Missions Diary Of Trips Abroad

During the many missionary trips that I made in my early teenage years, I kept an extensive diary of the things that happened. While in Nicaragua, during the Communist revolution that was occuring in Latin America, I was almost killed by machine gun fire outside the Assemblies of God missionary compound in Managua, the capitol city of Nicaragua. Had it not been for missionary, David Spencer throwing me to the ground just prior to an assassination attempt, I would have been killed. The 50 caliber machine gun bullets that fired from a military vehicle, missed me by a breath and killed the military officer walking in front of us. It was a sobering experience for a 14 year old boy to see a military officer assassinated just a couple of feet away.

Our entire YWAM (Youth With A Mission) team was hit by Communist guerillas in the country of Guatemala during a trip to that country in the year of 1964. Louis Vargas was one of the young people captured and tortured by the guerillas and his book, "God's Soldier," details the many heartaches and trials that we all faced during that whole ordeal. You can buy the book at any Christian bookstore. I was so fortunate to have left the lead vehicle just prior to the attack. At the rest stop a few miles before the attack, I had gotten into the last cargo truck and laid down to sleep. I had been driving all night. If you can imagine, I was only 14 years old with a hardship driver's license from the State of Texas. The only place I could get comfortable was hidden among the baggage in the rear of the truck. I was missed in the attack that crippled Vargas and others. They simply didn't find me in their search of the cars and thought no one was in the truck loaded with baggage and provisions for the trip.

And, again later, in Beruit, Lebanon on a missionary trip, I came within seconds of getting killed. The bus that I was riding on completely exploded just seconds after I stepped off of the bus. I was less than a block away when it went up in flames. Several were killed and many were injured. I thank God for every day that I have on this earth. God has spared my life several times in a miraculous way. I have been to the Holy Land and walked on the walls of Jerusalem, prayed at the wailing wall, and visited the city of my great grandparents, Hamburg, Germany. I cried at the "Holocaust Museum," and thought of my family, Jewish immigrants fleeing from their homeland to avoid death at the hands of Hitler. Had they not left Germany when they did, my family wouldn't have this web page up on the web. I have toured Europe, been to the Opera in Vienna, preached on the streets of Paris, France, witnessed on the streets of the world's major cities, and never lost sight of the fact that God loves us all. One of the great things about being a missionary kid is seeing the world at an early age. I recently had the privilege of touring one of the greatest missionary ministries in the world at the Los Angeles International Church. What a ministry to the inner city!

The greatest living experience of my life was in Cairo, Egypt at the pyramids. You start to realize how small you are when you see where we all started. I was overwhelmed by the beauty and also the poverty of Cairo, Egypt. Beggars Square is an experience that will live with me forever. No one really realizes how fortunate they are to live in the United States until they have left it for an extended period of time and lived in another country. We are a blessed nation and a blessed people. I was a blessed young person to have parents that let me experience the world at such an early age.

I'm leaving for another missionary trip

I said the "sinner's prayer," when I was just 10 years old. I had a Sunday School teacher, Ed Sizemore at the First Assembly of God Church in Midland, Texas who was extremely influencial in my early years when I was making decisions about my life. He helped me to avoid a lot of the problems that others were having in school and I focused on the "things I had, " not the "things I didn't have." He taught me to be a positive thinker even at that age.

It was later in my life that I met two profoundly influential friends who also taught me about positive thinking. One was Robert Schuller, the pastor of the Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California and the other was Rex Davey in Plainview, Texas. They both had wonderful positive influences on my life. I grew under the teaching and ministry of Walter and Elsie Kornelsen on the mission field. Missions was my primary goal in life while I developed my music. Music has been the primary goal in my life since I left the ministry and I have enjoyed creating the songs and music of so many great artists and songwriters in Nashville through the years. Music is what soothes the soul of man!
