After setting a new rainfall record over the winter (and it's not done yet), folks in the Pacific Northwest are chomping at the bit for weather worthy of getting out and about in. It was on just such a day we shook the rain from our hair and headed to Whidbey Island.

With a length of some fifty five miles, Whidbey Island is the longest island in the state. It's ranking as number four in size in the contiguous United States riles the locals though, so don't bring it up.

At the island's north end lies Deception Pass, so named by Captain Vancouver because he felt deceived upon discovering it. Apparently, he was hoping the narrow waterway connected to an inside passage more substantial than the one he found. On its northside lies Fidalgo Island, connected to Whidbey via the Deception Pass Bridge. Actually a pair of bridges - one spans the north passage, the other the south - connected in the center of the chasm by a rock called Pass Island.

The view from the span is incredible. Looking west you can see the Strait of Juan de Fuca and Olympic Mountains. Look east and Camano Island comes into view with the mainland and Cascade Mountains beyond. Though it's a drive, if ever you find yourself within an hour of the island - by ferry or road - a trip to Deception Pass is well worth your time.
