(Click here for flannel graph patterns and pictures.)

The parts written in bold are for the teacher to say or sing.  The parts written in italics are the actions for the teacher.

(“Farmer in the Dell”)

"Everything was dark.

Oh, everything was dark.

So, God made the light. (Shine your flashlight on the black felt.)

So, God made the light."

(Give the children small flashlights to turn on. Say the next part. When you are done, take up the flashlights.)

When God saw the light, He said it was good. God called the light day and the darkness He called night. That was the end of the first day.

(“Ferra Jacques”)

"Then came day two.

Then came day two.

God made the sky.  (Place the light blue sky felt over the top half of the black felt.)

God made the sky.

Then He made the water. (Place the dark blue water felt over the bottom half of the black felt.)

Then He made the water.

On day two,

On day two"

When God saw the sky and the waters, He said it was good and that was the end of the second day.

(“Ferra Jacques”)

"Then came day three.

Then came day three.

God made the ground. (Place the brown felt over half of the water.)

God made the ground.

Then He made all the plants. (Place a plant on the ground.)

(Give each child a plant to place on the ground.)

When God saw the ground and the plants, He said it was good and that was the end of the third day.

Next, came day four. On this day, God made the sun, moon, and stars and He placed them in the sky. (Place your felt sun, moon, and stars on the felt sky.) Do we see the sun during the day or night? When do we see the moon and stars?

(“Farmer in the Dell”)

"The sun rules the day. (Point to the felt sun.)

The sun rules the day.

The stars and moon rule the night. (Point the felt stars and moon.)

But, the sun rules the day." (Point to the felt sun.)

When God saw the sun, moon, and stars, He said it was good and that was the end of the fourth day.

On day five, God made the birds for the air (Place a felt bird on the sky felt.) and the fish for the water. (Place a felt fish on the water felt.)

(Give each child a small bird to use in acting out the next song.)

(“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”)

"Birdie, birdie, in the air

Flying here and everywhere.

Fly up high and then down low.

Fly around then off you go.

Birdie, birdie, in the air

Flying here and everywhere."

(Take up birds.)

What else did God make on day five? (fish)

(Give each child a small fish to hold during the next song.)

(“Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star”)

"Fishy, fishy in the sea,

You’re the best little fish for me.

Fishy, fishy, don’t swim away!

Come with me and we will play.

Fishy, fishy in the sea,

You’re the best little fish for me."

(Take up fish.)

When God saw the birds and fish, He said it was good. That was the end of the fifth day.

On the sixth day of creation, God made all the animals (place felt animals on the board.) and people (Place the felt Adam and Eve on the board). The first man God made was Adam and the first woman was Eve. God made Adam and Eve to rule over all the animals.

(Give each child an animal and have him/her hold it up as its name is said.)

(“Farmer in the Dell”)

"The pig in the field,

God made it on day 6.

The pig in the field.

The monkey in the tree,

God made it on day 6.

The monkey in the tree.

The man to rule them all,

The man to rule them all,

God made him on day 6.

The man to rule them all."

(You can change the verses to fit the number of students in your class and the animals you have available to use.)

 “Creation Concentration”.

(Click here for game patterns and directions.)

Lay all the cards face down on the table.  Have children take turns turning two cards over at a time.  If the pair matches, the child keeps the pair.  If not, the cards are turned back over.  The game continues until all pairs have been found.  As each match is made, be sure to discuss what the card pictures and on what day it was created.

VI.  Lesson Focus

The focus of today's lesson is to reinforce that God created light on the first day of creation. Here are two activities to help reinforce this. Choose the one that best fits your class of children. If time permits, you may choose to do both.

“Creation Light Boxes”

Ask the children if they remember what God created first. (light)  Ask them to name things they do when it is dark outside and things they do when it is light outside. Tell them that they are going to make their own light boxes. Let each child look through a light box without the flashlight shining through it. Ask them to describe what they see. Explain that that is how the world looked before God created light. Next, shine the light through one end and have the children look through again. Ask them what they see. Pass a box out to each child to decorate.

“Pin-Poke Pictures”

Tell children that they are going to create their own light pictures.  Give each child a black sheet of paper and a blunt toothpick. Place the paper over a piece of craft foam.  Let the children poke holes in their paper to create a picture. When they are finished, help them glue their black paper onto a piece of yellow paper.
