Pictures at Hammocks Beach State Park |

The only vehicles on the island are owned by the park service. The headlights are covered with red tape so that the lights won't disturb sea turtles at night. The turtles can't see red light. The other islands along this section of coast are more developed, with lots of street lights, and sea turtles avoid those areas. Camping is prohibited on the Bear Island when sea turtles are nesting.

This picture shows the view back towards the mainland. From the top of a dune a person can see a large area of marshes.

The beach at Bear Island is one of the best along the Atlantic coast. The sands are white, litter is rare, and the crowds are nearly non-existant. There isn't a condo or motel in sight. Camp LeJuene, a Marine Corps base, is nearby. Some military aircraft, such as this helicopter, occasionally fly over.
