Chapter Twenty-Eight
The Staircase To Nowhere

Chris rushed over to Joey’s side after he opened the door. Finding that Joey was
unconscious, he carefully picked him up and started to hurry out of there. The
room was unbearably cold.
“God Joey, what the hell happened to you in here?” Chris said aloud.
Chris got out in the dark hall and looked up and down it, thankful that the
shadows were no where to be found. He shuddered at the memory of them.
Would that be what they would look like if they did not defeat ‘The Game’?
Chris went in the general direction that he thought would lead him to the lower
levels. The hallway wound around in many directions and Chris became tired
quickly from all of the walking and carrying Joey at the same time. More then
once he had to stop and set Joey down to catch his breath.
Just when Chris was losing hope of ever getting out of that hall, he looked ahead
and saw a staircase leading upwards. It was very dark, no lighted candles
leading up from it and the stairs eventually disappeared above. Chris walked up
to it and stared at it for a second, wondering if he should try walking up it. The
staircase was of wood with a red carpet in the middle of it. It had metal bars on
the top and it spun upwards, instead of going straight up like the rest of the
stairs in the place.
Chris set Joey down and tried to wake him once again, not wanting to go up the
dark stairs alone. He knew that he should probably turn back but his curiosity
was winning him over instead.
“Come on Joey, you’ve got to wake up,” Chris said loudly.
Suddenly Joey stirred and his eyes fluttered open. He stared at Chris for a
second, shocked to see him standing there. He blinked and looked up and down
the hall.
“How....did I get...in here?” he said slowly, his voice cracking. The color was
slowly starting to return to him and he seemed to be getting slightly better with
his surroundings.
“I found you in some freezing cold room and took you out of there,” Chris
explained, “I started walking down this hall and found this staircase and thought
maybe we should go up it.”
Joey turned and looked at the staircase, dark and gloomy. “You sure you want to
go up...there? I mean, after everything that had happened.”
Chris nodded slightly. “I think that’s the way back to everyone else any ways.”
Joey looked at him skeptically but started to slowly stand up. “Well, you might be
right. Come on, we better start going or we’ll be in this hall forever, not exactly a
comforting thought.”
The two of them walked over to the stairs and peered up them, having second
thoughts. Finally though, they started to go upwards, their shoes making muffled
noises on the red carpet. The staircase creaked slightly from their weight.
Chris and Joey continued upwards. The staircase wound round and round
endlessly. It was pitch black and more then once they stumbled trying to find the
next stair.
“This is certainly not fun,” Joey muttered.
“Oh shut up, maybe I was wrong,” Chris said back.
“Maybe? Ha...that’s a funny statement.”
Before Chris could reply back a light flickered all of a sudden and they saw a
candle that was lit. The stairway shone eerily around them and the carpet shone
red, deep red, the color of blood.
“Ughh...oh my God,” Chris exclaimed, “look at the floor!”
Joey looked down and saw that the stairs were covered in blood, some of it was
dripping over the sides of the stairs. They looked at their shoes and they were
covered in blood also. Suddenly the smell of blood filled their noses and they
were sickened by it.
“Let’s get out of here,” Joey said, starting to turn around.
Just then, a creak came from the stairs below them. They froze in fear. “Please
say that was you,” Joey asked trembling.
“Umm....no,” Chris answered, just as scared.
The sound of heavy breathing could be heard and the stairs started to creak
even more, as if they could barely contain the thing’s weight.
Joey and Chris spun around and started to race up the stairs. Pounding feet
could be heard coming after them and they tried to go faster. More blood
seemed to be pouring down the stairs, making it harder for them to run. The
stairs kept winding upwards and the thing behind them seemed to be getting
closer.
Suddenly Chris skidded to a stop and Joey almost ran into him. They both looked
down and saw that the stairs had ended and only blackness lay below them. The
sound of feet had stopped but the heavy breathing could still be heard.
“Aww shit, it’s either face that thing back there or jump,” Chris muttered.
“I say we jump,” Joey said, though he sounded very unsure.
A voice rang out behind them, saying, “Your playing time is over.” It was a raspy
sounding voice and it sent chills down their spines.
They didn’t even wait to see what it was, with one last look at each other, Chris
and Joey jumped from the stairs. A sound of anger came out from the thing then
laughter, for it thought they could never survive.
No one survived jumping from the Stairs that led to Nowhere.
