He shook his head. "I don't
know if that would be a good idea."
She took his had and pulled
him inside closing the door. "I think it's a great idea." She threw her
coat on the chair followed by evening bag. She turned to face Chris. "Relax
Ramsey, I don't bite."
He sat on the couch. "That's
very funny Lambert. Especially after everything that happened last summer
around here."
She laughed and plopped
down next to him. "That's another thing I like about you Chris. Your incredible
sense of humor." She smiled at him. "Hey I forgot it was my turn to pay."
Chris nodded. "Yeah I figured
it was a good way to get you to go another date with me."
"Oh so that was your plan,
huh?" She laid her head back. "I want you to know Chris that Ian and I
were having alot of problems before he died. Things were far from perfect
for us. We were falling apart. I just want you to know that I'm not sitting
here pining away for some saint."
He turned towards her taking
her face in his hands. "Eve I don't expect you to just forget about Ian
just like that. I would love to see how this works." He kissed her. "Just
you and I." He kissed her again only this time longer and deeper. He ended
the kiss and stood up. "But I want to take things slow. I don't want to
rush it. I want things to work out for us."
Eve got up and took his
hands in hers. "I like the sound of that word."
"What word?"
"Us. It sounds nice." She
kissed him. "I had a great time tonight."
"Me too." Chris kissed her
cheek lightly and headed to the door. "I'll call you tomorrow."
She nodded. "You better."
"Goodnight." He left her
apartment leaving Eve with a feeling of pure elation. Who would've ever
thought her and Chris Ramsey? Karen was going to love this one. She'd keep
it to herself for a while longer. She didn't want to hear one of Karen's
famous lectures about the evils of getting involved with Dr. Chris Ramsey.
**********************************************
Chris was meeting Jack early
this morning at Kelly's. Jack was already there when he arrived. He had
gotten a table and was drinking a cup of coffee.
Chris sat down across from
him. "You're here early."
Jack leaned back in his
chair. "I couldn't sleep."
After they had ordered Jack
immediately questioned Chris. "So what have you found out?"
"Can't I enjoy my morning
paper first Jack?"
Jack leaned forward. "Come
on Chris just tell me what you found out."
He set the paper down. "Alright
my man said he has rented a room near the docks and has been looking for
work down there. He also said that Henry's been clean for about two years
now. No runins with the law at all. Not even so much as a speeding ticket.
Which seems very strange to me. He never walked the straight and narrow
before so why now?"
Jack shook his head. "I
don't know. Maybe he just hasn't been caught recently."
"No my guy is good he would've
found out if he was running something. Unfortunately that means we can't
use any illegal activity of his to run him out of town. So I say we go
back to plan A and offer him a ton of money to leave town.
"Fine. I guess we don't
have any other choice do we?" Jack just wanted him gone.
"No we don't."
Their food came and they
ate making some small talk. Jack always felt strange just hanging out with
Chris. He had spent so much of his life resenting him it was hard to get
over it but slowly he was.
The door opened and in walked
Henry. He approached their table. "Well isn't this my lucky day? Both my
sons together having breakfast."
Jack set down his fork.
"What do you want?"
"What every father wants
Jack. A relationship with his children."
Chris looked at him over
the top of his paper. "Sit down Henry." Henry and Jack both looked surprised.
"Are you buying me breakfast Christopher?" Henry smiled.
Chris folded up his paper.
"Sure I'll buy you breakfast. Jack and I are also going to make you a very
handsome offer."
Henry looked at both of
his sons. "Oh you are are you? What's being offered?"
Chris took a sip of his
coffee and very calmly said, "One hundred thousand dollars."
Jack started to choke on
the orange juice he had been drinking. He couldn't believe what Chris had
just offered Henry. Was he crazy? A hundred grand?
Henry looked at Jack. "Well
it seems I'm not the only one who's shocked. What do you want in exchange
for that money Christopher?"
Chris put his hands on the
table. "It's fairly simple. You leave town for good. Forget we ever exsisted."
he could tell Henry was thinking about it. "It's alot of money. More than
you will ever see in your miserable lifetime. Just think of everything
you could do with money like that. You'd be stupid not to take it and run."
Slowly a smile crept across
Henry's face. "No Chris I think you have it wrong. I think you're the one
who's stupid if you think a little cash is going to keep me from the two
of you. Besides I think I'm beginning to really like Port Charles."
Jack was trying hard to
control his temper. "A hundred grand is not 'a little cash' Henry. I know
what you are trying to do you slimy bastard. You're trying to hold out
for more money and we're not giving you another penny. That's it the offer's
on the table take it or leave it."
Henry folded his arms across
his chest. "You keep using that 'we' word Jack. How much of this hunred
thousand is coming out of your pocket?"
Jack leaned forward. "You
son-of-a-bitch I..."
Chris held up his hand.
"Okay, Jack calm down. Sit back and relax."
Jack reluctantly sat back.
Chris made a decision. He wasn't going to fight this. Henry wanted to be
in their lives fine he'd make sure he regretted every minute of it. "You
know what Jack. Maybe we're going about this all wrong. Henry clearly wants
to be a part of our lives who are we to deprieve him of family."
Jack looked at Chris as
if his head were spinning. "Have you completely gone crazy?"
Chris shook his head. "Not
at all. I'm completely sane." He turned to Henry. "Enjoy your breakfast."
He stood up. "Jack I'll walk you out."
Jack stood up and followed
Chris outside. The minute they were out the door Chris turned to Jack.
"Look you have to calm down. We have to think rationally about all this."
Jack shook his head. "You're
right Chris. I'm sorry. I just get so angry."
Chris patted his brother
on the shoulder. "I know I do too. I'm just not the agressive, physical
type. You have to keep it together."
Jack took a deep breath.
"Okay so what now?"
"I'm going to make a few
calls. First one to Mac Scorpio to let him know what kind of trouble just
came to town. As you know from personal experience the PCPD can make your
life hell. I think Henry could definitely use some of that. Then I'm going
to see if we can't get him involved in some less than desirable situations.
You know what I mean?"
Jack smiled. "Yeah I think
I do. I've also experienced that thanks to you."
Chris sighed. "You know
I feel bad about all that. You're my little brother and even if I don't
say it I'm glad to have you around."
Chris turned and walked
away leaving Jack there stunned. It wasn't like chris to express his feelings
like that. Maybe there was a bright spot to Henry's coming to town. It
was definitely bringing the two of them together.
CHAPTER FOUR
Livvie walked through the
door carrying no less than ten shopping bags. Lucy and her had spent the
entire day getting new spring wardrobes. Lucy had decided she only had
a couple of months to still look fabulous and she went all out. They even
had their hair and nails done.
She sent the bags down and
called for Jack. His bike was parked out front so she knew he was home.
When he didn't answer she ran upstairs and to their bedroom. He was probably
napping. She stepped into the room and there on her dressing table were
the most beautiful white roses. She crossed the room to smell the flowers
and saw a note taped to her mirror. She read it. "Livvie, meet me at our
special spot. Love you, Jack". She smiled to herself. "What are you up
to Jack Ramsey?" She ran downstairs, grabbed her coat and ran out the door.
She hurried down the bank and around the corner to find Jack sitting at
the edge of the river.
He turned and stood up at
the sound of her approaching. "Hey you." He smiled at her as she wrapped
her arms around him. "You look beautiful." He kissed the top of her head.
She looked up at him. "What's
going on?"
He shrugged. "Nothing why?"
"Jack you are up to something.
I mean the flowers, the note, having me meet you here."
He took her hand and led
her to a large rock. He pushed her gently back to sit on it. He knelt down
in front of her. "I just wanted a few minutes alone with you here." He
kissed the inside of her wrist. "After our talk the other day I started
to think about a lot of stuff. I realized after all we've been through,
especially last year, how short and precious life is. We only have so much
time and we only go through this life once. Which led me to the thought
of you and how much I need you in my life."
"Oh Jack, I need you too.
You do know that?" She put her hand against his cheek.
He nodded. "I do. You have
literally changed my life Livvie. Before I met you I was lost and alone.
I didn't care about anything or anyone. From the first moment I laid eyes
on you I knew you were the one." He reached into his coat pocket and held
up his mother's ring. "The last time I tried this it didn't go quite as
I had planned so I'm going to try again." He looked into her eyes which
had filled up with tears. "I love you Livvie and I want to spend the rest
of my life proving that to you. Will you let me? Will you marry me?"
Livvie couldn't breath.
She was completely shocked. "Jack," she started to cry, "I love you so
much." She kissed him.
He took her left hand in
his. "Is that a yes?"
"Of course it is." She kissed
him again.
He slid the ring onto her
finger. "I love you." He kissed her deeply. "I can't wait for you to be
my wife."
Her breath caught. "I love
the sound of that 'your wife'".
He started to pull her towards
him. He kissed her. "If it wasn't so cold out I'd make love to you right
here. Like we did the first time."
Livvie pushed him back and
laid partially on top of him. "It's not that cold." She kissed him.
He shoved his hands into
her hair and held her head as he passionately kissed her. He turned her
over and proceeded to make love to her right there and it was spectacular.
He felt so alive and so fulfilled. He wrapped his coat tightly around her
as he held her. "Do you know how happy you've made me?"
She blushed slightly. "After
what we just did I have a pretty good idea." She sighed feeling totally
content. "Jack, you have been the best thing that has ever happened to
me. I couldn't go on if anything ever changed and you weren't in my life."
He hugged her even tighter.
"Well that is something you'll never have to worry about. We're going to
get married, have a bunch of kids, grow old together and watch our grandkids
grow up."
She propped herself up and
looked down at him. "What do you mean by a bunch of kids?"
He pushed her hair back.
"I don't know. How does six or seven sound?"
"In your dreams Ramsey."
She kissed him. "Seriously though there's nothing I want more than to marry
you and have your children."
He kissed her. "You're going
to be the best mother." He kissed her again. "We better get inside before
we freeze to death." They stood up. Jack handed Livvie her coat. "Just
put that on and I'll get your stuff." He slipped his jeans and sweater
on and grabbed the rest of her clothes. Putting his shoes on he followed
her up the bank and to the house. They were giggling when they came around
to the front porch.
Sitting there on the top
step was Henry. Livvie quickly glanced down to make sure all her buttons
were buttoned.
Jack sighed. "You're not
welcomed here Henry."
Henry stood up. "Please
Jack. I'm only asking for fifteen minutes just to talk."
Livvie took the pile of
clothes from Jack. "I'll meet you inside." She kissed him and walked past
Henry and into the house without saying a word.
Henry smiled. "She really
is a beautiful girl Jack. You've done well for yourself."
"I know that. Look we're
in the middle of something and I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't just show
up here unannounced." He was trying very hard to be civil.
Henry nodded. "I understand.
I won't keep you then."
"Great." Jack walked up
the stairs and into the house without a backwards glance. He went upstairs
and found Livvie slipping into her robe.
She tied the sash around
her waist. "So how did it go?"
Jack shrugged. "It didn't.
I asked him not to come around here."
Livvie wrapped her arms
around him and hugged him tight. "It's going to be okay Jack."
He sighed. "I hope so. I
really do."
**********************************************
Chris and Eve had decided
to keep their budding relationship quiet for the time being. They didn't
want everyone in their business just yet. It wasn't easy especially at
the hospital. They had almost been caught by Karen in the on call room
the other day. So they mostly spent time at Eve's apartment after she got
Danny to bed.
They were curled up together
on Eve's couch. Chris was telling her about the Henry situation. "I just
haven't quite figured out why he's here. So far I can't come up with anything."
Eve laid her head on his
shoulder. "Did you ever think that maybe he has no secret agenda. Maybe
he's changed and really wants a relationship with you and Jack."
Chris shook his head. "Trust
me Eve he will never change. A man like him doesn't know how to."
Eve sat up. "Have you tried
to talk to him? I mean really talk to him."
Chris was seriously offended.
"No I haven't tried to talk to him. The man was a drunk all my life. We
had nothing because of him. He physically abused our mother not to mention
us kids. I'll never be able to forgive him for that."
"Chris I realize how hard
your childhood was on you. But eventually we grow up and we have to move
on. I'm not saying you have to forgive him. Just talk to him." She took
his hand. "Afterall he is your father. Maybe getting older made him re-evaluate
his life and what he's done."
He knew there was some truth
to what she was saying. He put his arm around her. "I can understand what
you're saying up here," he pointed to his head "but here," he laid his
hand over his heart "it still hurts too much."
She laid her hand over his.
"I know Chris." She leaned up and placed a kiss to his lips. "Let me help
ease the pain for you."
He looked into her eyes.
"Eve?"
She nodded. "Make love to
me Chris." She placed her hands on either side of his face. "I want you
so much." She started to kiss him deeply. Immediately she felt him respond.
She reached down and started to untie his necktie. She removed it and threw
it to the floor. She quickly started on the buttons of his shirt. She kissed
her way down his chest as each button was undone. She removed the shirt
and knelt between his legs. Quickly she unbuckled his belt and threw it
across the room.
His mouth went completely
dry. "Eve."
She placed a kiss to his
stomach and undid his pants with a tug she pulled them off along with his
socks. "You had way too many clothes on."
He pulled her up and kissed
her. "I think it's your turn now." The two of them quickly removed her
clothing. He kept kissing her the whole time. Slowly he laid her back on
the couch. He kissed her once again. "Eve are you sure about this?"
She nodded. "There isn't
a doubt in my mind." She kissed him and pulled him on top of herself. Before
she could even take a breath he entered her. "Oh Chris."
He kissed her. "I know Eve."
She felt a tear slide down
her cheek. This all felt so right and so good. She wrapped her arms around
him trying to pull him even closer to her. She knew for the first time
in a long time she was making the right decision. This was where she belonged.
Chris couldn't stop kissing
her. She was wonderful and she felt so good. It had been far too long since
he felt this way.
Before either of them knew
it it was over. Chris wrapped his arms around Eve and held her tight. Eve
smiled to herself. It was so strange how the world worked. Here she was
being held in Chris Ramsey's arms after making incredible love with him.
She breathed deeply.
Chris kissed the top of
her head. "What are you thinking about?"
She ran her finger along
his forearm. "I was just thinking how strange it is that you and I would
end up here together like this and it would feel so right."
Chris smiled and kissed
the side of her neck. "I know what you mean. It does feel right doesn't
it?"
"It certainly does." Eve
sighed laying her head on the pillow and closing her eyes. They fell asleep
on the couch wrapped in each others arms. It was the first good nights
sleep Chris had had in a very long time.
**********************************************
Lucy and Kevin were in Dr.
Sanderson's examining room. Lucy was in a gown and on the table. They were
here for her first prenatal checkup. Dr. Sanderson also wanted to do an
ultrasound just to get a better picture of everything.
Kevin sat in the chair next
to the table. He held Lucy's hand. "I have to admit I'm a little nervous."
Lucy looked at him shocked.
"You are? Why?"
Kevin shrugged. "Well I
mean it's not every day a man gets to go to his wife's first prenatal checkup."
Lucy smiled at him. "Oh
Doc, you're going to be the best father this baby could ever have. Think
about how lucky he or she is. It has you the sweetest, most gentle, loving
man for a father and he or she is getting me Lucy Coe Collins as it's mother."
She thought for a second. "As a matter of fact this child is so incredibly
blessed. I mean he or she gets me...me...the best shopper, best listener
coolest mom in the universe."
Kevin laughed. "Yeah also
the most stubborn not to mention nosiest..."
"Hey I am not nosey." She
squeezed his hand. "Okay so maybe I'm a little curious."
He leaned up and kissed
her. "Just a little." He sat back down. "Our child is the luckiest child
in the universe because he or she is so wanted and so loved."
Lucy smiled. "That is for
sure." She rubbed her stomach. "Did you hear that sweetpea? You are loved
and wanted."
Dr. Sanderson walked in.
She shook Kevin's hand. "It's nice to see you Dr. Collins." She walked
around to the other side of the table. "Lucy how have you been feeling?"
"Absolutely fabulous." She
gushed. "I couldn't be better."
Dr. Sanderson smiled. "Still
on cloud nine. That is exactly what I like to hear." She continued with
the examination. Everything looked great. She then set everything up and
they started the ultrasound.
Kevin and Lucy were holding
hands as well as their breaths. Dr. Sanderson moved the paddle around.
"There see." She pointed to the tiniest dot on the screen. "That's your
baby."
Lucy started to cry. "Doc,
it's our baby."
Kevin stood up and kissed
Lucy. "So it is." He felt his eyes begin to tear up as well. They could
hear the tiny heart beat for the first time and it was the most incredible
thing either of them had ever heard.
Dr. Sanderson excused herself
for a minute. Lucy couldn't stop staring at the screen. She reached out
and touched that tiny spot. "Hello little one." She looked at Kevin. "I
love you."
He kissed her. "And I love
you."
Dr. Sanderson came back
in. "Okay from the way everything looks today you are approximately eight
weeks pregnant so that puts you to an October delivery if all goes as planned.
I'm going to say October 6th and we'll adjust that after the next ultrasound
if we have to." She handed Kevin the ultrasound printout. "Lucy make another
appointment on your way out and remember if you have any questions or concerns
feel free to call me anytime."
Lucy nodded. Kevin shook
Dr. Sanderson's hand. "Thank you so much."
Dr. Sanderson smiled. "You're
welcome. See you in a couple of weeks."
Lucy sat up. "Thank you.
Ta!"
Kevin kissed her. "And thank
you Lucy for allowing me to be a part of all this. I can't help but think
of everything I missed out on with Livvie. I'm so thankful for this chance."
Lucy took his hands. "I
know you are. Let's get out of here. I'm starving."
**********************************************
Jack and Jamal were completely
backed up. They had just gotten a huge job for a local company that was
involved in the motorcross competitions. They were servicing and repairing
all of their bikes. It was an incredible opportunity for them. They had
been turning a profit before but now they were going to be more than comfortable.
They were cleaning up for
the night. Jack glanced at the clock. "Livvie's going to kill me. I'm going
to be so late."
Jamal smiled. "Oh man you
get engaged and you lose your backbone. What's up with that?"
"Oh right and you have such
a backbone when it comes to Alison right?" Jack put the tools away and
shut the drawer.
Jamal nodded. "Ali knows
her place man."
"What place is that?"
Both Jack and Jamal looked
up at Alison who had just come back into the shop. Jack laughed. "Oh man
you are so busted."
Alison smiled. "Yeah you
are Jamal."
Jamal rushed over to her
and wrapped his arms around her waist. "What I meant Spunky was your place
by my side." He kissed her.
Alison pushed him away and
smiled. "That better be what you meant."
Jack slid his coat on. "That's
some backbone you got there Jamal." He grabbed his keys. "Livvie and I
will meet you guys at your place in an hour and we'll head out to celebrate."
"I can't wait. We'll see
you in an hour." Alison turned to Jamal. "Now as for you Mr. Woods. I think
you owe me an apology."
Jamal wrapped his arms around
her. "I know the perfect way." He kissed her.
She smiled. "Well let's
get home and we'll see if it's good enough to get you forgiven."
"Oh, it's good enough."
He followed her out locking up the shop and heading home.
*********************************************
Livvie and Jack arrived right
on time to pick up Jamal and Alison. The four of them had had dinner and
were now at a bar drinking and celebrating some more. Livvie was sitting
on Jack's lap.
Alison raised her glass.
"I want to make a toast."
Jamal rolled his eyes. "Okay
here we go."
Alison giggled. "No really.
To the future Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ramsey may you guys always be as happy
as you are tonight."
They all clinked glasses
and took a sip. Livvie set her glass down and wrapped her arms around Jack's
neck. "I like the sound of that. 'Mrs. Ramsey'." She kissed him. "I love
you."
He kissed her. "And I love
you."
Livvie picked her glass
up again. "Now I have a toast. To Jamal and my wonderful, handsome, sexy
fiancee for making the Bike Shop such a huge success."
Jamal smiled. "You know
it Livvie."
Alison kissed Jamal. "I
really am proud of you guys. I knew you could do it."
Jamal hugged her to him.
"I couldn't have without all of your faith in me. Not to mention all of
the hard work you put into it." He kissed her.
Livvie groaned. "Alright
you two enough of that mushy talk." She started to get up and Jack pulled
her back down.
"Where do you think you're
going?"
She laughed. "I'm going
to sit in my chair."
He kissed her neck. "I like
you right where you are."
Livvie leaned back against
his chest. "Oh you do, do you?"
Jack was feeling the effects
of the alcohol. "Yeah I do." He kissed her temple working his way to her
ear and whispered. "I can't wait to get you home." Livvie blushed. He kissed
her ear. "Do you have any idea what I'm going to do with you?" She shook
her head gently. He smiled and kissed her neck again.
"Jack? Jack Ramsey is that
you?"
All four of them looked
up at the pretty blonde haired woman that had approached their table. "It
is you." She smiled at Jack.
Jack couldn't believe his
eyes. "Gwen, oh my God, what are you doing here? In Port Charles?"
She shrugged. "I got a great
job offer at a company in town. I can't believe it. Of all the places to
see someone I know."
Livvie cleared her throat.
"Aren't you going to introduce us Jack?"
It was as if Jack suddenly
just remembered that Livvie was on his lap. "Of course. Gwen this is Jamal
Woods, Alison Barrington, and this beautiful girl right here is my fiancee
Livvie Locke. Everyone this is Gwen Peterson."
Everyone exchanged polite
hellos. Livvie moved to her chair. "So Gwen how do you and Jack know each
other?"
"From Westford. We lived
in the same neighborhood. I knew his mom before Jack came to town." She
turned to Jack. "So how did you end up here? The last time I saw you you
were going to look for your brother."
Jack nodded. "Actually that's
what brought me to Port Charles. I tracked Chris back here."
"That's amazing. I know
how important it was to you and your mom that you find him. I'm so glad
to know that that all worked out for you." She glanced at Livvie. "It seems
you've made a good life for yourself here Jack."
Livvie took his hand in
hers. "He has."
Jack nodded and kissed Livvie's
hand. "I really have." He turned to Gwen. "Where are you living?"
"I've rented an apartment
on North Drive. It's small but nice. I'd love to get together sometime."
Jack nodded. "Absolutely.
I can show you around town. I'll give you my cell number." He grabbed a
napkin and turned to Livvie. "Hey sweetie do you have a pen?"
Livvie opened her pocketbook
and pulled out a pen. "There you go. Sweetie." She smiled.
Jack wrote down his number
and handed her the napkin. "Call me."
Gwen smiled sweetly. "I
definitely will. It was nice meeting you all." She touched Jack's shoulder.
"It was great seeing you again Jack."
"You too, Gwen." He watched
her walk away.
Alison looked at Livvie
who looked as if she wanted to strangle Gwen. Alison being Alison had to
ask "So Jack how well did you know each other?"
"Yeah Jack how well?" Livvie
crossed her arms in front of her chest.
Jack looked at her. "Livvie
are you jealous?"
"Should I be?" She reached
out for her drink. Jack pulled it away. She glared at him. "What are you
doing?"
"I think you've had enough."
Livvie immediately went
on the defensive. "Excuse me? What are you my father now?" She grabbed
the drink and took a sip.
Jack sighed and leaned back
in his chair. " Livvie you're not even suppose to be drinking to begin
with."
Alison decided this had
gone on long enough. "Okay you guys just relax. We're suppose to be celebrating
remember?"
"I'm totally relaxed Ali."
Livvie forced a smile.
Jack reached out and took
her hand. "Livvie come on there's nothing to be jealous about. We're old
friends. That's all."
Livvie stood up and grabbed
her jacket. "I need some air." She rushed out the door.
"I'll be right back." Jack
followed her.
Jamal looked at Alison.
"Way to start something Spunky."
Alison shrugged. "Sorry.
I didn't like the way that Gwen chick was looking at Jack that's all."
Jack found Livvie in front
of the bar pacing. "Livvie."
She stopped short and looked
at him. "Did you sleep with her?"
"What kind of question is
that?"
Livvie held up her hands.
"Well that answers that doesn't it?"
"Livvie you know that there's
been other girls before you. I've never denied that." He took her hand.
"I love you. None of the others every meant what you do to me. What we
have is so much more. My God you're wearing my mother's ring. I've asked
you to be my wife." He pushed a strand of her hair behind her ear. "I love
you and only you." He kissed her lips gently. "Feeling better?"
She nodded. "Yeah. Sorry.
I was playing Miss Insecure again." She kissed him. "It's the alcohol and
my stupid jealousy."
He kissed her. "Actually,"
he smiled at her, "you look pretty sexy when you're angry." He started
kissing her. "Do you want to go home?"
She took his hand. "Yeah
let's go get Ali and Jamal." They went back into the bar. They finished
their drinks and the four of them left.
Gwen Peterson never took
her eyes off of Jack. She could remember every wonderful thing about him.
God, she had missed him and from the looks of things his fiancee wouldn't
be any trouble at all. She was going to get her man back even if it killed
her.
CHAPTER FIVE
Amanda Barrington was throwing
a huge charity ball for one of her many causes. Everyone at the hospital
was excited about it. Karen and Frank were in the on call room discussing
the big night when Eve rushed in slightly out of breath. "Hey guys."
Karen got up off the couch.
"Eve where have you been? I tried calling you three times last night. I
needed your opinion on my dress ideas for the ball."
Eve was flustered. "Oh I
was...um...I had a headache. I went to bed really early."
"Are you feeling better?"
Karen picked up her stethoscope.
"Yes much better. Thanks."
Eve shut her locker.
Frank grabbed his coat.
"An early night in bed I'm sure was exactly what you needed."
Eve blushed. "Yes a night
in bed was exactly what the doctor ordered."
Chris walked in. "Scanlon
don't you ever work? You're always hanging around in here." He threw some
files on the table. "Dr. Wexler I think there are some patients out there
that could use your help."
"Alright Ramsey I get it."
Karen turned to Eve. "I'll talk to you later about dresses. Maybe we could
go shopping."
Eve nodded. "Definitely.
I'll call you tonight."
Frank and Karen left the
on call room. Suddenly it was very quiet. Chris walked over to where Eve
was standing. "Hey Lambert. How are you feeling this morning?"
She smiled. "You know exactly
how I'm feeling this morning Dr. Ramsey."
He leaned towards her. "I
hated leaving you to go home and change. I just wanted to stay in bed with
you." He kissed her.
Eve started to put her arms
around him when the door flew open and Nurse Colleen rushed in. Eve and
Chris jumped apart. Colleen looked at the two of them slightly suspicious.
"Good morning doctors."
Eve buttoned her white doctors
coat. "Good morning Colleen."
Chris sat down at the table
and started to look over the files. Colleen found what she was looking
for. "So Dr. Lambert how is Daniel doing?"
Eve smiled. "Really great
thanks for asking."
"Sure see you out front."
Chris rolled his eyes. "Yeah
see you out front."
Colleen left and Eve started
to laugh. "This is getting tricky. Colleen will be gossiping with half
the staff before the end of the day." She came up behind Chris. "How long
do you think we can keep this up?" She wrapped her arms around his neck
and kissed his cheek.
"What do you think about
going to Amanda Barrington's fete together and shocking the hell out of
everybody?" Chris closed the files and stacked them together.
"I like the way you think.
It's a great idea. Let's do it." She kissed him. "You're amazing Ramsey."
She headed out of the room.
Chris sat back and smiled
to himself. He was pretty amazing if he didn't say so himself. He picked
up the files and headed out to his office. He was cheif resident again
and he had a million things to do besides sit around and daydream.

Gwen had spent the last few
days finding out everything she could about Jack. She knew where he lived
and worked, where he liked to hang out and with who. She had talked to
a few people and it seemed him and Livvie were pretty solid. Of course
that just meant more work but Jack was worth it. She had wanted a few days
before she called him. She didn't want to appear too desperate. They were
meeting at the Recovery Room for lunch. She had worn her tight black sweater
and jeans. She had to admit she looked great.
She got to the Recovery
Room ten minutes late. She wanted to make sure Jack was there when she
arrived. She found him at the bar talking to the blonde girl from the other
night. They were laughing about something. Gwen took a deep breath and
approached them. "Hey Jack. Sorry I'm late."
Jack turned to face her.
"No problem. I'm just glad you made it."
She smiled touching his
arm. "I couldn't pass up a chance to have lunch with one of my favorite
guys." She turned towards Alison. "I'm sorry but I forgot your name."
Alison smiled. "It's Alison
Barrington."
"That's right. Are you related
to Amanda Barrington?"
Alison nodded. "Yeah I'm
her granddaughter."
Jack stood up. "So do you
want to get something to eat." He gave Alison a kiss on the cheek. "Do
you want to join us?"
Alison shook her head. "No
I've had lunch and I've got a ton of errands to run." She picked up her
coat and handbag. "Tell Livvie to call me because we have to co-ordinate
dresses for the ball."
Jack headed to the table
Gwen was now sitting at. "I'll tell her to call you." He sat down.
Gwen looked up from the
menu. "Ball? Are you guys attending the Barrington Ball?"
Jack rolled his eyes. "Unfortunately
we are. Alison talked us into going with her and Jamal. Livvie's excited.
I hate things like that."
She smiled. "I think it
sounds like a lot of fun."
"If it makes Livvie happy
I'll go." He smiled at her.
Gwen sighed. "So the two
of you are really serious then huh?"
"You could say that." He
shook his head. "Do you remember when we use to talk about leaving Westford
and drifting from place to place and never really settling down? Seeing
the world no roots?"
"Yeah I remember. We talked
about all the exciting things we were going to do and see."
"Exactly. Well all that
changed the day I met Livvie. She made me want to stop and be in one place.
She is the home I had been searching for all my life." He shrugged. "I'm
sorry. I'm probably boring you to death with all this."
Gwen shook her head. "No
not at all. I'm happy to see you so happy Jack." She leaned closer to him.
"You know I never stopped caring about you and I'm glad to see everything
has worked out for you."
"It really has."
They ate lunch and then
Jack showed her around town finally taking her to the Bike Shop. She had
stayed the whole afternoon to hang out with him while he worked. They were
in the middle of laughing and reminising when Livvie came in.
Livvie felt a surge of jealousy
flow through her. She took a deep breath and told herself to control it.
She shut the door behind herself. "Hey sweetie." She crossed the shop and
wrapped her arms around his waist.
He kissed her. "Do you know
how much I've missed you?"
She gave him a squeeze.
"Me too. You left in such a hurry this morning I hardly saw you." She turned
to Gwen. "Hello Gwen."
"Livvie." Gwen picked up
her coat. "I better get going. Thanks for lunch and the tour Jack. It was
really nice."
Jack smiled as he put an
arm around Livvie. "No problem. We should all get together soon."
Livvie decided to try harder.
"We'll have you for dinner one night. That way you can get to know everyone."
Jack kissed Livvie's cheek.
"That is a great idea sweetheart."
Gwen nodded. "I'd love that.
Jack has my number so just give me a call." She opened the door. "See you
guys."
Livvie watched her close
the door. "Bye."
Jack pulled her tighter.
"What was that?"
Livvie looked up at him.
"What was what?"
Jack smiled down at her.
"You being so sweet and nice to Gwen."
Livvie shrugged. "She's
your friend Jack. I just want to make you happy."
He nodded. "Okay whatever
you say Miss Locke."
She pushed his arm playfully.
"What? Would you rather have me go postal every time I see the two of you
together?"
"Two girls fighting over
me doesn't sound so bad."
"In your dreams Ramsey."
She turned around.
"You have no idea." Jack
smacked her on her behind.
"We better go home and change."
Jack leaned against the
workbench. "Oh that's right dinner with your father and Lucy tonight. I
forgot." He sighed. "So how do you think your dad will react to us getting
married?"
She smiled and looked at
the engagement ring on her finger. "I think he'll be very happy that were
happy." She looked at him. "Ready?"
"Yeah let's get out of here."
They locked up the shop and left.
**********************************************
Lucy and Kevin were already
at the restaurant waiting for Jack and Livvie. Kevin ordered drinks for
him and Lucy. He knew something was up with Livvie. She never asked to
meet for dinner unless she had something to tell him or discuss with him.
He just hoped it was nothing serious. He finally had things going the way
he wanted them and he didn't want anything to go wrong.
Lucy called his name. "Doc...hello?
You're a million miles away. What's wrong?"
Kevin glanced up at her.
"Sorry Lucy. I was just wondering why Livvie wanted to have dinner with
us tonight."
Lucy smiled at him. "Couldn't
she just want to have dinner with her dad? It doesn't mean anything is
wrong."
Kevin sighed. "What if she's
pregnant or something?"
"Doc, Livvie is very responsible.
I'm positive she is not pregnant. She would've come to me if she had thought
she was. Besides," she put her hand on her stomach, "one baby in the family
this year is enough." She giggled. "Could you imagine if Livvie were pregnant
though? Her baby and our baby would be the same age." She looked at Kevin
who was not finding this conversation as amusing as Lucy. "Get it? Our
baby would be her baby's aunt or uncle but they would be the same..."
"I get it Lucy." Kevin cut
her off. "You're not making me feel any better." He looked at his watch.
"Why are they always late? It's so irresponsible not to be on time."
Lucy squeezed his hand.
"Relax Doc they probably got tied up. They're only ten minutes late."
"You would think Jack would
want to make a better impression on me wouldn't you?"
Lucy was about to respond
when Jack and Livvie rushed over. Livvie sat down. "Sorry we're late you
guys."
Jack sat next to her. "Sorry
Dr. Collins we've been so backed up at the shop."
Kevin held up his hands.
"It's fine Jack."
They ordered and got halfway
through dinner making small talk when Kevin asked them what was going on.
"So, you two doing okay?"
Livvie nodded and smiled.
"Better than okay." She held out her left hand to show them the ring. "Jack
asked me to marry him and I said yes. Of course."
Lucy grabbed her hand. "Of
course. Oh Livvie I'm so happy for you two. Jack the ring is beautiful."
Jack let out a deep breath.
"It was my mother's ring. It's all I have left of her."
Livvie kissed him. "I'll
treasure it always."
He touched her cheek. "I
know you will."
Livvie looked at Kevin.
"Dad, you haven't said anything. What do you think?"
Kevin was speechless. "Well
I'm shocked. Don't you think it might be a little soon. I mean...I'm,"
he shrugged, "shocked."
Lucy kicked Kevin gently
under the table. "Doc."
Livvie felt all her excitement
evaporate. "Dad, I want you to be happy for me...for us."
Jack sighed picking up his
napkin and laying it next to his plate. "I need some air." He kissed Livvie
on the cheek. "Excuse me." He stood up.
"Jack." Livvie started to
get up.
Jack turned around. "No
Livvie stay here. I'll be back in a bit."
Kevin, Lucy and Livvie watched
him walk out. Livvie turned to her father. "Thanks a lot Dad. Do you know
how hard it was for Jack to come here tonight?"
"Livvie I'm just worried
that the two of you are rushing things. You're twenty years old. You have
your whole life ahead of you. Not to metion everything you've been through
this past year." Kevin sighed. "Why don't you wait until your through school
and the two of you are more settled?"
Livvie ran her hand through
her hair. "Here we go again. You're trying to control my life. I love Jack
and no amount of time is going to change that. It doesn't matter if we
wait five, ten or fifty years. We belong together."
Lucy held up her hands.
"Okay you two lets just calm down."
Livvie got up. "I need to
go find my fiancee." She looked at Kevin. "Please don't make me choose
dad. Excuse me."
Lucy sighed. "Livvie wait."
Livvie left without a backwards
glance. Kevin threw his napkin down. "That went well."
Lucy put her arm around
him. "Doc, you have to let her go. Give her room to be herself and make
her own decisions and her own mistakes."
He nodded. "It's just so
hard. I want different things for her."
Lucy squeezed his hand.
"Jack loves her. No one will ever love her like he does."
"How do you know that Lucy?
He's the only real relationship she's ever had with a man. It took us how
many years to find each other and get it right. And here she is marrying
the first guy who asks her."
Lucy shook her head. "Doc
that's not fair. Livvie and Jack have dealt with more than most couples
do in sixty years. They're meant to be together. You need to accept that
or you are going to lose her."
Kevin ran his hands over
his face. "I know that Lucy. It's just that when I first found Livvie I
had so many expectations for her. You know."
Lucy hugged him. "I know
Doc. That's what being a parent is all about. We expect all kinds of things
for our children but that doesn't mean we can control it." She kissed his
cheek. "Livvie loves you and she'll come around."
He nodded. "I have to let
go. I'll let her cool down and then I'll talk to her."
"You're a good man Dr. Collins
and you're an even better father. I love you."
"I love you too." He kissed
her and they finished their dinner.
**********************************************
Livvie found Jack in front
of the restaurant pacing. She rushed over to him. "Jack honey."
He stopped pacing and turned
towards her. "I told you to stay inside."
She laid her hand on his
arm. "Please talk to me." He started to turn away. She pulled him back.
"Don't you dare shove me away."
He sighed. "Livvie I'm really
angry right now. I need some time."
"No Jack, if we're going
to be married we need to work things out together."
He shrugged. "If things
were up to your father we wouldn't even be getting married." He held up
his hands. "I'll never be good enough for Dr. Collins' daughter. No matter
how many times I prove my love and loyalty to you it will never be enough."
She grabbed his hand. "It's
enough for me Jack and it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks or feels
about us. I love you. My dad knows how much we care about each other. He's
just shocked. That's all it is."
"No!" He pulled his hand
away. "That's not all it is Livvie. He didn't like me from the very beginning
and he still doesn't. I don't have the right job, I don't come from the
right type of family, I don't know the right kind of people. I could give
you a whole list of reasons why your father would rather see you with anyone
else but me. Yeah he's grateful for what I did to try and help you through
last year but that's where it ends. I'll never be worthy of you."
"Don't do this Jack." She
felt tears welling up in her eyes. "You saved me and I'm not only talking
about Caleb. You saved me when I felt lost and scared." She put her hands
on his face. "You are my life." She kissed his lips. "I love you Jack."
"I love you too, Livvie."
He sighed and took here hands in his. "But right now I just need some time.
Alone."
She couldn't breath. "What
does that mean? Alone?"
He kissed her cheek. "You
go in and finish your dinner. I'll meet you at home later." He turned and
started walking down the street.
Livvie watched him go. Sighing
she walked back in to get her coat and left without seeing her father or
Lucy. She had to fix this. She just wasn't sure how to do that.
