at Hammocks Beach State Park

Once on the island it's a half-mile (1 km) trek to the beach on this road. It's paved, bearly, and parts are covered in sand. The island is 3.5 miles (5 km) long, and about half a mile wide at most points.
The interior of the island is forested. This picture shows the damage to the forest from recent hurricanes. There are deer and other wildlife on the island. A limited amount of camping is allowed on the beach, as well as a kayak camp near an inlet.
