The ritual of touching persists because it provides temporary relief from the general distress that Monk feels. As a person with OCD, his obsessions are a source of constant stress. Touching repeatedly is the only way to find a peaceful moment. But over time, this compulsion to touch light posts, parking meters, desk lamps, and bridge posts will take more and more of his time, thus dominating his life. Will he ever be cured?!!

Here are the steps to Mastering A Compulsion: ...as suggested by Dr. E.B. Foa and Dr. Reid Wilson in Stop Obsessing! How to Overcome Your Obsessions and Compulsions
- Change the order in which you ritualize. Do things in reverse order, start with the second thing first...
- Change the frequency. If you must brush your top teeth 10 times exactly, try 11 times...
- Change the objects you use. Try changing brands of soap that you constantly wash your hands with. Instead of touching a lamp on a desk, try touching the calendar.
Change when you ritualize. If you have to stand in front of the bathroom mirror to comb your hair, try changing the location by doing it in the hallway once in awhile. If you must sit while putting on your shirt, stand up instead.
