THE TOWN AND THE BEACH OF VOLOS IN PELION OR PILION IN GREECE

Nederlands map of Pilion or Pelion Volos is a fairly large city and a major port which is located on the Pagasetic Gulf. It is the capital of the area known as Magnesia, which includes the Pelion peninsula. After an earthquake in 1955 in which many buildings were destroyed, Volos was almost entirely rebuilt and the city is therefore largely a modern place. In Volos live about 145,000 people and after Piraeus and Thessaloniki it is the third largest port in Greece. The town has an international airport and is therefore important for tourism.

Besides a major industrial port Volos is also a starting point for some island hoppers that want to visit the the Sporades islands (Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonissos), or for people that want to combine the Pelion Peninsula with these islands. The only beach in Volos itself is located on the southeastern side of the city. This beach is called Anavros Beach. It is a sandy beach that has been awarded the Blue Flag and there are some umbrellas and sunbeds for rent. In the area of Volos you can also find other beaches, including the beach of Alykes, which is situated at 9 kilometers distance and 5 kilometers long. For ferry tickets - click here.

Volos is built in an area where formerly stood ancient cities. West of the town are the remains of the Neolithic settlement of Dimini where an acropolis and tombs have been found from the period from 4000 to 1200 BC. In Sesklio the oldest acropolis in Greece (from 6000 BC) was found, along with the foundations of a palace and houses. In the construction of Volos also Mycenaean settlements were found.
