I. Bible Passages and Background
Information
Psalm 139:14, Matthew 6:22
II. Early arrival activities
The children will start their
self-portraits this week and add to them each week. These
will be placed on a class bulletin board titled "We are
Fearfully and Wonderfully Made". (Click here
for the complete directions and pictures of the bulletin board.)
During today's early arrival activity, the children will add
eyes to their portraits. Provide mirrors for them to look
at their eyes with. While they work, discuss the different
colors of everyone's eyes. Also discuss that God made
their eyes. As the children finish adding their eyes, have peek
boxes laid out for them to peek into. Discuss that each
object they see in the box was made by God. (Click here for
directions.)
III. Attendance, songs, flipcharts
Good Morning/Welcome Songs-Here are a few songs to use
to welcome your students to class. Choose the one that works
best for your students. As you sing each child’s name, have
that child place his/her attendance marker on your attendance
bulletin board. (Click here for picture and patterns.)

I love my Bible it’s plain to see.
It’s God’s word for you and me.
It’s not a flower to leave on the ground.
It’s not a ball to bounce around.
It’s not a toy like my teddy bear.
It’s my Bible and I handle it with care.
IV. Story
(Click here for patterns and pictures of
the flannel graph story.)
Just a few minutes ago, we
added eyes to our self-portraits. Who made our eyes? Yes,
God did. Because God made our eyes, we should always be careful
what we see with them. Sometimes there are video games and
things on TV that we should not look at. The Bible says in
Matthew 6:22 that the lamp of the body is the eye. This means
that we should only look at good things. We are going to
hear a story today about Ollie Ostrich. (Place Ollie
Ostrich on the flannel board.) She is an ostrich who
always hides her eyes when she is around something she shouldn't
see. We have a song that your will need to help me sing to
Ollie during our story. It goes like this:
(Jingle Bells)
Ollie Ostrich, hide your eyes
From things that are bad.
The lamp of the body is the
eye.
Matthew 6:22
Ollie Ostrich (Point to
Ollie on the flannel board.) was at Jerry Giraffe's (Place
Jerry on the flannel board.) house. Jerry pulled
out his new video game. (Place video game on the flannel
board.) "Do you want to play this game with
me?" he asked Ollie. "Sure!" she said. When
Jerry put the game in, Ollie realized it was a game her parents
had told her not to play. Well, she thought, they are not
here and they would never know if I played it. Maybe just
this once. What do you think Ollie should do?
Should she play the game or tell Jerry she doesn't want to? No,
she shouldn't play the game. Let's sing our song to help
Ollie remember not to let her eyes see bad things. (Sing
the song with the children. While you sing, bend Ollie's head
and hind it in the floor on the flannel board.) Did
Ollie listen to us? Yes, she did. She hid her eyes from
the game. When Jerry saw Ollie hiding her eyes, he said,
"Maybe we can watch some TV instead." (Remove
the video game from the flannel board and place the TV on it.)
Ollie lifted her head. (Lift Ollie's head back up.) "OK,"
agreed Ollie Ostrich. When Jerry Giraffe turned the TV on
, it was a cartoon that Ollie was not supposed to watch.
What do you think Ollie should do? That's right. She should hide
her eyes from the cartoon. Let's sing our song again and
see if Ollie will listen to us. (Sing the song and again
hide Ollie's head.) Did Ollie Ostrich listen to us
again? Yes, she did. Jerry saw Ollie hiding her eyes and
he turned the TV off. (Remove the TV and place the book on
the flannel board.) "Maybe we can look at my new
book about cars," he said. Ollie knew that was
something she could do. (Lift Ollie's head back up.) "That
sounds great!" she said.
What did Ollie show us we
should do with our eyes when we see bad things? We should
hide our eyes from them. Let's sing Ollie's song one more
time. (Sing the song.)
V. Memory Work
Memory Work Objectives:
1. The children
will memorize Psalm 139:14.
2. The children will learn
how to use their bodies to glorify God.

Bible Character Song Charts
There are 6 Bible Characters.
Each one teaches the children how to glorify God with their
bodies. In tonight's lesson, Ollie Ostrich taught the children
how to use their eyes for good. During the five following
Wednesday nights, a different Bible character will be added to
the songs you sing. Tonight you will just sing the Ollie
Ostrich song.
for patterns, songs, and questions to go along with each Bible
Character.)
VI. Lesson Focus
The focus of today's lesson is to
reinforce that God created our eyes and we should use them to
glorify Him. Here are two activities to help
reinforce this. Choose the one that best fits your class of
children. If time permits, you may choose to do both.
"Ollie Ostrich Game"
(Click here for patterns for talk
pictures.)
Show the children one of the talk
pictures. Have them name and discuss what is shown in the
picture. Ask them if that is something we should look at with
our eyes. Then sing the following song with the children.
(Ferra Jacques)
Ollie Ostrich, Ollie Ostrich
Look at this, Look at this.
Can you see it? Can you see
it?
Yes, yes, yes. Yes, yes,
yes.
(If the picture is something the
children can look at, have them nod their heads yes. If it
is not, then they hide their eyes in their arms and sing
"No, no, no. NO, no, no.")
"Ollie Ostrich Book
Page"
The children will start a "My
Bible Characters" book. At the close of each
Wednesday night lesson, they can make the Bible character they
learned about. These will be kept in the classroom and sent home
on week 7 (the review week for the creation lessons.)

book pages.)
