Sonny & Carly Prequel "The Beginning" January 20 - August 16, 1999: 4 hour original edit

First section covers January 20 - February 10, 1999
Jason is on the phone with an attorney when Sonny walks in. He wants to find out if there is any way to stop AJ from fighting for custody. Sonny cautions Jason not to let the pain lead him or he will make mistakes. Jason says that it isn’t like that. When someone betrays you, it is like half of you dies. You can't go back and undo it, you just have to protect what you have left. Sonny explains that Robin called and that she is leaving today. Sonny is going to go meet her to say goodbye.

Carly comes running down the stairs frantically demanding to know where Michael is? Jason calmly assures Carly that Michael is fine. He is with Letitia. Carly is still concerned. What if AJ shows up with custody papers. Jason assures her that AJ has no proof but Robin's word. Sonny looks disgusted as Carly insists that Robin is a snake and would do anything to take Michael away from them.

Jason tells Carly that they are in for a long fight and not to panic. Carly tells Jason that if he would never had told Robin the truth, they wouldn't be in this situation. Sonny interrupts and tells Carly that if she doesn't like the situation, she shouldn't have created it. He asks Jason if there is anything he wants him to tell Robin. Jason says no and Sonny leaves to meet Robin to say goodbye.

After Sonny goes, Carly starts to say more mean things about Robin, but Jason stops her. He says that it doesn't matter why Robin did it. Jason assures Carly that he isn't going to let AJ take Michael. Carly asks what they do now. Jason says that they meet with the  lawyers. They aren't going to lose Michael. One way or another, Michael will stay with them.

Jason walks in while Tony and Carly are talking and asks Tony why he is there. Tony says that Carly can fill him in on the details of his visit. Jason says that there are certain situations he left unresolved for Robin's sake. He can finish them now. He tells Tony not to come there again. After Tony goes, Jason asks Carly if this is about the day in the park or if Tony has something else on her. He doesn't have time for Carly to lie to him, he needs to know what to do about Tony.

Carly finally "fesses up" about when she left Michael alone in the swing and Tony found him. Carly is afraid that the Q's can use that against her. Jason points out that Carly shot Tony which is a lot  worse than walking ten feet away from a baby in a swing. Carly asks what the lawyer said. Jason says that the courts generally want a child with their mother, but that they have a fight ahead of them. From now on, there are two rules. Don't do anything stupid and if she does, don't lie about it, tell him right away so he can fix it.

Carly hugs Jason and apologizes for lying about the park. Jason says that he knows she will continue to lie, but cautions her not to lie about Michael. Carly tells Jason that the best thing she ever did for Michael was to give him Jason as a father. She would never do anything to screw that up. She goes upstairs to play with Michael just as Sonny comes home. Jason tells him that the lawyer thinks they have a strong case. Jason tells Sonny that the lawyer also told him that if Michael were two, there would be no way that AJ could challenge the legal father. Even if the biological father can prove a relationship, it wouldn't matter in court.

If Robin would have waited one more year, Michael would have been safe from AJ. Sonny says that he  never thought Robin would betray Jason. He would have bet his life on it. Jason says that he bet Michael's. Maybe not his life, but his happiness and his future. Sonny nods in silent agreement.

Sonny and Carly are at the penthouse together. Carly compliments Sonny on the apartment and asks who decorated it. Sonny rudely tells her that it was his dead wife. Carly looks uncomfortable, but says that she did a really good job. Carly says that Robin couldn't stand it. She couldn't wait to  get to that tacky little cottage. Carly starts to say derogatory things about Robin, but Sonny stops her. He tells her that Robin is gone and there is no reason to discuss her. Carly insists that Robin betrayed Jason in the worst way  she could. Sonny says that Robin made a bad choice. Carly is shocked that Sonny sees what Robin did as a bad choice.

Sonny says that Jason has to live with what Robin did. There is no need for him to keep hearing about it. Carly thinks that Robin asked Sonny to try and fix things with Jason. Carly says that she won't let Sonny work Jason for Robin. She will tell Jason to stop seeing Sonny for Michael's sake if she has to. Sonny agrees that that might work, but it might not. Carly  tells Sonny to do himself a favor and not make Jason choose. Robin did and look how that turned out. They both know that Jason loves Sonny like a brother. Jason doesn't want to go against Sonny, but what Robin did was unforgiveable. Sonny insists that Jason won't forgive Robin. He will never see her the same.

He will never open himself up to that kind of betrayal. Losing Robin didn't make Jason stupid. Sonny tells Carly that she is transparent as glass. If he can see it, so can Jason. Carly isn't going to tell Sonny what to do about Jason anymore than Sonny is going to tell Jason what to do about Carly. Although he does have some ideas. Carly suggests that Sonny be nice to her because Jason loves Michael more than anything and she and Michael are a package deal.

Jason returns and tells Sonny about some warehouses on the docks for them to house the new legal venture that they are doing to make themselves look legitimate.

Carly told Bobbie about Jason covering when AJ asked if he was Michael’s father. When Jason and Sonny return, Bobbie wished Jason good luck in the matter. Jason was a bit peeved that Carly spilled the beans to Bobbie in the first place. Sonny warned Jason that Carly could be the reason he might lose custody of Michael in the  end and he might as well just take Michael to the Quartermaine’s now.

A.J. shows up at Sonny’s and gives Jason a court order demanding Jason and Michael to get a blood test to establish whether he is the father. Sonny looks on as AJ warns him that he only has 48 hours. Sonny has AJ escorted out. Carly comes in raving about the dining room set she has picked out, and the bed she found. After Sonny leaves the room, Jason tells Carly about AJ’s visit. She freaks out and says that they either run or let them take their son. Jason warns Carly not to panic and do  something stupid because that would be what the Q's want.

Sonny and Jason talk about the coffee warehouse as Carly walks in. Sonny says Mike is recommending Kona who is now a coffee bean authority. Jason wants to keep the tip which surprises Sonny. He warns Jason that if he wants to take Mike’s advice, he is going to have to deal with the face he makes when Jason doesn’t take his advice. Sonny tells Jason that Enrique called and he has to go out there. Jason suggests that he maybe he should go? Jason starts to mention the Quartermaines and Carly interrupts before he can continue and declares that is their business and why is he telling Sonny.

Jason sternly warns her to NEVER tell him what he can discuss with Sonny. He owes Sonny his life and if Carly crosses Sonny that he will not protect her. She interrupts declaring she wasn’t trying to cross him. Jason firmly tells her no excuses or explanations and to not do that again. Carly is uncharacteristically silent as Jason continues. Jason fills Sonny in that AJ showed up an affidavit from Carly’s psychiatrist releasing her against his orders and that she is not fit to be out in society. Sonny does not appear surprised. Jason says legally it doesn’t mean anything as Jason’s judge released Carly on time served after she was declared fit to stand trial.

Sonny asks what is the problem? Jason admits that Carly is panicking as she doesn’t want to go back to Ferncliff. She cries that she shot someone and was in a mental institution. She points out that they are criminals and against them, AJ will look like father of the year with the Quartermaine resources. Sonny asks if Jason wants to run and Jason admits that he is thinking about it. Sonny warns him if he takes Carly to the safe house that then they can’t use it anymore. Sonny asks when he is planning on leaving but Jason isn’t sure yet. Jason offers if the situation down there is urgent he could go sooner. Sonny shares that Enrique did sound rather nervous.

Carly is standing off to the side drying her tears. When Jason turns towards her, she cries that she is sorry. He holds up his hand not wanting to hear it. He tells her that they have both made their choices and this is where it got them. They just have to decide what to do next. She observes that he doesn’t want to run, but he argues that she does and so they will go.

Carly writes a goodbye letter to Bobbie as she cries thinking of leaving her mother. Sonny comes in and then AJ arrives with another court ordered paternity test for Jason and Michael and this time warns her that Jason has 24 hours to comply. After AJ leaves, Sonny tells her they should wait a few minutes and then leave for the airport. While Sonny is out of the room, Carly calls Bobbie (who she has recently bonded with) and tells her she can have lunch tomorrow. When Sonny returns, he asks her if she is ready to go. She says she can’t go. She tells him how upset Bobbie is and she has to see her. She points out what difference is 24 hours going to make. After an annoyed Sonny leaves the room, she wads up the goodbye letter she wrote to Bobbie.

AJ decides it's time to put another nail in the coffin and calls Carly to remind her that time is running out for the paternity test. Carly's freaking out and yelling at the movers when her new furniture arrives. Sonny comes in and asks her if something is wrong? She complains about the movers scratching her desk. He asks what does it matter since she is leaving? He suggests that she chill. He then questions what time is her lunch with Bobbie? The reason she waited another day to leave? She cries that Bobbie was called into surgery, ruining the last day they could spend together. She wants to know why he is in her living room interrogating her and suggests that he leave. He retorts, “Gladly!"

A tearful Carly arrives at the Quartermaine mansion saying that Jason kidnapped Michael. Carly told Edward and AJ about how Jason "kidnapped" Michael. AJ doesn't buy it. Taggart answers the call for the report of a missing child. When he walks in, AJ informs him that Michael is his son, not Jason. Carly shakily tells Taggert that Jason Morgan kidnapped her son. Emily overhears as she comes downstairs and yells out, “LIAR!”

Sonny and Mike talk about Carly. Sonny is in a foul mood as they don’t know where Carly is. He fears there is a train wreck coming and he doesn’t know where the emergency brake is! Taggart comes by with a warrant to search Sonny's for evidence in the kidnapping of Michael. Sonny looks stunned at Carly’s accusation. Carly has pressed charges against Jason. Sonny is furious that Carly would accuse Jason of kidnapping.

February 10 - March 22, 1999: 1:03
Carly tries to make excuses to AJ that the only reason she sent him away was she was afraid. She tries to say that Jason was controlling over where she could go and what she could say. She didn’t dare argue with him as Jason would go off and start screaming and yelling. After awhile, Jason wasn’t Michael’s father he was her captor. Her and Michael were prisoners of fear. AJ assures her that she is safe there and he promises that they will get Michael back!

She turns around and finds Sonny in her room lurking, and not looking too happy. He asks, “What is the matter cupcake? Did you really think you could pull this off without me hearing about it?” Carly threatens to call the Q's in to throw Sonny out. He invites her to go ahead, that he would consider it a pleasure to enlighten the Q’s as to the scam she is running. Carly demands to know how she got in here? He declares he has as much right to be there as she does. Carly asks where is Jason? Did he give Sonny a key? She then demands to know if Jason is back in town? He observes that she doesn’t know what to wish for.

He continues that when Jason told him about Carly doing stupid things that he was taking his talent for understatements to a new height. “If he were back, what would he want with you?” Sonny questions. Carly says that Jason knows her, he would know that things are not what they seem. Sonny wants to know how long does she think she is going to last in this bad romance novel? H Sonny wants to know how long after acquiring Michael would it take before the Q's lock her up? Carly continues to believe that they can't keep Michael without Michael's mother. Sonny tells Carly that when Jason finds out what she's done, he will never come back. Jason wouldn't do that to her, Carly insists. Sonny tells her that she'd better figure out what she's going to do once the Q's throw her out. Sonny leaves.

Carly shows up after the guards walk away from the penthouse, and uses her key to enter. She searches for a number to use to reach Jason. She finds a cell phone and presses redial hoping to reach Jason. Suddenly Sonny enters and finds her there. He tells Carly that if she hits redial, she will get Benny on the other end. Carly tells Sonny that she needs to get a hold of Jason but Sonny tells her that if he has his way, she will never talk to Jason again. Carly tries to make good with Sonny. She backtracks, trying to work Sonny, but by the look on his face, he doesn't believe her tale of sibling rivalry. Sonny tells Carly that he insight of what makes A.J. tick is of no interest to him. He tells her that what does interest him is that his best friend is being double-crossed by a garden variety tramp!

Carly is ticked off. She says that there is no reason to insult her. She says that her plan is to get A.J. on her side, the rest of the Q's will follow and when they trust her with Michael she'll decide who will see Michael and that it will be, of course, Jason. Sonny tells Carly that her crap doesn't work with him after she says that in order to make her plan work she has to make Jason look bad. They continue to fight and it looks as though Sonny is winning, but she gives a low blow concerning his love for Robin and he gives Carly a look that could kill. Sonny tells Carly that Jason chose Michael over her. She snaps back by telling him he's just like Robin. She refers to Robin as a tramp and suggests that he and Robin were doing something in the back room.

She says that Jason chose her and she'll find him with or without his help. Either way she'll find Jason and he'll believe her. Sonny tells Johnny to get the car and get Carly out, never mind the snow. Carly and Sonny are stuck together during the storm and the tension is bad. She suggests that they work together to come up with something so that everybody wins. The best thing for her to do, she says, was for her to go to the Q's. She wants to call Jason and let her explain everything to Jason herself. Sonny's hesitant, to say the least. He asks her how Jason won't go to jail for the kidnapping. Carly comes back by saying that she has to be the one to press charges, but she won't. He humors her and lets her believe that he's in accord with her.

Then with something naughty on his mind, he suggests that they go upstairs. He leads her on, then calls her out. She denies that she would have slept with him, but he says she had that yes look. He calls her a slut and she retorts that he is a pig. He tells her that he'll tell Jason that she tried to seduce him to get him in her corner. What will hurt him the most, that she tried to seduce him or that she turned his son over to the Q's. He leaves her there hysterically crying and screaming that Jason won't believe him. Sonny tells the guard not to let her leave for three hours and then take her wherever she wants to go.

Jason arrived at the Q mansion to a smiling Carly. Carly is ecstatic to see Jason, but he pushes her away when she tries to hug him. Carly does a complete 180 when she notices AJ walking by and starts yelling at Jason demanding to know where her baby is. He can't just run off with her son. He is her son, not Jason's.  AJ insists that Jason get away from Carly. He asks if it finally dawned on Jason that people get arrested for kidnapping. Jason said that he didn't kidnap anyone. He and Michael went out of town for a couple of days. It's called a vacation. AJ says that Carly admitted the truth and demands to know where Michael is. When Jason refuses to answer, AJ leaves to call the police.

Taggert arrives commenting on the return of the baby snatcher. Taggert warns that Jason has been custodial parent since the child was born and kidnapping in this case can be very hard to prove. Jason explains that he and Michael took a trip and now they are back. Carly made a mistake. Carly is reluctant to confirm or deny. AJ shows Taggert the blood test and Jason rips it up and declares there will never be a blood test, EVER! AJ asks Jason if he thinks they are bluffing. Jason says that he isn't letting anyone stick Michael with needles to prove something everyone already knows. Jason admits that AJ is Michael's biological father.

Carly shows up at the penthouse. Before she can go into Jason's, Sonny intercepts her. They exchange heated words. Sonny asks her what she's peddling today, honesty? Carly fires back about being honest with Jason about Sonny propositioning her! Right then Jason opens the door. She tells Jason it's true, but Jason cuts her off. They go into the penthouse. He asks her if she is going to double cross him again like Sonny says. Jason wonders what could they possibly win by telling everyone he steals babies. Carly continues to tell Jason what she did is for the best. She is only pretending to be on the Q's side. Since Jason is legally Michael's father he can't be charged with kidnapping. She says she knew this all along. She didn't.

Jason tells her it doesn't matter what she does because Michael will still end up at the mansion. He will take Michael and leave before he allows that to happen. She blames this attitude on Sonny. She realizes this is what Sonny wanted him to do, to take her son and never come back. She declares Jason will never take her son from her. She drops the bomb, she will have to marry A.J. before she can be with Jason and Michael and they can be together as a family. Jason looks at her in shock.

Carly goes to Jason's penthouse to see Michael but is irked to find only Sonny in residence. Sonny informs her that Michael is at the park with his father. The two of them argue and Sonny warns Carly she's made an enemy for life in him. Jason and Leticia return with Michael and Carly immediately tells Jason that Sonny just threatened her. Jason tells Carly he doesn’t want to hear it and gives Michael to Leticia to take upstairs.

Carly tries to explain, but Jason cuts her off and tells her that she is not going to be able to turn him against Sonny. He then tells her that she hates Sonny and Sonny hates her and if they want to fight and argue that’s their business, but he is not going to be in the middle of it. Carly then reiterated to Jason the importance of following her plan. Sonny makes a off the wall comment and Carly yells at him to stay the hell out of her business. Sonny leaves and tells Jason he’ll see him at their meeting later on.

At the warehouse, Sonny and Jason are angry because the warehouse and everything in it has been totally destroyed. Nothing was saved. Not one pound of beans, not one file cabinet. Taggert walks up saying that it looks like someone was trying to send the new businessmen a message. Moreno maybe? Sonny says that he has been out of town. He hasn't kept up on these things. Taggert says that Sonny being back in town is what made Moreno nervous. Taggert says that Sonny was supposed to be out of town and Jason was supposed to be retired, but here they are, reunited like the temptations. He thinks maybe Moreno was trying to remind them of promises made. Jason asks Sonny if he knows this guy Moreno. Sonny says that he sells watches on the street when the weather isn't bad. Taggert gets angry when Sonny and Jason plead ignorance where Moreno is concerned.

Sonny and Jason could give him something that would allow them to bring Moreno in, but instead they pretend like they know nothing and next week something of Moreno's will go up in smoke. AJ arrives and demands that Michael be released from Jason's care immediately. Alexis interrupts and says that this is not the time or the place for AJ to be discussing Michael's custody. Taggert agrees. AJ and Taggert start to argue, but Alexis interrupts saying that if AJ wants to discuss Michael, he should do it with her and not her client. As AJ and Alexis continue to argue, Carly arrives. She remains hidden, but breathes a sigh of relief when she sees that Jason is unharmed. Carly tells herself to go home and she leaves without being seen.

Sonny and Jason know that Moreno is behind the fire. Jason knew that something bad like this was coming. Jason is sorry that Sonny can't retaliate because it will make AJ’s case. Sonny says that Moreno isn't worth it. He is a bug. Alexis asks AJ if he really needs to be there. He has expressed his concern. He knows that  Michael is safe. His tactics are very obvious. He came to try and provoke his brother. AJ says that he doesn't have to do anything to make Jason look bad. The way Jason chooses to live his life does if for him. He tells her that it looks like she picked the losing team again.

When Alexis asks what he means by again, AJ asks how else she would explain Ned. As AJ leaves, Sonny asks if she put a frog down his shorts. Alexis says that she imagines AJ is on his way to see his attorney. She tells Jason and Sonny that if they are in the middle of a turf war, they need to leave her out. Jason says that he doesn't know what he is in the middle of. He just knows that he didn't start it and he does not intend to continue it. He asks her to please not quit on him now. Alexis says that there is no chance of that. AJ just made the mistake of gravely irritating her. Jason says that he knew AJ wanted to him to hit him. He wouldn't have, he doesn't think.

A sorrowful Jason appears at the Quartermaine mansion with Michael in his arms. Carly smiles at him, but Jason just stands there silently, holding Michael regretting what he has to do. Lila comes into the foyer. When she realizes what is going on, she apologizes to Jason saying that she would have stopped it if she had known. AJ tells Lila that she would have been making a terrible mistake because Michael belongs with his family. AJ demands that Jason give him his son, but Jason hands Michael to Carly.

Michael immediately starts to cry while Jason tries to explain things to him. He assures Michael that he will be fine with Carly. AJ intervenes telling Jason to say his good byes and go. Emily asks AJ why he is trying to tell Jason how to handle this. Jason knows Michael, AJ doesn't. Edward asks whose fault that is. Emily asks AJ if he has any compassion for this baby that he supposedly loves. Emily tells Edward and AJ that they aren't acting like they have Michael's best interests at heart. Carly is in tears as she watches Jason say good bye to Michael. Jason tells Michael that he loves him and he may not be able to see him for awhile. He promises that he won't stop fighting to get him back. Edward tells him that that is enough. As soon as Jason says goodbye, Leticia takes Michael upstairs.

Jason is alone on the docks when Tony happens along. Jason is silent while Tony tells him that he knows why Jason doesn't want to go home. There isn't anyone waiting for him now. It isn't the quiet he is afraid of. It's the prospect of facing all of those little things. He might sit down on the sofa and feel a lump behind his back and it is one of Michael's toys. He might find a plastic spoon  shaped like an airplane or trip over a little boot. All the small, but significant items that he will never need again.

Those tiny little reminders of another time will cut him to the bone time and time again. Even after the little things are gone, it won't get any easier. If he is feeling bad now, well welcome to a world of pain. Tony tells Jason that he has waited a long time to say this to him. It is so sweet to be able to tell him now that what goes around comes around. Jason, who has finally heard enough, turns around and punches Tony just as Sonny arrives on the docks. Tony starts to stand up calling Jason a tough guy when Jason hits him again.

Jason arrives home with Sonny. He is reluctant to go into his penthouse now that Michael is gone. As he starts to walk in Sonny invites him to stay at his place for the night. Jason declines saying  that this is where he lives. It's gonna be like this every night and he had better get used to it how it is. Sonny leaves Jason alone. Jason wanders aimlessly around the penthouse sadly taking in the emptiness.

Jason tells Sonny that he knows Sonny is trying to protect him but as long as Jason is a target the court will assume he is involved. The cleanest they ever looked was when they had no competition so their best move is to get rid of Moreno as quietly as possible. Sonny insists that if Jason is going to have any chance of getting Michael back, he has to stay out of it.

Jason argues that he spent the last several months working in a motorcycle shop and coming home for dinner every night and what good did it do? He still lost Michael. The people in this town think Jason is dirty, so why not be and help himself anyway he can. When Carly knocks on the door, Sonny suggests they get him a body guard so he can be protected from that witch. Sonny leaves at the sight of Carly telling Jason he can deal with this. Carly is there to tell Jason about Michael who cries day and night as he misses Jason so much.

Lila shocks the Quartermaines when she takes matters into her own hands by taking the bull by the horns. She calls Jason and invites him to the mansion to visit Michael. Lila asks Jason to please come and see Michael. She assures Jason that Michael isn't sick or hurt, he just needs him. Jason agrees to come right away. Jason puts his gun away and informs Sonny that Moreno will have to wait. Michael needs him. Sonny watches as Jason rushes out. Lila hangs up the phone and informs the Q's that Jason is coming. Carly is noncommittal at the news, Emily is delighted, but Edward and AJ point out that it is violation of the court order. Lila is unconcerned and cheerfully tells them to have her arrested and then instructs Emily to have the cook prepare something for Jason to eat.

Sonny asks Jason if he ever thinks about what his life would have been if he hadn’t taken Sonny’s job offer? Jason honestly says no. Sonny wasn’t planning on involving him in anything illegal, he even promised Robin. What was he was thinking? He seems to feel responsible for Jason’s situation. Jason points out that wasn’t Sonny’s choice, it was Jason’s whether he choose to do something illegal. Sonny laments that Jason was just a kid who had only been out of the hospital for a few months and he didn’t know what he was getting himself into. Jason observes that he did know as everyone told him, Mac, Robin, ect. Sonny worries that Jason could lose Michael because of the business that he brought Jason into. Jason said this isn’t Sonny’s fault as Sonny didn’t lie to him, he always told him the truth.

Carly bursts in asking to talk to Jason. Sonny immediately leaves. Carly reports that Michael is better, especially when he is outside but sometimes he smiles. He constantly talks about, Dadda. She hands Jason a bag containing her fur coat and the diamonds that Jason gave her. She tells him that she can’t keep them if she wants to make AJ fall in love with her.

March 23 - May 10, 1999
Alexis advises Jason that the doctor was very impressed with the bond between Jason and Michael. She asks if there is any way that Jason can get an invite to the Q’s today while the doctor will be there? Sonny grins and says his mouthpiece can get Jason in!

Sonny arrives for the ELQ board meeting with Jason and Alexis in tow. Edward demands to know why Jason is there given the restraining order. Jason explains that he is there for the board meeting. Edward says that since Jason sold his ELQ stock to Sonny, he no longer is allowed to attend the board meetings. Sonny gleefully explains that he sold the stock back to Jason. Alexis confirms that as of an hour ago, Jason owns 6% of ELQ stock which entitles him to attend any and all board meetings. Edward is furious, but Carly looks pleased. Edward "allows" Sonny and Jason to attend the meeting, but says that Jason is still not allowed to see Michael. Edward will not have Jason make Carly and AJ look bad. Sonny says that they just came there to do business. Ned suggests that they get down to it then.

Jason asks Emily if she is okay. Emily says that she is worried about Michael. As Monica says that they are all worried, the doctor comes down the stairs with Carly and AJ who are apologizing for Michael's behavior. Apparently, the visit didn't go well. AJ explains that Michael is still getting used to the house. The doctor asks if AJ and Carly are engaging Michael in things that he likes to do. AJ and Carly say that Michael likes to take walks.

As AJ and Carly continue to talk to the doctor, Emily comes down the stairs carrying Michael. AJ begs her not to do this, but Emily says that the doctor needs to know the truth. Michael is happy when Emily hands him to Jason. She says that what Michael likes isn't going for walks, it is being with Jason. Emily appears to be right as Michael and Jason interact wonderfully.

The doctor watches as Jason explains what is going on to Michael. She asks if he always does that. Jason says that Michael understands more than he can tell them and he has a right to know what's going on in his own life. The doctor notes that Michael is focused and content with Jason. She tells AJ and Carly that that is what they should be working for. Michael hasn't stopped growing up just because the adults in his life haven't decided where he should do it. She thank the family saying that it has been an informative afternoon. After she goes, AJ demands that Jason give him his son. Jason says that he is going to put Michael to bed and that if AJ doesn't like it, he can call the cops.

Sonny’s ploy worked! Alexis and Jason soon arrive back at the Quartermaine’s. Edward accuses Jason of violating the restraining order and demands that he leave since there isn’t a board meeting today. Alexis gloats as she shows them a court order allowing Jason visitation rights. Carly is thrilled and stands in the background beaming with this news. AJ is flabbergasted when Alexis announces that Jason has been granted unlimited visitation rights. She assures AJ that it is all legal. The visits must occur at the Q mansion, but AJ and Carly cannot limit the length or number. AJ tells Jason that there is no way he is letting him near his son.

AJ is meeting up with his man. AJ hands him money, and tells him not to think of blackmail. The man says that he is not going to risk having Sonny and Jason as enemies. AJ says that if anyone finds out that he hired him to torch the warehouse, there will be hell to pay. Carly overhears AJ paying off the arsonist who torched Sonny and AJ's warehouse! She makes noise, but doesn't get caught.

While Sonny and Jason are meeting, Carly bursts in demanding to know if Jason is okay because she saw blood at the Quartermaine's after Jason left last night. Jason assures her that he is fine and asks her to leave so that he and Sonny can get on with their meeting. Carly then drops her bombshell, she knows who torched the warehouse, It was A.J.!!! Sonny shows her a picture of the arsonist and she confirms that he was the man A.J. was meeting with on the docks. Sonny urges Jason to go to the judge with this knowledge and says that Carly could testify and then Jason would get Michael back. Carly freaks and says she can't testify. This leads to another fight between Carly and Sonny.

Sonny storms out of the penthouse with the parting shot of not being able to stand being around Carly for another second. Carly gets emotional about the fact that Jason hasn't told Sonny about her plan. Jason tells her the only reason he didn't tell Sonny was because the plan was so stupid Sonny wouldn't believe it! But maybe now there is another way. He says AJ burned his business to the ground, not Marino. Carly questions but is her testimony going to be enough to prove that? She doesn't think so with her past. Jason points out the arsonist may flip. Carly points out that even if AJ is arrested and serves time, eventually he will get out and come after them for custody of Michael again and she doesn't ever want Michael to have to go through this again.

At the penthouse, Sonny is doing paperwork when Carly arrives. He tells her that Jason is across the hall, but Carly says that she came to see him. Sonny tells Carly that whatever she is selling, he isn't buying. Carly says that she knows that Sonny hates her and she almost admires him for that. She would hate anyone who did what Sonny thinks she did to Jason. But he doesn't know the whole story. Jason didn't tell him because he wouldn't betray her like that.

Everything she has done has been for Jason. She knows how much Jason and Michael love each other and she wouldn't want anyone but Jason to be Michael's father. Unfortunately, AJ has some legal rights so she had to come up with a creative idea of how to keep Michael safe from AJ. She accused Jason of kidnapping Michael because she wanted the Q's to trust her. Once they start to, she can get AJ to marry her and she will live with him for a little while and then she is going to ruin him.

When he is destroyed and broken, she will file for sole custody and bring Michael back to Jason. AJ won't ever be able to come near Michael again. Carly asks Sonny if he can see now that they are on the same side. Sonny tells Carly that this is the second time she has come to him behind Jason's back and there won't be a third. Carly tells Sonny that she knew he would twist anything she said to use against her. Jason cares about him so much and she thought the least she could do is try to explain for his sake. If Sonny is determined to hate her, that's fine.

As Carly starts to leave, Sonny asks if she is deluded enough to think that Jason believes all of her crap. Carly insists that Jason believes her and trusts her. Sonny says that Jason thinks he owes her because she is Michael's mother. For Michael's sake, Jason refuses to fight. Sonny says that he doesn't owe Carly a damn thing except payback for using Jason. Carly angrily says that using Jason is Sonny's game. Sonny is the one who stays in his safe penthouse while he sends Jason out on the streets to get shot at and hassled by cops. Sonny is the user.

Sonny calmly, but coldly tells Carly that she shouldn't have crossed him. He told her that before. Carly says that she isn't afraid of him. Sonny tells her that she should be. Carly says oh yeah and raises her hand to slap Sonny. Sonny grabs Carly's hand and holds her arms down. As they continue to struggle, Jason arrives. Jason tells Sonny to let Carly go. Sonny releases Carly and tells Jason that it is time to cut the tramp loose. Carly tells Jason that she wanted to explain their plan to Sonny. Jason tells Carly that she shouldn't have come. What's going on with them has nothing to do with Sonny.

Carly says that Sonny hates her and she doesn't want him to turn Jason against her. Sonny tells Carly that Jason can see for himself that she is nothing but a pimp for her own kid. Jason calmly tells Sonny not to insult Carly in front of him. Then he turns to Carly and tells her not to pull something like this again. This has nothing to do with something. Carly leaves, but tearfully tells Jason that everything she is doing is for the three of them. Sonny moans, “Tell me that you don't believe a damn word that comes out of her mouth?” Sonny observes that he knows Jason is trying to protect her because she is Michael’s mother but the reality is he should be protecting Michael FROM her. Sonny points out that Jason would still have custody if not for that slut. All AJ has to do to get her to sell Jason out is put some cash in front of her.

Jason understands why Sonny hates Carly and asks him to back off. This is Jason’s problem and he has to solve it for himself. He admits that he hates defending Carly to him and asks Sonny to back off. Sonny agrees but asks Jason to keep Carly away from him. Jason agrees. Sonny urges him not to trust Carly.

At Luke’s Club, A.J. and Carly talk. He advises her to stop being intimidated by two bit thugs, Luke, Jason, Sonny. He gloats the Quartermaine’s have true legitimate power and now she is one of them. Carly apologizes for not coming to A.J. sooner. A.J. says that he cannot immediately forgive Carly, but that every time he looks at Michael, she gets a step closer.

Sonny, Jason, and Hannah walk into Luke's as Carly watches with disdain. Carly expresses her disapproval to A.J. as Jason and Hannah discuss the possibility of Hannah working at Luke's. As Hannah and Jason chat, Carly invites A.J. to dance and does not hesitate to get as possible to AJ in an attempt to make Jason jealous. A.J. catches onto Carly and accuses her of putting on a show for Jason, which Carly adamantly denies. Carly kisses A.J. and they leave the club. Luke stops by and invites Hannah to come by tomorrow for her to get started at her new job at his club.

Carly and A.J. show up at Luke's. Carly watches as Hannah and Jason chat. Carly demands service and Luke sends Hannah over to her table. AJ and Carly discuss the custody trial.

Hannah sits with Jason as she takes her break. A pacifier falls out of Jason's pocket and Hannah is curious. Jason tells her it belongs to his son. She tells him she loves children. Sonny stops by and asks Hannah if she has first night jitters and smiles that smile. Hannah plays it cool with Sonny and on her way back to work tells Jason she would love to meet his son. After she walks away, Jason smirks that he doesn’t think Hannah likes Sonny very much.

Carly meets Bobbie, and feeling sorry for herself focuses on being abandoned and having no one on her side, then gets catty when Hannah appears. Bobbie doesn't take it, and leaves her daughter in a snit.

Later, Carly invites Hannah to take it outside, and words soon come to blows as they slap each other. Sonny and Jason break up the fight. Carly tells Hannah to keep her hands off "my man" or she is going to die! Sonny drags Hannah back inside Luke's while Jason and Carly talk outside. Carly uses the old "someone has to look out for you" line to justify her attack on Hannah. Jason reminds her that she in middle of her plot to seduce AJ. He asks how she thinks she is going to be able to pull that off if she is going to go around smacking random waitresses for bumping into him. He continues that she should not be concerned if he wants to flirt with anyone.

Carly goes ballistic and tells Jason she carrying out her plan for Jason; so that she, Michael, and he can be a family. She threatens him that she can always change her plan and stay with AJ and count her millions. He questions if he really has to make a list of all the crap he has taken from her since the day they met? He asks if she has any idea how much easier his life would be without her in it. She asks why should she knock herself out for him. She says he could give her a hint every once in awhile that he likes her, and maybe can acknowledge everything she has done.

Upset he lashes out, “You want thanks Carly? No problem. Thanks Carly for double crossing me. Thanks Carly for leaving me alone with Michael when you couldn’t cope and then giving him away to the people you made me promise not to let near him. Thank you Carly for telling the police and anybody who would listen that I was a violent kidnapper who kept you afraid for your life. And finally thank you, thanks Carly for drop kicking just about anything in my life that had nothing to do with you!” She did want to know how he really felt, so tells him thank you! She declares he can have all the cocktail waitresses he wants. She states that her and Michael will be just fine without him and starts walking away, waiting for him to stop her which he doesn’t.

She turns and looks at him and says he could at least pretend and come after her. He asks her why does she complicate a thing until it isn’t recognisable anymore. He admits that he likes her, if he didn’t his life would be a whole lot simpler. Why does he like her, that is a lot harder to answer. He admits that they are friends and the times he has needed her, she has been there.

April 21 - 30, 1999
Jason runs into Hannah on the docks. She asks if Jason has seen Sonny as he just wandered off. She comments that Sonny blames himself for Luke’s son (Lucky) dying in the fire. Why does Sonny feel responsible for every bad thing that happens to be people he cares about. She rambles on about his wife dying in the explosion and how terrible it was they lost their baby, and that kid (Stone) dying of AIDS. She asks if there isn’t something she can do to help Sonny? He asks if she asked Sonny that? She informs him that Sonny advised her to stay as far away from him as possible.

Carly is eavesdropping from around the corner. Sonny comes up behind her and stops her from approaching them. He warns Carly that she has to apologise to Hannah. Carly then approaches and does apologise before leaving. After Jason and Carly walk away, Hannah is sure Sonny is to thank for that apology. Privately, Carly asks Jason if he saw the newspaper article blaming Jason for being responsible for the fire on the front page. She wants to know why she can’t go to the cops?

Jason asks Carly if she has found any evidence that AJ started the fire that killed Lucky. She has been looking but says no she hasn’t. It would make sense since they know AJ started the fire at the warehouse so would make sense that he started the fire at the Motorcycle shop. She will search his briefcase later and if she finds the evidence, then her and Michael will be out of there. Jason warns her that if AJ did it, he will be scared, maybe even desperate. She is sure she can handle AJ. He asks her to please not say, “Trust Me!”.

Carly enters Kelly's and finds out that Hannah is living over Kelly’s (in Carly’s old room). Carly leaves and chases Hannah down on the docks. Hannah asks her if she has a problem? Carly proceeds to give Hannah a hard time, and tells her that she guesses that Hannah isn’t as dumb as she seems. Her helpless bimbo routine is almost as good as Carly’s.

Carly warns her that Hannah is too late as she got there first, telling her that Jason has a prior commitment. Hannah snarks that dragging a guy through a custody battle is not the same as going steady. Carly tells her that if she was interested in Jason that she would have to go through her. Hannah declares that threats make her hostile and she pushes back. As Hannah walks away, Jason comes running up with the drugs he found in the coffee at the warehouse (someone trying to set him up), he throws the drug package to Carly and tells her to go home and flush them. Carly runs off. Then Jason notices Hannah saw him, and up run the cops to arrest him.

Note: Carly’s Dream from 5/31/99 full episode is on the S&C #3C as a bonus episode. This is a classic all about Carly episode! July 1 - August 31, 1999
A somber Jason finds Carly in the rose garden. She is immediately concerned by the look on his face and asks if someone hurt him? Robin? Sonny? A sad Jason tells her that he has to break a promise. Carly observes he never made any promises to break. The only one she can remember him making is that he'd wait for her and Michael.  Carly chatters trying to stop Jason’s words as she can see that it is bad. He sadly tells her that he promised to protect Michael from being hurt by anyone, but he didn’t realise that the person who would hurt him would be himself.

Jason says that he has done a wrong thing. What? Let's discuss this, she says. Jason takes a deep breath. He says that he's giving him up. He will not have visitation, no shared custody, not even to see him. Carly asks who put this idea in Jason's head that he would ever hurt Michael. Carly asks why he is doing this. Is this Sonny's doing? Jason asks how many homes Michael has? None! Not two! He isn't happy in either place. He loves me, but he doesn't' know why he has to get used to the mansion if Jason will be there to save him. Jason says that it has to end. Someone  has to quit this, and the logical person is me, now. Carly says that she  just has to be married a bit longer, then she can leave AJ and be a family. You, Michael me, the way we planned. Jason says that she did good, called all the shots, but AJ didn't play along. He will be Michael's family forever.

Sonny stops by Jason’s as he is sadly packing up Michael’s things. He tells Sonny that he is taking off. He can’t stay here, not now. Jason gets chocked up as he tells Sonny that he can’t even look at this room and not see the people who are no longer here. He shares that Carly brought him a lot of problems, but she also brought him a life. He has to leave so that when he comes back, this can just be a place he lives not a place where his family isn’t. Sonny tells him he needs Jason, needs his cover to run his business. Sonny asks Jason to remind himself that he is a good father, that he did everything for Michael’s sake and that is everything.

Sonny’s Breakdown July 30 - August 3, 1999
7/30 Sonny is sitting in his trashed apartment thinking of when he told Lily that he chose a life. He sees her holding a little boy and then it turns to Hannah holding Michael and a beat up Juan in the hospital. Sonny takes the picture of him and Lily out of the fireplace and takes a shard of glass from it and looks at it intently. Carly convinces the guard to let her in and she sees Sonny and the trashed apartment and is totally shocked. She says his name and he looks at her. Carly keeps trying to talk to an almost comatose Sonny. He isn't responding to anything she says. When Carly asks to see the picture Sonny is holding, the one with the broken glass, Sonny ignores her, until she gently tries to take the picture away. Sonny grabs on to the picture tighter and has the look of a wounded animal in his eyes.

Carly explains to Sonny that he could hurt himself on the broken glass and she doesn't want that. Defeated, Sonny lets Carly take the broken picture away. She tells Sonny that she will be right back. She goes outside and tells the bodyguard to find Benny or Johnny. She demands that he not come back until he has found one of them. The bodyguard reluctantly leaves after Carly threatens to tell Jason that he gave her a hard time. Back inside the penthouse, Sonny is nowhere to be seen. Carly calls his name and then says that she is going to open the drapes to let in a little light. As she starts to open them, Sonny shields his eyes from the light and demands to know what she is doing. Sonny angrily closes the curtains and goes to find one of his bodyguard. He is furious when Carly tells him that she sent him away. He demands that she leave, but she doesn't want to go until one of the bodyguards returns. Sonny tries to pay Carly to leave saying that that is what she  always wants.

Carly does not take the money and calmly picks up the phone. Carly looks terrified when Sonny grabs the phone from her and throws it on the ground. He demands that she leave again, but Carly just turns and stares at him defiantly.   Carly explains that she was calling Bobbie. Sonny angrily tells Carly that Bobbie can't help. He tells her that she is even dumber than he though. Carly says that she doesn't care if Sonny hates her. She knows he would never hurt her.

Jason loves her and even if Sonny doesn't understand that, he respects it. Carly tells Sonny that he needs help. She wants to call Bobbie. Carly is in tears when she starts to straighten up. Sonny tells her not to bother. He already redecorated. Lily would have done a better job, but its' better this way. When you open up the door you see the truth. Everything Sonny Corinthos touches gets destroyed.   Carly tries to stop Sonny from drinking more, but he tells her he can do whatever he wants. She asks how long it has been since he has eaten or slept.

Sonny says that eating and sleeping are overrated. Sonny tells Carly that the people she loves may be bleeding and broken when she is done with them, but at least they are alive. He can't say that. Carly tells Sonny that she doesn't care who he is, he doesn't have the power of life and death. People don't drop dead because of something he does. She tells him how her adopted mother died of a stroke while they are arguing. She knows that it wasn't her fault. God doesn't think that way, and neither do the people who love Sonny.

They wouldn't blame him. Sonny tells her not to explain his sickness to him. If she can explain things to herself fine. He is not afraid to look the devil in the eye. As he says this he smashes the half-full bottle of liquor he is holding against the table. The bottle shatters and the alcohol splashes everywhere, including onto Carly.  Carly tries to get Sonny to let her look at his hand. He cut it when he smashed the bottle. Sonny looks at the hand and says that the blood isn't his, it's Lily's.

When Jason returns to Port Charles, he heads to Kelly's for a cup of coffee. Tammy tells him that Johnny is looking for both him and Sonny, prompting Jason to race to the penthouse.

Carly helps Sonny tend to his wounded hand. He keeps repeating "I did  it". Carly asks what he is talking about. It was a reference to the deaths of  Lily and the baby. Sonny told her every detail of the night Lily died, though he didn't mention that the reason he wasn't driving was because he had been drinking. He told Carly how beautiful Lily was, what she was wearing, how he finally realized that he loved this woman who adored him.

8/2 Later, Carly told Sonny that she always thought he was a cold, empty shell of a person but now she knew why and understood. They shared a very tender, though not romantic, moment which Jason walked in on. (This was one of the best stories I've seen. It was wonderful to see Sonny and Carly like this. She understands him better and maybe he will understand her a little better, too.)

8/3 Carly and Sonny are still sitting on the couch when Jason walks in. They rise. Sonny tells Jason that Carly was there looking for Jason and would  not leave. Sonny goes in search of a drink. Carly tells Jason what happened. Jason and Carly hug and he thanks her for being there. Jason  asks and Carly says that Sonny did not hurt her, just scared her. She tells Jason that she understands Sonny and his behavior better. Jason tells her that Sonny did not mean the hurtful things he said.

Carly has had a revelation, someone does hurt more that her. The people she loves are still alive, but Sonny's loved ones are dead. Carly tells Jason that Benny and Johnny were out looking for him, he tells her Johnny is outside. He says she did the best anyone could do when Sonny gets that way. Carly says she just kept telling herself to hold on till Jason returned. Jason tells her he came back because his life is in PC. Jason tells Carly to go home, but she first wants him to promise that he does not hate her or think she betrayed him. She tells him again that she did all of this for him, Michael, and herself. They embrace.

Sonny comes downstairs and is still surly. He wants Carly to leave. Jason walks her out. They talk in front of the elevator. Carly says she understands how Sonny feels knowing that she saw him that way, his did not mean to trust her. Jason says he knows that Carly will not betray that trust by telling anyone what happened. Jason says he owes her one for being there when it counted. She reminds him that she owes him far more that one and that she did not do it as a payback. Jason says he admires Carly for getting through the time with Sonny. Carly leaves.

Jason goes back in and starts to clean up. Sonny tells him to leave it.  Sonny tells Jason about what happened with Juan. Jason tells him he is not to blame for Juan's condition. Jason reminds Sonny of all the ways he made Jason's life what it is. Jason tells him that he wouldn't change anything, that Sonny believed him and gave him a new life, Jason has no regrets. Jason tells Sonny that Lily would not want him to live his live like this and reminds him that Lily forgave him. Sonny tells Jason that he was right about Carly being brave.

8/4 Later, when Carly arrives, Sonny is upstairs. Carly asks how he is doing? He tells her it is better for Sonny if she isn’t there, as he isn’t used to her. Jason thanks for her for helping Sonny and he knows it must have been hard on her sticking it out. She knows it is hard on Jason too. She and Jason discuss Carly assures Jason that he is not in this alone. He has her. Carly asks Jason why he came back? He admits because people here need him. She tells him and not just Sonny. She asks if there is anyone he needs? He changes the topic and asks if the Quartermaines gave her in trouble for her being gone last night. She says that she didn’t lie as well as she usually does. He thanks her for stopping by and escorts her out. He thanks her again for helping Sonny.

8/12 Carly goes to Jason to tell him about Michael’s name change, it’s clearly hard for her. They have a long talk about how things could have been different and how Carly appreciates Jason being around. Jason is clearly falling for her. Carly tells Jason she would do anything to be with him. He asks, “Even leave AJ?” She nods. He points out, “And drag Michael through another custody battle?”  Carly tells Jason she loves him, and that she knows that he loves her too, and she will always love him. She’s crying hard, and he holds her close and almost kisses her, they lean into each other for a moment, then back off into a big hug. The moment is lost, Jason tries to calm her down and sends her home.

She asks him to loan her money for a cab, while the tears are streaming down her face. He puts the money in  her hand, kisses it. She leans in to kiss him, still crying, he strokes her arm, as the elevator doors open behind her, AJ comes out not looking very happy to see his wife almost kissing his brother. AJ tells Jason that Carly is *his* wife and warns him to stay away from her. Carly says she's there to tell Jason about Michael being christened. Jason and AJ quarrel and go after each other physically. Jason lets go of AJ, tells him to go home to his family and be glad he's alive. Jason goes back into the penthouse and tells Sonny what happened with AJ. Jason now realizes all the times he could have turned things around with Carly. Sonny says he broke things off for all the right reasons.

8/16 Carly goes to see Sonny, who is sharing an evening with Hannah. Carly wants to talk to Sonny and Hannah tries to prevent it by warning Carly this isn’t a good time. Sonny nicely lets Hannah know their evening is over and she takes the hint and heads out effectively ends his evening with her. Carly requests that Sonny inform Jason of her pending vacation to Maui with AJ, but Sonny is less than receptive. He asks if he looks like her messenger boy? She reminds him of when she found him in a dark and dank room, with broken glass everywhere. She tells him that she really thought her plan would work. She kept promising Jason that she would come back to him and she had this picture of her family with Jason and Michael. She doesn’t get to have that and it is completely her fault. Jason tried to warn her that it wouldn’t work. Jason knew it was all a plan and she never really betrayed Jason. She cries that she never meant for Jason to break his own heart and give up that boy. She still didn’t get it and tried to hold on.

Her finding a broken Sonny made her realise she has to let Jason go and stop chasing after him. She is going to let him go and that is why she needs him to tell Jason that she is going on a family trip. She is going to try to give Michael two parents and try to make her marriage work and give Michael a family. Sonny is puzzled why she is telling him this. She admits that she destroyed the only real chance of him having a family and it was Sonny who made her realise this. Sonny snarks so she wants him to break it to Jason gently and make Carly look good.

She laughs that Jason knows how screwed up she is and he accepts her, just like he accepts Sonny. She asks him again to please just tell Jason. He agrees to think about it. Carly maintains that she knows Sonny better now. He declares that whatever happened the other night doesn’t make them friends. She doesn’t know him and she didn’t even help him, she isn’t much of a nurse! She says the only reason she stayed there that night was for Jason, it wasn’t about Sonny. She knows Sonny has a soul.

He says that oh now she is going to act all good and noble. He asks what is she going to do if he doesn’t tell Jason? Is she going to tell everyone how she found him and what the deal is. She just wants him to make Jason understand that she is going to do the best for Michael to give him a family. Sonny finally agrees to help Carly and tells her to take care of her kid, and then grudgingly adds, “And yourself”.
