QUESTION
Hi, I wanted to say something about your input on the grinding "problem", I grind all the time but it doesn't allways mean that we want sex. Its a way to make the boys not look stupid, guys can't dance without looking funny at get togethers. I believe in God, infact my family owns a church but what we are doing is just fun, the reason why we do it is because it's a way to express yourself. I also do it because it's a workout but we can always say no to someone who wants to go further. I've never let anyone do something I don't want to do. Please, some people don't believe in what you're doing but does it mean it's wrong? No, we're doing this and people think it's wrong but is it? No! We're having fun, expressing ourselves, showing how we know how to do things, and proving a point, we're not just kids... we have the same minds as grownups, we were just brought into this world by God at a different time. This is how you need to see it.
ANSWER
Thank you so very much for your response on this issue. The best way I see for me to answer your response is to address each statement one at a time.. So With that being said, I’ll try to break each part down.
Your Statement:
I grind all the time but it doesn't allways mean that we want sex
I think you may have missed my point on this issue.. I never said that all people who grind want sex. Let’s take a look at what I said:
“.. grinding is to create the look of a sexually stimulating action. Even the names that are given to this form of dancing have strong sexual insinuations. Think about it, Grinding, grinding what? They don't mean ground beef. Dirty dancing, what is meant by that? Well, They don't mean doing the "Twist" on a muddy floor. We may chuckle at that, but the reality is, the "bumping and grinding" is designed to simulate sex. In fact, there are articles and instructional videos/books explaining grinding as a great way for a man to get a woman or vice versa. These articles and videos instruct the reader/viewer how to grind properly and capture its sexual elements correctly to create a sexual/lustful atmosphere.
Whether one actually sets out to achieve this or not, the point is, this is what grinding means..”……
Now, the argument has been made from some people that, "I'm not thinking of sex or trying to cause sexual stimulation by grinding. I'm just having fun with my friends." OK---I'm willing to concede that an individual at times might not mean anything sexual by it, however, as I said, a believer would still be putting the Spirit of God through it. That in it self should make one decide not to do that. However, just to make the case, I will address this argument anyways.
As you can see, my point was not that all people who grind are looking to have sex but simply that grinding is designed to be a sexual dance. Its name is sexual and its movements are sexual as well. That was and is the main point behind answering whether or not grinding is ok to do in God’s eyes.
Your Next Statement:
Its a way to make the boys not look stupid, guys can't dance without looking funny at get togethers.
Well, I don’t believe for a minute that the only way to help guys dance is to bump and grind their genitals. If what you say is true, then, perhaps by not grinding it would cause more guys to learn how to actually dance. However, I don’t believe this to be the reason behind grinding. I know for certain that there are other ways of dancing without having to create the image of having sex on the dance floor. In fact, men and women have been dancing for many-many years just fine without grinding genitals on the dance floor.
Your Next Statement:
I believe in God, infact my family owns a church but what we are doing is just fun, the reason why we do it is because it's a way to express yourself.
That’s great you believe in God and that your parents own a church. However, that doesn’t change what God’s Word say’s on sexual immorality. Look, I know many people who believe in God and still do things that are contrary to God’s Word, but, just because they believe in God doesn’t mean what they’re doing is right. For that matter, I’m a Christian and I still make mistakes and fall into sin.. We all do… That’s why we need a Savior, because we’re all sinners and fall short of being Pure and Holy on our own.(Romans 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God) Nevertheless, as believers, we need to continue in growing in the Lord and dying to self. (James 1:22 But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves) (2Peter 3:18 but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.)
Now as for it being a way for you to express yourself. I have no problem with the need to express yourself, but what are you trying to express by grinding? Think about it.. From your response, I take it that you’re not looking to do anything wrong by grinding and that you’re not trying to sin against God. Therefore, I would also assume that when you want to express yourself, you want to express something that represent who you are and what you stand for.. How would grinding do that for you? If grinding is a dance designed to look like sex then what message would you be expressing about yourself? Now, I don’t believe that’s the message you’re trying to express.. Simply put-- If it’s designed to be a sexual dance and you do it to express yourself, then that’s the message you would be giving out, even if that’s not what you’re intending to do.
Your Next Statement:
I also do it because it's a workout but we can always say no to someone who wants to go further. I've never let anyone do something I don't want to do.
Dancing is well known for being a great workout and I have no problem with that. I too think it can be a great way to stay in shape and/or lose some weight.. However, a person does not need to grind genitals together on the dance floor to make dancing a good workout. There are plenty of ways to dance and workup a sweat without turning it into sexual simulation. There’s simply no need to take it that far.
As for being able to say “no” if someone wants to go further, well, I’m glad you can keep that control, but you’re missing the point. The point is, why would you want to participate in a dance that could cause someone to desire for you to go further?. You see, even if you don’t desire more, if the other person does then you have helped that person into lustful thoughts. Why would someone want to be apart of causing other people to sin? I don’t think you want to assist in causing people to sin. God’s Word say’s that even if something as simple as a certain food causes someone to sin we shouldn’t eat it. (1 Corinthians 8:13 13Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.) So how much more should we avoid something that might lead a dance partner into sexual lust?
Let’s also take another look at my original response that dealt with another point along these lines:
However, let's just say by chance, all the dance partners are not the least bit sexually aroused by the dance. My question is what about the spectators? Can you know whether these actions are causing someone else watching from the sidelines to sin in their mind? Absolutely not! Now, I suppose the reply might be, "Well, that's not my fault. When I'm grinding it's just for fun, It's not my responsibility how someone views my actions" Well, are they sure about that?
Matthew 5:14;16 Jesus said 14You are the light of the world. .......16Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Ephesians 5:1 Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.
* 1 Corinthians 8:12 12But when you thus sin against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, you sin against Christ.
1 Peter 1:14-16 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, [as] in your ignorance; 15but as He who called you [is] holy, you also be holy in all [your] conduct, 16because it is written, "Be holy, for I am holy."
1 Corinthians 8:13 13Therefore, if food makes my brother stumble, I will never again eat meat, lest I make my brother stumble.
As Christians, we are to be a light in this world, meaning a light to other people. They should see Christ in us and through our good works. It's not only what we say to people but how we live our lives that people will know there is a difference.
Furthermore, can we be "holy in all our conduct" and still grind? That seems impossible to me. Just the type of dance itself seems far from "holy conduct", and then you add the fact that there is a very good chance it's causing others to sin in their mind. Then it gets even further from what we would call, "holy conduct".
Your Next Statement:
Please, some people don't believe in what you're doing but does it mean it's wrong? No,
You’re absolutely correct in that, there are people who do not believe in what we are doing here at T.R.M.. Sadly, there are people who don’t believe in God and there are people who don’t believe that His Holy Word is complete authority. Nevertheless, we at Triumphant Return Ministries believe that God’s Word is Truth! Therefore, we will base our teachings and understanding on God’s Word alone, not man’s beliefs or what’s popular today. The Bible has always been unpopular among unbelievers but that doesn’t mean the Bible should be changed to fit societies beliefs.. You need to understand that this is a Christian Q&A. Therefore, when someone submits a question; we will supply an answer based on God’s Holy Word. If the person does not want a Biblical answer to their question then this would be the wrong place to submit their question.
Your Next Statement:
we're doing this and people think it's wrong but is it? No!
Well, that depends on who you ask.. Again, from a Biblical view, Yes, it is wrong based on the scriptural reasons I gave in my original response. There is no way to say it’s ok for a true believer to participate in a dance that involves the imagery of having sex on the dance floor. There is no passage of scripture that would give a green light to rub genitals together for a workout. So… If a believer wants to know God’s thoughts on the issue than His Word is clear on it.. Sexual immorality is Wrong.. Period...
Your Next Statement:
We're having fun, expressing ourselves, showing how we know how to do things, and proving a point, we're not just kids... we have the same minds as grownups,
“Showing how we know how to do things”? What does Grinding show that “we” can do? Grinding shows that a person knows how to have intercourse. Why would that be something a person would want to announce to the world? What kind of message does that send out to people? Is that the kind of message a believer would want/should be making? Absolutely Not!
Furthermore, what “point” does it prove? It proves people can be sexually immoral and it proves people can go against God’s Word. This is nothing new.. People have been proving this since the beginning of time. Sadly, people will continue going against God’s Word until our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, returns.
Let me also say that grinding genitals on a dance floor does not prove a person has the same mind of a grownup. It only proves they can grind genitals on a dance floor. Nothing more!
Your Last Statement:
we were just brought into this world by God at a different time. This is how you need to see it.
I do see it.. I see a world that has grown further away from God and has compromised to the point that “sexual immorality” has become commonplace in our culture. I see a world that has ignored God’s instructions and warning about sexual immorality and now we’re paying the price by its effects.
Consider this part of my original response:
In the U.S. alone, estimated number of new std cases each year: 70,000 Syphilis, 3 million Chlamydia, 650,000 Gonorrhea, 1 million Herpes, 5.5 million Human Papilloma virus (HPV), 120,000 Hepatitis B, 5 million Trichomoniasis. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that 650,000 to 900,000 U.S. residents are living with HIV infection, of whom more than 200,000 are unaware of their infection. Today, teen pregnancy is through the roof. Almost 1 million teenagers become pregnant each year3, and about (it should say, "unfortunately ONLY") 485,000 give birth.4 That's very sad.
Without doubt, we are paying the price for deciding to do what we want to do and ignoring God's Word.
In Closing,
“Though grinding may not seem like a big deal today because "everyone's doin it". The fact is, it's a big deal to God. He alone is the one we will have to answer to, not our friends. Furthermore, it's just not worth degrading ourselves and committing sexual immorality for a moment of fun.”
As God’s children we a no longer of this world: John 15:19 [Jesus speaking] “If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world,……..” Instead we are to be a light to the world: Matthew 5:16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.
Well, again, I want to thank you for your response to this issue. I hope this has helped you understand better on what God’s Word says on this issue..
