Chapter 7a
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: .Frankie got into a mess, unwittingly involving Erica and Bianca. Frankie saved them all and was shot but she got through it all. Seth is dead. The disc is missing (Vanessa has it). Jackson's on the case, as is Anna. Erica is determined to get Bainca away from Frankie while Bianca is determined to have Frankie in her life forever.
Note: About 3-4 weeks have passed. Frankie's well on the road to recovery. Things have been relatively quiet and happy for the new couple. (Think of it like on TV when other storylines have taken precedence, the focus rotates, giving our girls some space, than focusing on them once again after their well deserved respite.).
setting: Opal's house. Frankie's room.
Frankie walks into the room and throws her bag onto the bed, quickly following it to land face down upon the soft mattress.
Her muffled voice called out from where her face is pressed into the comforter,"Next time you ask me to go shopping with you I consider myself duly warned."
Bianca laughs, hearing the words upon entering. She's carrying a bunch of bags. "Hey, I'm not to blame. I was raised by the Erica Kane. Fashion guru extraordinaire."
Frankie rolls unto her side. "Ugh. No wonder she's so small, she burns all her calories power shopping!"
"I can't believe how much money you spent Bianca! I can't get over the cost of a single shirt in some of those places! And that place with the sale was crazed! I thought the swat team would show up to break up the riot!"
"You're the riot." Bianca grins from her lounged position in the chair."You'll get used to our strange ways."
"I won't survive it!" Frankie groans dramatically.
"We'll have to put you in training." Bianca states with mock seriousness. "Five shopping sprees a week."
"Five!?" Frankie cries out in dismay.
"You will be assimilated Frankie Stone!" Bianca intones.
Frankie chucks a pillow at her laughing. "You are too much.. Seriously I am wiped. I think I need to crash for an hour."
"Would you like some company?"
"We've been dating for like, over a month or two now Bianca. I think it's okay if we crash. It's not like you haven't slept in my bed before." She tries to brush it off with humour.
Bianca doesn't let her."Yeah, but we're taking this slow and I know this is all still new to you. It is for me too. I don't want to push things."
Frankie regards her with a gentle _expression. She says softly. "You couldn't. It's not how you are. I...trust you Bianca. I want you to stay."
Bianca comes over to the bed, moving the bag she lies down near but not touching Frankie. Frankie looks over her shoulder and jerks her chin to indicate Bianca should move closer. "What ya doin' all the way over there? Get over here woman."
Bianca spoons her from behind. Frankie pulls Bianca's arms around her, holding a hand in hers against her chest.
"Better?" Bianca enquires.
"Much." Frankie replies in smug contentment.
"Good."
"You know I blame you for getting me addicted to all this warm fuzzy feeling stuff."
"As long as you only come to me for those warm fuzzy stuff then I take the blame gladly."
"I'll get you back. So watch out Biancala."
"Oh yeah?" Bianca's eyebrow raised. "You're not so tough."
Frankie flips around and kisses Bianca long and deeply. When they finally pull apart she says breathless, "How's that for payback when you least expect it?"
Bianca smiles brightly. "Remind me to taunt you more often."
"You got it." Frankie is about to lean in for another kiss when the phone rings.
They both groan in frustrated unison.
"Don't answer it!" Bianca protested.
"It might be about a job." Frankie sits up turning it on. "Hello?"
Her face shows immediate signs of aggravation. "No aunt Vanessa.....I'm kind of busy right now." She rolls her eyes at the watching Bianca. "Yeah right....I'm busy....That night too. Nah I got a lot going on with looking for work and getting ready to take some Summer school courses....I'll tell her....Yes! I promise already! Bye." She hangs up the phone and flops back down on the bed.
Bianca leans up on an elbow to regard her. "Your aunt Vanessa's still harassing you to come over huh?"
"Yeah." Frankie sighs.
"Well she is your family. It's sort of normal for her to want to see you I guess."
"Bianca, there is nothing normal about my family. And the further we stay away from them the better. I don't like her and I don't trust her. She wanted me to tell you that 'we' were welcome over for dinner anytime and that she would be 'delighted' to see you. She's so *phony*"
"So you don't think her offers legit? I mean, it's kind of nice that she'd invite both of us over. It's better than what my mom's been doing."
"You talked with her today?"
"No, I received a message on my phone from her. It's the same old tirade with her trying to run my life. Choose my friends..."
"And choose your girlfriends." Frankie adds.
"Well as long as she doesn't manage to scare you off I think I'll be okay. And who knows, maybe in time she'll settle down." Bainca said the last hopefully.
"Erica The Hurri-Kane. You've got your work cut out for you girl."
"You don't think maybe she'll calm down a little? She does love me Frankie."
"Hey, I know that. She's got the momma bear thing down pat. It's just, she hates me Bianca. I don't see that changing soon."
"Maybe." Bianca says thoughtfully. "But I'm patient. I can wait her out. Do you think you can stick it out with me?"
"Sure, I don't scare off easy. Except for a certain determined brown eyed amazing girl. She can scare the pants off of me."
"I don't mind that thought." Bianca said impishly.
Frankie laughed pleased.
After a moment of just gazing at each other Bianca breaks in,"So are we going to your aunt's for dinner some time?"
Frankie gets serious. "I don't like her Bianca. I really don't think you should go near her. Promise me you won't okay?"
"Sure." Bianca gives in, puzzled. "Why so serious though? I mean, she's pretty harmless."
""I guess. I just...don't have time for people who just want to use me. That's all she wants from either of us. I don't want her getting her claws into anything to do with us, if that makes sense?"
"In a weird way it does maybe." Bianca smiles at her gently. She lays her head down on Frankie's shoulder. "You don't want to get chummy with the maybe shady side of your family tree that's okay. I trust your instincts Frankie. There isn't anything you're not telling me about her and you is there?"
"No way! No, I mean, she's just..look how she manipulated your friend Leo, y'know? And he's like, her son. That's whacked. I don't want to be near someone like that is all. And I definitely don't want you near someone like that."
Bianca snuggles into her. "My protector."
Frankie puts her arms around Bianca holding her more closely. her face is very serious. Visually she recalls the blurred memory of Vanessa pawing at her in the ER. She unconsciously tightens her hold around Bianca.
*************************
In her apartment, Anna Duvane's cell phone rings. A shower is turned off and Anna comes out of the bathroom wrapping a towel around herself before picking up her cell.
"This is Anna Duvane."
Her eyes widen in surprise. "Yes, I did put in request some weeks ago in regards to a Mary-Francis Stone. So the FBI came up with nothing? Not even a juvy record of any kind?.....I see....No, that's helpful really. I appreciate you getting back to me, sorry all your leg work came up empty. Yeah, yeah. Take care. Bye."
She stares at the phone, intrigued. After brief consideration she dials. "Hi there, guess who? You got it in one, that's great. Yeah, I'm back on the job." She pauses and then smiles mischievously. "Now you know I can't tell you that. But I do need a favour from you....Oh come on, after what happened in Cambodia I would think a small favour wouldn't be too much to ask of you? Yeah? Great. I need a work up on Mary-Francis Stone. The works. ...The FBI came up empty. I think there might be something there. ....Well, I would hope INTERPOL might be able to come up with more. Hm hmm. You can? That's fantastic. Next time I'm in London I'll buy you dinner. Bye."
She folds the phone with a satisfied snik. A very pleased _expression on her face. "Looks like I have a mystery to solve. The mysterious street kid who has somehow managed to clean all traces of herself. And just when I was starting to get bored here."
Chapter 7b
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: The lovebirds seem fine. Frankie however, is suspicious of Vanessa while Anna unbeknownst to FandB, digs into Frankie's hidden past...
setting: The next day. Frankie's room.
Frankie is flipping through a magazine while sitting on her bed, listening to tunes.
Bianca calls out from the bathroom, "Hey Frankie, do you think I can borrow a t-shirt from you? I didn't bring any change of clothes last night."
"Sure," Frankie answers absently. "Maybe you should have some stuff of yours over here, you know, since we spend a lot of time together an'all."
Bianca walks out in a towel. She rummages through Frankie's drawer but her mind is all on Frankie's suggestion. She strives for a casual voice, "Yeah, that's a good idea. As long as you promise not to leave my clothes in hard to recognize lumps around the room."
Frankie looks up from her mag at Bianca's grinning face. "Hey! Are you calling me a slob?"
Grabbing a tee, Bianca heads for the bathroom. "Not at all, just saying that you're creative with your laundry...or perhaps neatness challenged." She ducks into the bathroom.
"I'll challenge you, you brat!" Frankie laughs.
Bianca can be heard laughing from the bathroom. "Trust me Frankie, you challenge me plenty just the way you are."
"Likewise I assure you."
Bianca comes out dressed and climbs onto the bed giving her girlfriend a sweet kiss. "And I assure you that's it's a challenge that makes me very, very happy. Don't ever change."
Frankie's whole countenance softens and she gives her girlfriend a tender kiss back. Than she tries to act cool. "You and your mushy side."
Bianca smiles knowingly. "Yeah, it's all me Frankie."
Frankie studiously keeps her nose in her mag suddenly.
"Hey," Bianca climbs off the bed, "I was thinking of fresh bagels and _mocha latte for brunch. Interested?"
"Yeah!" Frankie's mouth waters at the thought. "But I don't think we have that downstairs."
"I was going to run to the café and get some. You game?"
"Absolutely." Frankie beams at her.
"You keep looking at me like that and it's going to be very hard to leave this room."
Frankie holds the mag up to her face and points to the door, shoulders shaking in suppressed laughter.
Bianca chuckles grabbing her purse. "Be back before you know it."
Still hidden behind her magazine, Frankie said quietly, not expecting to be heard, "I always know when you're not here."
Bianca pauses at the door, looking back at her sweetheart with the most touched, tender _expression. She smiles to herself and leaves.
Only a few moments pass when there's a knock on the door.
Frankie looks up from her mag frowning mildly. "You forgot what, your shoes? Like you even have to knock Bianca. Get your butt in here."
The door opens and in walks Erica Kane.
Chapter 7c
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: Bianca left Frankie's room to get bagels and coffee. Erica walked in to a lone Frankie.
setting: Frankie's room.
Frankie stares at Erica Kane for a second. "Bianca just left."
"I know." Erica stated, coming into the room and quietly closing the door. "I was outside waiting for her to leave."
"If you came here to try to intimidate me into leaving your daughter, forget it. You're wasting your time." She tosses her mag to the side, sitting up straighter.
"Actually," Erica says coolly, stepping towards the bed, "I was thinking of a more..lucrative approach."
Frankie crosses her arms. "Why don't you just get to the point."
"Fine." Erica takes her purse off her shoulder and opens it. "I knew from the very first moment I saw you that you were just another con artist. That you've successfully weaselled your way into my daughter's life is unacceptable. That her association with you has put not only my life but has nearly had my daughter killed twice is beyond intolerable Mary-Francis!"
"It's Frankie and you're not spouting anything new Erica. So tell me why you're in my room before I throw you out on your designer whatever." Frankie's voice raises as she stands.
"Here." Erica contemptuously throws two wads of money on the bed.
"What..?" Frankie picks them up. "Hola, there's gotta be, I dunno, at least ten grand here? What the hell is this for?"
"I think you know exactly what it's for. You leave my daughter, and Pine Valley and it's all yours. All twenty thousand dollars. That is what you came here for isn't it." It wasn't a question.
"Twenty g's huh? Wow, and Rain only scored what? Ten? Or was it only five? I can't remember from when Bianca told me the story."
"Nevertheless, I think you would agree that it is a generous offer-"
"For a no-good gold digger like me, right?"
"You are what you are Frankie. At least this way you get some of the money you're after. But stay near my daughter, and I will do everything I can to see that you regret it."
"Why Ms. Kane, that does sound like a threat. You do realize that's illegal. Wouldn't want you to tarnish your reputation now would we?" Frankie mocked.
"Just a yes Frankie and the money, all of it is yours. So what's it going to be?" Erica persisted.
Frankie fanned the wads of bills in her hand. "You know I get you but I don't Erica. You love Bianca. I really think you do, you're like Godzilla mom but it's cool, you know, you're just trying to protect her. But than you pull stuff like this, trying to drive away the people she cares about, control her life...you just end up driving away the one person you want to keep closest to you."
"Spare me your supposed insight Frankie. Like someone, something like you could ever understand the love I have for my daughter and that she has for me." Erica fumed.
"You're just trying to protect her. I get that Erica, hell, if only my own mother was more like you than maybe..." She breaks off and turns away.
Something there, something in Frankie's face before she turned away gives Erica pause. "Than maybe what ?" She asked genuinely interested.
"Nothing." Frankie comes back hard. She throws the money square at Erica. "Take your money. I'm not for sale."
"A dead man in the coroner's office would have a very different opinion." Erica said harder than steel.
Frankie flinches.
A voice stops whatever words either of them would have said.
"MOM!" Bianca yelled, appalled, standing in the doorway.
Chapter 7d
setting: Frankie's room.
Bianca quickly sets aside her coffees and bagels and steps to stand next to Frankie, facing her mother. "I can't believe you would do this to me again. Wasn't it bad enough when you threatened and paid Rain to leave? I honestly thought you regretted what you had done but obviously I was wrong. Just like I was wrong about thinking about giving you yet another chance. And for what? So that you can come back into my life and control it, twist it into what you think is 'best' for me?" Angry, Bianca shakes her head at Erica, appalled and overwhelmed.
"Bianca! I'm doing all this to protect you!"
"Save it mom. I don't want to hear it. I've heard it too many times before and it keeps coming back to this. You have a gay daughter mom. There it is. And she loves a woman you don't like. But honestly, I don't think any woman would be good enough for your little girl unless she was a man."
Erica puts a hand to her chest, taken aback by the vehemence of her daughter's tirade. "Bianca it's only because I love you! I told you before that it doesn't matter to me that your gay. I just want my little girl to be happy and safe!"
"Well mom, since happy and safe means cut off and secluded from the world; and since your love means threatening my girlfriend and trying to buy her to run her out of town...I think I could do without that. "
"Bianca..I.."
"Save it mom. I don't want to hear it anymore. Just go."
Reluctantly, Erica moves toward the door, she looks back pained to her soul. "Bianca she'' hurt you! I know it, my baby girl-"
"Enough mother! Please leave now." Bianca closes the door firmly at her mother's departure.
She hears her mother's car drive off and sags against the door.
"Whoa." says a very stunned Frankie.
"Yeah, my mom, gotta love that control streak. I'm really sorry about that Frankie." She pushes off the door and goes to her.
Frankie takes her in a hug. "Hey , don't worry about me. I'm tough. I just wish you two could make up y'know?"
Bianca pulls away enough to look at her. "You can say that after what she just pulled?"
"Hey, I admit it was whacko but.." she shrugs, "She's just trying to protect you. You guys love each other like fierce. I don't want to be the person who gets between that." Frankie sits on the bed.
"You're not." Bianca goes over and gets their coffees. "It's stuff that was going on way before you came here. It's just here, you know? She can't get over my being her little girl, or that I'm gay. That I'll never be the person she saw me as."
"Maybe you'll be able to work it out. Not like I'm any expert on the white picket fence deal but it seems like a cool thing to have family that cares about you."
Bianca rests a hand on Frankie's leg. "I'm sure your family must care about you too Frankie."
Frankie gets a far away look in her eyes "I'm not that lucky."
*********************
On the outskirts of town, a person stands obscured from view except for black army boots, jeans and a hand holding a duffel bag. The feet move towards a green sign that says "Welcome to Pine Valley".
Hands reach into that bag and pull out a newspaper. Unfolding it, it's the Exposer. On the cover is Frankie's face, circled in thick red with the words "She's in Pine Valley" scrawled underneath. The hands clench on the newspaper and soon it is crumpled and squeezed between two fists.
The person walks across and into the city.

note: Just a couple of in jokes of sorts for those who watch the show.
another note: I use an insult that Kendall used on Bianca in the TV show. So that's not my line. It originally belonged to whoever wrote it. Here someone else uses it since Kendall isn't in my fic.
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: Bianca defended Frankie to her mom. Someone new is coming to town and the person is coming for Frankie.
setting: About a week has passed. Outside the local restaurant (Does anyone know what it's called?)
Outside, Frankie and Bianca approach the entrance. Frankie's restless.
"I don't know if this is such a good idea Bianca."
Bianca smiles reassuringly. "It'll be fine. He's your cousin after all. Your family."
"Yeah, like I put a lot of stock in that. The guy practically accused me of trying to make off with your fortune when I first met him."
"Leo was wrong. And he's my friend." Bianca slides a hand down Frankie's arm to clasp her hand. "And you're my girlfriend and his cousin. Don't you think you two could maybe try to get along?"
"Hey, I said I'd give this double date thing a try for you. Just don't hold me responsible for saying what I think if he or his Revlon addicted girlfriend get on my nerves."
Bianca gives her an indulgent if droll look. "You not say what you think? Perish the thought!"
"Yeah,, smart mouth."
"But I'm your smart mouth."
"Ain't I the lucky one then? Come on, let's get this over with."
"Frankie, this is supposed to be a date, not a torture session."
Frankie opens the door and waves for Bianca to go in. "That remains to be seen."
*********************
In the restaurant Leo is speaking in hushed tones to Greenlee.
"Please Greens, she's my best friend, she's like my kid sister for cryin' out loud."
"I know I know. "Greenlee says wearily. "And Frankie's your cousin. She's got spunk but she's a felon Leo!"
"She's not a felon Greenlee, she hasn't been charged with anything."
"Still, I don't trust her."
"But you'll be nice to her?" He gives her his best puppy dog look.
"Yes Leo, I'll be nice. As long as she plays nice back, . In a platonic kind of way. If she goes Sapphic on me I'll-"
"Nice Greenlee, could you be anymore egotistical. Like any person near you has to come on to you. Besides, she's totally into Binky. Binks is really happy. Can't you try to get along with them just for one night?"
She regards his boyish face as he pours out all his charm on her. "Ooo, why can I never say no to you?" She grabs his face and kisses him soundly.
"Because I'm irresistible." He kisses her back.
They hear a slight clearing of a female throat and look up to see Frankie and Bianca standing there, slightly amused.
"You guys need supper or a room?" Frankie supplies.
"Frankie." Bianca ruins her attempt at chastisement by chuckling.
"What can I say, " Leo supplies, "I'm in love." He gives Greenlee another kiss than stands up to seat Bianca in a gentlemanly fashion. Frankie's body gets in the way.
"That's my job." Is al she says. Seating Bianca who gives her a smile and a thank you.
"Awful butch of you." Greenlee comments acerbically.
"Right," Frankie smirks at her as she sits next to Bianca and faces Greenlee, "like it's not obvious to everyone that you wear the pants in your relationship."
"Hey," Geenlee starts but Leo cuts her off.
"I think that's my hey. 'Hey.' " he adds facetiously trying to diffuse the potential situation from combusting immediately. "I am in no way womanly. Although I do like to wear her high heels" he added with a sly smile.
Leo!" Greenlee hits him in the arm."I'm being serious."
"So am I. I look hot in those Gucci pumps of yours, admit it."
Greenlee lets out a frustrated huff. "You're impossible."
"But you love me just the way I am right?"
She softens and they smooch again.
Bianca rolls her eyes and says in good humour. "Hey, we didn't come over here to watch you two make out."
"Jealous much." says Greenlee, irate at the interruption.
"Of you." Bianca arches a brow. "Hardly."
"Because I can have the normal life you can never have maybe? Ort is it just envy because me and my sweetheart can kiss in public without embarrassing mommy dearest."
"Whoa Greens-"
"No, it's okay Leo." Bianca stops his intervention.
Frankie folds her arms over her chest and leans back. "Yeah cuz, let them have it out. After all, it was your girl who tried to blackmail Bianca while she was in the closet."
"If she hadn't been such a closet case it wouldn't have been an issue. It's only lately Binks here has grown some chutzpah..maybe you get to be the man huh Bianca?"
"Ew. First of all Greenlee, nothing makes what you did to me okay. Secondly, Frankie and I can kiss in public anytime we want. We just don't like to give people a free show like you do."
Outraged, Greenlee stands up, shrugging off Leo's attempt to hold her back. "At least I'm normal!"
Bianca sips her water and states coolly. "If you're what's normal Greenlee than consider me happy to not be in the category."
"Why you little brat! You know Leo just gives you the time of day because he thinks you're so sweet and so nice but you are your mother's daughter aren't you. I mean, your taste in partners for relationships is on a par with hers. Losers everywhere, just look at the dirty blonde would-be gold digger you've attached yourself to."
At those last words Bianca rose and whipped out her arm in a quick, sharp slap.
Everyone froze.
Greenlee was the first to recover screeching in rage. She flies toward Bianca only to have Leo grab her and pick her up, throwing her over his shoulder.
"Well ladies," he says over her continued screaming as he walks toward the door, "it's been memorable. Let's not do this again. Sorry about this Bianca."
"It's not your fault Leo. You better get her out before she implodes."
He ducks down and gives her a quick peck on the cheek, ignores Frankie and exits the restaurant with an enraged Greenlee being carried out over his shoulder.
"Well, nothing like double dates." Frankie says trying to joke it off.
"Yeah well, you didn't need to start throwing attitude as soon as we got here." Bianca says extremely unhappy.
"What? You're blaming this on me?"
"No, no. It's just, I really wanted this to work out you know? Your family and when he marries Greenlee, which this time I think he just might go through with it, I'll have to deal with her if I want to se him. He is my friend."
"She's not. The way you slapped her though...wow, that was awesome."
"It didn't feel awesome."
"It was for me." Frankie got serious but tried to sound casual."No one's stood up for me before."
"I did it because I was angry. Come on, let's go." Bianca said, wanting to get away from the staring eyes of the patrons and restaurant staff.
Outside the door, Frankie says "don't be like that Bianca."
"Like what?"
"You hit her when she called me a loser. You were being my protector. Don't shrug that off."
Still aggravated and unhappy Bianca looks at her, "If I ask you a question will you answer it?"
Taken by surprise Frankie answers warily. "Sure I guess."
"Why do you shut me out and get all attitude whenever the subject of your family comes up?"
"What?" Frankie froze in her tracks.
"Do you think I'm stupid Frankie? Do you think I don't notice how whenever the topic of family comes up you get all withdrawn and make with the monosyllabic speak?"
"I don't know what you're talking about." Frankie shoves her hands in her pocket and walks right past Bianca.
"THIS is what I'm talking about Frankie! Frankie. Frankie, wait up!" Bianca picks up her step to try to catch Frankie.
Chapter 7f
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: B and F's double date with Leo and Greens didn't go as planned. After, it led to an argument b/t Bianca and Frankie when Bianca pursued Frankie's family issues (many of which are as yet unknown). Frankie walked out. Bianca chased after her.

setting: A few hours since the argument.
Bianca walks into Frankie's room, calling out her name. Getting no response, she turns on the light and sees Frankie hasn't yet returned.
Bianca pulls out her cell phone and dials a few numbers, listening.
"Dammit Frankie," Bianca says quietly to herself. "No messages from you, you still haven't come back home. I've been all over the town. Where can you be?"
She sits dejectedly on the bed, despairing. Glancing around her eyes land on a small object on the bedside table. She picks it up.
"A sea shell. Where did you get this from?" Bianca thinks for a moment than she realizes the answer. "Of course." She runs out the door.
*********
<some long minutes later>
Bianca walks out onto the sand. Even in the dark by the far away lights, she recognizes the silhouetted figure sitting on a jagged outcrop of rocks.
She calmly walks over to her and says gently. "Hey there."
Frankie looks up at her, surprised. "You found me huh?" She goes back to tossing pebbles in the nearby surf.
"Took me awhile. I should've known you'd come here." Bianca is careful to sit down close to Frankie but not touching.
"Why's that?" Frankie asks, her tone and posture apathetic.
A small but genuine smile graces Bianca's face. "Because this is where I took you out to breakfast on what was almost, sort of, our first date."
"It wasn't a date."
"I seem to recall some definite flirting." Bianca cajoled.
Frankie shrugs. "I barely remember it."
Bianca reigns in her hurt, hoping to get through to Frankie. " Is that why you keep a sea shell as a souvenir? Because it meant nothing to you? Don't be like this Frankie. Don't lie."
"I can't talk about the truth Bianca," Frankie pushes off the rock, angry tired, "so unless I lie what other options do I have?"
"Maybe your girlfriend could be a little more understanding and give you the space you wanted to talk about it when, and if, you choose to." Bianca apologized.
Frankie's _expression is sad. "I can't give you what you need Bianca. You don't deserve a mess like me."
Bianca stands up, giving her a long tender kiss before Frankie can even react.
"Frankie, you're more than I ever dreamed I could have. Even if you sell yourself short, I never will."
Frankie fights back tears. "Look, about that family stuff, I can't, I wont' talk about it. That has to be okay with you."
"Oh, sweetheart, it's okay." Bianca holds her face in her warm hands. "I'm sorry I pushed."
//I can feel the magic floating in the air
Being with you gets me that way
I watch the sunlight dance across your face and I've
Never been this swept away//
"I'm sorry I pushed back." Frankie covers Bianca's hands on her , with her own. "Do you forgive me?"
Bianca gazes into the eyes close to hers and says with all the honesty in her heart, "I love you."
Frankie blinks and a couple of tears escape. "Does that mean yes?"
"Frankie, if anyone should be asking forgiveness it's me. I'm the one who screwed up."
Frankie offers a ghost of her usual cocky grin. "I guess that means you have to atone, make amends."
Bianca rolls her eyes smiling back. "What can I do to make it up to you, oh wronged one?"
"Kiss me."
//All my thoughts seem to settle on the breeze
When I'm lying wrapped up in your arms
The whole world just fades away
The only thing I hear
Is the beating of your heart//
Bianca leans into comply but pauses catching the intense look on Frankie's face.
She presses her lips to Frankie's. When they part, their lips linger.
//'Cause I can feel you breathe
It's washing over me
Suddenly I'm melting into you
There's nothing left to prove
Baby all we need is just to be
Caught up in the touch
The slow and steady rushBaby, isn't that the way that love's supposed to be
I can feel you breathe
Just breathe//
"Will that do?"
Frankie caresses Bianca's face, her gaze lingering over the woman in her arms, "No." She answers simply.
"I want you to kiss me all night."
Bianca pulls away stunned by the request. The sureness in Frankie's regard gives her cause for recovery, and she pulls away only to take Frankie by the hand and lead her down to the sand.
Feeling the immense step they are about to make, Bianca falters. "Frankie, are you sure?"
//In a way I know my heart is waking up
As all the walls come tumbling down
I'm closer than I've ever felt before
And I know
And you know
There's no need for words right now//
Frankie having followed to kneel down with her, puts a light finger to Bianca's trembling lips. " You love me?"
"You know I do."
"I want, I need you to show me. Here, under the stars, I need to show you too, that I love you Bianca Montgomery. Let me?"
In answer, Bianca takes Frankie in her arms, her hands wrap in Frankie hair as their lips meet and their bodies touch.
//'Cause I can feel you breathe
It's washing over me
Suddenly I'm melting into you
There's nothing left to prove
Baby all we need is just to be
Caught up in the touch
The slow and steady rush
Baby, isn't that the way that love's supposed to be
I can feel you breathe
Just breathe
Caught up in the touch
The slow and steady rush
Baby, isn't that the way that love's supposed to be
I can feel you breathe
Just breathe
I can feel the magic floating in the air
Being with you gets me that way//
Chapter 7g
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: Bianca and Frankie resolved their argument of earlier. Their evening grew to one confirming the deep love they feel for each other.
setting: The morning after.
Bianca woke up in Frankie's bed. In Frankie's room. She stretches languidly and content. She sits up wrapping the blanket around her bare body. Her skin glows a lovely pale hue from the kisses of the sun's rays from the nearby window. She looks around. "Frankie, where did you go?"
At that moment, Frankie emerges from the bathroom in a towel wrapped around her body. A second one is in her hands roughly trying to dry her wet hair.
"Good morning." Bianca greets her, smiling like the sun has risen the moment Frankie was in her sight.
Frankie peeks out from wet hair and damp towel in surprise. "Bianca! Shoot, I was hoping to be back in there before you got up."
Bianca's eyes sparkled. "Well I'm up now. So whey don't you get back in here then?"
Dismayed Frankie takes the towel and holds it out like proof. "I'm still wet. Man, I didn't know sand could get into the places it got into! I'm so glad we came back here after..."
Bianca grabs the towel and pulls the faltering Frankie to her and the bed. "After we made love for the first time."
"Yeah." Frankie utters the word so softly it can barely be heard.
Bianca smile doesn't lessen, it only grows even more loving. "I don't care that you're wet from your shower. Only jealous you didn't invite me."
Frankie gives in the to the pull and kneels by Bianca on the bed, grinning. "Listen to you. One night with me and you're an animal."
"Says the woman who-" Frankie sagely interrupts those words with a well timed kiss to the lips to the woman she can't resist.
"Bianca..." The words still come so hard for her." I love you."
"I know Frankie," Bianca caresses the face so close to hers, I love you too. With all my heart. I wouldn't trade last night for anything."
Tears form in Frankie's eyes. Alarmed by the sight, Bianca holds her close. "What is it? Did I say something wrong? Did I do something wrong last night?"
"No, oh no. Everything was-is perfect." Frankie wipes impatiently at her eyes. "It's just that I didn't know, until all this, until you..."
"Bianca wipes a stray tear away with her thumb. "Didn't know what?"
Frankie looks at her, and for maybe the first time, all the walls are completely down, not a single trace of those formidable defences are anywhere. And her soul and heart shine through unhindered. "I didn't know until you Bianca, what love was. How it feels." Her hand traces the lines of Bianca's face tenderly. "How it makes my heart hurt from feeling so full. It feels so wonderful Bianca. It's such a gift. You are the most amazing person I've ever known. I can't believe I'm going to say this but I'm glad I was a no-good stray being used by some mastermind drug lord because otherwise I'd never have met you. And I'm so glad I met you Bianca-la."
Tears fall again from her eyes as well as Bianca's.
Bianca makes a noise and grabs onto her lover, holding her tight. "Oh God Frankie me too, me too."
They hold each other and cry tears of relief and joy at having found the other half of their soul. They laugh a little at their own intensity. Allowing it to ease somewhat for the time being.
"I have to say though," Bianca let's Frankie dabs at her eyes with a corner of the sheet as Bianca talks, "That as far as love confessions go. That one had to be pretty unique."
Frankie glances up at Bianca's frank grin and offers her own lopsided smile. "Yeah, I guess that pawn in a drug lord's scheme does add a certain uniqueness to it. You'd think we were in a soap opera or something."
"Or a fairy tale." Bianca offers.
Frankie's voice takes on a timber similar to last night's. "And live happily ever after."
"And live happily ever after." Agrees Bianca, leaning into Frankie to be taken into her arms.
<the camera pans away and the scene fades into sunlight and joy>
Chapter 7h
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: Love confirmed and passion no longer denied, Bianca and Frankie renewed words of love to each other as well as actions.
setting: <Bianca's over at the local restaurant, looks like SOS sort of but name? Is it BJ's? If anyone knows please mention it to me,;) >
The day after the morning after.
Bianca's eating curly fries. She doesn't notice her mother entering the restaurant.
Erica spies her daughter and quickly makes off to the side, out of Bianca's line of vision. No sooner has she done so than Frankie walks through the door.
Frankie catches sight of Bianca and runs over to her whooping, startling Bianca comically.
"Hey girlfriend," Frankie, wearing the biggest grin, plunks herself down on the seat nearest Bianca. "You weren't gonna eat my favourite curly fries without me and not leave me any were ya?"
"Absolutely." Bianca garbles laughing with a mouth full of said fries.
"Wench. Just for that, maybe I won't ask for your help."
Bianca gracefully wipes her mouth on a napkin. "Help? Would whatever it is be the reason you're in such a good mood?"
Frankie feigns fainting, with a hand dramatically against her head. "I may pass out from hunger before I can deliver my news-"
Bianca effectively puts a curly fry into Frankie's mouth. Frankie chomps on it happily.
Endeared by her frisky, happy love, Bianca smiles and pursues the cause of it. "I take it this is good news?"
Frankie finishes off her fry. "Actually I don't know."
"What do you mean you don't know?"
Frankie pauses, running a hand through her hair. Bianca recognizes the gesture as nervousness. "What is it?" she asks.
Frankie reaches into her back pocket and hands over an envelope. Bianca picks it up looking from Frankie to what's in her hands. Unbeknownst to either of them, Erica is spying.
"It's from the university." Bianca thinks it through than realizes what it must be. "Frankie! This is your acceptance letter! But you haven't opened it?"
"Yeah, I'm kind of, I dunno, excited but I'm nervous about opening it. What if they reject me?"
"They'd be fools to. But you know Frankie, the only way to find out is to read what's inside."
"Would you?"
Bianca's surprised at the request. "It's your letter Frankie, don't you want to open it?"
"Nu-uh! If it's bad news I want you to break it to me."
Bianca considers the request. "You sure?"
Frankie nods then adds, "Please?"
"Now?" Bianca looks to her.
"Now."
Using her thumb nail she easily tears it along the seam and pulls the letter out. She scrutinizes it's contents. She checks Frankie's condition. Frankie has her hands over her eyes but is peeking through a thumb and forefinger.
"Well? Shall I 'beweep my outcast state'?" Frankie asked, high strung.
"No Shakespeare," Bianca leans over the table and kisses her while handing the letter in front of her, " you'll be going to PVU."
Frankie's hands drop completely and her eyes go wide." Really?"
"Read it for yourself."
Frankie gabs the letter and reads it eagerly. She reads it again. By the third time, it's sinking in. "I'm going to university."
"Yep, we'll be attending together in the Fall."
"Oh my gosh Bianca I'm going to university!" Frankie about squeals, bouncing in her chair. She lets out a whoop and jumps up to pull Bianca from her seat and hug her excitedly. " *We're* going to university!!"
Bianca gives in and hugs her back just as hard, laughing. "We'll be the terror on the campus!"
Frankie release her after a few more bounces and sits down. She's still holding the letter and rereads it again.
Bianca still standing, gazes at her. She softly smiles and leans over to place a stray lock of hair back behind Frankie's ear.
Frankie looks up at her as soon as she felt her touch. She notes Bianca's _expression. "What is it?"
Bianca takes in the flushed face and sparkling eyes. "You look like a little kid at Christmas."
"Getting into university really means a lot to you doesn't it?"
"Yeah, it's like I want to make something of myself you know? And now I have more reason than ever to get my life on track."
Playing coy, Bianca asks. "And what reason is that?"
Frankie reaches over and presses the letter in Bianca's hand, folding her hand over them both. "The reason is that I got a gift better than any Christmas present, or anything else, ever. And I plan to make good on my promise."
Bianca's touched by the words but frowned at the last part. "Promise?"
Frankie blushes but she holds Bianca's eyes as warmly as she holds her hand. "The promise I made myself after the night we...made love. That I would do everything I can to be the person you deserve Bianca."
"Oh" . Bainca expels air softly and overcome, kisses her. It's a short kiss but filled with love. "I think we need to celebrate."
Frankie pulls them both up from the booth. "That's why I date you Bianca. I love how you think!"
Giggling, they leave the restaurant.
Erica's eyes follow them.

<David and Anna's room>
David walks in the front door, keys still in hand.
"Anna?" He calls out, putting his keys on the he desk.
He hears the shower as his answer. Glancing down at the desk he sees a folder. The name FRANKIE STONE is written clearly on the label tab.
"What's this?" He picks it up frowning and opens it. At first he leafs through it than begins to read it more attentively.
Anna walks out of the shower in a towel and startles when she sees David. "David! I wasn't expecting you home so soon."
"I guess not." David states displeased. "Otherwise you would have had time to hid e this!" He holds the file up accusingly.
Anna tries to cover, "I don't know what your talking about. I was just going through some older files, tidying up." She reaches for the file. David holds it aloft.
"Why don't you start your 'tidying up' by telling me why my wife is lying to me about investigating my cousin?!"
Mexican stand-off of stares.
tbc most assuredly/
Chapter 7i
note: thus far in Dichotomy, Vanessa hasn't yet been caught though the noose is tightening.
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: Frankie's been accepted into PVU. Erica overheard the exchange b/t Frankie and Bianca. David has found out that Anna's been investigating his cousin Frankie.
setting: David and Anna's room.
"So Anna, are you going to explain to me the meaning of this? Why are you investigating my cousin?" He taps the folder on the he desk meaningfully. "Because we both know," he closes the distance between them, "that you're lying."
"Now that's a rather harsh thing to say to your wife." She takes the file and puts in into a locked drawer.
"Don't you trust me Anna? Of course not, after all, I'm only your husband."
Anna's not so easily cowed. "You're only my husband to escape criminal charges or did you forget all that?"
David seems honestly hurt. "I thought that despite the circumstances of our nuptials, that the sentiment was there. At least on my part. What about you?"
"Oh David, let's not go into this again. If you start up on the Willow trees I may well scream."
"I was only trying to please you Anna." David responds calmly. "You matter to me. After the way you stood up to me with Jackson I though you felt similarly. Am I mistaken? Or do I need to insist on you telling me how you feel about us?"
"You mean about you. " Anna runs a hand through her hair as she moves restlessly around the small quarters. "It's always about you, your ego knows no bounds."
David shrugs, "So I'm arrogant. It's part of my charm."
"Hmm, it's part of something." Anna retorts flippantly but a small curve of her lips shows her affection.
David moves in close again, sliding his arms around her. "Does that mean we're still going to try to make it as a happily married couple?"
"Married yes, " Anna answers still facetious. "Happily, I don't know. We're both rather prone to danger."
"We both love it, it's what I find intoxicating about you.." He moves in to kiss her. Anna responds passionately than reluctantly pulls away.
"No David, we can't do this. We can't keep seducing each other while trying to find out what secrets we're both hiding."
David gives his best come hither smile. "You show me yours and I'll show you mine."
Anna's very tempted to take advantage of his body then and there but resists her own primal urges, looking at him with a mix of reproach and lust. "Fine, " she says gamely. "I'll tell you all about my extra curricular activities if you tell me something."
David considers. "Quid pro quo. I can live with that. What do you want to know?"
"I'll share my files with you, if in return, you tell me everything you know about Vanessa."

<restaurant where Erica sits with Opal>
"Thank you so much Opal for coming to see me on such short notice like this." Erica gushed.
"Anything I can do for you honey, you know that. But I gotta tell ya, from what you've told me I don't see what the problem is."
"What the problem is?" Erica stressed the last word in great dismay. "She has my daughter completely under her thrall Opal! My child!"
"Now, now Erica, "Opal says compassionately, patting her hand. "I know everything got off to a bumpy start-"
"She nearly had my daughter killed! That is far more than merely a bumpy start!"
"But Erica honey, that wasn't her fault. That was that snake in the he grass Seth fellow and that Proteus character. She tried to save her and she did. And now you tell me she's enrolled in university and her and Bianca seem really happy...It sounds to me like she's pulling herself up by her boot straps and doing good by Bianca."
"But that's just it Opal," Erica persists. "She'll try but what happens when she fails? And she will. Someone like that can try to change their spots but a wolf in sheep's clothing is still a wolf. And when she gets frustrated or disappoints my daughter, she'll hurt Bianca. She's hurt my daughter's big, generous heart and I just don't think Bianca could withstand that kind of anguish after everything's she's gone through." Erica quickly dabs at the tears in her eyes.
"Oh sweetie, you need to give that daughter of yours more credit. She's one of the strongest young people I have ever seen. And I see them together Erica. They truly love each other. You don't have to like or even trust Mary-Francis but you are gonna have ta accept the fact that she is a big part of your daughter's life. Otherwise you might lose Bianca."
"But that's just it Opal, I'm so afraid of losing my daughter." Erica cries helplessly.
"Erica you won't, " Opal reassures her firmly. "If you just let her into your life, accepting that that means Frankie too. I mean, you tow love each other so much, no one and nothing's can get between that except your fool-headed selves. You're both stubborner than a goat."
Erica smiles slightly at the comparison. "Goats don't sound very glamorous."
Opal leans in meaningfully, "And neither is you two fighting with each other when all either of you wants is to love each other and have that love returned."
"Oh, do you really think so Opal?"
"I most certainly do. Now the question is what are you gonna do Erica? Keep butting heads with Bianca or find a way through this mess you've gotten yourselves into?"
Erica worries at the tissue in her hand. "I don't know how."
"You march yourself on over there like you did before and you talk to your daughter. Tell her how you feel about her. Not about Frankie. Tell Bianca you love her and miss her like crazy. I think you'll find out that she's been feeling the exact same way."
"Maybe Opal. I can certainly try. For Bianca's sake."
************************
<outside Myrtle's house>
Bianca and Frankie walk up to the door.
"Well, here we are." Frankie slaps her hands to her sides.
"You're not coming in?" asks Bianca, surprised.
"Nah, I think you need to sleep and I've got courses to pick out. You know, choose my course curriculum and all that other student stuff." Frankie grins widely. "Besides, I don't think Myrtle would feel comfortable with me staying over. I don't think I would feel comfortable being close to you knowing Myrtle's in the house."
Bianca laughs gently while stepping closer to Frankie. "Are you telling me your shy?"
Frankie blushes involuntarily. Bianca can't resist and kisses her, taking Frankie pleasantly by surprise.
The kiss breaks and both girls are breathless.
"Are you rethinking your earlier decision about not coming in?" Bianca teases.
Frankie's eyes dance. "I might when I can think again."
They both laugh. Finally, they move apart. Their hands not yet letting go.
"I guess you better go." Bianca says.
"Yeah. " Frankie says half-heartedly. "The letter even mentioned a scholarship for me to apply for. I want to fill that out and get it mailed right away."
"Frankie, that's so awesome. Really. I'm so proud of you."
"Yeah?"
"Yes. Absolutely."
"Me too." Frankie states with a gentle smile of wonder. "You're the best Bianca'la. Call you tonight?"
"You better." Bianca smiles back.
"I will. " Frankie says teasingly as she gives her another kiss and than leaves to head for Opal's. "This day just couldn't get any better."
*************************************
David spreads his hands from where he's lounging on the bed. "I'm sorry I don't have more for you. But that's honestly everything I know about Vanessa. Her erratic behaviour. The works."
"It gives me a few angles to go on." Anna speculates. "Any thoughts on Frankie?"
"Other than that she's had a rough go at it and is trying to do well for herself, and I think Bianca. No. But even though you've told me that Bianca at first wanted you to do this investigation, she hasn't pursued it since. So why are you still digging into that young girl's life?"
Both of Anna's eyebrows rise at his words from where she sits on the bed. "You like her."
"Who do I like? Bianca? Well her mother and I did see a lot of each other for awhile..."
"No. You like Frankie."
David thinks about it. "Yes, I guess I do. She's had a hard life but she refuses to let it get the best of her. She makes Bianca happy. She's definitely has the redwood size chip on her shoulder that everyone in this family seems to carry. I just, I don't now, I think she's bright with a bright future ahead of her."
Anna looks at him indulgently and nudges his arm gently. " I like her too." After a moment she adds, "And you don't have to worry about this softer, family oriented side of you getting out to the public. It can be our secret."
David chuckles. "One of our many secrets."
Anna leans back beside him, smiling that half-smile of hers. "I suppose so. Regrets?"
"None."
"So," David returns to the original topic. "what is it that has you so interested in my cousin. Aside from your genuine liking of her?"
"It's these damn blocks and dead ends that I keep coming across. Did you know there's a huge block of about ten years where there is no trace, none whatsoever, on the Stone family?"
"No, I haven't had much if anything to do with them. I can't even remember them. Is it that big a deal?"
"It is when even the best in the business can't find a trace of those missing years. And of one missing person."
"Missing person?" David frowns. "Who's missing?"
"Frankie's father," Anna reveals with the utmost seriousness. "There's no record of him anywhere. Only his name, Michael Stephen Stone."
***********************
Frankie's getting near Opal's house. Actually humming to herself filled with thought of happy days, blue skied futures, all with the person who she's given her heart to.And who's heart she has in turn.
That must be why she didn't hear the person sneaking up behind her.
A hand grabs her shoulder, twisting her around. A rough voice whispers, "Hey there sugar, now is that nay way to say greet me after all these years? Didn't I tell you you couldn't get away? That I would find you no matter where you ran? And here I am baby. I'm here for you."
Frankie looks up at the face leering over hers. She hears the familiar voice but can't believe it. The shock brings on adrenalin and out of pure terror she screams "NO!" pulling away from the large hand and turning around to run for her life.
WARNING: BIG TIME HARSHNESS HERE. IF WANT TO AVOID PLEASE SKIP! WAIT UNTIL EVEN THE NEXT PART BECAUSE THIS SEGMENT IS EXTREMELY UNPLEASANT. It's necessary for the story's progression. Particularly the court drama ahead.
Chapter 7j
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: Frankie's been accepted into PVU. Erica is considering a truce with Frankie for the sake of her relationship with her daughter. Alone, Frankie is confronted with her worst nightmare. And he's chasing her.
setting: Somewhere in Pine Valley.
Frankie ran and ran until her lungs were on fire and her legs were numb.
It would never be fast enough. It could never be far enough to keep her safe. She had thought differently when she first left home but now, here, just when she thought finally safe. He was after her.
"Got ya!" He yelled, grabbing her from an unsuspecting corner she was about to turn.
If she had breath she would have screamed.
He pressed her up against the brick wall. No one was around.
He smiled, she noticed, actually smiled down at her raggedly breathing self and than had the audacity to laugh.
"You never could get away from me sweetheart. I always told you that but you never did listen."
"Managed to get you off my back since I first left home at fifteen you lech." She managed. "And don't call me sweetheart you twisted son of a-"
The back hand was sudden. She should have expected it, she thought but she was a few years out of practice. The terror was there, a cold lump in her stomach. She wiped the blood off looking at it on her sleeve. It managed to make her angry enough to push against him.
"See you haven't changed." She ground out.
"Neither has your smart mouth." He ground out. Than an evil light gleamed in his dark eyes. "And neither has your disgusting tendencies."
She swallowed the fear and used the anger even as her body shook from head to toe. "Youre my father, who can't keep his hands to himself. Don't try to tell me I'm the one who's deviant!"
Frankie's father shook her. Hard. "Don't you keep smart mouthing me! I found you Mary-Francis! I will always find you!"
"Not for four years you didn't." She stammered through shaking teeth.
He stopped his manhandling and but kept a bruising grip on her arms. "I found you now. And that's all that counts. Good thing I did what with the way you were carrying on with that girl. It would break your mother's heart to have seen you...kissing....some other girl like that."
"Really?" Frankie scoffed. "Mom would cry if she was ever sober enough to realize her hubby and the father of her children was coming on to his adolescent daughter?"
"I was just trying to teach you a lesson! The way you were carrying on, you were-"
"Asking for it?" Frankie seethed while her mind struggled out of it's shock to find a way around the figure she has run from for the past four years. "A daughter never asks to be beat up or molested by anyone let alone her own father. I have no family! And I'll run again! You didn't find me before. I'll run and you'll never find me again!" She tried to break free of his grip but he just laughed and pushed her against the wall harder.
The next words froze her heart.
"But I know where to find your girlfriend Mary-Francis."
Frankie stared up at him with the dread that understanding brought. Her father was smug as he stared down at her wide eyes.
"That's right honey. You keep putting out like a whore to that rich brat and I'll find out what she likes so much about being with trailer trash like you. Maybe she just needs a real man."
"No." she breathed out.
"Oh yeah, baby, you know that I'll do it."
"What," she swallowed convulsively,"what do you want?"
His features turned completely feral with malicious delight. "I want what you wouldn't give me four years ago."
Frankie slowly shook her head back and forth.
"Or I'll try to find it from somewhere else."
Frankie kept shaking her head whispering over and over "This isn't happening, this isn't happening."
"It is baby girl. Believe your old man, I'm here, it's happening. And you are mine. And you better start showing that by breaking it off with that perverted high society girl or else...."
Frankie's blood became ice in her veins.
"I'll make her my girl too."
Michael Stone let go of his daughter, sure now of his hold on her. "I'll be watching so don't try to run this time. I'll wait, make sure you prove yourself to me, and then you'll be coming home with me. You're gonna be daddy's little girl."
He strode off.
Frankie slid down the wall, the whispers of denial unable to stop issuing from her lips.
Chapter 7k
song: Strange Days by Dave Mathews Band. I don't own 'em, no infringement or harm intended, etc. I know this would most likely not be used in the actual soap but I found it too good a tune to pass up right now. The lyrics are denoted by * before and after.
note: thus far in Dichotomy, Vanessa hasn't yet been caught though the noose is tightening.
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: Frankie's father has returned. We learned that the reason she left home was due to his abuse and sexual advances which she avoided by running away.. He's given her a threat, break up with Bianca and return 'home' with him, or he'll assault Bianca.
setting: Opal's. Frankie's room.
Late, late evening. The lights are out. Frankie enters her room slowly. She doesn't bother turning on the light. Outside lights catch her eyes which are dark, wounded like an animals. She runs her palms over her jacket her clothes over and over like she's trying to wipe something foul smelling off. With a strangled cry she begins to take off her cloth going into the bathroom. The shower is turned on.
*****************
Bianca is sleeping in her room at Myrtle's. She's smiling at some pleasant dream. The jerking sound of the phone mercilessly drags her from it. Desperately she grabs at the phone.
"Hello?" She says in a sleep roughened voice.
"Bianca."
Bianca frowns, she recognizes the voice, but doesn't at the same time for it's in a tone she's never heard. A tone that makes her lover sound like a stranger.
"Frankie? What's wrong? Are you okay?"
"Well, no actually I'm not."
"Why not?"
"I can't go through with it anymore."
Bianca fully sits up now thoroughly befuddled. "What are you talking about? Frankie what's wrong? I can tell from your voice that something's wrong."
"You don't know me to know what I feel." Frankie coldly states. "The problem is..." the voice on the other end falters but then comes back determinedly " the problem is you Bianca. I can't keep up this goody tow shoes routine especially since you're not paying out for it."
All the breath leaves Bianca in a rush. "Wh-what are you...?"
"I mean it Bianca. I don't want you coming around me anymore all puppy like looking for any scrap of attention. It's not my fault you mom spoils you so you think the sun should rise and set on you and you alone. I've got better things to do."
"Frankie, is this some kind of joke? It's not funny. Why are you doing this?"
A heavy, beleaguered sigh. "Let me spell this out for ya, I'm not into girls Bianca. Never was. Your mommy dearest was right, it was all about the con. And now I see that it's not really getting my pockets lined so I'm quitting while I'm ahead. Besides, you were boring me."
"No Frankie, you can't mean this? What on earth happened tonight. Why are you doing this to us?"
"No sweetheart, that's where you're wrong. There is no us. I mean it, leave. me. Alone. I don't want to see your needy face around me got that?"
"No Frankie I don't 'get it'! And don't think I won't go over there to find out what the hell has happened with you!"
"I wouldn't do that if I were you. I met a guy and he's entertaining me right now. As a matter of fact, I don't want to keep him waiting. And hey Bianca, it was fun at first, at least you were a good time for a while."
The phone goes dead.
Bianca's heart dies with it.
****************************
Frankie looks at her hand on the phone. She starts for the bathroom but doesn't make it. Instead she grabs her bedside trash and empties the contents of her stomach in it. She's so far beyond weeping that her whole body is trembling violently as she dry heaves, having nothing left to give except for bile and blood. She leans against the bed, every word a tear. "Oh God Bianca, oh God. What have I done? Please, please let her be safe. If you owe me anything, if you owe her, please protect her from me, from all the harm I could bring her. I had to do this. I had to."
*Good morning
don't cop out
you crawled from the cancer to land on your feet
are you crazy to want this
even for a while?
we're making this shit up
the reasons for being are easy to pay
you can't remember the others
they just kind of went away*
She drags herself up to stumble over to the desk where there's some water. Her eyes fall first upon the letter of admissions from the university. Her hand touches it weakly. A laugh, broken and sobbing, gasps out of her.
*the cars on the freeway are moving like slugs
when you drift off to wake up
do you always hit the brakes?
we're done lying for a living
the strange days have come and you're gone
either dead or dying
either dead or trying to go*
Than her eyes catch the sparkle of gold. The locket. She picks it up gingerly. The letter is crumpled in her other hand. She holds the locket to her chest until the metal pressing into her skin hurts.
*it's evening, you're tired
you sleep walk, a robot out on the street
are you crazy to want this, even for a while? you're driving, it's rush hour
the cars on the freeway are moving backwards
into a wall of fire*
She sobs openly now. Holding the precious symbols of the future she had to throw away. She looks up at the ceiling with an absolute despair.
"Why? Why did you have to take it all away now? Just when I was happy? Why did you have to make it so that she would be hurt again? Damn you, damn you. And damn me too for being the one who had to do this."
*we're done lying for a living
the strange days have come and you're gone
either dead or dying
either dead or trying to go
good morning
don't cop out*
Frankie weeps brokenly, lost.
Chapter 7l
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy. Frankie broke up with Bianca.
setting: The morning after. Opal's, early.
Bianca rushes into the house. Opal is there walking through the main room.
"Why Bianca honey, it's early to be seeing you. Good mornin' to y-" Her words went unheard as Bianca launched herself up the stairs without pause.
She didn't even knock, going straight into Frankie's room.
It was empty.
The bed wasn't made but it didn't look slept in either. Bianca went to the bed, she balled up the sheets bringing them close to her face. All she could smell was to a lesser extent herself, the rest was the scent of her lover, ex-lover. Bianca closed her eyes.
"Honey what on Earth is going on?"
Bianca looked to Opal, her face strained and longing. "Opal, did you hear Frankie come in last night?"
"Well yes, "She answered, stepping into the room. "It woke me up because it was so late. I almost thought is was some intruder I'd have to hog-tie. Now what's this about honey?"
"It's.. " Bianca stumbled over the words, her hands dropped to her waist still clutching the sheets, "Frankie called me last night. She said..that she was with a guy."
"What? Oh no sweetie, she must of been foolin' you though I don't think it was a kind joke. Why I would have hear if some man was in my house, I assure you. She was all alone last night. In fact she was sick."
"Sick? Was it a fever? Is she at the doctor's?"
"Well I don't think it was anything more than an upset tummy but I noticed this morning that she had her garbage pale down here and had tried to clean it. A mite unsuccessfully too. Poor thing mustn't have been able to make it to the bathroom."
"Oh, well maybe she's at the doctor's now."
"That could well be," Opal frowned, mightily concerned now about both the girls. "Why don't you call her and see? Maybe this is all just a misunderstanding." She went over and put an arm around Bianca giving her a warm hug.
"Yeah, maybe but she said such awful things Opal. Maybe it could be because she's sick?"
"I think you need to find out so you won't continue to be in such a state."
A corner of the fallen sheets shifted as they both stepped away from the bed, knocking an envelope off the bedside table that they hadn't noticed before.
"What's this?" Bianca kneels and picks it up.
Opal peers over her shoulder. "Well it's addressed to you Bianca. Maybe Frankie didn't want you to worry."
"Than why not call me? What is going on?" Bianca puzzled as she opened the letter. Pulling it out she read it. And paled.
She read the letter a second time. Her legs gave out from under her and she landed sitting on the bed, shocked. Holding the letter loosely.
Alarmed, Opal goes to her side. "Bianca, what's the matter? What did the letter say?"
Not getting an answer, she gently pulls the paper from Bianca's unresisting fingers.
She reads aloud:
"I knew you'd come over. That's why I left. I told you last night I want nothing to do with you. You're just a con gone wrong. Get it through that dense skull of yours and keep away from me. I mean it.
Frankie
"Oh Bianca," her heart cried for the broken hearted young woman she cares for so deeply.
Bianca moves away from the comforting hand and stands up. "No,no, no no. This makes no sense. Everything was fine. She's not like this Opal. It can't be true! It just can't! I love hr!"
Opal stands. "I know you do deary. You have such a big heart. But whether her reasons are true or not, she obviously doesn't want you near her right now. I wish I knew what to say to you. But matters of the heart are trials for each person individually. I sure wish I could spare you this pain. It's odd though, she really seemed on the up and up. Why that little so and so just flew under my radar if this is true."
"It can't be true. It can't!" Bainca cries, in tears.
"Honey, I don't know that there's anything you can do.."
Bianca vibrates with upset and determination born out of sheer desperation. "It can't be true Opal. Because I know she loves me. You can't be like that in someone's arms, letting them know all of you and then be lying. You just can't." Here she falters, than beseeches her mother's friend. "Can you?"
"Oh, come here you poor, dear child. " Opal embraces her. "I wish I could answer that for you Bianca I do."
Bianca reluctantly pulls away from the comforting embrace. "Well, I'm going to find out. And I know how I'm going to do it."
She walks out of the bedroom full speed, leaving a very worried Opal in her wake.
******************
<Pine Valley Park>
Frankie's is walking brusquely through the park. Her head down and hands in her pockets. From offside, her father grabs her and pulls her off the path.
He shakes her roughly. "You did what I told you to do?"
She pulls away from him sharply, looking up at him. Hating him. "If you mean did I rip out Bianca's heart so that you wouldn't get your paws on her, then yes, I did what you told me to do."
"Don't you get mouthy with me Mary-Francis." He warns her menacingly.
She breathes harshly, torn between her terror and her hate.
"Now all we got have to do is make sure your little friend leaves you alone. Wouldn't do to have her sticking her nose into our business, right?" He looks at her expectantly.
"Right," she agrees for completely different reasons.
He approaches her, she steps away quickly. Michael laughs at her.
"Don't worry, I'll be saving it all up for our reunion later. Just remember, you're my girl. The apple don't fall far from the tree. You're as rotten as I am deep down. That stuck up spoiled thing you've been spending your time with would've seen that sooner or later. I did you a favour. You belong with your own. And that's me Mary-Francis."
Michael departs.
Frankie watches him go, a haunted _expression on her face. She takes a couple of steps, falters to lean against a nearby tree. Lost inside, she can't help but cry brokenly into her hands. She fights it though, she fights it hard. She doesn't deserve to cry, she thinks.
Steps approach, and a scathing voice rattles her.
"Don't tell me, you're already two-timing Bianca and it's with an older guy. How Jerry Springer of you. But I wouldn't expect anything else from trash like you."
Shocked, Frankie turns to stare at her attacker.
It's Greenlee Smyth.
Chapter 7m
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy. Bianca went to Frankie's only to find a blunt dear jane letter. Meanwhile, Frankie had another encounter with her father, shaken, she was in the midst of trying to compose herself when Greenlee threw in her unwanted observations.
setting: The park.
"What did you just say?" Frankie asked her, stepping closer.
Greenlee shrugged indifferent. "Just stating the obvious. Does that have to be done a lot for you?"
"How much did you hear? What did you see!" Frankie demanded, grabbing Greenlee.
"Hey!" Greenlee pulled away and stared at her as if the woman had grown two heads. "Don't confuse me with your girlfriend alright, miss Mental Case? Keep your mitts to yourself. Though I didn't know Bianca was into rough trade." She smirked at that last sally.
Frankie got up into her face and enunciated very precisely through her clenched teeth, "What did you hear Greenlee?"
"Nothing okay? God, what is your trauma? Look, just stay away from me and stick with your melodramatic girlfriend. Or that new boyfriend of yours-"
<SLAP!>
Both girls looked at each other in shock. Greenlee had a hand to her stinging cheek. Frankie had her hand out by her waist as if it was an appendage she didn't recognize.
"Oh my god!" said an all too familiar voice coming closer." What on earth is going on here? Frankie are you okay?" Bianca walked over to Frankie, appalled at what she just saw.
Greenlee was the first to recover. "You ever come near me again you psycho freak, and I will call the cops and press charges on your delinquent butt so fast your head will spin."
"What," Bianca repeated, "is going on here?"
"None of your business." Frankie sputtered.
"You've been crying." Bianca walked stepped closer, concerned she reached out a hand to Frankie's face.
Frankie pulled away and slapped the hand back. "What is wrong with you? Didn't you get my letter? God! Why do I have to keep being put through this?"
Bianca stung, stepped *back* from her. "Being put through what? Yes, I got your letter. I also have another letter you wrote me. Which of them is the truth Frankie?" She bit her lip to try to keep from crying.
"Hello? Assaulted woman here!" Greenlee states, affronted at being ignored.
Both Bianca and Frankie turned in unison and shouted "Shut-up!"
They turn back to each other, their gazes intense. "Believe what you want. Just stay away from me."
Bianca shook her head in disbelief. "It's like I don't even know you. I don't know who you are. Why are you acting like a stranger?"
Frankie choked back a howl of frustration. "That's just it Bianca. You don't know me. You never did. And I sure as hell wish you never met me!" She turned and stalked off.
"NO..." Bianca reached out to her, trying to catch her arm.
Frankie whirled out of reach and shouted at her, "Get it through your over-privileged head: I don't want you anywhere near me! Stay away!!"
She left.
Bianca watched her go. She found it hard to breathe. To think. All she felt was the agony ripping her up inside. She crumbled into a heap on the ground, weeping, heartbroken.
Having watched the entire exchange, Greenlee Smyth looked on with something akin to sympathy on her eloquent features. She made to leave but then hesitated, glancing back at the desolate young woman sobbing but a few feet away. Finally, she went over to Bianca. Kneeling down beside her she said in a voice much gentler than most people would believe, "Come on Bianca, you don't want to stay here. Get up. I'll take you back to mine and Leo's place where you can get yourself cleaned up. He's there now."
Bianca resisted the unexpected aid at first. "What does it matter? He can't help me. No one can. I'm an idiot."
Greenlee sighed, and smoothed some of Bianca's hair back. "No you're not an idiot. Your girlfriend is for not having the sense to stick with you. And having someone who cares does help. It certainly helped Leo out through a lot of rough times when he could turn to you to listen to him. It's about time he returned the favour so come on. We're getting out of here."
Greenlee lifted, and Bianca let her. Keeping an arm around the fragile girl, Greenlee led her out of the shadows and towards the light of her apartment building.
Chapter 7n
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy. A confrontation between Bianca and Frankie ensued with Greenlee as a witness. Frankie pushed Bianca away from her again and left, Greenlee took the road less travelled and comforted Bianca.
setting: Greenlee's and Leo's apartment.
Anna is pacing around the room ranting to Leo.
"It's just that he's always up to something! I mean, the man can do the sweetest things and yet still be so manipulative. For god's sake Leo, he was talking about Willow trees!"
Completely baffled, Leo strives for a compassionate face but has to ask, "Willow trees?"
"Willow trees!" Anna announces, her hands accentuating the statement as if that should explain everything.
"Leo, honestly now, you're his brother. DO you think-"
The door slides open and in comes Greenlee with a sobbing Bianca on her arm.
Both Anna and Leo rush over, voicing questions of concern.
"Guys tone it down please." Insists Greenlee. "Just help me get her on to the couch. Anna, can you please get her a glass of water?"
"Of course." Anna retrieves the glass of water as Leo helps Bianca settle on the couch.
"Binky, best bud, what happened?" Leo puts an arm around her sitting beside her.
"I'm sorry." Bianca struggles to control her weeping. "You have company. I shouldn't have come over. I'll go." She would have tried to get up to leave but tow things stopped her: Leo's arm tightening around her and Greenlee's hand pressing down on her shoulder.
"I don't think she should be going anywhere Leo." a surprisingly concerned Greenlee tells him.
"Right with ya Greens. So you can tell big bro here what's the what? You now I'll take care of you."
Anna hands over the glass of water. "Can you tell us what happened Bianca?"
"It's her lousy taste in girlfriends. I mean, first crazy psycho Laura and now Frankie's wigging out on her. " Greenlee supplies ever so helpfully.
"I don't understand." Anna spares the briefest of frowns for Greenly before returning fully to Bianca. "Did something happen between you and Frankie?"
Clearly distraught, Bianca replies, "Yes, but I don't understand what or how or why?" That last word said with great anguish. "Everything was fine, it was better than fine. We were together, dating, and so close...than out of nowhere she tells me it was all a con and she doesn't want anything to do with me. She wants me to stay away from her. She acts like she can't stand the sight of me! And I don't know why! What went wrong? What did I do?"
Leo hugs her carefully. "Your perfect Binky. It must be like Greenlee said, the girl is wigging out or something."
"Her 'something' is attacking innocent people Leo!" Greenlee puts forward. "God knows what she might have done to me if Bianca hadn't interrupted."
"What do you mean?" Both Leo and Anna ask at the same time though not in perfect unison.
Bianca rubs at her face and eyes. "Yeah Greenlee, why did Frankie slap you?"
"She hit Greens?" Leo asked going over to his sweetie. "Are you alright babe?"
"Barely." Greenlee pouts. "And I'd hardly call that a slap. The girl almost damaged my perfect face!"
"That's so not like her though." Bianca regains composure as she turns her mind to the problem at hand. "What is it you said to her?"
"I'd like to know as well." Anna states.
Greenlee makes an exasperated sound. "Fine! Since you must know I saw your ex in some intense moment with some guy and then she was crying. I mentioned the word boyfriend and she went all Sapphic psycho on me!"
"This isn't making any sense at all." Anna puts her hands on her hips, thinking hard. "Who was 'this guy' that you saw Frankie with?"
Bianca looks to Greenlee, wondering.
"What am I? Star witness here?" At the impatient look on Anna's face she relents somewhat. "Alright, alright. He was older, younger than my father but not by a lot. Fit. I suppose rugged good looks. Dark blonde. Regular clothes from any cheap-mart....no one I'd want near me."
"Because you don't approve of his lack of designer clothes Greens? " Leo teases to cover his concern for the most important women in his life.
"Shallow much?" Greenlee retorts, unphased. "No, it wasn't is Joe-regular clothing sense it was more...he creeped me out."
"Creeped you out? How exactly?" Anna pursues.
"His eyes." Greenlee's gaze is turned inward remembering. "I wasn't close enough to hear what they said but his eyes were...cold. No, more than cold, they were cruel."
"Gosh baby that guy sounds scumville all the way. I'm so glad you're safe." Leo holds her to him.
Greenlee laps the attention up. "It was so nerve racking. And my face hurts where Butch hit me."
"Let's get some ice on that." Leo hastens to attend to her. He spares a glance for Bianca and Anna. "Will you two be alright for a couple of minutes while I take care of the love of my life?"
Anna holds up a hand. "Please." Is all she says.
"Go ahead Leo." Bianca offers.
Leo bends over to give her a quick peck on the top of her head. "Be back in a jip."
After they're gone, Anna sits down next to Bianca. "Did you see this man Bianca?"
Bianca shakes her head. "No, not at all. I came in just when Frankie slapped her."
"Hmm." Anna ponders. "Has she received any strange calls lately that you're aware off? Met any one you don't know?"
Bianca thinks back. "No, nothing like that. What are you thinking?"
"I don't want to speculate."
"Anna please! She's my heart." Bianca entreated.
Anna considers, than says guardedly. "I can't help but wonder if Seth had friends, someone who might want payback."
"Someone like Proteus you mean?" The younger woman's eyes go wide at the idea.
"Exactly." Anna nods once, precise. "That is why I need you to do something for me Bianca. No matter how hard it may be. It's for both yours and Frankie's sake."
"What is it? I'll do anything."
"Stay away from Frankie."
"What? No, you can't be-"
"Serious? Oh yes, I am." Anna tells her in deadly sincerity. "Do exactly as she says. Don't try to contact her in any manner. Don't call her, if you see her on the street walk the other way. Above all do not see her Bianca. If this is Proteus or some revenge by some associate of that filth Seth's, than both your lives may be in danger. If, though, it's just that she is a con or had a change of heart I *will * find out. Until I know, you are to stay clear. Do you understand?"
Reluctantly, Bianca agrees. "Okay."
Anna reaches over and squeezes her hand. "Good girl." Anna's cell rings, making them both start a little.
She retrieves her phone and puts it to her ear. "Duvane here." What is said on the other phone makes her glance quickly at the preoccupied Bianca before turning her back to the younger woman and speaking quietly on the phone. "When was this? Anyone else there? How about a dark blonde male. No. just keep an eye on it. I'll be right there."
She turns back gathering her things. "Well, a chief's duty is never done it seems. I have to go Bianca but you will stay here and do as we discussed?"
"Yes, I will." Bianca responds quietly.
Anna's heart goes out to the stricken girl. "Try not too worry. I'll get to the bottom of this, I promise you."
"I know. Thank you for everything Anna."
Anna gives a fleeting smile. "I care about her too Bianca. I'll make sure she's okay. You take care of yourself."
Going out the door and closing it behind her, Anna lets out a breath. "I hope to hell I'm wrong about this one."
She strides off.
Back in the he apartment, Leo and Greenlee walk into the main area. Leo's tenderly helping to hold some ice against Greenlee's cheek.
"Are you sure there's no mark?" Greenlee asks worriedly.
"Not even so much as a smudge let alone a bruise. He kisses her other cheek reassuringly.
Something strikes him as he looks around the room.
"Hey, where'd Bianca go?"
************************
In a grungy part of Pine Valley.
Frankie's impatience is growing with the guy in the jeans and jogging jacket. "Are you going to sell it to me or not?"
"Look, how do I even know youre the legal age limit?" The guy asks.
"How can you be a legal age limit for something that's illegal in the first place you idiot!" She raise her voice in frustration. "Are you going to sell me the piece or not?"
"What does a young, pretty girl like you need one anyways?' The guy huffs.
"Spare me." She takes out a small wad of cash and shows it to him. "I have the cash. Now do you have the gun?"
Chapter 7o
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy. Anna left after a call. Bianca went missing from Leo's and Greens when she said she'd stay put. Frankie is buying a gun.
setting: alley
"Come on already" Frankie growls. "I've got the cash just hand me the piece!"
"Alright, alright, show me the green first." The shabby man hunches over, hands in his jogging jacket pockets.
"Uh uh. Let me see the gun."
"Here it is." He pulls out a hand gun. "You want. You pay."
Frankie pulls out a small wad of money. He reaches for it when a stern voice freezes them both.
"Nobody move!" Anna walks out of the shadows, gun out and aimed at the fellow with the weapon.
He makes to run but she's on him in an instant. A twist of his hand and next she slams him up along the wall. Pinning his front against the rough brick.
Frankie tires to edge her way clear, one sharp look from Anna gives her pause. "Don't even try it." She warns the young woman.
"So what do we have here, hm? A gun deal going down?" She takes his gun. "What's your name."
The snivelling seller immediately gave in to her demand. "Jo Bringbourm."
"Have you been in my city selling illegal guns long Ringworm?"
"It's Bringbourm." He whiningly protests while wincing as she slaps cuffs on him. "And I wasn't selling anything."
"Oh so you were just going to give her a gun out of the goodness of your heart? Touching." She calls over her shoulder. "McCaffey, take this one downtown."
A police officer comes in from the street and takes the man off her hands. "And the other one chief?"
"Anna faces Frankie. "I'll handle it. Get going."
"Right." McCaffey does as ordered and takes the man out.
"So what? You gonna arrest me?" Frankie spouts defensively.
"Not yet." Anna replies calm as a spring breeze. "First tell me what you want so desperately with a gun?"
"If you want to rattle my cage, just go ahead and bust me." Frankie smart mouths.
"Look, you're behaving like a twit but it doesn't mean we don't care what happens to you. You're obviously in trouble. I only want to help. And I can't help you if you don't tell me what on earth is going on."
Frankie holds her wrists out. "Slap them on already. I can't take the touchy feely stuff."
Anna faced down far more difficult quarry than the young Frankie Stone. "Bianca is worried sick about you. Don't you care about that?" She carefully regards Frankie for the slightest break in her facade.
Anguish flashes briefly in her eyes before she hardens and callously answers, "She was just a mark. Why would I care about what she thinks?"
But Anna saw the flicker of hurt. "If she was just a mark and you were just a con, you wouldn't care."
"Right" Frankie nods her head approvingly.
Anna steps closer and looks down at her. "So do you want to tell me why you obviously do care?"
"What the Hell are you talking bout?"
"I wasn't born yesterday Frankie."
"Yeah I know, super spy yada yada." Frankie frowns as an idea strikes her. "Is that how you found me? You've been spying on me?"
Anna's eyes narrow in speculation. "And if I have?"
"You have no right!" Frankie's shouts, deeply troubled by this possibility.
"I'm the chief of police. I have every right. After all, you were involved with Proteus. Which reminds me, where did you get the money for the gun?"
"None of your damn business."
"Legally it is. Unless you can explain where you got it from."
"You'll have to arrest me because I'm not telling you jack!"
"That's very interesting, because I am interested in finding out about a man but I doubt his name is Jack. Who's the man Greenlee saw you with earlier today Frankie?"
Frankie is breathing hard. She says nothing.
"Frankie," Anna gentles her tone, "I only want to help you. An trouble you're in, I'm sure we can find a way out. Together. You're not alone."
Frankie swallows, not knowing what to do with this unforeseen hand of friendship. She swallows hard. "It'd be a lot better off for everyone if I was alone. If I never came here."
"You are in trouble." Anna states, not a question.
"No, I'm not. I just need to get out and I need a gun."
"I believe you need help. Let me help you Frankie. Please."
"I've got nothing to say." Frankie maintains, refusing to put Bianca in any possible danger from her father. "So go ahead and bust me."
Anna considers her options. Finally after a tense moment of Frankie waiting to see what would happen, Anna steps back.
Frankie frowns, "What are you doing?"
"I'm giving you 24 hours. If by that time you don't come clean, I'll find you and we will finish our discussion here."
"I don't know what you want from me."
"The truth would be nice." Anna puts her hands tiredly on her hips. "Why no one in your family can just come out with the truth right off is beyond me. Twenty-four hours Frankie. Than if you haven't come to me, I'll find you."
Anna leaves.
Frankie stares after her a moment and then shakes her head. Her shoulders slump. Head down she leaves the alley.
A person in front of her way stops her. Frankie looks up.
"Bianca."
Chapter 7p
note: At the beginning when Bianca shows up, in the background the song Barely Breathing by Duncan Sheik is playing softly. P.s. I don't own the song, just fits well with BandF break-up. No harm intended or profit, etc, etc. Sample of the chorus for you as I don't want to intersperse this one with the text:
*Because I am barely breathing, I can't find the air,
Don't know who I'm kidding, Imagining you care.*
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy. Frankie tried to buy a gun only to be thwarted by Anna. Anna gave her a deadline to tell her the truth on what's going on. Leaving the back alley, Frankie finds herself face to face with Bianca.
setting: alley
"Bianca." Frankie said surprised. She recovered quickly. "What are you doing? Spying on me?" At Bianca's flash of guilt in her eyes, Frankie accused, enraged. "You did get Anna, miss 007 to spy on me didn't you!"
Distraught, Bianca tried to reason with her ex-lover, "I didn't mean to go behind your back but you're acting like a pod person. I know you're in trouble. I just want to be able to help. I don't want you to get hurt. I couldn't stand going through that again!"
Frankie shakes her head in disbelief. "After everything I've said to you, all I've done, why do you care?"
"Because I love you!" Bianca shouted. "I love you and you can't take that away from me. You can lie all you want but I know in my heart that what we shared was real!" She moves to approach Frankie but Frankie moves away.
"Is Anna right? Is it Proteus?" Bianca queried.
"Proteus I wish." Frankie muttered sub-vocally. "It has nothing to do with some drug lord Bianca. When are you going to get it? I don't want you around me." With real pain Frankie added, "I can't stand you being near me!"
Bianca fights to keep the tears back. "If it's not drugs than why do you need a gun?"
*Because I am barely breathing,I can't find the air,
Don't know who I'm kidding, Imagining you care.*
"I like to keep my bases covered and frankly, it's none of your business."
"How did you get the money to pay for it?" Bianca asked reluctantly.
A terrible, horrible idea bloomed in Frankie's desperate mind. "How do you think?" she asked sarcastically. "I just pawned that gaudy locket you gave me. For such a cheap looking thing it sure did score me some big bucks."
Bianca could barely breathe. "You sold the locket. My locket, the one my father gave to me?"
Frankie shrugged callously. "Hey, you gave it to me. It was mine to do what I want with it."
"But you know how much my father meant to me Frankie. How could you just ..sell it off like it was nothing?"
Flippantly, Frankie replied, "Your old man is dead, get over it already." She brushes by Bianca and leaves her standing there, sickened to her very soul.
"Bianca doesn't even look after her, she merely stands there. A thundercloud claps over head and rain begins to pour down on her, along with all her hopes and dreams.
**************************
At Opal's Frankie gets in slamming the door. She's soaked from the sudden downpour. It did nothing to wash away her shame. She slides down the closed door.
"That's it Bianca, hate me. Finally hate me and that way you'll be safe and stay away from me. " with trembling hands she pulls something out and under from her shirt. It's the locket. She clasps it tightly in her hands. "No matter how much you hate me now, it could never be more than I hate myself."
Chapter 7q
note: The song is "All You Wanted' by Michelle Branch. Lyrics marked by * before and after. Usual disclaimers apply.
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy. The confrontation b/t B and F didn't go well for either heroine. Frankie used harsh lies to push Bianca away, all to protect Bianca from the danger of being near her. This time, Bianca might believe her. Frankie lied that she pawned Bianca's father's locket. She did not, instead she keeps it as a reminder of Bianca's love..which she may now have lost for good...
setting: Opal's house. Frankie's room. Evening.
The rain falls down so hard it is almost louder than the thunder, but no matter how loud the sounds, it cannot measure to the whisper of a heart breaking.
Frankie sits alone. In the dark. She's curled, knees drawn up next to the window, staring blankly at the torrential downpour. The streetlights from outside casts a pallid glow to the lines of her face through the window glass. It's touch illuminates the shadows of rain drops as they run down the marred glass, reflecting the running water as though it were upon her cheeks.
The door opens suddenly. She looks up surprised to see Bianca, drenched by the rain, standing defiantly there.
*I wanted to be like you
I wanted everything
So I tried to be like you
And I got swept away
I didn't know that it was so cold
And you needed someone to show you the way
So I took your hand and we figured out
That when the tide comes I'd take you away
If you want to
I can save you
I can take you away from here
So lonely inside
So busy out there
And all you wanted was somebody who cares *
Bianca spies her in the dark and strides to her. Frankie stands unsteady and unsure as she stares into eyes darker than night. Bianca grabs her before she can utter a word and takes her shirt in her hands, ripping it unapologetically. The tear is enough. There for Bianca's eyes to see, is the locket Frankie said she sold. Bianca doesn't ask why. Nor does she wait to hear any excuses or further lies from the woman in front of her. Instead she pulls her closer and crushes her mouth to Frankie's. Frankie moves a hand up to push her away but her heart cannot. The hand turns into a strong clasp as she returns Bianca's fierce embrace and kisses her back like a woman drowning. There is nothing tender in their passion as Bianca begins to pull clothes off and Frankie follows. They attack each other with the honesty of their touches. They cling to one another like rafts in a storm.
*I'm sinking slowly
So hurry hold me
Your hand is all I have to keep me hanging on
Please can you tell me
So I can finally see
Where you go when you're gone *
Chapter 7r
note: We're starting to get into the area that begins to mirror certain moments of the TV soap from back Fall. However, this has a different twist.
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy. Rainstorm in the evening. Wordlessly, Bianca confronted Frankie on her deception about the locket and they spent an evening of desperate love making.
setting: Opal's house. Frankie's room. The late afternoon of the morning after.
Frankie slowly comes awake. She rubs at her eyes and trying to throw off the blankets she's tangled in she realizes that she is entwined with someone else. She looks over at Bianca's dark head rests against her back shoulder, there arms holding, their legs wrapped together under haphazard sheets.
Frankie looks down at the slumbering woman in wonder. A hand trembles as she reaches out to smooth back sweat laden hair but she stops herself. Shaking her head she disentangles herself.
"no." she shakes her head and starts putting clothes on hurriedly.
The movement woke Bianca. "What's going on?" She asks groggily.
"Nothing." Frankie states. "Absolutely nothing is happening. At all."
"Frankie," Bianca sits up in their bed. "What's wrong?"
"What's wrong?" Frankie repeats at least one octave higher than her usual tone." What's wrong is that this should never have happened! You should never have come over here! I told you to stay away!"
You were lying to me!" Bianca's own voice rose. "You do love me Frankie. Didn't last night prove that?"
"All it proved to me is that you need to get your ears checked. Stay away means far from me! Don't you get that?" Frankie throws clothes and stuff unseeing as she scrambles for her jacket and keys.
"You're not leaving." Bianca wraps the sheet around her standing.
"What does it look like? I told you before us strays have no manners at all." Frankie throws out sarcastically. "I'm getting out of town. I'm leaving for good since you don't understand clear, concise English! All you Pine Valley people are crazy, you know that? If I hadn't come here than one of this-" She stops herself, never once looking at Bianca throughout her whole tirade.
Bianca's shock turns quickly to upset fury. "Than none of what would have happened? None of me? Is that it?" She begins to find her own clothes in angry jerks. "Fine you know what Frankie? I'm fed up too. I'm fed up of chasing you. I'm sick and tired of being lied to. And more than anything..more than anything, I'm sick and tired of the people I love leaving me one way or the other."
Frankie hangs her head in shame. "Bianca, I never deserved what you gave me. Here." She takes of the locket and hands it back. "I was a jerk. I was more than a jerk for keeping that. I just wanted..."
"What Frankie? What?" Bianca snatches the locket. "You want to tell me more lies? Don't bother! I don't want to hear it! Who the Hell do you think you are telling me who and what I deserve. I know what's in my heart and it's for me to decide what to do about it. Not you, not my mother not anyone!" Hot tears scald her cheeks. "I thought you understood that about me but to do what you've been doing, to do what you're dong now...than you don't know me at all. "
She pauses and glares at Frankie demanding, "Were you always going to leave?"
"I never expected you." Frankie began.
"No Frankie! Yes or no, were you planning on leaving before right now?"
Frankie thought of her father and answered without explanation. "Yeah."
Bianca shakes her head, the anguish unbearable. "Than just go. " She sobbed. "Go and don't ever come back." She leaves, devastated and angry.
Frankie watches her go, overcome with helplessness. "Now," she breathes, "now you'll finally be safe." But her last words were broken sobs.
She grabs at the phone and dials.
***********************
<Erica's office>
"Chris I don't see what this has to do with anything or why I should listen to this woman." Erica motions at Vanessa,"for another moment!"
The phone rings. "Oh what is it now." She picks it up. Very quickly her face becomes one of extreme upset. "Who is this?"
"Frankie? What are you saying, calm down I can't understand you."
"What?" Rage colours Erica's tone. "You what! How dare you! How dare you insinuate yourself into my daughter's life and break her heart! You are a worthless creature unworthy of what my daughter has to give a human being! You're not even human! You stay away from my daughter. Do you understand me? Stay away from her or so help me I'll kill you! I could kill you right now!"
She hangs up. Overwhelmed. Chris goes to gather her in his arms."Erica, what's happened?"
She pushes his hands away. "That was your niece Vanessa," she tells them with venom. You wanted peace between us for the sake of my daughter and that, that snake!? You have some nerve coming here. That girl has just devastated my daughter! She is nothing but poison!"
"Why Erica really-" Vanessa begins.
"Save your breath." Erica cuts her off with a vicious tone. "Save it for someone who cares. I have to go find my daughter and save her from that monster you stuck on her." Erica flies out the door.
**************
Weeping openly now, Frankie grabs her bag and heads out. Leaving this place behind her.
Chapter 7s
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy. The morning after was filled with further angst adding to the growing rift between Bianca and Frankie. Frankie may have driven her away for good. Frankie called, distraught, to tell Erica to be there for Bianca. Erica did not take that news well and uttered a death threat unthinkingly, where Chris and Vanessa both heard her.
setting: Night, out on the street.
Erica is driving like a woman possessed. Her eyes scanning the area furtively. She sees her.
"Frankie." The name scalds her tongue.
Something else gives her cause to frown. "What is she running from? Who is that man?" She immediately assumes the worst. "Why that little snake! So she broke my baby's heart over some older man? I'll show her what happens when you hurt my daughter."
She quickly swerves her car to the side of the road and gets out. Walking over to a wreck of an old building.
"Why on earth would they have come here? But I'm sure this is where I saw them run into." She steadies her breath and checks her purse. Pulling out a handgun, she grips it reassuringly though awkwardly. "I'll make sure you pay for what you've done to Bianca."
She walks into the building, stepping around the debris and a large sign that says 'WARNING: BUILDING SET FOR DEMOLITION. HAZARDOUS. DO NOT TRESPASS.'
Chapter 7t
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy. The morning after was filled with further angst adding to the growing rift between Bianca and Frankie. Frankie may have driven her away for good. Frankie called, distraught, to tell Erica to be there for Bianca. Erica did not take that news well and uttered a death threat unthinkingly, where Chris and Vanessa both heard her.
setting: Night, out on the street.
Frankie kicked through the remains of the door and ran out onto the roof. She held her arms out, feeling the fresh breeze. Lumbering steps behind her made her turn to face her stalker.
"Dad." She stated sarcastically.
"What the Hell you think you're doing running from me like that?"
Calm, like in the eye of a storm, Frankie replies blithely, "After all these years of me doing exactly that, I thought you'd be used to it by now."
"Don't you dare smart mouth me!" Michael warns her, stepping closer.
"Or what? You'll hit me?" She meanders over to the edge of the roof and looks down. She whistles. "Long drop."
Neither of them notice Erica Kane creeping up the stairs and hiding behind the wall of the stair case, peering through a broken board and listening to them at this moment.
"Step away from that edge Mary-Francis." Michael tells her nervously.
"Oh, that's right," Frankie feigns innocence, "you never did like heights did you?"
"I mean it. Get away from there or else."
Frankie's inner storm begins to thunder and snarl. "Or else what? What do you think you could possibly do to me now? After everything I've been through, al you've already done, do you really think that hitting me matters anymore? Do you think I care?"
Michael frowns. "I don't know what you're going on about baby girl. But you did the right thing, getting that deviant away from you. Now you can come home and be with your family. Let your father take care of you." He holds out his hand. "Come on now, let daddy take you home. Where you belong."
In the cache, Erica mouths the word 'father?', her eyes widening.
Frankie bristles. "Don't you *ever* talk about Bianca. You're not good enough to lick her shoes! The only deviant is you! God! You come on to me and threaten to hurt Bianca like you want to hurt me and you think she's the evil person in all this? You must be insane. I wish to God you weren't my father, But you can't do anything now. She's safe from you I made sure of that.."
"How can you speak to me that way?" Michael sounds utterly sincere as he edges closer to her. "I'm your father. I love you."
"You sick twisted scum sucking son of a bitch." Frankie rages. "A father doesn't try to touch his daughter like that! A father doesn't disappear for months at a time only to stash mom up with even more drugs so that she's a useless zombie who can't take care of her own kid! Love!" She spits out the word. Tears in her eyes, her fists clenched as she gets the words out past her tightened throat. "You don't know what that is. But I do. Yeah dad, worthless me. Or so you and mom kept telling me. How no one could ever love a useless stupid ugly kid like me. Well someone does love me Michael. And not just anyone." The tears streak hotly from her eyes as her words scald, "Bianca. The most wonderful, amazing, kind, intelligent, together, beautiful woman..."she smiles sadly to herself for a moment " but the beautiful part's just a bonus.. She loves me. Or at least she did until I pushed her away to be safe from you. You took her away from me but you can't ever take away the love we shared. That, you can't ever touch.'
She steps up on the ledge of the building.
"That's how you show your gratitude!" Michael shouts at her. "You get down here right now. You're coming with me and you don't have one say about it!"
Frankie looks at him, both calm at what her choice is , and turbulent at facing off against the monster she's always feared. "I don't think so."
Michael pulls out a gun. "I do."
Frankie looks at the gun non-plussed. "You do what? Think? You could've fooled me."
"What are you going to do? Kill me?"
"No." He replies confidant as he levels the gun. "Ill just wound you. Than I'll drag you off to where you belong. With me."
"I don't think so." Replied another voice entirely. They both turn startled to see the fierce presence of Erica Kane, vibrating with anger. In low, barely controlled tones she motions with her gun, aimed directly at Michael. "Put that gun down and move away from that girl. Now."
Michael measures her diminutive form. "Like Hell."
"Erica.." Frankie is filled with a sudden fear. "Please, just go back to wherever you came from. You don't need to be involved with this. It has nothing to do with you. Bianca needs you now. You need to go to her."
"Don't presume to tell me what I need Frankie." Erica never takes her eyes off of the man. "You're her father? Is that true?"
"That's right." He keeps the gun on Frankie. "And my daughter was right when she told you this is none of your business. So get lost."
"On the contrary, if I heard correctly and I know I did. You threatened my daughter. And believe me, that makes it very much my business. I will kill you if you so much as approach her you vile man you."
Michael laughs. "Are you for real? I can do whatever I want-"
"Even to your own daughter?" Erica accuses, cutting him off, her own heart sickened by all she heard. "I may not like Frankie but at least she's not the loathsome creature you are Mr. Stone. And I am all to well acquainted with men like you, who'll harm a child, violate them. You're disgusting. Now get away from that girl, now." She moves closer to Frankie by the ledge.
"Who the Hell do you think you are woman!" His ire rising. "I can do whatever I please, do you understand me?"
"I understand your sort all to well. You're a monster. As for who I am, I'm the woman who's got away with murder before. I don't think a low life sleaze like yourself would be overly missed. Do you Mr. Stone?"
"I think you're crazy."
"Erica," Frankie pleads, "please, just go. You can't get hurt. It would tear Bianca apart to lose you too. Just..just tell her, there was only ever her for me. Please."
"You can't be serious Frankie! I'm not letting you leave with this monster."
"I'm not leaving with him. As a matter of fact, you don't have to worry about him."
"Really?" Sneers Michael, "And why is that?"
"Because, I sent a letter tonight by courier to the chief of police. Anna Duvane. She happens to be the wife of my cousin. And our family does like to be close to each other right *dad*?"
"What's in that letter girl?" His breathing increases with his rage.
"Only my statement of exactly everything you've said and done since you came to town. I made a special point of your threats to both Bianca and Erica. Anna'll slap an APB and throw you in the slammer faster than you can say indictment."
"How could you?" He rages.
The rickety ledge creeks under Frankie's feet."How could I not? Did you really think I wouldn't take steps to ensure you never get your filthy paws anywhere near Bianca or her mom? You better start running Michael. If you hurry maybe you can make it out of town before they find you."
Michael take sin everything she said, and the gun the little lady still had trained on him. "There's no way I'm being run out of town by a woman and a girl." He snarled.
"You're never going to touch me in any way again. I'll jump off this roof first." Frankie vows.
"Frankie no!" Erica says turning her eyes to her, "You can't take your own life! No matter how we feel about each other. Think of Bianca! It would kill her!"
"I already killed whatever love she felt for me." Frankie cried. "And I'm tired of running."
"I'll protect you." Erica takes one hand away from her pistol and holds it up to the young woman. "Please. Come down with me."
Unfortunately, that moment was distraction enough to allow Michael to rush them. Suddenly everything moved in slow motion. Frankie cried out jumping down to shield Erica but as Michael raised his gun, running toward them on the small roof, Tow shots rang out. The running and commotion proved too much for the rotted wood and degraded mortar. The roof gave way, and both Erica and Frankie cry out as the three of them fall.
As the dust clears, a hand is seen under the debris. over to the other side is the still forms of Erica and Frankie. Their faces grey with dust. Both unconscious.
Chapter 7u
note: thus far in Dichotomy, Vanessa hasn't yet been caught though the noose is tightening. Anna is already chief of police.
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy. Showdown b/t Frankie and Michael on the rooftop of a slated to be demolished building. She said she sent a letter to Anna to have her protect B and E. Erica had followed Frankie, overheard more than enough and intervened to protect Frankie..who seemed ready to take her own life by jumping off the building rather than have her father violate her. Also she feels worthless and blames herself deeply for the hurt she caused Bianca. In the end, Erica shot her gun twice when rushed by Michael. Then the roof collapsed and all three fell.
setting: Night, PV Hospital.
Bianca walks out of the ER with Jake, holding a hand gingerly against her bandaged forehead.
"Thanks again Jake, I feel like such an idiot."
"There's nothing to feel embarrassed about. You fell of your horse and gave your head a nasty gash on that rock. You just be careful next time. No night riding at Wildwind allright?" He said with warm affection.
"Alright." Her countenance saddens.
"Hey," Jake noticed," do you want to talk about why you were up there so late riding?"
Bianca exhales. "Not really, no offence. I just..still have some things to sort out."
"Okay," he hands a file over to a waiting nurse, "but if you ever need to talk. You know I'm here for you."
She offers a weak smile, "Thanks. I better call mom before-"
She's interrupted by a tornado of EMT's and nurses rushing in people on gurneys.
"Whoa," Jake grabs a nearby nurse," What's happened here?"
"Three people brought in from a collapsed building Dr. Martin. A man and two women. The man also has bullet wounds. We're losing him fast."
Jake moves in to help. Bianca looks on in shock before she recognizes the next figure brought in.
"Mom!"
She runs over to her mother. Erica has severe bruises showing on her arms as well as scrapes also on her scalp is a particularly nasty wound. She's unconscious and pale.
Bianca moves people aside to get to her. "Mom! Mom! Please can you hear me?" She starts crying. "You have to wake up. You just have to be okay!"
Jake takes hold of Bianca and firmly pries her away. "We have to look at her now Binca. Please just be patient. We'll find take care of her. I'll call you as soon as we know anything."
"But-"
Bianca's plea is unheard as the medical staff hurry her mother into the ER. A hand goes to her moth to keep from screaming. She sobs out the words,"Please, oh please God don't take her away from me too."
"Bianca?" Bianca turns to see David standing there concerned. "Bianca what is it?"
She falls into his arms weeping. "It's mom, she's hurt. I don't know how it happened or if she's going to be okay!"
He comforts her, rubbing her back gently. "We'll take care of it don't worry. Erica's a strong woman Bianca. The strongest. I'm sure she'll be fine."
In his arms, she never saw the form on the third gurney that was brought in right behind her mother's. Semi-conscious, Frankie heard and saw Bianca's devastation at the fear of losing her mother.
"Don't worry Biancala," she groggily vowed going in and out of consciousness, her voice so low no one heard. "I'll take care of it for you both."
"Doctor Hayward!" a strident nurse called him. "We have a third patient here. She seems to be suffering from internal bleeding, possible head trauma, we need your help."
He gently breaks his hug with Bianca. "I have to go see this patient now. You rest here. We'll tell you as soon as we know your mother's condition." He looks over at the gurney and his eyes widen. "Frankie?"
Bianca turns around and finally sees the third figure. "Oh no. I can't-" Her eyes flutter and she collapses. Luckily David was close enough to catch her. "Nurse!" He calls the woman over. "Take her to a private room. She's collapsed from the shock. Check her vitals and give her an IV if necessary."
He strides over to Frankie. "Hey cousin. You keep saying you don't need anyone buy it seems you keep needing help." He speaks in an affectionate soothing manner, hoping to not alarm her as he assesses her condition. He flashes the light in her eyes."How are you feeling?"
"Like a building fell on me." She joked feebly.
"Any pain?"
"My head a little, sore all over except.."she frowns concentrating. "David, why can't I feel my legs?"
David checks her legs. "Nothing appears to be broken maybe bruised. Can you feel this?" He pokes her leg with a pen.
"Are you doing something?" In her head brace she can't see his movements.
David grows increasingly concerned as a few more similar tests give the same result.
"Hey David?" The injuries are wearing on her already tenacious hold on consciousness. "I need to talk to Anna."
"That'll have to wait. I need to have some MRI's and X-rays done immediately to make sure you're alright."
"No I gotta-" her world goes dark.
David barks orders at his staff. "I need a full back x-rays done and an MRI of her head and neck! Now people!"
He takes a breath before following them in.
Chapter 7v
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy. Bianca had fallen off her horse but aside form a aching head was fine. Michael, Erica and Frankie were all brought in. Bianca only saw Erica at first and was terribly distressed at the thought of losing her mother. Maggie as well as Erica are getting a battery of tests done.
setting: PV Hospital. Later.
Erica wakes up to the sound of Dr. Joe Martin's voice.
"Joe?" she blinks rapidly at as her eyes adjust to the lights. "What's going on? Am I in the hospital?"
"Yes, indeed you are Erica. And might I say you are one very fortunate woman."
"I don't understand." She tries to sit up and winces, a hand going up to gingerly touch the back of her head.
"Easy now." He puts a hand to help her ease up. "You've got a nasty bump on the head. Aside from some a number of contusions and scrapes, you seem to have gotten away with only a concussion as the most serious of your injuries. We'll need to keep you overnight for observation reasons only. Standard hospital procedure."
"Now, if you feel up to a guest, I know your daughter is very anxious to see you."
"Of course bring her in. " She immediately responds.
"Doc Joe no sooner opens the door than Bianca flies in and is immediately by her mom's bedside. "Oh mom I was so scared you were hurt badly!" She breaks, sobbing in her mother's arms, overwhelmed by everything's that happened in the past twenty four hours.
"My dear Bianca," Erica asks fully distressed. What's going on? Joe said I'm perfectly fine..but what happened?" Taking a look at her daughter she notices the bandage on Bianca's forehead. "Were we in a car accident?"
Joe frowns slightly, coming closer. "Don't you remember what happened to you Erica?"
Erica tries but shakes her head. "I remember a phone call from that horrible Frankie person saying she hurt my Bianca. I immediately left the office to find you sweetheart. "She says directly to her daughter. "But after that, nothing. Were we in an accident? Well, we must have been. I found you and we were in a car accident Bianca?"
Bianca grows increasingly concerned. "No mom," she takes her mother's hand reassuringly, "you, some man, and Frankie were on a rooftop to some building scheduled for demolition. The roof caved in and you all fell." She regards her mother carefully. "You really don't remember any of this?"
"Bianca," Erica confesses clearly distressed. "I can't recall a single thing!"
"Joe?" Erica asks.
"I wouldn't worry about it too much Erica. Like I said, that was a nasty bump on your head. That and the trauma of the fall could have caused temporary amnesia." He gives them a comforting smile. "Just to be on the safe side I'm I'll have our best neurologist go over your MRI and CT results. Don't worry, I'm sure it's nothing serious."
"Thank you Joe." He departs.
"Oh mom I'm so glad you're okay." Bianca hugs her again, mindful of how sore she must be.
Erica hugs her back, delighted to have her daughter close to her again. "Oh,my precious, you don't have to be so worried, I'll never leave you."
*****************
In the foyer of the hospital, Jack stands talking to a police officer. Anna enters and approaches him.
"Jack, How are you holding up? Are Erica and Bianca alright?"
"Last I heard Erica got off very lucky. A bump on that hard head of hers. Thank God she's alright. And Frankie?"
"I don't know. I've had to be at the crime scene but David called me. I feel confident with him looking after her." She exhales.
"You think of her like a daughter don't you?" Jack asks compassionately.
"I suppose I do. We spent so much time together. Time I never had the chance to share with Robin." She shakes it off as best she can. "Can we get down to business? This touchy feely stuff coming from you, no offence Jack, it's just weirding me out a little. And I want to get this over with so I can check in on her condition."
"Absolutely. It's been a long night for all of us. Now did I hear you correctly when you said crime scene? So this wasn't an accident?"
"Well, the roof collapsing was but the two bullet holes in the unidentified man weren't."
Jack's eyes widen. "Bullet holes?"
She nods and holds out an evidence bag. "Two guns were found at the scene. One was never fired. This one was. Does it look familiar to you ?"
Jack frowns, taking the bag. "Now why would you think-" he breaks off as recognition dawns, "It's my brother's gun. The one he left with Erica for protection."
"Your late brother's name was what we pulled off the computer when we ran the serial number."
"Do you know who the man is?"
"Not yet know, but we will." She hesitates and then tells him matter of fact. "Jack, the man in the morgue didn't die in the fall. The coroner already confirmed that he was dead before he landed, from the bullet wounds."
Jack exhales slowly. "So we're talking self-defence." He pauses feeling the full weight of the possible outcome. "Or murder."
"Yes," she says not unkindly, "which is why I need to talk with Erica as soon as possible. Because I'm hoping her testimony will make it self-defence. Bianca doesn't need to lose anyone else."
"What are you talking about? Who else has Bianca lost recently?" Jack asks very concerned.
"Didn't you know? Frankie and Bianca split up. It's been painful for both of them."
"I didn't know."
"The course of true love never did run smooth." Anna states. "I'd better go see if I can question Erica."
"I'm afraid that's not possible." Joe Martin says, having overheard her last sentence while walking up to them.
"What do you mean Joe?" They both ask.
"I just got back from Neurology. The results aren't good for Erica. It seems she has complete amnesia of the events of this past night. The specialist said .." he pauses.
"Said what Joe?" Jack demands.
Reluctantly he tells them the bad news. "Erica may never regain her memory of that night. Not ever."
********************
David speaks gently to Frankie at her bedside. "Please Frankie, I've already had to turn Bianca away three times. Why won't you let her see you? Don't you think it would help if you had her hear?"
Frankie shakes her head. "No, I don't want her to see me like this. Quit asking me okay?"
"Okay." he sits next to her on the bed. "I have some very serious news for you. Do you think you're ready to hear it?"
"It's about my legs isn't it?" Frankie clutches the blanket tighter.
"Yes it is." He waits for her answer.
"Alright, hit me with it."
"The bullet fragment from your wound a few months back, do you remember it?"
Frankie snorts. "I think I remember getting shot, yeah."
"Well, the fragment moved. We think it happened during the fall. With the severe wrenching combined with the impact of the fall and internal bleeding, it helped the fragment move down away form your heart."
"That's a good thing isn't it?" Frankie ventured fearfully.
"That part yes." He takes her hand. "It's not uncommon for a fragment in the body to move about naturally, but the fall made it move more so than anyone could have anticipated. It's now resting against a tender area of your spine. Right up against some very important nerves."
Frankie pales. "So that's why I can't feel my legs?" At David's nod she continues. "You can just operate and take it out can't you?"
David turns sad eyes upon her. "I'm afraid not Frankie. It's at an area that we can't operate because the risk of severing your spinal column in the process is too high."
"So what are you saying?" She struggles to breathe.
"I don't want you to give up hope now. We have some of the best in physio therapy and there's a small chance, a very small chance, that the fragment may move away from your spine gradually."
Frankie measures him warily. "I hear a but."
"But," he adds with all the compassion his heart can give, "there's also a chance it might move and cause more damage to your spinal cord."
"So what are you saying?"
"I'm telling you that you're paralysed from the waist down Frankie. And that it most likely may be permanent."
"Do you want me to send for anyone?" He asks after a moment of silence.
In a very still voice she asks, "How's Bianca's mom?"
"Erica's fine. Only thing she has is a bump on the head and some minor amnesia."
"Amnesia?" She asks still in that quiet voice.
"Nothing serious." He's quick to reassure her. "She just can't remember how she fell, or being on the roof top at all. I have to admit I'd like to hear what you were doing up there." He mentions, trying to draw her out.
She remains silent.
He gets up. "I'm sorry but I have to go see to some other patients but I'll be back as soon as I can.If you need anything you ring the nurse and tell them to get me alright?"
She nods barely, once.
He has his hand on the handle when her voice reaches him.
"Can you send in the Chief of Police?"
"Anna?" He turns back to her, "Of course I'll send her in. Hold on."
As the door closes Frankie stares blankly. "Don't worry Bianca. I'll make sure no one takes your mother away from you."
Anna walks in. "Frankie, how are you?"
Frankie looks up at her. "I have a confession to make..."
Chapter 7w
special thanks: To Michelle who found the lyrics I needed, and to everyone else who tried. Thank you. You'll see them in 7x (final chapter to 7). Honest,;)
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: Erica has amnesia. Frankie is paralysed and was making a confession to Anna...
setting: PV Hospital. Some time later.
Anna rechecks the paperwork as she walks back to Frankie's room. An officer stops her.
"Pardon me Chief, but this was sent to you via courier." The man in uniform holds out the envelope. "Thought it might be important what with being rushed, so I brought it here in case you needed it."
"A slight frown graced Anna's features. "I'm not expecting anything important. I'm in the middle of something pressing right now so just leave it on my desk. I appreciate you running it over though. Thanks."
"Sure thing Chief." The officer takes off with the envelope.
Anna walks into Frankie's room, closing the door behind her. "I have your statement all typed up.IT just needs your signature."
Frankie listlessly holds out her hand. "Sure. Let's get this over with."
Anna pauses by the bed. "Are you certain you've told me everything that's happened?"
"Nothing else to tell." Frankie replies easily. "I'm getting kind of tired though so is it okay if we finish this up?"
"I'm sorry." Frankie looks puzzled at her, Anna nods towards Frankie's legs. "It must be so hard going through what you're suffering right now...this is the last thing you need. Would you like me to get Bianca for you?"
Strained Frankie begs her off. "Aw Anna, look, things just didn't work out alright? Happens all the time. Right now it's the least of my worries. I'm just not into any heavy heart to heart right now. I've got a lot on my mind and I'm really exhausted. David told me I need lots of rest so I can recover best I can to tackle physio later down the road."
"Of course, of course, " Anna relents, handing over the papers.
Frankie signs them and hands them back.
Anna pauses again. "You know, if there's anything you need Frankie, anything at all that I can do, don't hesitate to contact me. Do you understand?"
Frankie feels like she's about to cry. She holds it together though, and if her voice broke a little on her next words, Anna was sensitive enough not to mention it. "Yeah, I got it. Thanks Anna. Really, I mean it."
Anna takes her hands giving it a warm squeeze and Frankie a gentle smile. "I'll be checking in on you later. count on it."
She leaves.

Erica's hospital room.
Erica stares at Jack appalled. "Are you telling me some man is dead, with the gun my husband gave me? "
"I can't believe it. Mom wouldn't shoot someone for no reason." Bianca stated firmly.
"I know that." jack strives to sound reassuring. "But a man is dead and from all the evidence it is from you gun Erica. But you don't have to worry-"
"I can't go to jail! I refuse to go to jail for some crime I didn't commit! I'm being framed!" Erica exclaims.
Jack takes a deep breath before continuing. "As I was saying before you interrupted me, you don't have to worry about being charged Erica. We have a statement from Frankie. She says she shot your gun."
"What?" Erica says.
"Frankie?" Bianca says in complete disbelief.
"We know from that earlier incident with Seth that she can and will use a gun. The questions I have are why? And what you were doing up there with her. Let alone how did she get a hold of your gun?" Jackson pursues.
"I have no idea." Erica huffs. "I can't remember anything at all Jack. You know that."
"And I am sorry you were hurt." Her embraces her. "I can't tell you how relieved I am that you're alright."
Bianca is deeply adrift. "How do you know she shot him uncle Jack?"
Gently he told her the truth. "Anna's with her taking her statement. She confessed to it almost right away..even after the terrible news that poor kid got."
Bianca stands up from her perch on her mother's bed. "What do you mean uncle Jack?" What's happened to Frankie"
Surprised, his eyebrows raise. "You mean to say you hadn't heard?"
Bianca felt like she could scream."Heard what?"
"It's Frankie, Bianca, she's paralysed."
Anguish overtakes her features and without another word, Bianca rushes out of the room.

Chapter 7x
note: The song "Thousand Kisses" is by Wild Strawberries. I have no claim, make no profit, etc. I own little and certainly not this song. I do however love it and Wild Strawberries and recommend a listen at your local CD store or radio if you're so inclined. Lyrics marked with * at start and end.
Last time on Alt AMC's Dichotomy: Frankie confessed to the shooting. Erica and Bianca found out, as well as discovering Frankie's status. Bianca has dashed from her mother's bedside.....
setting: PV Hospital.
Frankie sits alone in her hospital bed.
"Please, please let this work. Than maybe, someway, this'll be worth it." She prays.
Bianca comes barging in. She stops dead ion her tracks at the sight of Frankie, pale, her legs unmoving even as the woman in question straightens up her upper body. "Bianca? Get the out of here."
*So I'm clever now
Yeah I'm clever like a thief
So I've made it now
Yeah I made it by my teeth
All I really want is missing*
Bianca didn't even hear the words. "My God, Frankie. Why didn't you tell me?"
"Tell you what?" Frankie throws out accusingly. "I've said everything I had to say already. Now leave. Go!"
Bianca shakes her head. "I don't understand. Why you keep throwing us apart when we belong together."
Some of Frankie's frustration and despair over her plight fire out of her. "So you can take care of a cripple Bianca? I always knew you had this whole knight in shining armour complex. Always you had to go take care of someone: Sarah, Laura the psycho with the sordid past, oh yeah and homeless little Rain. Well do forgive me if I don't add myself to your list of charity cases!"
*Maybe I could send you a thousand kisses
Maybe if I gave you my heart in pieces
I could never let you know*
Confused but offended, Bianca steps closer. "You think I care about that?" Tears shine in her eyes. "Did you really think I would love you less or differently if you had lost an arm, or your sight? You can't walk...we'll get through it! It's your heart I care about. It's who you are that I love, and yes I love what you are too. Even though it's really hard to like you right now when you say such hateful things trying to push me away.I'm not stupid Frankie. I know you." She puts a hand on Frankie who flinches at the gentle touch but doesn't shrug her off. "I love you. And I know you love me."
*Maybe if I told you in every language
Maybe if I wrote it on every corner
I could never let you go*
Frankie wavers, her composure cracking. "How's your mom?"
Relieved at the opening, Bianca says smiling, "She's going to be okay. A concussion and some amnesia but.."
"What?" Frankie wonders at the pause but she guesses why.
*Maybe I'm loaded now
Yeah I'm loaded cuz I cheat
Maybe I'm with pretty now
Yeah she's so pretty and discreet
Who'd have thought I'd come to nothing*
"I'm just so grateful she's okay. That you're both alive. After losing my father, and friends, or people who didn't turn out to be such good friends...I just don't know what I'd do if I lost her."
"Yeah," Frankie says quietly,"you loved your dad a lot. It's be bad if something took your mom away from you."
*Maybe I could send you a thousand kisses
Maybe if I gave you my heart in pieces
I could never let you know*
Bianca is looking down so doesn't see the earnestness in Frankie's gaze at the moment. "Yeah, I don't think I could take it. Guess I'm not as strong as I thought."
"You're stronger than most anyone I know. You should be with your mom now. After everything's that happened I bet she needs you near. And you need to be with her right now. You should go."
Bianca's brows lower. "I should be here with you."
Frankie takes a deep breath and tries a new angle. "Look Bianca, I ...appreciate you wanting to be a good friend to me even after us breaking up. That can't be easy but then again you were always the good side of the two of us."
Bianca pulls back."What are you saying?"
"What I've been trying to tell you all along. We're through. There is no us. It's over. You have to accept that. Go on with your life. Be with your mother, she needs you. I don't."
Yelling, more harsh words, Bianca was prepared for but this calm side of Frankie baffles her. "I don't believe that."
"You don't now. You've been through a lot." Frankie states it all in a dead voice." But you will. In time you'll accept that it's over between us."
*Maybe I could send you a thousand kisses
Maybe if I gave you my heart in pieces
I could never let you know*
"But..your legs." Bianca flounders.
"Will heal or not. It's not your concern."
Bianca looks at Frankie, than before the other woman can react she lunges at her. In one deft move she takes Frankie lips with her own and kisses her hard and demandingly.
*Maybe if I told you in every language
Maybe if I wrote it on every corner
I could never let you go*
After a moment she pulls back, both are breathing hard. She steps away from Frankie. "You can lie all you want but that was the truth. The way you kiss me back. You're wrong Frankie. You say it's not my concern, that it's over between us....you are my concern, you're my heart, and I'm yours. And it will never be over between us.." Bianca gives her one last determined look before leaving.
Frankie's tares after her, both healed and agonized by Bianca's words. Her hand strays to the lips that Bianca so recently kissed and still burn. Tortured, still she remains firm in her resolve. She picks up the phone beside her bed and dials.
*In another town there's no meaning for weak
In another place there's no word for defeat
All I really want is missing*
"Hey, yeah it's me. I need your help."
