report:
It was a warm October, around 1.30, when the brave souls of the mighty enforcers
took to the pitch for their first taste of BUSA action. They knew the game would
be tough as their opposition were relegated last year from the same division as
the university 3rd team.
The match started with early pressure from the Poly. For the first 5 minutes
only some frantic defending and excellent work by goalkeeper Sorley kept the
scores at 0-0. After this heart stopping period, Sheffield started to impose
some authority on the game. The Leeds team had no answer to the speed and
commitment of the Sheffield team. They struggled to get the ball away from their
half as Sheffield applied the pressure. Then came the first real chance. After
some good work down the right from Holmes-Smith, the ball was delivered with
pace into the D. The first shot was saved by the keeper, but fell to Powell only
5 yards from the line. However his effort only managed to hit the outside of the
post. Sheffield then stepped up a gear. Every time a Leeds player touched the
ball, he was instantly surrounded by 2-3 Sheffield players. However, very little
was created up front. Then in the last few minutes of the half, Leeds again
applied some pressure, but the defense held and th!
e teams went into the break at 0-0.
The second half started well for Sheffield as their offensive pressing
techniques brought another chance which was saved well by the Leeds Keeper from
Powell. Sheffield were by now well and truly on top, using their strength of
squad to keep the rolling substitutes, and hence the commitment levels up. Just
as all thought both teams were tiring and the game was heading for a draw,
Sheffield broke. The ball was slung into the D. The first shot was blocked by a
defender. The rebound fell to Powell. The keeper came out. He shot………It went
through the keepers legs. 1-0 to Sheffield.
Cammish the Sheffield captain realized that there was only 8 mins left to play,
so changed from the attacking 3-5-2 formation to a more defensive 4-4-2. Leeds
applied more and more pressure, searching for that vital equalizing goal, but it
never came. The Mighty 5th team defended resolutely and held on. When the final
whistle went, a deafing cheer went up from the massive crowd. Sheffield
staggered off the pitch, knackered but euphoric as they knew they had deserved
the victory. BUSA take note, the 5’s are here, now is the time to fear!
