The Gomer Pyle Episode Guide

Notes: 1. I've ranked the episodes with ****, four being excellent, one being crummy. Episodes with a ? by them means I don't remember the episode well enough to rate it. 2. These episodes are numbered in the order they were in the Excite episode guide. Whether the episodes were actually originally shown on TV in this order back in the ‘60s remains a mystery to me.

***˝ Episode 1. "Gomer Overcomes the Obstacle Course." Gomer tries his best to finish the obstacle course.

***˝ Episode 2. "Guest in the Barracks." Gomer sneaks a recruit's girlfriend into the barracks.

? Episode 3. "Pay Day." Gomer refuses to accept all of his paycheck.

*** Episode 4. "Captain Ironpants." Gomer tries to help a lady Marine improve her looks and personality.

*** Episode 5. "Gomer Learns a Bully." A troublesome recruit targets Gomer.

***˝ Episode 6. "Private Ralph Skunk." Gomer adopts a pet skunk.

**˝ Episode 7. "Nobody Loves a Sergeant." Sgt. Carter can't figure out why Gomer likes him.

* Episode 8. "Gomer and the Dragon Lady." Carter tricks Gomer into trying to get a kiss from the "Dragon Lady."

***˝ Episode 9. "Survival of the Fattest." Carter and Gomer are partners on a 5-day survival test.

? Episode 10. "A Date for the Colonel's Daughter." Gomer takes the Colonel's daughter to a dance.

**** Episode 11. "They Shall Not Pass." Gomer's platoon engages in war games trying to blow up a bridge.

***˝ Episode 12. "Sergeant Carter, Marine Baby-Sitter." Sgt. Carter winds up getting into all kinds of trouble with his girl when he gets involved in a baby-sitting job.

**** Episode 13. "The Case of the Marine Bandit." Gomer and Carter become unwilling robbery accomplices.

*** Episode 14. "Sergeant of the Week." Carter mistakenly thinks Gomer is dying.

***˝ Episode 15. "Grandpa Pyle's Good-Luck Charm." Grandpa Pyle gives Gomer a good-luck charm.

**** Episode 16. "Dance, Marine, Dance." Gomer and Sgt. Carter sign up with a crooked dance studio.

**** Episode 17. "Sergeant Carter's Farewell to His Troops." Sgt. Carter announces he is quitting the Marines.

* Episode 18. "The Feuding Pyles." Gomer's new-found friend is from a family feuding with the Pyles.

? Episode 19. "Sergeant Carter Gets a Dear John Letter." Carter decides that his girlfriend's new love is Gomer.

*** Episode 20. "Love Letters to the Sarge." Carter never gets any mail from girls, so Gomer tries to cheer him up by sending him anonymous love notes.

**** Episode 21. "Daughter of the Sarge." Carter's adopted Korean daughter wants to wed a Marine.

? Episode 22. "Officer Candidate Gomer Pyle." Gomer passes the exam for officer training.

? Episode 23. "Old Man Carter." Sgt. Carter feels his age on his birthday.

? Episode 24. "Gomer Makes the Honor Guard." Carter tries to keep Gomer from being an honor guard.

**** Episode 25. "My Buddy the War Hero." Carter and his wartime buddy find themselves at odds, each thinking himself was the war hero who saved the other.

? Episode 26. "Double Date With the Sarge." Sgt. Carter double-dates with Gomer. I remember a double-dating episode, but it came much later in the show, after Bunny and Lou-Ann became regulars.

**** Episode 27. "The Jet Set." Gomer and Duke get into all kinds of trouble, getting themselves locked on a airplane, bound for France, Rome, and London!

**** Episode 28. "Sergeant of the Guard." Gomer tries to capture a ring of thieves.

***˝ Episode 29. "Gomer Dates a Movie Star." Gomer is asked to take two women to a dance. One was the movie star . . . the other was the Colonel's daughter, I think.

**** Episode 30. "Gomer the MP." Gomer makes several major blunders while on MP duty.

* Episode 31. "PFC Gomer Pyle." All the men except Gomer pass their PFC tests. The first color episode, I think . . . Not a good introduction to the color GP episodes!!

***˝ Episode 32. "Third Finger, Left Loaf." Best-man Gomer loses the wedding ring . . . and it could be in one of 600 loaves of bread!! First appearance of Sgt. Hacker.

***˝ Episode 33. "Gomer Un-Trains a Dog." Gomer turns a vicious guard dog into a gentle pet.

**˝ Episode 34. "Home on the Range." Gomer befriends a homeless hillbilly family.

*** Episode 35. "Supply Sergeant Never Die." Gomer gets the supply sergeant's job on a bet. Other than having Richard Sinatra play a character called Cpl. Boyle, this is a really good episode. First appearance of Lester Hummel.

***˝ Episode 36. "The Blind Date." Gomer's date thinks he is a millionaire oil man. I think this is the first appearance of Bunny Olsen.

**** Episode 37. "Cat Overboard!" Gomer brings a mother-to-be cat aboard a Naval ship.

***˝ Episode 38. "Gomer Captures a Submarine." Gomer fouls up a simple reconnaissance, but later triumphs.

*˝ Episode 39. "The Grudge Fight." While still on the Naval ship, Carter challenges the CPO to a boxing fight . . . And the CPO just happens to be a retired boxing champ.

*** Episode 40. "Gomer the Star Witness." Carter is involved in an auto accident, and Gomer is the sole witness. As episodes go, there's better out there, but one very significant thing happened in this episode: Roy Stuart makes his debut as that vastly underrated TV knock-out, Cpl. Chuck Boyle.

***˝ Episode 41. "A Visit from Cousin Goober." Goober Pyle pays Gomer a surprise visit, and a big mix-up occurs between the two when Goober tries on a uniform.

**** Episode 42. "A Husband for Sgt. Carter's Sister." Sgt. Carter doesn't like his sister's fiancé, so she devises a plan to make him give his approval for them to get married.

***˝ Episode 43. "Gomer Minds His Sergeant's Car." Carter's car disappears while in Gomer's care.

**** Episode 44. "Gomer Pyle, P.O.W." Gomer is captured by the enemy while on maneuvers.

**** Episode 45. "Gomer the Peacemaker." Gomer tries to patch up Carter and his girlfriend.

*** Episode 46. "Gomer Pyle, Civilian." Gomer becomes a civilian employee on the base.

**** Episode 47. "Arrivederci, Gomer." When Gomer sings a love song for Frankie's sister, it's misinterpreted by the mother to mean that Gomer wants to marry Rosa.

***˝ Episode 48. "Grandma Pyle, Fortuneteller." Gomer's grandmother predicts Sgt. Carter's future.

***˝ Episode 49. "Gomer and the Beast." A tough sergeant thinks Gomer is after his girl.

* Episode 50. "Sgt. Carter Dates a Pyle." Gomer tries to match his cousin and Sgt. Carter.

**** Episode 51. "Little Girl Blue." Gomer befriends a colonel's lonely little daughter.

*** Episode 52. "A Star is Born." Carter becomes the star of a television documentary.

**** Episode 53. "Gomer and the Phone Company." Gomer is arrested when returning phone-company money.

***˝ Episode 54. "Vacation to Vegas." Gomer wins a free weekend for two in Las Vegas.

*** Episode 55. "Duke Slater, Night Club Comic." Duke does impressions of Gomer and Carter at the Jade Club.

***˝ Episode 56. "Opie Joins the Marines." Opie Taylor (Ronny Howard) wants to join the Marines.

** Episode 57. "A Date with Miss Camp Henderson." Carter bets Gomer can get a date with a beauty queen.

***˝ Episode 58. "Gomer and the Father Figure." An old con artist dupes Gomer and Sgt. Carter.

***˝ Episode 59. "A Desk Job for Sgt. Carter." Carter takes a desk job while Boyle runs the platoon.

**** Episode 60. "Gomer the Would-Be Hero." Carter lets Gomer accept the credit for a heroic deed because he doesn't want Bunny to find out he was in the diner with another girl.

* Episode 61. "Lies, Lies, Lies." No one believes an actress invited Gomer to her house for a party.

*** Episode 62. "Crazy Legs Gomer." Carter wants Gomer to win an intersquad contest.

**** Episode 63. "Caution: Low Overhead." Sgt. Carter sets out to expose a fraud. First appearance of Sid Melton as Friendly Freddy.

** Episode 64. "Gomer the Carrier." Everyone has German measles except Carter and Gomer.

*** Episode 65. "Show Me the Way to Go Home." Gomer befriends an alcoholic.

**** Episode 66. "Gomer and the Little Men from Outer Space." Gomer reports he saw creatures from outer space.

*** Episode 67. "How to Succeed in Farming Without Really Trying." Carter sneaks a watermelon into Gomer's garden laced with vodka.

**** Episode 68. "The Borrowed Car." Gomer tries to do an errand that Carter forgot and winds up being suspected of stealing Carter's car and is arrested.

***˝ Episode 69. "Gomer Pyle, Super Chef." Hacker wagers he can train Gomer as a mess-hall cook.

**** Episode 70. "Marry Me, Marry Me!" Gomer winds up engaged after one date.

*** Episode 71. "Cold Nose, Warm Heart." Carter competes with a puppy for Bunny's affections.

*** Episode 72. "It Takes Two to Tangle." Sgt. Carter learns Bunny was seen with another man.

***˝ Episode 73. "Love's Old Sweet Song." Lou-Ann Poovie, an aspiring singer, applauds Gomer's song with a kiss. Of course, then Carter tries to win her affection by singing a song too . . . First appearance of Lou-Ann.

***˝ Episode 74. "Follow That Car!" Gomer and Carter are captured by smugglers.

**** Episode 75. "Whither the Weather." Gomer proves to be an accurate weather predictor.

**** Episode 76. "Gomer the Recruiter." Gomer unknowingly recruits a fugitive bank robber.

* Episode 77. "The Secret Life of Gomer Pyle." Carter suspects Gomer is spending his Sunday afternoons at the beach. He soon learns how wrong he was and he never should've thought it of Gomer.

**** Episode 78. "Go Blow Your Horn." Sgt. Carter tries to transfer Gomer to the band.

**** Episode 79. "You Bet Your Won Ton." Gomer holds a dinner in a Chinese restaurant, which is secretly a gambling den.

*** Episode 80. "Gomer and the Card Shark." Carter and Duke use Gomer to expose a card cheat.

*** Episode 81. "Sue 'Em Like Crazy." Two crooked lawyers try to urge Gomer and Carter into a suit.

***˝ Episode 82. "To Re-enlist or Not to Re-enlist." Sgt. Carter attempts to keep Gomer from re-enlisting.

***˝ Episode 83. "Lou-Ann Poovie Sings Again." The Marines' favorite night-club singer returns, and Carter and Duke battle over winning her affections.

**** Episode 84. "Gomer the Welsh Rarebit Fiend." Gomer's love for Welsh rarebit causes him to sleepwalk and tell Carter off in the middle of the night.

***˝ Episode 85. "Sing a Song of Papa." A club owner wants Gomer to sing every night. Of course, you can imagine how much Carter likes that . . . And then he and Boyle are shadowed wherever they go . . .

**** Episode 86. "Where There's a Will." Carter volunteers Gomer for a parachute jump . . . Only trouble is, Gomer has a fear of heights.

***˝ Episode 87. "Lost: The Colonel's Daughter." Gomer loses the Colonel's daughter at a go-go club.

***˝ Episode 88. "The Crow Ganef." Gomer's new friend, a crow, turns out to be a thief. And then Carter thinks it's Gomer who's stealing watches and fountain pens and Marine Corps rings . . .

**** Episode 89. "One of Our Shells is Missing." Carter, Gomer, and Boyle hunt for a live mortar shell.

*** Episode 90. "Lou-Ann Poovie Sings No More." Gomer finds singer Lou-Ann a job as a salesclerk in a record store.

***˝ Episode 91. "A Visit from Aunt Bee." Aunt Bee is going on a TV show to complain about Carter's attitude toward Gomer, so Carter develops a different personality to try to make her change her mind.

*** Episode 92. "Corporal Carol." A woman Marine falls in love with Gomer.

**˝ Episode 93. "The Recruiting Poster." Gomer learns his face will be on a recruiting poster.

*** Episode 94. "Gomer the Beautiful Dreamer." Gomer dreams that Carter will propose to Bunny.

** Episode 95. "A Leader of Men." A visiting congressman suggests a promotion for Gomer.

**** Episode 96. "The Great Talent Hunt." Gomer's friendly rival helps him prepare for an upcoming talent contest for the Navy Relief show in Washington D.C.

***˝ Episode 97. "Gomer Says ‘Hey' to the President." Gomer gets turned around on the White House tour and winds up in the president's office. Then he's arrested by Secret Service men . . .

***˝ Episode 98. "A Child Shall Lead Them." A little boy dupes Gomer and Sgt. Carter.

**** Episode 99. "The Show Must Go On." Gomer has stage fright just before the Washington show.

**** Episode 100. "The Better Man." Lou-Ann's father and ex-fiancé come to town.

*** Episode 101. "To Watch a Thief." Gomer thinks Sgt. Carter has stolen a watch.

*** Episode 102. "Friendly Freddy Strikes Again." Freddy tries to retrieve a ring he sold to Gomer.

***˝ Episode 103. "The Prize Boat." Carter and Gomer become partners owning a boat.

***˝ Episode 104. "Change Partners." After Carter and Bunny have another quarrel, they seek new partners. Bunny winds up wanting Gomer, and Carter is after Lou-Ann. So Gomer takes Bunny out and Carter takes Lou-Ann out. After an evening dining and dancing, Carter and Bunny realize that they should get back together, that they're just right for each other.

***˝ Episode 105. "Wild Bull of the Pampas." A South American general thinks Gomer would make a better leader for the platoon than Carter.

**** Episode 106. "Gomer the Good Samaritan." Gomer is detoured helping people en route to L.A. pick up General Prescott.

**** Episode 107. "Gomer the Privileged Character." Gomer's singing rehearsals excuse him from duty. His conscience won't have it, however, and he takes to doing the maneuvers he missed late at night.

* Episode 108. "Gomer Goes Home." Gomer gets in trouble while visiting in Mayberry.

**** Episode 109. "A Dog is a Dog is a Dog." The Colonel's dog escapes from Gomer and Carter.

**** Episode 110. "Luv Finds Gomer Pyle." A 15-year-old girl develops an infatuation for Gomer.

**** Episode 111. "Chef for a Day." When Colonel Gray praises Gomer's cooking, Hacker wants him to join the mess hall permanently.

* Episode 112. "Gomer and the Queen of Burlesque." Hacker fixes up unwitting Gomer with an exotic dancer. One of the series' disappointments, especially after Gomer found out what the girl's job was. He should've tried to convince her to give up that crazy job! But, personally, I kind of wonder if maybe she did . . .

**** Episode 113. "The Carriage Waits." A store mistakenly sends Gomer a baby carriage.

**** Episode 114. "Sergeant Iago." Carter sees Lou-Ann with another man.

*** Episode 115. "Goodbye, Dolly." Gomer has acquired a horse who was going to be sent to the glue factory and hides her on the base.

*** Episode 116. "The Price of Tomatoes." Gomer finds a farmer living on supposed military land.

***˝ Episode 117. "Friendly Freddy, the Gentleman's Tailor." Freddy sells faulty suits to Gomer and Carter.

* Episode 118. "Love and Goulash." Gomer becomes involved in a feud between two families.

*** Episode 119. "Gomer and the Night Club Singer." Gomer tries to help a nightclub singer save his act.

**** Episode 120. "And Baby Makes Four." Baby-sitting Gomer must sneak his charge onto the base. Surprisingly good for one of the later episodes. Last appearance of Cpl. Boyle (Wah!).

***˝ Episode 121. "Car for Sale." Carter sells Gomer a car he promised to Hacker.

**˝ Episode 122. "Corporal Duke." Duke returns but can't escape his old reputation.

***˝ Episode 123. "The Booby Prize." Carter gets the battalion booby boot stuck on his foot.

***˝ Episode 124. "The Return of Monroe." Lou-Ann's ex-finace visits after she argues with Gomer.

**** Episode 125. "A Marriage of Convenience." A foreign movie star must get married right away to be able to stay in America. She turns first to Gomer, then Carter.

**** Episode 126. "All You Need is One Good Break." Gomer and Carter get credit for a stuntwoman's heroics.

**** Episode 127. "A Star is Not Born." Carter can't correctly say his only line in a Hollywood movie. Not to be confused with "A Star is Born," episode 52.

**** Episode 128. "Just Move Your Lips, Sergeant." Off-key Carter wants to sing with the platoon chorus.

**** Episode 129. "Come Blow Your Top." Hacker bets Carter he can't stay calm for 24 hours. A real riot! One of the gems of the last season!!

**** Episode 130. "Gomer the Perfect MP." The sequel to episode 30 finds Gomer on MP duty again, this time not letting Carter through the gate.

***˝ Episode 131. "The Wild Bull Returns." General Cortez (Larry Storch) returns and falls for Bunny.

**** Episode 132. "A Little Chicken Soup Wouldn't Hurt." A widow (Molly Picon) feeds Gomer and his buddies.

**** Episode 133. "Hit and Write." Sgt. Carter offers to pay after scratching a car. Only trouble is, the car gets wrecked even more, only Carter didn't do it and the owner thinks he did . . . A fun mystery episode. Really cute!

* Episode 134. "A Tattoo for Gomer." Lou-Ann appears to like Gomer's fake tattoo. Sigh! A disappointment, and Gomer acts a bit out of character at the beginning.

*** Episode 135. "Win-A-Date." Gomer and Carter appear on the Win-A-Date TV show.

***˝ Episode 136. "Marriage, Sgt. Carter Style." Carter wants Gomer to marry so he won't re-enlist.

* Episode 137. "Two on the Bench." Carter doesn't believe Gomer knows a football star. I think I'll give this episode half a star. Let's see . . . Okay, here's the real rating of this episode from my view: ˝.

**** Episode 138. "Dynamite Diner." Gomer and Lou-Ann unwittingly help bank robbers. A gem!

**** Episode 139. "To Save a Life." For this plot, just imagine "Andy Saves Gomer" with the GP characters. Carter even eventually tries the same thing (the leaky gas heater) to even the score with Gomer, and the same thing happens that did in TAGS.

**** Episode 140. "Freddy's Friendly Computer Service." Freddy now runs a crooked computer dating service.

**** Episode 141. "Hare Today, Gone Tomorrow." Carter loses a rabbit belonging to the Colonel's nephew . . . who is also a general's son.

* Episode 142. "Gomer Tends a Sick Kat." Gomer wrongly assumes Carter is seriously ill.

? Episode 143. "Gomer Maneuvers." Gomer reveals his platoon's location during maneuvers.

**** Episode 144. "I'm Always Chasing Gomers." Gomer gets trapped on the plane taking Carter home to Kansas for a weekend. This episode will make you laugh so hard you'll fall off your chair!

**** Episode 145. "The Short Voyage Home." Carter accompanies Gomer on a bus to Mayberry, where Gomer is thinking of opening a gas station with Goober. They tangle with crooks along the way.

***˝ Episode 146. "Proxy Papas." Gomer and Carter are the only ones available to take the wife of one of the men to the hospital to have her baby.

**** Episode 147. "Flower Power." Hippies help Gomer paint a truck for maneuvers.

**** Episode 148. "Showtime with Sgt. Carol." Corporal Carol, now a sergeant, returns and wants Gomer to sing in her Marine talent show.

***˝ Episode 149. "My Fair Sister." Gomer must escort Carter's other sister (in other words, this isn't the one we met before) to a dance.

***˝ Episode 150. "Goodbye Camp Henderson, Hello Sgt. Carter." After a particularly harsh blow-up at Gomer, Carter learns that the Private is requesting a transfer to another base, so he won't be a bother to Carter anymore. A very touching and poignant episode, fitting for the series' last.
