Come Chat With Your Fellow Merpups

The Cabin Pups

Howdy there! Welcome to the Cabin. Feel free to come on in, take a seat on the couch, and make yourself comfortable. (Don't ya just LOVE leather?) This little page was designed to give pups who haven't met the cabin pups a chance to learn a bit about the room, and the creatures that inhabit it.

Merpupspack @ talkcity was created a few days after the great message board crash of '98. We have now moved to Dalnet due to talkcity's new policy's concerning the use of IRC clients. Like many of the other methods of pack communication, this room has developed into a unique environment. So, feel free to peruse these pages, and then come join the fun. Just bring your imagination and some clean towels. (things tend to get a little messy sometimes)

Room Rules

Well, there really are no rules, except of course "Be NICE". Pretty much anything goes in this room, but please keep in mind that if somebody asks you to stop, then stop. If you are taking things to far one of the channel operators may ask you to calm it down, if you fail to do so, they may kick you out of the room. Just be aware that the ops have the right to do this.

Chatting 101:

There are two way's to reach the Merpupspack room on dalnet. You can use the web to reach the room or you can use something called IRC which stands for Internet Relay Chat. Most of the Cabin pups use mIRC (a version of IRC) because web based IRC tends to be alot slower and disconnect more frequently.

If you aren't familiar with IRC clients the web based one may be a good place to start. You can reach Dalnet's web based client by going to their website When you log onto the client simply type /join #merpupspack to come to the cabin.

If you are using an IRC client such as mIRC (the preference of most pups with PCs) or other clients for other platforms, the process to get to the cabin is pretty much the same. before connecting select from the list the server as Dalnet and select either a particular Dalnet server in your local area or a random server. Once connected to Dalnet you can use the same command as the web based version to get to the room, or (if your client supports it) use the join channel option from the commands drop down menu at the top of the screen.

Emoticons:

Your going to see a lot of these things while you are chatting. They are one of the few ways to show how a particular comment is being made. If you are making a joke or teasing someone, it is a good idea to include a :) so that you comments are not taken the wrong way.

Performing Actions:

mIRC has a neat little trick which allows you to perform actions on somebody else (get your head out of the gutter)

All you have to do is type: /me then whatever you want to do. Whoever's name you have highlighted will then receive the action.

So, if I type /me slaps Xena upside the head with a large, smelly, wet trout.

Then Xena will get slapped upside the head, and I'll be running for the exit, never to be seen again.

There's a couple of other neat little tricks that are capable when using the mIRC client. They are known as "popups" and the possibilities with these things are limitless. Now, we have a few reigning Popup Queens who really, really like to use these things. So if you have mIRC it's a good idea to get a library of them to defend yourself.

Channel Operators

The channel operators in this room (known as "ops" for short) are there to keep order and enforce the room rules when necessary. Mostly they are just there to prevent non-pups from coming in and causing trouble. If you are in the room using mIRC the ops will be the pups with the little @ beside their names. (this symbol is also referred to as a "cape") If you have any questions or problems, feel free to ask them. If someone is causing trouble and you don't feel it's your place to say anything, get an op to do it. It's what they are there for.

There are currently seven channel operators for this room. Sometimes all will be in the room, sometimes none. If you are in the room and there is no op present and you run into problems, you can try to track down an op by using ICQ, the Merwolfpack mailing list, or by emailing one of the ops personally. The ops are marked on the meet the TC pups page. (link below)

For Tech support you may call on any of The Cabin Pups. They are all pretty knowledgeable about mIRC and chatting in general and are happy to help you out.

The 5 Dinar Tour

As you can see from this blueprint, there's quite a lot going on in this little room. The only limits are the ones on your imagination. I warn you to be prepared in this room, because you never know what's going to happen next.

A couple of Things that may come up in the room, that may leave the new pup a bit confused:

Virgin Hunts: A method we devised for appeasing the IRC gods when they appear to be mad at us. If your having trouble connecting to the room, your computer is misbehaving, or you keep getting dumped from the room, just say the word and we will organize a virgin hunt.

Trapdoors: A long time ago during the construction of this room, one of the pups decided to include several trapdoors to aid in quick escapes from tight situations. The doors have been there ever since and no matter how many times we try to seal them over, they just reappear. So, if you happen to step on one of these, you'll be booted from the room and will have to reconnect. Just come on back, dust yourself off, and hide the trap under the bear rug.

Jello Wrestling: The bonding activity of choice for the Cabin pups. Also a great way to get back at someone. These matches can break out at anytime, so don't wear your good clothes while chatting.

Open Mic Night: One of our special events. We invite some bards in to share poems/stories and get to spend the night basking in their talent. You never know who is going to show up at these things;)
