This is from an early autumn hike. We went off-trail near the Neuse River in the Smithfield area, a very damp, mossy floodplain. The leaves were just starting to change on the trees.

When we say off-trail, we're not joking. Some of the fallen trees are from when hurricane Fran came through the area in 1996.
