Because of his naivete, Gomer at first does not fair well. The DI takes Gomer under his wing and gets him in shape.

Guest star: Buck Young (Sgt. Whipple) , Richard Houde (Marine), Richard Tyler (Pvt. Helmsley), Peter Hansen (Lt. Col. Van Pelt), Jerry Dexter (Cpl. Johnson), Charles Meyer (Recruit), Mark Slade (Pvt. Swanson)

Gomer tries to pass the obstacle course in order to please Sgt. Carter.

The first episode starts with Gomer giving details to the barber how he wants his haircut like Floyd the barber use to do it, only to get a marine haircut instead. Sqt. Carter gets frustrated by Gomer's responses, like complimenting him on his voice. Gomer declares that he likes Sqt. Carter, and asks him "Do you like me"? Sqt. Carter's expression on his face tells it all. Gomer has diffuculty with The obstacle course, much to the aggrevation of Sqt.Carter. Eager to please his Sqt., Gomer practices at night to master the course. This episode has good exchanges between Gomer and Sqt.Carter, and does well to establish their relationship in the beggining.

2. Guest in the Barracks

First aired: 10/2/1964
Writer: Bob Ross  Director: Coby Ruskin
Guest star: Buck Young (Sgt. Whipple) , Robert Hogan (Lt. Norris), Joe E. Tata (Joey), Richard Tyler (Pvt. Helmsley), Lois Roberts (Rosemary), Joseph Corey (Corporal), Peter Hansen (Lt. Col. Van Pelt)
Global rating: 7.9

To the dismay of Sgt. Carter, Gomer breaks regulations and sneaks a recruit's girlfriend into the barracks.

Gomer sneaks his friend Joey's girlfriend into the barracks. A funny scene at the start as Gomer has food stashed away under his shirt,(to give to his friend Joey) and Sqt. Carter questions him about his added weight. Gomer rambles on about how his mother's and father's side of the family is different as far as weight staying on when they eat. Gomer sneaks in Joey's girlfriend into the barracks so they can reunite, which upsets Joey, Duke, and Sqt. Carter. Some funny scenes as Sqt.Carter is frustrated by what Gomer has done. Perhaps the funniest scene was when Sqt. Carter, fearing going to the brigg, tells Gomer when he gets out he will find Gomer, but he won't kill him right away. All ends well as Joey's girlfriend marches out of the gate undetected.

3. Private Ralph Skunk

Global rating: 10.0

Gomer adopts a pet skunk.

Gomer finds a skunk, and its prescence on the base upsets Sqt. Carter. Sgt. Whipple has Sgt. Carter's barracks messed up, causing Sqt.Carter to get yelled at. The are a lot of predictable scenes that follow, like Sgt. Carter holding his nose when speaking, and speaking in a hushed voice, as Gomer reminds him. Gomer has Ralf(the skunk) go into Whipple's barracks to clear everybody out, causing Whipple to get in trouble. Funny scene when Gomer explains how he named the skunk after his Uncle Ralf, and how the skunk looks like him around the eyes.

Global rating: 6.3

A straight-laced lady Marine officer reports Gomer for not saluting her. Gomer then attempts to help transform her into an attractive woman.

Instead of saluting a female Captain, Gomer tips his hat to her. This upsets her. She wants Gomer to report to her for a week for extra duties. She is given the nickname "Captain Ironpants" by others, and Gomer defends her, calling Duke "crude" for what he says about her. Gomer does thoughtful things, like holding a chair out for her, and giving her flowers. Thanks to Gomer's encouragement, the Captain eventually softens, and becomes more lady like, wearing perfume and makeup.

Global rating: 7.3

A trouble-making recruit decides to use Gomer as his fall guy.

Harry Phillips joins Gomer's platoon. He takes Gomer's bunk(thoughtful Gomer lets him), makes fun of him about his raking, etc. His friends encourage him to not take it from the bully, but Gomer gives him the benefit of the doubt. Gomer invites Phillips outside. The fellows think he is going to fight Phillips, but instead Gomer just wants to talk things out, trying to encourage Phillips to change his ways. Phillips is not accepting Gomer's advise. The best scene perhaps is when Sqt. Carter uses his "strategy": He tells Gomer the Marines look down on brawling between it's men, not to go against regulations, but also gives the hint to Gomer "some of these things you gotta take of yourself". Gomer doesn't take the hint, but instead informs Sgt. Carter that he would be tangeling with Phillips right now if not for Carter's lecture abount not brawling! Finally, during a Marine exercise Gomer knocks down Phillips three times, then gets knocked down by his friend little Joey. Gomer explains That Phillips needed a lesson, and Joey didn't.

6. Pay Day

Global rating: 10.0

Gomer is convinced he has been a goldbrick and stubbornly refuses to accept part of his paycheck. The Pentagon orders him to do so, but Gomer still refuses.

Sqt. Carter lectures Gomer about stealing money from the U.S. taxpayers by not earning his paycheck for the week. Gomer takes the critism literally, and refuses his paycheck for the week. As the news goes through the chain of command, they say eithier Gomer is conscientious or a nut. Sgt. carter goes nose to nose with Gomer, insisting he sign a receipt that he accepts the pay check. Gomer is concerned he could be keeping a young one from getting rollerskates, and does'nt sign. A classic scene as Sgt. Carter tries to intice a sleeping Gomer to sign "your name". Gomer, again, takes his instrustions literally, by signing " your name"! Another funny scene is when Sqt. Carter tries to rig a raffle, so that Gomer wins money that equals his weekly paycheck, but Gomer switched numbers with Duke, so Duke wins the raffle. Sqt. Carter ends up reporting to the General's office, worried he is in big trouble for not getting Gomer to take back the money, but the General praises Sgt. Carter for instilling in Gomer the work ethic that lead to Gomer refusing the money.

Writer: Jim Fritzell, Everett Greenbaum  Director: Sheldon Leonard
Guest star: Buck Young (Sgt. Whipple), Mark Slade (Eddie) , Jimmy Hayes (Corporal), Liam Sullivan (Psychiatrist), Ray Kellogg (Moran)
Global rating: 10.0

Gomer drives Carter crazy by liking him, no matter what he does to make Gomer dislike him.

Sqt. Carter yells at Gomer, but despite Sgt. Carter saying he don't like him, Gomer says he likes Sgt.Carter. Sqt. Carter complains to his buddies how Gomer likes him, and tells a story about his D.I. and how mean he was, and that he was the greatest D.I. who ever lived. A buuddy suggests Carter make Pyle his "house mouse". Funny scenes are next as Sgt. Carter tries his best to make Gomer not like him, like dragging mud on the floor, etc. Smiling Gomer cleans up with no complaints. Sgt. Carter talks to a psychiatrist about his frustration that Gomer likes him. Sgt. Carter gets transferred, but is stunned to find his men, including Gomer, have been transferred to the same place. " Surprise, Surprise, Surprise" as Gomer says. Gomer says he likes the Sgt. very much, and Sgt. Carter runs away.

8. Gomer and the Dragon Lady

First aired: 11/13/1964
Writer: Harvey Bullock  Director: Coby Ruskin
Guest star: Mark Slade (Eddie) , Peter Deuel (1st Man), Alan Dexter (Sgt. Atwater), Barbara Stuart (Hannah), Richard Sinatra (Benson), David Frankham (Travers)
Global rating: 7.2

Carter sets Gomer up with a beautiful but unkissable Dragon Lady.

Sgt. Carter leads his platoon in a scouting exercise. Sgt. Carter gets chewed out because Gomer finds such things as flowers, and suggersts them for Sgt. Carter's desk. Sgt. Carter, along with his buddies, sees a drunk being tossed against a wall by Hannah(played by Barbara Stuart, the future Bunny, Sgt.Carter's girlfriend)and the question becomes "why can't it be Pyle". Sqt.Carter stages a phony raffle, (see the episode "Pay Day") this time so Gomer can be the one to get the liberty kiss, and as Sgt.Carter hopes , be tossed up against the wall by Hannah, the "Dragon Lady". I think this episode is really good because Gomer is repeatedly manipulated to honor the tradition of the liberty kiss. He doesn't want to dissapoint his Sgt. Carter, but also doesn't want to kiss a stranger. Sgt. Carter instructs Gomer to ask for the kiss, but Gomer tells Hannah the whole story, including about how with his upbringing, he doesn't feel comfortable kissing a stranger. Gomer earns her respect, and she gives Gomer a long kiss. Sgt.Carter thinks Hannah falls for tradion, and ends up getting tossed against the wall himself!

Global rating: 10.0

Gomer and Carter go on a five-day survival test.

Sgt. Carter chooses Gomer to be his partner for 5 days of a survival exercise in the natural elements. They are expected to loose about 5 or 6 pounds. Great scene as Sgt.Carter digs a big hole searching for water. He finds mostly mud, as Gomer approaches with water that he found in an overground stream. Another good scene was Gomer telling how he caught fish, using his key ring. As Gomer rambled on about how to cook them, a frustrated Sgt.Carter yells "Pyle, lets have them". Gomer even makes homedade cigars for Sgt.Carter. Both men are questioned about their weight gain-Gomer 5lbs. and Sgt.Carter 6lbs-, and Sgt.Carter is down about Gomer getting praise for the success. Gomer graciously praises Sgt. Carter for giving him direction during the exercise.

Pyle is upset about being chosen, asking "why me". The colonel's wife is worried. Gomer arrives to pick up Jane with flowers. The best scene was Gomer rambling on about saving for 6 years to buy his mother a ceptic tank for her birthday, and then the colonel saying to his wife how a guy who does that can't be all bad. Gomer dances wild with Jane, as her mother is horrified. Gomer impresses Jane playing his guitar on the porch. She kises Gomer on the cheek, upsetting her mom, but the colonel is the voice of reason.

On maneuvers, Gomer leads the squad into an ambush.

Gomer is among 10 in his platoon during an exercise, as they are not to let anyone cross the bridge. If they are successful, Sgt. Carter's platoon gets a Gold boot. Gomer encounters the enemy, and takes his word for it that he is dead. Gomer asks him if he wants to talk to talk about it. The enemy isn't "dead", and 3 of Gomer's platoon are "killed" as called by the umpire. Funny scene as Sgt. Carter respectfully pleads with the umpire to declare Gomer "dead", for being in the line of fire. The umpire doesn't declare Gomer dead. Gomer carries the wounded man. Another funny scene was when Gomer mistakens Sgt. Carter for the enemy, declaring " I thought you were the enemy" and Sgt. Carter responding " I am the enemy"! Pyle ends up the only one remaining out of the ten. A lieutenant wants to cross the bridge, but Gomer stays firm. Then the lieutenant gets caught up in a trap Gomer set. Gomer used the rope that held up the bridge for the trap, as the lieutenant was pulled upside down by the rope. Gomer knocks down the bridge down with a rock. Sgt. Carter, the umpire, and Gomer himself get caught in the rope trap. But Gomer saved the day, as Sgt.Carter got the Gold boot.

Gomer offers to help a member of his platoon, by getting groceries for his wife and baby. Sgt. Carter offers Gomer a ride, then later takes Louis and the baby to the doctor. The delays eventually anger Berniece, as the date is off. The baby only stops crying when Sgt. Carter holds him. Sgt. Carter thinks his car is stolen, but Gomer went to get Berniece. Gomer praises Sgt. Carter for all the good he did, as Berniece is touched. All is good with her and Sgt. Carter. But instead of Sgt. Carter going on their date alone as planned, it ends up everybody is going to the movie, including the baby!

A mother-daughter burglar team uses Gomer for their next heist.

Sgt. Carter finds an attractive woman(Betty Ann)in a broken down car. Gomer comes on the scene, and using his experience back home at the gas station, fixes the spark plug. He mentions he never saw the rubber caps come off by accident before. This is a clue for viewers. Funny scene as Betty Ann, with only two seats in her car, picks Gomer to go with her, since he fixed the car. This frustrates Sqt. Carter. Betty Ann introduces Gomer to her mom,who determines Gomer is "perfect", to be used to rob a liquer store. Gomer is instructed to hand the clerk a note to get cooking sherry, and the clerk will give cash back. Trusting Gomer is unware that the note announces a robbery! The terrified clerk even gives Gomer his own money. Gomer talks to Sgt. Carter about " fate" and how "ain't life funny" that if Sgt.Carter had fixed Betty Ann's car, he would be going to dinner with her instead of Gomer. Sgt. Carter is jealous and makes up a story that Gomer left his bunk a mess, so he has to go back to the base, leaving Sgt. Carter alone with Betty Ann. Before leaving, Gomer gives Sgt. Carter a note, which announces the second robbery. Sgt. Carter instructs the clerk to "move it", not knowing the contents of the note. Back at Betty Ann's house with her mom there, Sgt. Carter hears on the radio the description of the marine bandit.Sgt. Great scene as the camera does a close up Sgt Carter's face, showing through facial expressions his realization the description fits him, and just at that moment a gun is put to his head. Then Gomer busts in with the police saying "shame, shame, shame," to the two con women. The tied up and gagged Sgt.Carter has to listen to Gomer explain how he figured it all out,as Gomer forgets to untie him and take the tape off his mouth. The last scene, Sgt, Carter sees another woman in a broken down car, and when he comes to her aide, discovers it is an elderley woman.

Carter thinks Gomer is dying and tries to be nice to him.

Sgt. Carter is not happy about once again not being named Sgt. of the week. He lectures his men, and Gomer asked to be excused from a run. Sgt. Carter thinks Gomer is faking his bad cold, and calls the doctor to confirm that Gomer got the doctor's O.K. to have the day off. There is mix up in which the doctor thinks he is talking to a horse owner, but is actually talking to Sgt. Carter. He tells Sgt. Carter "he's on his way out" and that "somebody's been riding him too hard". So Sgt. Carter thinks Gomer is dying, and is guilt ridden. So he takes care of Gomer, even telling Gomer to call him Vince. The doctor suggests to Sgt. Carter giving Gomer (thinking he is talking to a horse owner) an apple, a piece of sugar, and a brush to keep the flies off. The funniest scene was when Gomer was enjoying the radio with his headphones on, and it appeared to Sgt. Carter he was having convulsions. Sgt. Carter learns that Gomer is not dying, he just has a cold. Good scene at the end when Sgt. Carter was given the Sgt. of the week award for his "deep reguard for a dumb animal".

15. Grandpa Pyle's Good Luck Charm

First aired: 1/1/1965
Writer: James Allardice, Tom Adair  Director: Coby Ruskin
Guest star: Chuck Myers (Abrams), Norris Goff (Grandpa Pyle), Ron Rich (Oliver)
Global rating: 7.6

Grandpa Pyle gives Gomer a good luck charm to help him gain self-confidence.

Gomer gets a letter from his Grandpa Pyle, and he reads it to Duke. Grandpa writes he misses fishing with Gomer, as everytime he sees a worm he thinks of Gomer. He is comming to visit Gomer. Sgt.Carter tells his men that each will get a chance to lead the platton as part of a marine exercise. Gomer rambles on to Sgt. Carter that he does not not want to take his turn as he is concerned about dissapointing Sgt.Carter. Gomer talks with Grandpa Pyle about not wanting to lead the platoon. Grandpa suggests practice. Good scene as Grandpa wants Gomer to practice on a group of kids! They are confused by Gomer's commands, then when Grandpa Pyle demonstrates how to be a leader, he scares the kids, as they run away. Gomer has his turn to lead the platoon, and repeats the same commands too much, causing them to march into Sgt. Carter. Gomer tells Grandpa he is a failure as a leader. Grandpa gives him a metal piece that he says is a good luck charm, that Gomer's great Grandpa was a hero during the spanish-American war, etc. Gomer practices commands for Grandpa and is impressive. The best scene is when Grandpa Pyle goes to Sgt. Carter to try to get Gomer a second chance to lead the platton. When Sgt. Carter suggest to Grandpa Pyle that he can sit down, he replies that he only sits on a horse and that Sgt. Carter can sit down "if you're tired". Then Grandpa Pyle says to Sgt. Carter that he is shorter than he expected and asks if he is 6'0, which, as already established earlier in the epiode, is Gomer's height. Sgt Carter replies that he isn't 6'0. Then Grandpa makes fun of Sgt. Carter's midsection, even poking at it. Grandpa Pyle suggests that Sgt. Carter is afraid to give Gomer a second chance. His strategy works. Sgt. Carter agrees to give Gomer a second chance. Gomer is convincing this time around, except briefly when he looses the good luck charm. He gets it back and continues to be an impressive leader. Grandpa reveals to Gomer that the good luck charm did'nt come from his great Grandpa, but from the refrigerator! He made up the story to show Gomer that his leadership did'nt come from the "good luck charm" in his pocket, but from his heart.

16. Dance, Marine, Dance

First aired: 1/8/1965
Writer: Art Baer, Ben Joelson  Director: Coby Ruskin
Guest star: Sylvia Lewis (Ginger Fay), Frank Maxwell (Raymond Thomas), Pete Duel (Unknown), Gavin MacLeod (Fred Fay)
Global rating: 8.3

Gomer and Carter are scammed by a phony dance studio when they both sign lifetime contracts for lessons.

Gomer gets tricked into signing a contract for dance lessons by Fred and Ginger Fay. Sargeant Carter points this out to Pyle right away, and goes to the dance studio to get him out of the contract. Fred refuses to let Gomer out of the contract, which leads to a nose to nose shouting match between Sargeant Carter and Fred. In what would become a repeated, but always funny theme (most notably, the Friendly Freddy episodes), Sergant Carter himself is then conned, this time by signing a dance lesson contract himself! The solution to getting out of the dance lesson contracts is funny: Seargeant Carter enlists his platton to dance Ginger to exhaustion, causing her to quit, which voids the contracts.

17. Sergeant Carter's Farewell to His Troops

First aired: 1/15/1965
Writer: Dick Powell  Director: Coby Ruskin
Guest star: Buck Young (Sgt. Whipple) , Yvonne Lime (Sally), Chuck Winters (Hank)
Global rating: 10.0

Gomer and the troops try to change Carter's mind when he decides to leave the Marine Corps.

Gomer sees Sgt. Carter down and out. Sgt. Carter complaines about the boring social life of a marine, "old movies and a cup of coffee", to which Gomer replies "yeah, I love it". He also complains that women go for the big spenders. So he decides when his enlistment is up in three days, he is going to join the Anehiem motorcycle department. Gomer tells Sgt. Carter that his platoon will be upset if he leaves, that Sgt. Carter is "one of the family". So he asks Sgt.Carter to come and see their reaction when Gomer tells them. The best scene of the episode is next. When Gomer informs them of the news, the platoon is thrilled. Sgt.Carter interrupts the celebration with a classic chewing out. Gomer and a couple of buddies hatch a plan to keep Sgt.Carter, by having them foul up, like not marching properly. Duke realizes Sgt.Carter's weak point is women. A good looking woman named Sally, who already has a boy friend, is persuaded to go on a date with him. The boyfriend ends up slugging Sgt. Carter. Sgt. Carter goes to say Goodbye to his patoon. Funny scene as Duke imitates Sgt. Carter saying "I can't hear you" to Sgt.Carter, then the others join in to say "I can't hear you". Except for Gomer. Since he figure Sgt. Carter is no longer in the Marines, Duke continues to insult him, saying all he sees is a man with a "fat neck, a red face, and a funny jacket". Sgt. Carter changes his mind and reinlists, with another classic chewing out.

Gomer meets a fellow marine named Branch, and they learn that they lived close to each other. They get along well, but when Branch learns of Gomer's last name, he informs Gomer that their families have been feuding for years. The episode ties in Gomer not liking Bayonet drills, where he is suppose to knock down other Marines. Branch tells Gomer that his Dad said he has to kill Gomer. The two are at a loss about what to do. They then decide during a Bayonet exercise, that if Branch knocks down Gomer, that is a "kill", and Branch's Dad would be satisfied. Gomer, as planned, falls during the exercise, as Branch has now "killed" him. Gomer says "For a killed Man, I sure feel happy". Branch tells his Dad, who does'nt believe it, then Gomer gets on the phone to prove he is "dead".

Gomer feels bad for Sgt. Carter, because he does not get love letters like the rest of the plattoon. Gomer makes up his own love letter to send to Sgt. Carter, not including the name so Sgt. Carter thinks it is a woman. Gomer even puts perfume on the letter. Funny scene as Gomer is talking to an eldeley man in the library, and explains he is sending the love letter to his Seargant. Sgt. Carter has 3 women in mind who could have sent the letter, and decent scenes are next as he finds out it was not from those 3 women. His buddies want to see the love letter writer at a dance, so Gomer makes up a letter saying good-bye. All 3 of the women end up sending love letters to Sgt. Carter.

He decides on Gomer. Gomer goes out with Geraldine, who asks Gomer to talk some more. Gomer innocentley tells her she is real pretty. She writes a letter to Sgt.Carter calling off their relationship. Funny scene as a stunned Sgt. Carter keeps saying "go get Pyle". He wants Gomer to go out with Geraldine once more to find the "rat fink" who stole his girl. They go out again, and Gomer is so paranoid that someone will approach Geraldine he even watches a kid just watching the movie. Sgt. Carter is planning on what he will do to the "rat fink", hitting a locker. Geraldine ends up practically mugging Gomer as she kisses him, and Sgt. Carter sees it. Sgt.Carter is furious, thinking Gomer has stolen his girlfriend, and invites Gomer to an alley. Gomer then explains how Geraldine is fickle, and just likes to be sweet talked to, and it is better for Sgt. Carter to find out now rather than later. Sgt.Carter understands and all is well between them.

Carter. Touching scene as father and daughter reunite. When Sgt. Carter asks his daughter what her plans are, he is not happy to hear one of her plans is to marry a Marine. Gomer learns the wedding is just two days away. Sue Linn, not wanting to displease her father, plans to call off the wedding. It appears to Sgt. Carter that Sue Linn plans to marry Gomer. He says "Can't be, not to Pyle". Ever optimistic Gomer tells Sgt. Carter to think of it as not loosing a daughter, but gaining a son. When Sgt. Carter tells Gomer he can't marry his daughter, Gomer realizes the misunderstanding and tells Sgt. Carter that he isn't going to marry his daughter. Sgt. Gomer accidently knocks a rack of supplies over, and an officer tells Sgt. Carter "to take care of that." Sgt. Carter tkinks being an Officer is an easy job, so he decides to take the test to become an Officer. Gomer takes the test also. Good scene as Gomer keeps hitting two fingers on the desk (he explains that if the long finger tingles he answers false), what he calls hunching. Sgt. Carter is distracted by the noise as he tries to concentrate on the test. Gomer surprises Sgt. Carter by finishing the test quickly. The best scene was when Sgt. Carter quizzes Nick about the rusults of the test. Nick tells him about 9 of the 10 that made it. Then when Sgt. Carter asks who was 10th, Gomer excitedly comes in to tell Sgt. Carter that he, Gomer, was the 10th! Sgt. Carter has to relieve Gomer of his duties, and calls Gomer "sir" because of his new status. Gomer feels bad about Sgt. Gomer tells the salesman he"ll never forget this, and "From now all on I'll do all my shopping right here." Later, Sgt. Carter is chewing out the platoon, calling them thoughtless, forgetful pumpkin heads. Nice setup for the surprise as Sgt. Carter exclaims to Gomer "What didn't you forget, knucklehead." Then Gomer presents him with the watch. Sgt. Carter is touched by the gift. The fellows make innocent comments about Sgt. Carter being 35, such as "you're 3 years younger than my Dad", but Sgt. Carter starts to become feeling old. Funny scene as Sgt. Carter is doing deep knee bends, and his back goes out. Gomer explains that the same thing happened to his grandmau. Sgt. Carter says "I'm not you're grandmau!". Gomer tries to give Sgt. Carter confidence by putting straw in his backpack during a hike, but when Sgt. Carter finds out, it only makes things worse as he plans to take a desk job because he thinks he's too old. Then, Gomer fakes a twisted ankle so Sgt. Carter will have to carry him during a hike. Sgt. Carter carries Gomer during the hike and proves he is strong, as Gomer points out. So all ends well.

When Diane describes the fellow Dixie is bringing with her, that he likes monster movies etc., Sgt.Carter says "no". Funny scenes as Dixie and Sgt. Carter argue, as she seems to be a female version of Sgt. Carter. Good scenes also as the ever cheap Sgt. Carter is worried about how much the bill will be. He tells Gomer to order tuna fish so they can split it. A man who appears drunk sits with the four, and annoys Sgt. Carter. Sgt. Carter going cheap does not pay off, as the man says he is paying the bill. Later, Sgt. Carter flirts with an attractive hostess, and she asks if he likes Chinese Checkers. Sgt. Carter to the post. When Sqt. Carter admits he gave orders to Pyle to not call him, the by now frustrated Johnson replies "what kind of knucklehead order was that". Ver funny to see Sqt. Carter on the receiving end of "knucklehead". Gomer is fooled into helping the crooks load a truck, but Gomer ends up capturing them in the end, and graciously give the dazed Sqt.Carter(knocked out twice) all the credit. This episode is well written, and features classic exchanges from Sqt. Carter and Gomer.

A couple of service men tell Gomer to do such things as putting his arm band upside down, so people can read it when he raises his arm, and putting his gun belt down to his waist so he can draw easier, etc. Sgt. Carter gets chewed out, and has to find something else for Gomer to do. He determines the back gate would be the easiest assignment, so he sends Gomer there. He tells Gomer no one gets through without an I.D. A Special Council from Washington comes to the gate, and does not have I.D. He becomes angry with Gomer, who rambles on about how it's nothing personal and how the man has a big, friendly face. The man, Mr.Horton, walks through the gate, and Gomer escorts him to jail. Funny scene as Gomer describes to Sgt. Carter, who is on the phone trying to find out where Mr. Horton is, the man he brought in, as Sgt. Carter realizes it is Mr.Horton! Sgt. Carter is not happy with Gomer. Colonel Gray calls Gomer to his office, with Mr. Horton there. He tells Gomer he did everything right. That sets up the best scene, the last scene. Gomer tells Sgt. Carter what the Colonel said, and Sgt. Carter is happy. Then he reads the message from Colonel Gray that Gomer wrote down. Since Sgt. Carter did not approve Gomer's handling of the situation with Mr. Horton, Sgt. Carter will not go on liberty, and instead have to be on guard duty!
