Derivations of the name are Palmer, Palmar, Paumier. The first references to the name are Sagar Palmer in 1176 in the Pipe Rolls for Devonshire; Ralph le Palmere in the Yorkshire Hundred Rolls of 1273. Richard Palmer who died in 1195 was chief counsellor to William the Bad of Sicily, and was Archbishop of Messina. Thomas Palmer who lived in the early 15th century was a theological writer of note; Wiger le Palmer in 1191 in the Pipe Rolls for Leicestershire; Richard le Paumere in 1198 in the Feet of Fines for Middlesex.

The surname Palmer is derived from the Old French palmer,a name given to a pilgrim to the Holy Land. Once everyone was known by a single name but this led to confusion and so an extra name was adopted. thus a man named John who had been on the pilgrimage might be known as John the Palmer, the additional name eventually becoming hereditary as a surname.

Among early emigrants from England to America was Thomas Palmer who arrived in Virginia in 1621. Elihu Palmer 1736-1806 was an Americian deistical preacher and political agitator.

The arms may be described heraidically as Argent, a chevron between three palmers scrips (sable) the tassels and buckles or crest. A hand grasping a palmers staff proper and for motto PALMA VIRTUTI -- the motto my be translated as "The Palm is for Virtue

Writers of the past have ascribed symbolism to the tinctures and charges of heraldry, thus argent(silver) is said to denote sincerity and sable(black) wisdom. Both the charges on the field and the crest allude to the surname.
