I. Bible Passages and Background
Information
Psalm 139:14, Mark 4:24
II. Early arrival activities
The children will add ears
and hair to their self-portraits. Again provide mirrors
for the children. Discuss the differences in everyone's hair and
that God created both of them. When the children finish, have
sound tubes out for the children to experiment with.
To make these, fill some empty film canisters with various
materials (bells, rice, beans, cotton). Have the children shake
the tubes and then try to guess what is inside. Be sure to
write what is in each one on the bottom of the canister. Discuss
that God made our ears to hear these sounds.

IV. Story
(Click here for the patterns for this
story.)
Earlier, one of the things we
added to our self-portraits was our ears. What do we use
our ears for? Who made our ear? Yes, God did.
Because God made our ears, we should always be careful what we
hear with them. Sometimes there are songs or TV programs
that have words we should not hear. Sometimes people
say things that we should not listen to. Tonight, we are
going to hear a story about Ellie Elephant. (Place Ellie
on the flannel board.) Ellie Elephant's job is to remind
us to be careful to only hear good things. The Bible says
in Mark 4:24 that we should be careful what we hear. Let's
learn Ellie's song, so we can sing it to her during our story.

Mark 4:24
(Sing the song 2 times
with the children.)
Ellie Elephant went for a
walk in the jungle one day. As she passed by the river,
she could hear her friends the crocodiles laughing. (Place
the crocodiles on the flannel boards.) "I
wonder what is so funny?" thought Ellie Elephant. As
she walked closer, she realized they were telling jokes.
Some of the words were ones she was not supposed to listen
to. Just then, one of the crocodiles stopped her.
"Hey Ellie, come join us!" he shouted. What do
you think Ellie should do? Should she go over and listen to the
jokes with them? No, she shouldn't. We better sing Ellie's
song to help her remember. (Sing the song.)
Ellie Elephant looked over at
the crocodiles. "No thank you," she shouted back. Then
Ellie continued on her walk. (Remove the crocodiles from
the flannel board.) A few minutes later, she say Timmy
Tiger standing by a tree. (Place Timmy on the
board.) "What are you doing, Timmy?" asked
Ellie. "I'm listening to my new CD," he said.
"Do you want to listen to it?" "What is it?"
asked Ellie. Timmy Tiger showed her the CD. When
Ellie saw it, she knew it was a group that used a lot of bad
language. Do you think Ellie should listen to the music?
Why should she not listen to the music? We better sing Ellie's
song to her to remind not to listen to bad words. (Sing
the song.)
Ellie thought for a moment
and then said, "I don't think I want to."
"OK," said Timmy. Ellie Elephant again continued
on her walk. (Remove Timmy from the board and add Pauline
Parrot as you say the next part.) It
wasn't long until Pauline Parrot flew by. "Where are you
going?" asked Ellie. "I'm going to Bible class
to hear God's word," she Pauline. "Do you want
to come with me?" she asked. What do you think Ellie
should do? Is it good to hear God's word? Yes, it
is. "I would love to!" exclaimed Ellie. So
off they went to Bible class. What did Ellie teach us
about our ears? What is something we shouldn't listen to?
What is something we can listen to? Let's sing Ellie's song one
more time. (Sing the song.)

VI. Lesson Focus
The focus of today's lesson is to
reinforce that God created our ears and we should use them to
glorify Him. Here are two activities to help
reinforce this. Choose the one that best fits your class of
children. If time permits, you may choose to do both.
"Feed Ellie Elephant"
Spread several peanuts out on the
table with the picture side down . Tell the children that
we are going to feed Ellie. Some of the peanuts are good
for Ellie and some are not. As the children pick up a
peanut, look at and discuss the picture on each. If the
picture is something we should hear, it a good peanut and we
should feed it to Ellie. If the picture is something we
shouldn't hear, it goes in the trash can. (Click here for patterns for the game.)
"Ellie Elephant Book
Page"
Tonight, the children will make
and add Ellie to their books.
