| Sunday
7pm
7pm is the weakest hour
of the entire
week, but there were a few success stories. "60 Minutes" (18) showed
improvement
over last season, while "America's Funniest Videos" (78) came back to
the
hour after a muti-years absense and won in the younger demos. NBC did
just
okay with "Dateline" (69), while Fox was lost with "King of The Hill"
(99),
and whatever else it was airing in the hour that week. "Oliver Beene"
got
a shot of a few weeks and came in at 112th, so its no wonder Fox
usually
stuck with repeats. Over on the WB, air repeats ("Smallville"), and get
repeat numbers (155). But then again, considering what Fox spent on new
programming for the hour, maybe that's the best way to go....
Winner: America's
Funniest Videos (ABC)
Loser: Oliver
Beene (Fox)
8pm
Sundays at 8pm is always
one of the
most competitve hours of the entire week, but this season not so much.
CBS ran away with the crown early on with "Cold Case" (17), CBS's first
drama hit in the hour in 5 years, while Fox pulled solid numbers for
"The
Simpsons" (42). ABC's (10-8) was a weakling in 81st, "American Dreams"
was slightly better for NBC in 65th, while the WB's "Charmed" (128)
continued
to be a war-horse. But then ABC did something that it only did once
last
season- it launched a hit. "Extreme Makeover Home Edition" (35) came
along
in February and upset the balance in the hour. While CBS, NBC & the
WB didn't seem to mind, "Makeover" seemed to steal viewers directly
from
"The Simpsons," which hit series lows in May. Then again, considering
how
bad the show has gotten, maybe it's time to pack it in for good.
Winner: Cold
Case (CBS), Extreme Makeover Home Edition (ABC)
Loser: The
Simpsons (Fox)
9pm
Like 8pm, 9pm on Sundays
is usually
fairly competive, but not so much this season. "Law & Order: CI"
(21)
ran away with the crown, leaving the compeitition in the dust. CBS's
Movie
(26) was the strongest of the competiting lot, ABC's "Alias" (74)
continues
to lose viewers, while "Malcolm In The Middle" over on Fox will likely
be entering its last season thanks to a 67th rating after being in the
top 20 only three years ago. It's too bad that Malcolm wasn't doing
better,
so then "Arrested Development" might just catch on instead of ranking
105th.
But I have a feeling that it's more of a cable show anyway..... And
last,
and certainly least, was the WB, which couldn't decide on anything.
"Tarzan"
(139) was yanked after only a few weeks, to be replaced by the cheaper
"The Surreal House" (134) and "High School Reunion" (146). Next season,
it's back to dramas again, but likely only for a few weeks.
Winner: Law
& Order: CI (NBC)
Loser: Malcolm
In The Middle (Fox)
10pm
Early in the season,
after CBS's
Movie, it looked like ABC's "The Practice" was making a comeback in the
ratings. It wasn't up in viewers, but it was gaining back critical buzz
and was comfortably beating the "sure thing"- "Lyon's Den" (56) over on
NBC.
But then something happened- "Crossnig Jordan" came back. Said show
wrapped
up its long-awaited third season in 23rd, sending "The Practice"
whailing
all the way down to 62nd. Case closed.
Winner: Crossing
Jordan (NBC)
Loser: The
Practice (ABC)
