The Overland Trip, Getting Going

A quick flight back from Vic Falls to Harare, and it was time to meet up with the 'Encounter Overland' truck.

At the main Harare campground got introduced to everybody, learned how to set up tents, pack our stuff. With Encounter you sit facing each other in the back of a canvas top truck, with what you need for the day in a daypack. Your backpack gets packed away for the day in the trailer with the tents. Food goes under the seats, while the tables, cutlery, cooker, axe!, etc is stashed in various ingenious places.

Stu the driver/organizer/mechanic/conflict fixer and the only Encounter staff member. Helluva a good guy, tough job.

Typical 'travelling' day would include getting up early for breakfast...

Packing up then bouncing around in the back of the truck until lunch...

Whereup we'd try and find a shady spot to break out the meal...

Then back in the truck for the rest of the day's driving....

Until it was time to set up camp at the end of the day. Throw in the occasional beach, game park, tropical island, herd of elephants, etc, and there's the holiday.
