Bo & Hope #71 December 20, 2007 - February 18, 2008: 8 hour original edit
DVD #71A 12/20 Hope questions Belle about what upset Shawn at the reunion. Belle denies that anything happened. Meanwhile, Shawn has Bo meet him at Philip's office, where he tells him that Philip planted Kate's gun for Shawn to find. Philip denies it. Bo guesses that Belle was involved and Shawn reluctantly confirms. Shawn asks his father not to tell Hope that Belle was involved in the gun incident. Bo can't make that promise, and later informs his wife.
12/24 Belle and Shawn throw a surprise birthday/anniversary/Christmas Eve party for Hope and Bo at Chez Rouge. Belle shares with Kayla her feelings of insecurity about Bo and Hope. Kayla advises her to hang in there and show her in-laws how much she loves their son. Later, Kayla encourages Hope to give Belle a chance. Hope makes an effort, but then she overhears Chloe telling Belle that Philip still wants her and that if she wants him, he's all hers.
12/25 Hope continued to celebrate her anniversary and birthday with Bo, despite thinking about what she had overheard between Chloe and Belle in the bathroom earlier. When Hope saw Belle and Shawn kissing under the mistletoe, she only told Bo that she hoped Belle and Shawn would last as long as they had. After the birthday cake was brought out, Hope gave a toast to marriage stating that it worked only if the two people were in love and honest with one another. Belle took Hope aside and told her that she agreed.
While Hope was pleased with Belle’s words, the moment of happiness ended quickly when Philip arrived at the party. With the room quiet enough to hear a pin drop, Belle stepped forward in front of everyone and reamed out Philip for showing up to the party. When Philip protested saying he was only there for the anniversary party, Belle cut him off and said he was only there for her, which was pointless because she did not want him. Belle warned him to get over it and get over her. Philip wished everyone a Merry Christmas and slunk out of the restaurant.
12/26 On Christmas morning, the Hortons gather at Alice's to hang their ornaments on the tree. A distracted Chelsea sees the ghost of a grown up Zach in the window as she attempts to hang his ornament on the tree. Startled, she drops the ornament and Bo catches before it crashes to the floor.
Hope notices how quiet she is and asks if something is wrong. Chelsea confides that she is missing Zach and Hope tells her they all miss him. Burdened with guilt, she reminds that it is her fault that he is gone and not there to spend the holiday with his family. She turns and runs out. Bo comes over and hugs Hope and she fills him in. He follows Chelsea out and comforts her.
Later, Stefano and Rolf tend to a mystery man in the laboratory.
12/28 Hope joined Marlena at Chez Rouge, where Marlena was lost in thought, remembering John's accident and death. Marlena filled her in on meeting up with the psychic, Crystal, outside the dry cleaner's on Christmas. Hope echoed Marlena's initial concerns that the woman was just a con artist. Marlena insisted that Crystal seemed genuine and that the woman knew things she couldn't ordinarily have known. Because of this, and because she herself sensed it, Marlena now believed John was still alive. Marlena tells Hope about her interaction with Crystal via flashbacks.
Hope tried to convince her that Crystal could have been hired by the DiMeras as a distraction, to keep her mind off of Sami's situation so Stefano could pull Johnny into the DiMera fold. Marlena persisted in her beliefs, so Hope suggested they go visit the fortune-teller. They found the woman's shop boarded up, and learned that no one had been inside the building in months because it had been condemned. Hope assured an upset Marlena that she believed Marlena had indeed met Crystal, and vowed that she and Bo would help investigate who the psychic could be working for.
At the DiMera mansion, Rolf told a livid Stefano that their houseguest had escaped, presumably through the tunnel. Stefano bellowed that they must find him immediately. Stefano shouted at someone on the phone that the houseguest must be found or else; just then the hooded figure came in through the French doors. Stefano demanded to know if the man had been seen, but the man ignored him and hurried away. Rolf chased after him with a stun gun and a hypodermic needle full of sedatives, warning Stefano that this houseguest could be very dangerous. Stefano chuckled that he was counting on it.
1/2 Roman and Bo were at the police station, eating pizza and going over files from Brady's case, when they were interrupted by a delivery man. He brought Bo a tuxedo with an invitation from Hope to join her at Chez Rouge. After some good-natured teasing, Roman gave him the night off.
A bit later, Bo met Hope, Steve, and Kayla at the restaurant, where all were dressed to the nines and then, to everyone's surprise, Marlena joined them. The five of them were seated at a table, where they paid each other compliments, made champagne toasts to things like family and friendship, danced and laughed, enjoying each other's company and appreciating their time together. Marlena told Hope and Bo she had resolved to John to pull their family back together, even though she missed John terribly and felt she should be doing more to find Brady.
As Bo and Hope danced and made plans to bring their own family closer by hosting Sunday dinners, Marlena confronted Crystal outside. Crystal told her that Brady was in danger and needed Marlena's help, and that Marlena should let herself be guided by the picture she received after John died. Marlena tried to press her for more information, but Crystal broke free of her grasp and ran off. Bo, Hope, Steve, and Kayla came out of Chez Rouge and worriedly asked Marlena what was going on. Marlena covered, then hurried away herself.
Bo, Hope, Steve, and Kayla arrived at the midnight party at the Brady Pub. Hope asked Shawn where Belle was; he covered and said she had decided to be ring in the New Year with her mom. Everyone thought that was a wonderful, selfless idea.
As midnight signaled the arrival of 2008 and strains of "Auld Lang Syne" were heard throughout Salem, Bo and Hope, and Steve and Kayla each shared kisses at midnight and wished each other a Happy New Year; Shawn watched the happy couples wistfully, and drank his beer alone behind the bar; Philip walked onto the terrace of Chez Rouge and greeted the New Year with a hopeful grin as Chloe watched him.
1/3 At the pub, Hope told Shawn that she knew about Belle and Philip. Shawn was angry with his mother for keeping Belle's secret. Hope asked Shawn to let out his emotions. Shawn assured his mother that he would not let his emotions get him into trouble. He told his mother that he would not allow Belle and Philip to destroy everything he has accomplished. Hope wanted Shawn to talk with Belle after he calmed down. Shawn told his mother he wanted a divorce from Belle. Hope apologized for not telling Shawn about Belle's affair. Shawn forgave his mother. He told her he will work out his problems by himself.
1/7 Shawn started his first day at the police academy and Bo and Hope wished him well and presented him with a St. Michael's medal, the family tradition, to keep him safe on the job.
At the Brady Pub, Hope overheard Crystal talking about Marlena and confronted her. Crystal told her that Marlena was in danger.
Bo, Abe and Roman pleaded with DA Bev to lighten up on Lucas, but she wanted hard cold proof, and without it she vowed to go after Lucas and keep him behind bars for a long time.
Crystal talked to her mystery contact and explained that things were not going smoothly and that she would probably have to take Belle and Claire by force.
1/8 At the police station, an angry Marlena burst into Abe's office with Sami and Belle in tow. Marlena demanded answers about how close they were to arresting Stefano but Abe and Roman urged her to remain patient. Increasingly frustrated, Marlena warned that she would take matters into her own hands if they did not move faster. Abe told her that vigilantism could but her in jail, but Marlena explained that she was at her wits end and exhausted from worrying about what loved one she might lose next.
On her way out, Marlena said, "I need you to keep my family safe. I can't take any more of this." A concerned Roman pulled Sami aside and advised her to keep an eye on Marlena. Once the women had exited, Roman, Abe, and Bo agreed to put a tail on Marlena for her own good. As they continued to work on the investigation, they received a break in the case. The building next to the cleaners turned out to be owned by a C.B. DiMera. Puzzled, they wondered who that could be.
E.J. snuck into the DiMera mansion and downstairs. After hiding behind a conveniently placed wall to avoid the exiting Rolf, E.J. snuck into the lab to find a table with a sheet on it. E.J. cautiously moved the sheet back to find a hand with I.V. tubes and wires attached. Shocked, E.J. covered his mouth in disbelief and then worked up the nerve to pull the rest of the sheet back.
Once the sheet was ripped off, the patient and house guest was revealed to be none other than a sleeping John Black. When EJ tries to call the police, Stefano grabs the phone out of his hand and insists that EJ will NOT betray him. EJ tells Stefano he has always respected him, but he is not the man he thought he was and walks out.
Later, Stefano gave a now awake and dressed John Black a file on the woman who was threatening him, telling John that the woman was his mission, and that his mission was vengeance.
1/9 Bo, Hope, Steve, Kayla, and Roman were hanging out at the Brady Pub. Over tea, Kayla caught Hope up on what was going on with the fertility doctor, but expressed concerns that Steve might not be fully on board, that he was just going along with it to appease her.
Meanwhile, the men rehashed all the recent threats against the Bradys and Marlena's family. Bo and Roman filled Steve in on their inability to get a warrant to search the psychic's building, and how they'd learned the building owner's name is C.B. DiMera. Steve suggested he was available for some "after-hours snooping," but Kayla interrupted, reminding him of his appointment at the clinic. She pulled him aside before he left, wanting to make sure that he really wanted a baby; he reassured her that he did, "with all my heart and soul."
Belle stopped by the Pub to pick up Claire, whom Kayla volunteered to wrest away from Grandma Caroline so Belle and Hope could talk. Belle apologized to Hope, who agreed that Belle was at fault for what had happened. Hope then told her that she was hurting for all of them, Belle included. Belle left with Claire, and Kayla advised Hope that there was still a chance Belle and Shawn would work things out. They then discussed their fears that an increasingly frustrated Marlena would take matters into her own hands with the DiMeras.
Bo and Roman dropped by Crystal's store and ran into Rob, Crystal's partner, as he was leaving the place. Rob said he was just working on renovating the building. They asked if he'd heard of C.B. DiMera, but he feigned innocence, and denied them admission when they asked to take a look around inside. The Brady men left, agreeing that they should keep an eye on the place. Bo returned to the Pub and invited an excited Hope to join him in staking out the psychic's.
1/10 Bo and Hope went undercover, as homeless people to stake out Crystal's place. Hope took pictures of Crystal's friend with a camera phone. Later, Bo took Crystal to the police station for questioning. Bo confronts Crystal and takes her to the station for questioning but she refuses to talk.
1/11 In Roman's office, Roman, Bo, and Hope looked on as Marlena angrily confronted Crystal. She appealed to Crystal, saying half of her heart had died with John, but just when she'd convinced herself she could survive without him, Crystal came along and cruelly told her he was alive. Marlena pleaded with her for the truth. Crystal reluctantly admitted that while she hadn't seen John, she'd heard Stefano DiMera had him. Marlena was ecstatic, but the others demanded more answers.
Just then Crystal's attorney entered, saying they must charge her or release her. After telling Marlena she was touched by her love for John, Crystal left with the lawyer. Marlena was ready to go to Stefano's, but the others reminded her they needed a search warrant. Marlena was shocked to learn she was the only person who believed John was alive.
Hope urged her to be rational. Marlena admitted she knew John's being alive was impossible, yet she implored Roman to get the search warrant. Roman said no judge would grant one on the word of an alleged psychic. Marlena was aware that they all thought she'd lost it, but she reminded them that she hadn't yet done anything rash.
Nick arrived and told Marlena he had tested the contents of John's urn: they weren't John's ashes. Marlena squealed and hugged him. This was still not enough to convince Roman, who felt Marlena hadn't been thinking clearly since John died. She begged his indulgence, and he finally agreed to at least try to get a warrant. Hope reluctantly admitted John might possibly be alive, but they all reminded Marlena that even if he were, he could be anywhere in the world. Marlena said the mansion was a good place to start.
Marlena, Bo, and Hope knocked on the door. Marlena excitedly told her shocked daughter that John was alive, but they needed E.J.'s help to get inside the mansion before Stefano realized they were onto him. At first E.J. feigned ignorance, but Marlena urged him to stand by his vow to be a better person for Johnny's sake. E.J. finally admitted to the stunned group that John was not dead.
1/14 To everyone's horror, E.J. confirmed that Stefano and Dr. Rolf had somehow resurrected John and was holding him captive at the mansion. E.J. agreed to sign a statement in order for the police to get a search warrant.
Crystal went forward with her plan to kidnap Belle and Claire. While Belle was on the phone talking to Philip, her bodyguard was wounded as she and Claire were taken hostage.
Bo, Hope, Roman and Marlena made their plan to get into the mansion to search for "John". Dr. Rolf and Stefano continued programming "John" but he was not as willing a recipient as they had hoped. While Bo and Roman questioned Stefano, Hope and Marlena entered the mansion and penetrated to the basement where the shocked duo found "John."
1/15 In the back of the kidnappers' van, Crystal said they were only trying to protect them from Stefano. Crystal said to trust her, because she and Rob would keep Belle and Claire out of harm's way. Belle wanted to know whom Crystal worked for, but Crystal said, "All you need to know is that you're safe, and you're with family."
In the laboratory beneath the DiMera mansion, Marlena began freeing John from his shackles. "It really is you," she said excitedly. He stared at her blankly. "I suppose it is," he replied. "Now tell me...who are you?" As she continued working on his restraints, he studied her face impassively, then closed his eyes and said he recognized her perfume.
"I'm Marlena," she said, extending her hand. She reacted visibly when he shook it, but continued, "Your name is John." He repeated the name, and told her not to be afraid, that he wouldn't hurt her. She put her other hand around his and said she wasn't afraid: she knew he would never hurt her. He asked, "Then why are you trembling?"
She hesitated, then said, "Because you were dead." She began to cry, and apologized for being emotional.
They ran into Bo and Hope in the hallway. Bo was thrilled to see his old friend alive, but when he reached out to John, John quickly grabbed him, saying, "He's a cop." Bo and Marlena convinced John that Bo was a friend, and John released him. Marlena explained that John's didn't remember them, and John said he wanted to get out of there before they returned with the needles. Marlena assured him no one would hurt him again.
Stefano escorted Bo and Roman, who were armed with a search warrant, into the DiMera Mansion, and feigned surprise that they seemed to think John was there. Bo told him they were only interested in the tunnels and caves as Stefano calmly continued drinking sherry and playing a game of chess against himself. Hope came running into the room and panted, "We found him!" She told them Marlena was with John in the laboratory downstairs, so Bo went with her while Roman stayed with Stefano and Dr. Rolf.
Bo, Hope, and Marlena returned from downstairs with John. Roman was stunned to see him alive, and Marlena explained why John didn't recognize them. Just then, Hope's cell phone rang. Bo followed her into the foyer, where she told him about Belle and Claire's kidnapping. They agreed not to tell Marlena until they knew more. Hope left, and Roman arrested Stefano for kidnapping and false imprisonment; he read Stefano his rights while Bo handcuffed him. Marlena demanded to know what Rolf had done to John, but Stefano told her this man was not the John she knew and that he would never remember her.
Meanwhile, John had removed the sharp top from a crystal decanter, and lunged to attack Stefano; Bo and Roman stopped him, then Rolf jabbed him in the neck with a needle filled with a sedative. Marlena cradled him in her arms. "What have you done to him, you monster?" she spat at Stefano.
She quietly told John to listen to the sound of her voice, giving him assurances that everything would be okay, while Roman called an ambulance and Bo handcuffed Rolf. Stefano asked Bo who their informant was, but Bo said if Stefano wouldn't talk, neither would they. Roman led Rolf out, and Stefano told Bo, "It's not over. This is merely the beginning."
1/16 Bo joins Shawn and Phillip on the docks to update them about the van. The police have tracked it to an alleyway and have backed off in order to lure the van down to the docks where they have the perimeter surrounded. Both then sternly reminds them to back off and shut up so that the police can handle the situation. When a frustrated Philip insists he will have to jump in if things go south, Shawn tells him to shut up.
Bo walks over to another spot and thinks about his run in with Rob, the landlord of the building that housed the fortune teller. Just as Bo awakens from his daydream, he notices Rob the landlord at the end of the dock giving a stack of money to a boat captain. Pulling his gun, Bo yells out, "Freeze!"
Back at the van, after Crystal gave Belle a cup of hot coffee, she threw it into Crystal's face. With Crystal screaming and blinded, Belle grabbed Claire and hot footed it toward the docks. Unfortunately, when Belle ran screaming toward the water, her path led her straight to Crystal's fellow abductor Rob, who grabbed Claire and put a gun next to her face.
Screaming for her daughter, Belle backed up into Shawn. Ever the hero, Shawn dove for the gun and struggled with the assailant. In all the confusion, Belle hit her head and was knocked into the water just as Rob ran off with Claire in his arms and Shawn chasing after him.
With Belle under water, Philip dove in after her and pulled her out. Frantically Philip began CPR, finally reviving her just before paramedics arrived. As the paramedics worked to stabilize Belle, she went into cardiac arrest while a panicked Philip stood by her as the paramedics shocked her heart with the paddles.
After a couple of tries, the paramedics backed off telling Philip that she was "gone." Since the paramedics' efforts lasted about as long as it takes to open a mailbox, Philip was less than willing to let them call her time of death. Philip fell on top of her, attempting to revive her with more CPR.
A calm Bo took note of the situation, and gently pulled Philip off of Belle, trying to get him to accept Belle's death. After a moment to collect himself, a tearful Philip approached Belle, arranging the blanket back over her chest. Since no one else was pushing Belle to breathe, she had to do it herself. Gasping for air, Belle began to cough and come to, her heart working once again. Amazed, the paramedics grabbed the gurney and rushed it toward the ambulance.
Philip and Bo were about to set off for the hospital when Bo asked him to remember that Claire was Shawn's daughter and that Philip should not be the one to tell Belle the truth about Claire right now. Right on cue a bloodied Shawn returned on to the docks to tell them he lost Claire. He then continued saying that there had been an accident that forced the cops to stop but allowed him to continue after the van. Unfortunately he lost track of the van.
Bo reassured him that the APB would help track down the van and lead them to Claire. Shawn told Bo he would drive himself to the hospital.
1/17 At the pier, Bo put out an A.P.B. on the van. Bo explained to Hope and Roman that he did not believe Stefano was behind the kidnapping. He thought the carrying out of the events was too sloppy. Hope, Bo, and Roman talked in circles about who could be behind the kidnapping.
Hope was surprised to find out that nobody had told Marlena about the kidnapping. Bo explained that Marlena had too much going, and that was why she hadn't been told. Bo received a call; the van had been found abandoned.
Shawn and Chloe arrived at the pier. Bo told Shawn about the latest developments. Bo told his son to retrace the events as they happened, this might help him to remember something. Bo and Hope left to go to the hospital.
Bo and Hope arrived at the hospital. When alone with John, Bo asked John for help with something. John said he would help but wanted something in return. Bo joined Hope and Marlena in the hall. They told Marlena about Belle's injury and the kidnapping.
Shawn arrived at the pub to speak Hope, Bo, and Roman. He described the tattoo to them. Roman showed him a picture of the medallion. Shawn recognized it. It was the same as the tattoo. Shawn borrowed the picture so that he could research it on the internet.
1/18 Bo met with E.J. on the pier to tell him about Belle and Claire's kidnapping; Bo's theory was that, for once, the DiMeras had nothing to do with it. To be sure, he asked if E.J. knew who C.B. DiMera was, if he recognized the kidnappers' pictures, or if the symbol from the old photograph of John meant anything to the DiMeras. E.J. said he knew nothing about any of it. Bo also wanted to make sure E.J. hadn't had a change of heart since turning Stefano in. E.J. said he'd made his decision, and now would have to live with the consequences.
Bo seemed to think that everything that had happened to date from E.J.'s turning in Stefano, John's return, possibly even Belle and Claire's kidnapping had been a smokescreen for something bigger Stefano might have in the works. E.J. assured him it was not; he had turned his father over to convince Samantha and himself that he was a better man than Stefano. Then Roman called Bo's cell phone and told him they'd found some new evidence, so Bo left.
Sami and the twins were having lunch with Hope at the Brady Pub. Sami commiserated with her about Claire being missing. Hope tried to convince her to do whatever it took to get Lucas out of jail, and was worried that Sami had started relying on E.J. too much. Sami tried to assure her that it was just for help with the babies and nothing more. Hope urged her not to trust him, and to please tell Roman how afraid she was so he could protect her. Sami confided she had considered taking E.J. up on his offer to take the twins and just disappear together.
Hope, utterly floored, asked if she'd completely lost her mind. Sami said all that mattered to her was that her babies were safe, and she knew E.J. would never hurt them, but Hope suggested E.J. was just playing on her fears so that she'd trust him. When Sami said it was just too damn bad if her family didn't understand her need for her children's safety, Hope told her that had likely been E.J.'s plan all along, to isolate her from her family and make her dependent on him and Sami was falling right into his trap. Sami angrily said she didn't trust E.J., he was Johnny's father and that was it.
Later, Bo came in and asked Hope what Elvis was doing there. She didn't know, but was worried about how much Sami was relying on him. He showed her what they'd found at the crime scene: a bottle of Claire's medication, purchased three weeks before in Canada by Crystal Miller. Bo said normal kidnappers wouldn't have made sure to have their victims' medicine, so maybe they really were trying to protect Belle and Claire from something or someone.
1/21 Marlena told Bo and Hope about John's visit with Belle, but they questioned whether or not Marlena should really trust John so soon. Roman told John that he knew from personal experience, having been a captor of Stefano, that it would be a long time before he would be free of his hold, and to stop trying to convince Marlena that he was nearing a breakthrough. John had flashbacks of his mind control sessions then used scissors that he stole from Belle's room to try to free himself of his restraints.
Hope cautioned Marlena that the John of today was not the man she married, and to be careful. John broke free of his restraints and put Marlena and Hope in harm's way, but then had another flashback of his brainwashing sessions. It immobilized him and he was once again restrained.
Marlena told John that no matter what that she knew he could never hurt her, as he loves her. Marlena acknowledged to Bo and Hope that she knew that John could not be trusted yet, but she knew she could get him to remember their life together.
1/22 Outside John's hospital room, Marlena told Hope she knew a great deal about the human brain and about being held captive by Stefano, and so she could forgive John for saying things he didn't mean. "That isn't John in there," she said. She acknowledged it might take a long time to get him back, but vowed she would never stop fighting for him.
Meanwhile, John dreamed of the procedures Stefano and Rolf put him through, and whispered "Doc" in his sleep. Later, Marlena admitted to Hope that John could either be playing her or having a breakthrough, but she intended to find out which.
A sleeping John remembered more of his captivity in Rolf's laboratory. In the memory, John was strapped to a chair wearing goggles while a screen displayed rapidly moving images. As John shook uncontrollably, Stefano told him they were extracting all of his memories, his personality, relationships, emotions, and even cognitive thought, so that he would be a clean slate.
The screen flashed the word "DELETED," then John seemed to fall unconscious. Stefano shouted "John Black!" and clapped his hands in John's face, but John did not respond. This pleased Stefano, who taunted John for not being able to think now. Stefano bent and retrieved a small computer disc from the machinery. He told John, "A man's entire life, everything he knew, everything he remembered has been extracted from his brain, and placed on this single, little disc," and then left the lab.
Back in the present, John sat bolt upright in his hospital bed and shouted, "Don't take it!" Hope and Marlena rushed in to see what had happened, but John couldn't remember what he'd been dreaming about. Marlena acknowledged that the drugs could be affecting these memories as well.
When Dr. Carrington arrived, Marlena privately stressed to him the importance of getting John into therapy before he lost all of his memories. Dr. Carrington said John needed to be emotionally stabilized first, so Marlena asked him to at least lower the dosages of the medications. The doctor all but refused.
Meanwhile, Hope tried to help John remember his dreams. She asked him to close his eyes and let his thoughts drift, and asked what he recalled. He replied, "[that] I don't like you, or trust you." Roman told Hope and Marlena they had to be extremely careful, because they had no way of knowing what Stefano had done to John's brain.
Marlena left in tears, telling Hope and Roman she needed to be alone, but thought to herself that if she must, she'd take matters into her own hands to bring about a breakthrough.
1/23 At the hospital, Bo and Hope worried about Claire. When Bo assured her they would stick together, Hope told him that she was ready to get back in the game. She explained that she wanted to rejoin the force full time. Surprised, Bo asked her if she was ready to go back to work and leave their daughter at home. Hope responded that she wanted to improve the world by ridding it of Stefano. When Hope began to wonder about her new partner, Bo appeared to get jealous. Despite all that was going on in their lives, the two were able to laugh about his jealousies.
After a little bit of teasing, Bo told her that she was great at police work and that she should start back if she wanted to return. As the two began to cuddle, a wild-eyed Billie showed up and begged for Bo's help with Chelsea. After Hope excused herself to go check on Marlena, Billie filled Bo in on all the latest news, including the fact that she was being investigated for covering up Ford's disappearance and Chelsea's involvement.
Bo admitted that Chelsea had been acting strangely at Christmas, talking about parents being separated from their children during the holidays. He also told Billie that Chelsea had been acting paranoid and that he hadn't seen her act that way for a couple of years. Billie and Bo agreed that whatever was going on could not be a good thing.
Marlena rushed to John's bedside and tried to talk to him. Hope stopped by to check on John and when Marlena updated her on John's care, a suspicious Hope asked Marlena what she was planning. Marlena played innocent, telling Hope that she would just have to get through to John. Hope said she trusted Marlena's judgment and left.
1/24 Bo was talking to Detective Sullivan. The detective told Bo he did not believe the stories about Ford's disappearances because they matched too well. Bo agreed that the stories seemed rehearsed. Sullivan thought Chelsea was behind the stories being told, since she ruined Ford's reputation by calling him a rapist. He told Bo that Billie was being accused of looking the other way, a murder conspiracy, and a cover up. Bo asked Detective Sullivan if he could see the evidence that has been collected. Bo decided to look into the situation.
Chelsea was happy to see her father when he arrived at the PD. She asked him about Claire. Bo told her he was there as a cop and wanted to discuss Ford. Chelsea said she told Detective Sullivan all she knew. Bo was skeptical. He wanted his daughter to open up about what she knew. He needed answers, not game playing. He told Chelsea that the truth was more important than loyalty.
Bo said that Ford's parents were worried about him, and Billie could get into a lot of trouble. Bo wanted Chelsea to do the right thing and tell the truth. Bo said he thought she had changed, but she was now putting Billie and others at risk. He reminded her that she nearly destroyed his marriage and their family. Chelsea said she had changed and was only doing what she felt was the right thing. Chelsea told her dad she loved him and thanked him for stopping by. With that, Bo told her he loved her, and left.
1/28 Roman and Abe informed Bo and Hope of Shawn's run-in with one of Crystal's men and said Shawn had to stop taking things into his own hands, or his career would be over. Abe and Roman welcomed Hope back to the force and then questioned Crystal's man about Crystal using another name, that of Desiree Wilson.
Later, Bo and Hope visited Belle in the hospital with Philip, Shawn, and Chloe and told them that Crystal, a.k.a. Desiree Wilson, had been seen getting off a plane in Ireland with a little girl, and they were heading off to investigate. Philip rushed to get his jet ready to join them, even though Bo and Hope had told them all to let the police handle matters.
1/29 Down at the Salem Police Station, Abe informed Bo and Hope that Interpol was tracking Crystal's movements. Abe also told them that if Interpol moved in too soon, they might endanger Brady. Bo and Hope agreed and were about to leave when Abe reminded Hope that she would need to get a physical before she could officially rejoin the force. Hope said she would do it immediately to get it out of the way. After a little pushing, Abe convinced Bo to get his yearly physical as well.
Down the hallway, Kayla met up with Hope in order to give her a physical. When Bo mentioned he needed his as well, he made sure to let Kayla know he did not want his sister to perform the physical. As the two laughed about how neither wanted to do that, Lexie showed up and offered her services. Bo went to his treatment bay with Lexie, and Hope followed Kayla behind the next curtain.
Hope started to tell Kayla about her trip to Ireland, but she noticed that Kayla was obviously preoccupied. Kayla admitted she was worried about Steve. When Hope pressed further, Kayla said that the college rapist had raped Stephanie and that she feared what Steve would do.
Behind the next curtain, Lexie took Bo's blood pressure while he congratulated her for being reinstated as a doctor at the hospital. Lexie tried to suppress a smile as she told Bo that she had a secret. A happy Lexie informed Bo that her name had been submitted as a candidate for chief of staff. As Lexie prepared to draw blood for tests, Bo congratulated her again and told her that she was the perfect person for the job.
Later, Hope, Bo, Kayla, and Lexie met up again, and Kayla and Lexie agreed that their patients both looked pretty good. Steve ambled over and offered his assistance to Bo and Hope. Noting Kayla's worried face, Steve told her that he was okay. Not fooled, Kayla asked him about his obviously injured hand. Steve admitted that he had gone a round with a wall. Kayla took Steve aside and examined his hand. Kayla noted that the hand was not broken, but she also told him that she was worried about him. Steve told her not to worry because he would not let anything else hurt their family. "Neither will I," said Kayla.
Back out in the hallway, Abe arrived to inform Hope that she had just been officially reinstated, pending the outcome of the blood results of her physical. Abe then cautioned them that they had no jurisdiction in Ireland and that they had to work with local police. After Bo made an ill-advised joke to Hope, calling her "Detective Fancy Face," the two were off for Ireland.
1/30 Bo and Hope were driving a car in Ireland, looking for the town of New Ross. Hope had some difficulty with the map, and Bo had some difficulty with the car. The two switched places. After Bo got them headed in the right direction, he stared lovingly at Hope and remembered moments from their past. He thought about when they had met, the southern plantation, their wedding, the balloon ride, and the time they had skinny-dipped in the island water hole.
"How close are we?" said Hope. Smiling, Bo told her, "Very close." After a brief stop to show Claire's photo to some locals, Bo returned to the car and told Hope that someone had spotted Claire with a woman at the bed and breakfast up the street.
Downstairs, Bo and Hope arrived at the bed and breakfast. Bo looked around while Hope took a phone call from Shawn. Unaware that Shawn had just landed in Ireland, Hope filled him in on the search and let him know what town Claire had been spotted in. Just as Hope was hanging up on the call, the two men who had met John and Marlena entered the lobby and asked if they could help. Bo asked the men if they had seen Crystal. Right then, Crystal appeared downstairs and told Bo and Hope that they were too late.
Dvd #71B 1/31 At the Irish bed and breakfast, Marlena, John, Bo, and Hope were blown away when they stumbled upon Colleen Brady. Colleen admitted she had been behind Claire's kidnapping. Secretly gripping the knife, John realized Colleen was his target.
2/1 At the bed and breakfast in Ireland, Bo, Hope, John, Marlena, Shawn, Belle, Philip, and Chloe were gathered in Colleen Brady's room. No one could believe she was really who she claimed to be, but Colleen was firm. She suggested they look into her eyes and compare them to the photographs they'd seen, because, she said, "the eyes don't change." She remarked how pleased she'd been to learn that Samantha resembled her younger self. Bo wanted to know what her game was. Colleen admitted there had been deception, but it was no game. Marlena told her they'd read the letters between Colleen and Santo, and they knew how Colleen had supposedly died. Colleen declared that her and Santo's love had been deep and strong, but it had also torn her apart. She had been willing to give up everything for Santo, but he had lied to her; he had already been married.
By sleeping with Santo, she had disgraced the convent, the church, and God, thus she had wanted everyone to think she had jumped to her death, even though suicide was a mortal sin. Colleen explained that she had left her nun's habit on the cliff, but instead of jumping, she'd run and hidden, so that Santo could go back to his wife and son. Colleen said she'd heard that Santo had never smiled after that. She herself had never been able to love another man, nor had she ever married. Santo's son, Stefano, had become consumed with hatred for all the Bradys because he'd always blamed Colleen for destroying Santo's life. However, Colleen insisted that she'd actually given Santo back his life; she'd faked her death so Santo could honor his wedding vows.
Belle and Chloe said they believed the old woman's story, but Bo and Philip remained skeptical. Colleen was outraged at being thought a liar. Hope asked Colleen where she had gone after faking her death. Colleen said at first she had just moved to another part of Ireland, changed her name, and worked as a seamstress, but she had continued to fear being discovered, so she'd moved to South America. There, through years of working long hours, she'd become successful as a dressmaker and designer, and discovered that she also had a knack for business.
As she'd gained financial success, she'd also gained the ability to track down her relatives, but she'd only recently learned of her family in Salem. When she had heard that Stefano still harbored such hatred for the Bradys and had inflicted so much pain on them because of it, she had decided to take responsibility. She said Stefano had become an evil man in part because she had broken Santo's heart. She said she had to keep him from hurting anyone else and asked the forgiveness of everyone present for what she had done. "I took something of yours," she confessed then called for Crystal, who instantly appeared in the doorway, followed by Claire.
"Mommy, Daddy!" the little girl cried as she ran to Belle and Shawn. Belle scooped her daughter up in her arms, and Hope, Bo, and Marlena immediately surrounded the newly reunited family as everyone tried to hug Claire at once. They all exclaimed over the girl, told her how much they loved her and had missed her, and "fought" over who got to hold her next.
Meanwhile, John had backed into a corner and surreptitiously produced a knife, while staring intently at an unaware Colleen. Marlena noticed him studying the woman, so she edged over to him and excitedly reminded him that Claire was his granddaughter. "Oh, that's right, a granddaughter," he said without emotion, as he slid the knife back into his coat sleeve.
Bo confronted Colleen and demanded an explanation. He needed to know why she would kidnap an innocent little girl and put the child's family through hell. Colleen said she'd done it out of love and because she'd seen how dangerous Stefano had become. She had just been trying to protect her family "and all who come from Salem," including Brady Black. A stunned Chloe demanded to know if Colleen had been behind Brady's disappearance.
Colleen admitted Crystal and Rob had been in Austria, but Brady had disappeared before they had been able to take him to Ireland. She said she didn't know where he was and wondered if Chloe did. Chloe hesitated for a moment before saying she did not, then retreated in tears. Marlena reminded John that the missing Brady was his son, but John was unmoved.
Bo and Hope again pressed Colleen to tell them why she'd felt she had to kidnap Belle, Claire, and Brady. "For safekeeping." Colleen said with a sigh. "That's all I'm after sayin' for now."
2/4 Kayla and Steve arrived in Ireland with Shawn Sr. to prepare him for his surprise reunion. Her and Steve privately commiserate that unfortunately this isn’t the only reason they had to come to Ireland.
Bo complained to Hope of soreness in his back. He told Hope that he didn't know whether or not he could forgive Colleen for lying to everyone, especially Shawn Sr., about her death, because Bo felt everyone had suffered too much as a result.
Steve and Kayla told Bo and Hope that Stefano was in a catatonic state and that no one knew exactly why. He had massive stroke symptoms but the tests did not support that diagnosis. They went on to explain that Stefano had been transferred to a long-term care facility for for now, he is out of action.
Shawn Sr. received the shock of his life as family and friends witnessed him reunite with his older sister, Colleen. He thought she died over 50 years before and that he had been partly to blame for her untimely supposed "death."
Colleen explained that she didn't jump off the cliff that night, but ran away and went into hiding. She told her brother that she felt terrible that she never told him she was alive, but did so to protect the family. She confessed she had lived with that guilt every day. Bo told Aunt Colleen that she was wrong for causing his father so much pain. The others thought it was the only way that she could make Stefano suffer as she had, but unfortunately Stefano's revenge was more evil than she could have ever imagined. Shawn told Colleen that he forgave her.
Kayla tells Colleen about Stefano being in a catatonic state. Colleen admits she paid a heavy price for the choices she made, living without her family. As Kayla, Steve, Bo and Hope leave to go downstairs, John asks for time alone with Colleen. Marlena declares that no way is she leaving him alone with her. She is unaware that he is hiding a knife, waiting for his opportunity to kill her. John pretended to want to speak with Marlena alone. He turned and pushed her into the door and knocked her unconscious. John then moved in for the kill to a surprised and confused Colleen.
Privately later on, Steve and Kayla told Bo that wanted to talk to him alone as they didn’t want to talk to him in front of Hope. He is curious what is going on and Steve warns him that it isn’t good news.
2/5 With Marlena knocked unconscious on the floor, John gripped a knife in his hand and advanced toward Colleen. A terrified Colleen asked, "What are you planning to do, John?" John explained that he was sent to kill her, and if he did not do that, he would never have any peace. Colleen countered that if he killed her, then he would definitely never find peace. When Colleen suggested that John would condemn himself by killing her, John laughed and told her that he was already condemned. Colleen then changed tactics and told John that he was not a killer by nature. Disagreeing with her, John stated that he was designed to kill her.
Behind him, a groggy Marlena stirred as Colleen told John that she could see he was conflicted. As John raised his knife, Marlena cried out, "John!" Unfazed, John turned to Marlena and told her, "You can close your eyes or you can watch this if you want." John explained that he had no choice, but Marlena disagreed. With his eyes narrowing, John told Colleen that from what he had heard, he was a good killer.
Suddenly John made a move on Colleen with the knife, but a scared Marlena grabbed his legs, trying to keep him from reaching Colleen. A defiant Colleen looked into John's eyes and told him that she was ready to die, but that she would like some last words. Without hesitation, Colleen yelled that if he killed her, he would be killing his own mother. John flinched, then bent over and whispered to Colleen, "I don't believe you."
Colleen insisted and explained that she could prove her story. Colleen grabbed the medallion around her neck and showed it to them. Though John did not recognize it, Marlena immediately remembered the medallion. Marlena pulled out the picture she had found in John's jacket pocket the night of his accident and showed John that it was the same medallion from the picture. A tired Colleen told them that John was the baby in the picture and that he was sitting on her lap.
"You knew I was coming," John said. Colleen explained that she knew when he walked in the door that she saw Stefano's hardness in John's eyes, and not the look of the boy she once knew. As John's inner struggle became more obvious with his increased trembling, Marlena tried to calm him by reminding him that Stefano was no longer a problem, and would spend the rest of his days in a coma. "I'm good with that," John muttered. John retreated a bit with the knife and Marlena stepped forward and asked Colleen for details. Colleen explained that shortly after she faked her death, she learned that she was carrying Santo's child. Afraid, Colleen left for Argentina and stayed at a convent.
After her son was born, she named him Ryan and they continued to live at the convent for his first two years, until the mother superior asked them to leave for an environment better suited to raising a boy. Struggling to raise Ryan, Colleen left him at an orphanage with the understanding that she could visit every Sunday. In exchange for his room and board, Colleen acted as the seamstress for the orphanage.
Colleen further explained that she saved money working as a seamstress elsewhere and just when she had saved enough money to pull Ryan out of the orphanage, her hand was injured in a sewing machine accident. With tetanus setting in and making her delirious, she was sent to the hospital for two months to recuperate. After Colleen was well enough to leave the hospital, she returned to the orphanage to find that Ryan was no longer there.
Upon hearing this, John aggressively made motions toward Colleen, but he still held back from attacking her. Undeterred, Colleen further explained that after years of searching for her son she finally learned that he had been adopted by the Alamains and was named John Black.
"So Santo DiMera is my father?" John asked. "Of course. I have only been with one man me whole life. That was Santo," Colleen responded. Trying to point out Stefano's ignorance, Colleen explained that if Stefano had known John was his half-brother, he never would have sent John to kill Colleen.
According to Colleen, Stefano learned that she was alive about a year earlier and had become obsessed with tracking her down. Colleen explained that her fear meant she could not contact her family in order to protect them. Marlena told them she thought the reunion was fate. Colleen said it was God.
Upon hearing this, John quickly pressed his knife against Colleen's throat. Again Marlena tried to calm him. Quietly, Colleen told John that if he killed her then he would destroy whatever was left of himself. John paused, closed his eyes, and walked out of the room. Worried, Marlena ran out after him.
Downstairs in the bed and breakfast, Steve told Bo that there was another reason he and Kayla had visited. Kayla explained that the test results for his physical had come back, and that they were very troubling. Kayla informed him that he needed to have more tests as soon as possible back home in Salem.
Hope returned and the group of three grew very quiet. Trying to cover the awkward silence, Bo explained they were discussing Shawn Sr.'s reunion with Colleen and her surprises. The group then switched to talk about Claire and the reunion. As Steve said it had been a pretty good day, an uncomfortable and guilty Kayla stared furiously at the cup of tea in her hands. After a quick glance at Kayla's terrible poker face, Steve began to discuss the country view outside and asked them to join him for a walk.
Bo immediately begged off telling Steve he wanted to catch up with his sister, Kayla. Steve turned to Hope and convinced her to join him outside. Once Steve and Hope had left, Bo demanded Kayla give him specifics. Kayla explained that his results were abnormal and looked very bad. Unsure, Bo argued that he had exhibited no symptoms. Kayla explained that was normal, and told him that he needed to go back home so that he could fight this and win.
Out on the porch, Steve talked about the view and as he started to make jokes about leprechauns, Hope asked him what was up with Bo. Steve tried to play coy but Hope pushed him and said that Kayla was acting strange. Steve looked her in the eyes and asked her to remember when Bo had learned that Victor was his father. "Did I give you bad advice?" Steve asked her. "No. Great," Hope answered. Then Steve asked her to trust him and to give Bo a little bit of space.
Victor called Bo and told him the news about Chelsea. Victor explained that Crawford was no longer an issue and is not going to pursue his son’s death (he had raped Stephanie). Bo was incredulous, but declined to hear any details about what Victor did to get Crawford to back off Chelsea. Bo thanked him for "whatever he did he doesn't want to know about." When Victor mentioned he needed his jet returned for Crawford, he explained that it was the least he could do for a grieving father.
Bo rushed outside to tell Hope the good news about Chelsea. Steve and Kayla were relieved to hear the news and said they were hopeful of what the news would mean for Stephanie. Kayla then not-so-subtly suggested that Bo and Hope leave for Salem immediately in order to comfort Chelsea. Steve jumped in and said that now that Claire was found, everything was under control.
Bo was quick to agree to leave but when Kayla offered to call the airlines for them, Bo had to make a face at Kayla to back off. Hope was clearly not fooled by any of the three and asked, "You really are trying to get rid of us, aren't you?" Before anyone could answer, Shawn joined them on the porch, quickly followed by a frantic Marlena. "John has run off," Marlena gasped.
2/6 Downstairs, Marlena, Hope, Kayla, Steve, and Bo returned from looking for John, and joined Belle, Claire, and Shawn in the pub. Marlena told the shocked group that John had knocked her out and tried to kill Colleen. She said the only thing that had stopped him was Colleen's admission that she was John's mother. Bo wondered if Colleen was lying to protect herself, but Marlena told them Colleen was wearing the same medallion as in the old photograph of John and his mother. "Colleen's my grandmother," Belle said incredulously.
Marlena worried that John might be a "walking time bomb" since his mission had failed. Philip and Chloe came downstairs just as Bo, Steve, and Shawn were leaving to continue their search for John. Philip offered to come along, as did Hope, but Bo told her it was too dangerous. Besides, he said he needed her there in case John returned to complete his mission.
Marlena told Colleen's story to the other women. "John's a Brady and a DiMera?" Chloe asked in amazement. Belle, clearly appalled, realized Stefano was her uncle. Marlena admitted that Stefano might have had programmed John to harm himself if his mission failed. Belle volunteered to stay with Colleen, her newly discovered grandmother. Kayla asked what Marlena thought John would do once the others found him.
"Resist with everything he's got," Marlena replied grimly. She agreed with Chloe that the implications were staggering, because it meant that Colleen was Brady's grandmother as well, and Stefano is his uncle. Chloe wondered if Stefano could be behind Brady's kidnapping. Marlena said Colleen didn't think so, and Marlena believed her.
Hope realized Grandpa Shawn didn't know about Colleen being John's mother, and offered to tell him before he saw his sister again. As she jumped up from her stool, she nearly fell, but brushed it off as not having eaten since breakfast.
In the woods, John was on his knees with his knife pressed against his neck. Suddenly Bo shouted, "John! Don't!" He ran up and tried to convince John everything would be okay. With the knife against his throat, John calmly replied, "Save your breath. I know what I have to do."
Bo tried to get John to hand over the knife and return with him to the pub. John said he had let his emotions get in the way and failed his mission, so there was nothing to live for. Bo told him it only proved he was human, not Stefano's pawn-and John had plenty to live for. John finally turned to look at Bo, and for the first time, the pain was evident in his eyes. "What makes you think I want to?" he asked, then started to slash his own throat. Bo lunged forward and tried to wrest the knife from him, but John grabbed Bo in a death grip, as if to snap his neck.
John's face was impassive as the two men struggled. Bo finally convinced John that he wasn't the enemy, and John let go, leaving the knife in Bo's hand. John dropped to his knees and closed his eyes. "Kill me," he rasped. Bo refused, and pointed out that John hadn't been able to kill him-or Colleen. Bo asked if Stefano had programmed John to kill himself if he failed. John said he didn't remember anything about his life, and he wasn't able to feel anything for his wife or his children. He said when he'd found out his target was his mother, he could have killed her, but he chose not to.
Bo said that was important, and told John what good friends they were, even though John didn't remember. John reminded him that he didn't remember anything, and coldly repeated that he didn't feel anything for "that woman they call Doc [or] her daughter Belle." Bo told John he had a good life, and his family loved him and wanted him back and it sure beat a life on the run. John asked if he was free to go. Bo said if John wanted to leave, he couldn't stop him. It was John's choice whether he left or stayed.
Bo and John returned to the pub. Bo pulled Marlena and John aside. John casually lit a cigar as Bo told Marlena he'd found John with a knife pressed against his throat. A concerned Marlena wanted to know if Stefano had programmed John to commit suicide if his mission failed. John said it didn't matter, since Bo had stopped him.
Marlena asked how Bo had done so, and Bo said he'd just reminded John of his life and who he was. John coolly said he was filthy rich, and now that he was a DiMera he could probably get his hands on some of their money too. John then demanded a drink. Marlena said John had a lot more to live for than money.
Bo saw Hope come downstairs and excused himself. Looking back at John, Bo said, "He is messed up." Hope said the Blacks would get their lives back, and he agreed true love could help them do that. Bo took a drink to John. John immediately drank it and asked for another. When Bo refused, John argued, "It's not every day you come this close to killing your own mother."
Marlena asked if John would allow her to hypnotize him when they returned to Salem. He asked why he should agree to that. She said if he didn't, she'd have Bo arrest him, and then he'd never get well because he'd be in jail. He asked what if he didn't want to get well. Marlena asked him if he knew what he did want, and he admitted he didn't know. "That's why you need me," she concluded.
Steve was in the woods when Kayla called him to tell him John had been found. He wanted to make sure they talked to Bo and Hope right away, so they could get home to get their tests scheduled. Steve and Kayla discussed how worried they were about how Hope would take the news. Kayla said it had been difficult enough to tell Bo. "How do you tell someone you love they could be dying?" Steve asked.
Shawn and Philip emerged from the trees just then and overheard, but Steve covered, saying it was a patient of Kayla's. He told them John had been found, and they all returned to the pub. Steve pulled Kayla aside and asked if she'd had a chance to talk to Hope. Hope winced in pain after hugging Shawn. She said her back was hurting, as was Bo's, but blamed it on the mattresses.
She then asked Shawn if there was any chance he and Belle would get back together. Shawn said they had a lot to work through first. Hope asked how he felt about Belle. He admitted he didn't know, but after hearing Colleen's stories, he realized how different all the Bradys' lives would have been if Colleen and Santo could have been together. He now knew that when two people loved each other, they should move heaven and earth to make it happen.
Upstairs, Shawn Sr. told Colleen that Hope had told him about John. Colleen asked if Shawn hated her for keeping that from him too. He said he could never hate her, and they agreed they had to make up for all the years they'd lost. He told her that Caroline would be thrilled to have her come live with them. Colleen said she wouldn't be going anywhere, but she was glad he was there with her for the end. "The end of what?" asked Shawn.
She replied, "Me life, Shawny. I'm dying." Shawn refused to believe it, but Colleen said she'd known for a while. She explained that was why she'd stepped up her efforts to make sure everyone was safe. Shawn said there must be something they could do, but Colleen said all she wanted was her family, "one last time."
Hope noticed Belle was wearing Colleen's medallion, and Belle told her Colleen had given it to her. As Bo sat down near them, he groaned in pain. He said his back was hurting from getting the knife away from John. Steve and Kayla said they needed to talk to Hope and Bo privately, making an excuse about finalizing travel arrangements. Before they had a chance to talk, Shawn Sr. appeared on the stairs and announced that Colleen needed to see everyone in her room right away.
2/7 Colleen's family gathered around her bedside. Bo told his aunt not to give up. Colleen told her family that everything she did was to keep them safe and to see her brother one more time. Everybody felt it would be cruel if Colleen died after they'd just found her again. Colleen said God was not cruel and everybody should trust God. She felt people reaped what they sowed.
John thought if that was true, Colleen was in a lot of trouble. Shawn Sr. was extremely angered by John's actions and comments. Colleen felt that John hated her. John told Colleen that he did not care enough about her to hate her, but he was disappointed that he did not kill her when he had the chance. John felt that what Colleen did to her family was unforgivable, but since she was dying everybody was acting as if she were a saint. John did not think Colleen deserved forgiveness.
Colleen said John did not remember love and he was not like his father. However, Colleen hoped one day John could become like his father. Colleen said Santo was a very loving man, and he loved Colleen very deeply. Colleen faked her death so that Santo would not divorce his wife. Stefano blamed Colleen for ruining his father's life and decided to punish the Bradys.
Colleen spoke to each member of her family and offered them advice. She told Belle and Shawn that they were the family's future. She told Bo he had Brady spirit. She told Hope to stand by her man. She wanted her family to take care of her brother.
Colleen asked to be alone with her brother and son. Belle gave John the medallion she had received from Colleen. She asked John to give it to Sami. When nobody was looking, John threw it in the trashcan. Marlena retrieved it and put it in her pocket. Colleen told her brother goodbye.
Then she asked her son if she could hold him one last time. John reluctantly relented. Colleen then asked John to hold her. He obliged. Marlena went to the hall and asked everybody to come back into Colleen's room. Colleen died in John's arms. Downstairs Shawn Sr. was inconsolable.
2/8 In the woods near the bed and breakfast, Bo admitted it was hard not knowing what was going on with his health. Steve said he doubted Lexie would have sent Steve and Kayla to Ireland if she hadn't had cause for concern. Bo said he wanted to stay positive, then appeared to get very dizzy. Steve helped him to sit on a tree stump. Bo insisted he was fine, but he was worried about what Hope would have to go through. Steve thought Bo should tell her, but Bo said they should pretend everything was all right for now.
Hope came downstairs and told Kayla she felt like Kayla, Steve, and Bo were keeping something from her. Kayla started to explain, but was interrupted by Steve and Bo returning from outside, and by Shawn coming downstairs. Shawn told the group about Colleen's wishes, and said they'd be having the memorial soon, after Shawn Sr. had some time alone. He also remarked how little comfort John would be to Shawn Sr., even if John were his nephew.
The group gathered in the woods for Colleen's memorial. Marlena asked Shawn Sr. if he'd like to begin by saying a few words. He said he didn't think he could manage it, and Kayla tried to comfort him. Marlena asked John to speak, but he flatly refused. She then said he should be the one to hold his mother's ashes, which he finally but churlishly agreed to. Bo then announced he would say a few words. "Fan-tastic! Let's get on with it," John said rudely.
The others tried to ignore him as Bo began to speak. He delivered a moving eulogy about Colleen, her love for Santo, and how love could overcome even the most insurmountable obstacles. "In the end," he said, his voice breaking, "true love survives above all." John removed the lid from the urn and handed it to Shawn Sr. Shawn Sr. reached in and took a handful of Colleen's ashes, which he then released into the light breeze. He handed the urn to Kayla, who repeated her father's actions. And so it went, from Kayla to Bo, then Hope, Shawn, Belle, and Marlena.
As Colleen's family silently scattered her ashes in the woods behind the home where she'd lived out her final years, they seemed to share collective memories, gleaned from the couple's letters, of Colleen and Santo's beautiful yet poignant love story. Finally, Marlena passed the urn to John. His back to the group, he poured a handful of ashes into his palm and briefly studied them as they began to fall through his trembling fingers.
He turned his hand over and let the remainder drop, as the group began silently filing out of the clearing. John poured more of the ashes into his hand and watched again as they slid through his fingers. Marlena paused as if to speak to him, then reconsidered. She left him there, alone in the woods, and he blew the last of his mother's ashes from his hand into the wind.
A woman appeared in the front window on the outside of the pub. When Steve turned and saw her, he froze like he recognised her and she turn and fled. He ran outside, but there was no sign of the woman.
Alone in the woods again, John saw what appeared to be the ghosts of Colleen and Santo, young again. The otherworldly Santo took both of Colleen's ethereal hands in his and pulled her close. Santo gently touched Colleen's face as he kissed her lovingly. Their figures slowly vanished as John watched, and a faint glimmer of light seemed to return to his eyes.
2/11 After Colleen's memorial service, the Black and Brady families boarded John's jet to return to Salem. Marlena shared John's experience with Shawn Sr., Bo, and Hope. She told them that perhaps Colleen and Santo's spirits were free at last and at rest.
Bo attempted to tell Hope about his medical condition but had difficulty finding the right words. Bo explained to Hope that he had something to tell her but that he did not have all the facts. He asked her to trust their love and her faith in him. Hope agreed, but she made Bo promise to tell her if she felt the need to know the truth about his secret sooner.
2/12 At the park, Victor walked up to the bed of tulips and picked one. Smiling, Caroline sidled up next to him to say hello. Caroline teased Victor about the softer side of him that could talk about flowers. Smirking, Victor reminded Caroline that a soft side to someone did not mean they were weak in business. Growing thoughtful, Caroline reminded Victor that he'd always had a soft side for their son, Bo. Victor kidded, "I try not to let that show too often."
Victor told Caroline that he was glad Bo had been raised by two good people and that he admired the job Shawn Sr. did as a father. The two talked briefly about Colleen being alive, but a somber Caroline told Victor that in Shawn Sr.'s last phone call, he'd sounded troubled. As Victor gave Caroline the tulip he'd picked, a happy looking Chelsea entered the park. After a little bit of chit-chat, Chelsea rather abruptly asked them how they had ended up having Bo. At first, Caroline was reluctant to tell Chelsea, but Victor gently pushed her into telling the story.
Caroline explained that she, Victor, and Shawn Sr. had grown up together. Smiling, Caroline admitted that she'd been in love with Victor back then, but when Victor had moved to Greece to learn the family business, she'd grown closer to Shawn. Caroline's voice sounded sad as she told the story of how she had grown apart from Shawn Sr. when he had been traveling a lot for work and how the stress of raising three kids had made her feel alone.
Caroline told Chelsea that when Victor had returned to Salem, they'd had a moment's indiscretion. Victor was quick to inform Chelsea that although Caroline regretted what had happened, neither he nor Caroline regretted the result, which was Bo. Caroline explained how she had told Victor to go away and that she had kept the secret until one fateful day when Bo had almost killed Victor. Many years before, Bo had been investigating a case and, driven to the edge, had pulled a gun on Victor.
Caroline explained that in the heat of the moment, she'd yelled out for Bo to stop because Victor was his father.
With the story told to their granddaughter, Caroline told Victor that both he and Shawn would always be Bo's fathers. When Chelsea asked why Shawn had stayed, Caroline said it was because Shawn Sr. loved her. Victor added, "And because he is a forgiving and honorable man."
John's jet was still flying home over the Atlantic Ocean. On board, a tired Shawn Sr. slept rather fitfully while a worried Kayla fretted about her father's health.
Down the aisle, Marlena asked John to check with the pilot. When John explained in scientific terms what turbulence was caused by, Marlena teased him about his selective memory. Since John looked confused, Marlena explained that he had once been a pilot. "Oh," John responded.
While Bo, Hope, and Marlena seemed optimistic about the turbulence, John decided to go up to the cockpit and check.
In the cockpit, the pilot complained to the copilot that the controls felt mushy. John entered and asked the pilot to fly under the weather, but the pilot explained that weather might not be the problem. When John cocked his eyebrow in a questioning glance, the pilot explained that though the instruments were working, the plane was getting progressively harder to fly. "Do your best. You have my family back there," John said before catching himself and looking stunned by what he had just said.
After John tested the controls himself and agreed with the pilot, the three agreed the best course of action was to land in Iceland for repairs. However, when they tried to radio the tower, the radio was no longer working, and there was no way to communicate with the airport.
Back in the cabin of the plane, Hope and Marlena were worried about how pale Bo looked. When Hope inquired about his sore back, a curious Marlena asked him what was wrong. Bo blew off Marlena's question, but when Hope got up to go check on Claire, Bo admitted to her that he was stressed about some bad news he needed to tell Hope. Marlena pushed Bo to explain, but Bo would only say that he would tell her later, after he talked to Hope.
After checking on Claire, Hope sat down with Steve and Kayla and begged them to tell her what Bo's secret was about. Steve played dumb and Kayla asked Hope what Bo had told her so far. "To trust him," Hope whispered. Kayla told Hope that everything would be all right. Satisfied, Hope returned to Bo. However, a worried Steve asked Kayla why she would say that when they were not sure that everything with Bo would be fine. Kayla explained that she'd said that because she hoped it would be fine.
As the cabin grew colder and more stressed, John asked to borrow Marlena's cell phone. When Hope reminded John that he should not use a cell phone on a flight, John retorted, "I can do anything I want. It's my jet." When Bo questioned whether it would interfere with the radio, John quipped, "I sincerely doubt that."
After ducking into the cockpit and confirming that the cell phone had no reception, John returned to the cabin and asked the group whether anyone had a cell phone with reception. None of the cell phones on board had any reception. As everyone in the cabin grew tense, John explained that the radio was out, but the plane was fine. However, when the copilot leaned into the cabin to tell John they were losing cabin pressure, the group was no longer fooled.
John returned to the cockpit and, together with the pilot and copilot, determined that the bump from before was probably not turbulence but instead was something knocking out the electrical systems. The group attempted to cut fuel to the engines to force a descent, but that didn't work. Steve ducked into the cockpit and overheard the three discuss the possibility of dumping the fuel and causing a crash.
Steve passionately argued with John to think of his family in the back, since not everyone would survive the crash. Unmoved, John ordered the fuel dumped. However, nothing happened. With no way to descend, John cautioned Steve to tell everyone that the plane was about to get a whole lot colder.
2/13 In the cockpit of John's plane, high above the North Atlantic, John and Steve argued about dumping the fuel. Despite the fact that it would likely cause the plan to crash and kill them all, John ordered the pilot to dump the fuel, over Steve's protests but nothing happened. "Well, Dead Eye," John said to Steve, "why don't you go on back there and give everybody the good news? We're gonna be up here for a while, and it's gonna get a hell of a lot colder."
Back in the cabin, Steve didn't mince words: "We got no radio, no instruments, no controls, and we're losing cabin pressure." Everyone peppered him at once with panicked questions. After quieting them, Marlena asked if John could fly the plane. Steve told them that John was in the copilot's seat and apparently remembered a lot about being a pilot. Steve explained that John and the pilots had decided the best thing to do was to keep the plane flying straight and level for the time being.
Steve asked Philip to round up some blankets because it was going to get a lot colder. John returned to the cabin and reiterated what Steve had told them. Marlena asked him point-blank, "Are we going to crash?" John replied, "Not on my watch." He admitted he had absolutely no idea what to do next and filled them in on what was happening.
He said the plane's controls were unresponsive, so they had tried but failed to descend to a warmer altitude; they had attempted to dump fuel, but it hadn't worked; the plane was flying at a constant altitude, but they couldn't maneuver it; they were losing cabin pressure by the minute; and they had no idea how or why any of it had happened, nor how to fix it.
Bo asked how long they could stay in the air. John said two and a half hours, but they couldn't change course or land. He said at that altitude, their main problems were the cold and the lack of oxygen. Steve asked how long the air in the cabin would last. John replied that it was leaking from a hole in the fuselage, so he couldn't calculate how long it would take. Bo asked why they didn't just turn off the engines until they descended to a safer altitude. Steve said they'd already tried that, but it was all tied into the electronics.
John returned to the cockpit. Marlena advised everyone to get bundled up to keep warm and conserve body heat. Steve got "Papa Shawn" settled comfortably then joined Kayla as the rest of the group huddled under blankets with their seatmates. Kayla confided to Steve that she was worried about Stephanie, should anything happen to them, and he tried to assuage her fears.
When John got back to the cockpit, he found both pilots unconscious. He returned to the cabin, and quietly asked to see Marlena up front. She was stunned to see the pilots on the floor. He asked if it was from the cold or the lack of oxygen, but she said no. She slipped back into the main cabin to retrieve her bag then returned and checked the pilots' vital signs.
After noticing residue in the bottom of the water bottle the pilots had shared, Marlena determined they had probably been drugged with a high dose of narcotics. John asked if she could administer anything to counteract the drugs. She replied that without knowing what the pilots had been given, or how much, she could only guess and if she were wrong, it could kill them. John said he was sick of all the talk about dying, and added, "I'm gonna get my butt on the ground in one piece, and you and your friends back there are going to help me." As he got back into the pilot's seat, Marlena smiled to herself.
Later, Marlena told John she'd given the pilots naloxone, and they were stable but still unresponsive. John admitted he had no idea what his next step was. She said she was impressed with the way he'd handled things so far. Suddenly, John closed his eyes and began "doodling" in the air with his finger. When Marlena asked what he was doing, he replied, "Math." He said he'd calculated that they had a little over two hours' flying time left, and he might have figured out a way to land safely and they might have just enough oxygen to do it.
Back in the cabin, Bo checked on Shawn Sr. as all of the passengers are shivering, and looking at each other with fear and concern.
Marlena said that John had calculated how much fuel they needed to burn off before they could land safely. She reminded them about the leak in the fuselage, but she said they could use whatever was in the oxygen masks and released the masks from overhead. John appeared in the cockpit door, and Marlena asked if he'd figured out how to land the plane. He said no; they'd be up there until they ran out of fuel. "And then what?" gasped a panicky Chloe. John replied, "We join Colleen and Santo in the sweet hereafter."
2/14 There was mass panic on the plane. The plane was running out of fuel and oxygen. Not all the oxygen masks worked. There was a lot of discussion about who would use the masks. As a group, everybody decided to take turns using the masks. Everybody except John, he refused to share his personal oxygen tank and mask.
John, Steve, and Bo decided to do something about the plane. Bo tried to stand but got dizzy and was unable to assist anybody. Steve knew how to hot-wire cars, so he thought he'd give the plane a shot. Steve asked John to accompany him to the cockpit. John refused, choosing to work on the back of the plane by himself.
John returned and told everybody he didn't know what he was doing. He decided to take a break. He sat beside Kayla and closed his eyes. Kayla asked what John was doing. John said he was thinking. Kayla said John needed to do something and quick. John had to save the day, just as he always had. John said what he needed was for people to stop telling him what to do and stop reminding him of what he used to be like. John left his seat and walked toward the cockpit.
Shawn Sr. did not want to share an oxygen mask. He decided that he had lived a full life and was at peace with his sister. Perhaps it was the time for him to make peace with God. Hope and Bo forced Shawn Sr. to share the air mask with them. Bo finally decided to tell his wife about his illness. Hope was devastated to learn that her husband had cancer and crushed when he said it was likely fatal. Shawn Sr. could not believe his ears. He was very concerned for his son. Bo was growing weak due to lack of oxygen. Shawn Sr. decided Hope should keep the oxygen for herself and Bo. He was willing to sacrifice himself for his son.
Steve reached the cockpit. He tried to use the oxygen masks, but they were not working. Very soon, Steve became weak and lost consciousness. John entered the cockpit and saw Steve sitting on one of the chairs. John felt for a pulse then held the oxygen mask to Steve's face. John encouraged Steve to wake up, but had no intention of looking after him.
John was able to repair the oxygen mask in the cockpit. He placed it on Steve and began to hit him. Steve regained consciousness and began to flail about. John told him to calm down. John said he had good news and bad news. The good news was that Steve was fine. The bad news was that he would not be for much longer.
Lexie told Abe how worried she was about Bo. She was sure Bo had not told Hope about his illness. Abe told her the plane would be arriving soon. Lexie expressed concern. Just then, Chelsea and Stephanie enter Abe's office. Chelsea wanted to know what Lexie was so concerned about. Lexie skirted the issue. Chelsea wanted to know if they had heard anything about when the plane might arrive.
Chelsea tried reaching Bo but was unable to. Abe made a call and discovered the plane had left Ireland a couple of hours prior and was headed home. Lexie asked Chelsea about her mother. Chelsea said Billie was adjusting well to her new life. Billie had a flat in London and was very happy. Lexie asked Chelsea to give Billie her love.
Abe told the young ladies it was not necessary for them to stay because he would call them as soon as the plane arrived. Just as Chelsea and Stephanie were leaving, Abe received a call. Abe stopped them because it was a call about the plane. Abe told everybody the plane was in trouble.
2/15 Roman was surprised to find Abe, Lexie, Chelsea, and Stephanie in his office at the Salem Police Station. Abe informed him that John's plane had lost radio contact, and the pilots had missed a scheduled position report. He said it appeared as though they would miss their landing coordinates and soon run out of fuel. If that were to happen, Abe continued, they would have no safe place to land. Caroline and Max soon arrived. In detailing the situation for his mother, Roman didn't sugarcoat the fact that their family was in trouble.
Roman reassured everyone that the pilots were trained to deal with all sorts of emergencies, plus they had John, Bo, Philip, and Steve to help them. Everyone waited and worried while Abe and Roman got on the phone to attempt to get more information. Roman hung up with Homeland Security and said there was no indication that the crew's lack of communication was connected to terrorism. Abe soon learned that Greenland was tracking the plane on radar, but it still hadn't changed course, airspeed, or altitude.
In the cockpit of John's plane, a digital readout ticked off the oxygen supply's remaining minutes. As Steve regained consciousness and gasped for breath behind his oxygen mask, John recapped what he'd missed: they still had no control over the plane and couldn't alter their course or altitude, and there was less than half an hour of oxygen and an hour's worth of fuel left.
When John calmly told Steve, "Look on the bright side. The crash won't kill us, we'll already have suffocated," Steve lost it. He told John they could not give up because they had to save their friends and families. John concurred and said they needed to dump the fuel, regain control, and try to land the plane. John then asked about the pilots. "They didn't make it," replied Steve. John wondered aloud who could have been behind the sabotage.
Back in the passenger cabin, the group discovered more of the oxygen masks were working, so everyone could have their own. As Hope secured an unconscious Bo's mask, Shawn Sr. dropped his own mask to his lap. Hope gently ordered him to put it back on, but he refused. "I won't do it, darlin'. Bo needs to live, and so do you," he said. He and Hope argued, and she finally convinced him to put his mask on while she went to get Kayla, because Kayla deserved to know what he was about to do.
Shawn Sr. said he'd put on the mask only if Hope didn't tell any of the others. When Hope quietly led Kayla back, Kayla was concerned to see that Bo was unconscious. Hope explained Bo had passed out because he'd refused the oxygen. She related that Bo had said he was probably not going to make it, anyway, and they should let him die and Shawn Sr. was trying to do the same thing.
As Hope watched tearfully, Kayla tried to talk Shawn Sr. out of sacrificing himself. She told him she was pregnant and wanted him to know his new grandchild. Shawn argued that the child wouldn't even have a chance at life unless Kayla let him go. Kayla ordered her Pop to put his mask back on, but he steadfastly refused. He told Kayla he loved her and the whole family, and promised he and Colleen would watch over them all. "Tell Caroline that I'll miss her most of all," he said resolutely.
Kayla said without the oxygen, he would just go to sleep, and then she would put the mask back on him. He told her to stop it and let him die. "You know it's right!" Shawn insisted as Kayla began to weep. "Now let me go, before the devil knows I'm gone." With that, Shawn reached up and yanked his mask's tubing out of the ceiling. Kayla cried, "No! Pop!" as the plane bounced, nearly jostling Hope into the aisle.
Up front, the oxygen monitor clicked down to seven minutes. John told Steve they needed to figure out a way to either regain control so they could descend, or dump the fuel-but the former was far preferable, as dumping the fuel would cause the plane to plummet quickly. John located the proper switches for Steve, who removed the control panel's cover and began working on the wires with pliers and a screwdriver. Steve noted that it looked like the wires had been burned by explosives, but neither man was sure which set of wires controlled the fuel dump and which went to the flight controls.
Hope removed her glove and felt for Shawn's pulse. "I can't believe he's really gone," she sniffed to a devastated Kayla, and then gently pulled the blanket over his face. They agreed not to tell the others yet. Hope quietly asked Kayla if Bo was going to die from what he had. Kayla assured her she would do everything she could not to let that happen. "He has to live, Kay," said Hope, her face streaked with tears. "Your father's sacrifice can't be in vain."
Steve began having trouble breathing, and as the clock ticked down to zero, John barked, "We need flight control or dump that fuel now!" One by one, the passengers removed their masks as they realized they were no longer getting oxygen, and everyone gasped for breath. Belle insisted there had to be more air for Claire. Marlena tried to reassure her by telling her Claire would just stay asleep and would never know what had happened. The words offered little comfort for Belle, who began sobbing.
Hope put her arm around Bo and softly said, "I love you, Brady," as she rested her head on his shoulder. Kayla put her head on her father's chest, whispering, "I love you, Pop. I love you, Steve."
In the cockpit, Steve succumbed to the lack of oxygen and slumped back in his seat. Deeply drawing in breath through his mask, John took over with the wires, as the passenger cabin grew eerily quiet behind him. Finally, John twisted the right combination of wires together, and the plane made a whining sound. Immediately, the fuel gauges began sliding toward "empty," and the plane began to descend rapidly.
John grabbed the controls, but they didn't respond. Steve began to wake up, and coughed, "What happened?" John told him he'd been able to dump the fuel but still needed flight controls. "Start jamming wires!" he ordered. Steve did as he was commanded, quickly fumbling with the instrument panel wiring, until suddenly John said, "That's it!" He told Steve to grab the controls, and they both fought to pull the plane's nose up.
In the back, Hope began to stir and she looked around them, disoriented, but the others remained motionless. At last, the plane leveled off. Hope checked to make sure Bo was breathing then removed his mask and woke Kayla.
Marlena called up to the cockpit, and John told her they had dumped the fuel, and the plane was at a low enough altitude that they should all be able to breathe. She asked if they'd be able to land, and he replied that it would be "a little sooner and harder than we'd like." "I love you," a thrilled Marlena told him. "Good to know," he replied before hanging up. Marlena told the other passengers they were out of fuel but were about to attempt an emergency landing, so they should all buckle up and brace themselves.
When the group at the police station began to grow more panicked, Abe and Roman assured them that the FAA, Homeland Security, the ISA, and NORAD were all working on it and would notify them as soon as they had any news. Abe tried to convince them all to go to the Brady Pub to wait for news, but Caroline defiantly said, "I'm not going anywhere." Chelsea and Stephanie echoed her thoughts.
Abe's phone rang, and after he hung up, he grimly told the group the plane had just gone off radar. Caroline asked if that meant it had crashed, but Abe said he didn't know. Roman announced he would try to reach NORAD, and the others worried in silence.
In the cockpit, John and Steve wrestled with the controls. "Hey! There's land!" Steve shouted. John told him to just keep the nose up. Steve prayed to God to soften the blow when they hit the ground. John announced they had no landing gear, which alarmed Steve.
The plane bounced hard, which woke Bo. Though he was a bit groggy, he noticed Shawn Sr.'s blanket was covering his face. Bo jumped out of his seat, yanked the blanket off, and tried to rouse his father.
Kayla told Bo what Shawn had done. "It was supposed to be me!" a devastated Bo cried. Kayla told him their father had died a hero, and Bo collapsed in tears against Shawn's chest. After he'd pulled the blanket back over Shawn's face, Hope told Bo they were making an emergency landing. Belle and Shawn told each other, "I love you," as did Bo and Hope. Chloe wailed, "God help us!"
Roman announced that NORAD was sending rescue planes to the projected crash site. The others realized that meant the plane had probably crashed, and Lexie told them all not to panic. Max and Chelsea tried to comfort a sobbing Caroline, as Stephanie prayed aloud.
As the plane began to dive more sharply, John told Steve to pull back on the controls as hard as he could. Shawn shouted across the plane to Bo and Hope that he loved them, and they returned the sentiment. Marlena protectively held her arm across Claire and told Belle she loved her. Belle and Shawn again expressed their love for each other. Philip shouted, "This is it!" and up in the cockpit, John grabbed Steve's jacket and repeated those exact words. The plane's dive grew more vertical, the lights on board flickered, and everyone in the passenger cabin screamed in terror.
2/18 At the Salem Police Department, Abe and Roman told the Brady and Johnson families that the FAA lost radio contact with John's plane, and that it had disappeared from all radar tracking systems. Abe told the families that the FAA reported John's plane was presumed to have crashed.
John's plane crashed somewhere in a cold mountainous area. John was the first to regain consciousness. He walked around the crash site in a daze and did nothing to help the injured. He seemed cold and indifferent as he sized up the situation.
