THE RESTAURANTS AND TAVERNAS ON THE ISLAND OF MILOS IN THE CYCLADES IN GREECE

To be honest we did not have high expectations of the food we would find on our way when we went for a visit to the island of Milos, but we were wrong. Not only did we like this island more than we thought we would, we also were surprised by the quality of the food in the restaurants we visited. I have made a little list as usual of the places where we had lunch or diner, but unfortunately it is a very short list. Restaurant Gialos in Pollonia is to blame! The food here was so good we kept going back...in 2014 we visited some others to compare, so the list is growing.... Apparently there is another very good restaurant in Pollonia (always busy) on an corner at the sea. It's a seafood restaurant. We planned to go there one evening but somehow it didn't happen. Maybe on your next visit to the island...yip, in the meantime we had dinner there. Please note these are our personal experiences and you might disagree and think differently. This doesn't mean I will change my opinion.

Milos restaurants: Archontoula Restaurant in Plaka - fabulously good food!!

This restaurant is located on a square in the old town of Plaka, not far from the first large church you encounter as you walk into the village. There are not that many restaurants in the village of Plaka and the restaurant is famous on the island, so all inhabitants of the village can tell you where to find it. The Archontoula Restaurant was tipped to us by several local people as being very good and after our visit we understood why and had to agree. The food here is really fantastic: Greek traditional but with a twist. It tastes as good as it looks: beautiful. All the dishes arrive at our table looking like some kind of artwork, asif Picasso is working in the kitchen, and they are proudly presented. The owner herself works in the restaurant and serves the tables. She obviously enjoys her work and is proud of the food that is served. She is very friendly and has a lot of humor. In the kitchen they are working very professional. All the dishes on our table, without exception, taste wonderful. Highly recommended this restaurant. Other restaurants should watch and learn: excellent food served with a smile. Our verdict: fabulously good, a 10 out of 10

Milos restaurants: Gialos Restaurant in Pollonia - scandalously good!

Pollonia and actually all of Milos should be proud of this excellent restaurant on their island. No "Maria" behind the stove here, but a professional cook with a diploma and a whole team of staff, both in the kitchen and on the terrace. Modest and friendly chef Achilleus created a number of original salads, appetizers and main courses. Here is someone who likes good food and takes pleasure in cooking and baking for other people. He plans to put other new things on the menu every year and asks people their reaction to his dishes. After a meal you do not often ask to see the cook for a moment so you can thank him. Here we did. Achilleus runs the restaurant with the very friendly and charming Christos and quite a few other people, because it is almost always busy. One of the waiters is handsome Dyonissos: no wonder the food is so divine here and the wine tastes to good.

Some of our favorites: the salad with the dried tomatoes or the one with the fruits, the eggplant salad, the Cyprian pita with beef, the shrimps and the penne with chicken. If you order a bottle of wine flirtatious Christos will will come with a cooler and he will join you at your table ;) haha.. Our verdict: a super restaurant with a super cook and the friendliest of service, a shame though that after two years the menu seems to have been unchanged and they are still serving the same dishes. And this when they told us they were planning to put new dishes on the menu each year. We didn't see them while we hoped for innovation: a 9,5 out of 10

Milos restaurants: Armenaki Fish Taverna in Pollonia - very good!!

The visitors of Pollonia are so spoiled: the best seafood restaurant on the island is also in this village. Like the Archontoula Restaurant in Plaka the name of the Armenaki Fish Taverna also was mentioned several times when we asked residents of the island what were the best restaurants on Milos. Armenaki is situated on a corner on the beach of Pollonia, just next to the promenade where most other restaurants are in a row. Damask tablecloths and napkins and a big smile of the girl bringing us the menu :), it promisses to be good. The promise is indeed fulfilled: the service is very friendly, the restaurant has class and the fish is filleted at the table. I order a fish fillet myself so for me this is not necessary. Everything tastes great, including the vegetable dish and garlic dip that we ordered there. We will be back.... Our verdict: very good, an 9,5 out of 10

Milos restaurants: Araxovoli Taverna in Pollonia

This restaurant is situated at the beginning of the boulevard where the restaurants of Pollonia ar in a row on the water. We ordered a special omelette with olives, peppers, bacon, feta, tomatoes and a onion. It actually has a very good flavor but it takes a long time before it finds its way to the table, while it really is not that busy. The bread unfortunately is a bit dry and that is what we call a missed opportunity because the baker is ten meters away. There is also no butter. However a very good cappuccino a very friendly service. Our verdict: good: an 8 out of 10

Milos restaurants: Armira Fish Restaurant in Pollonia

The Armira Fish Taverna is (according to us, in 2014) a new restaurant in Pollonia and is also close to the promenade, situated on a corner. We order a fish and I take the shrimp saganaki. A friendly guy takes our order and I must say the food is also very tasty here. The salad with a small cheese on top also tastes fine. No damask tablecloths here like in Armenaki, but the taste of the food comes close. I think they will see us here again some day. Our verdict: very good, a 9 out of 10

Milos restaurants: Ageliki Restaurant in Adamas

A snackbar / ice cream parlour in the harbour of Adamas. They serve ice cream, coffee, sandwiches, pastries and simple dishes. We just have a cappuccino and a toast with ham, cheese and tomatoe here. The coffee is good and strong and it comes with a glass of cold water. No complaints about the food or the service. The toilets are clean and everything works automatically: the lights go on as you walk in and if you want to dry your hands the paper rolls out automatically too...how hygienic... Our verdict: good, an 8 out of 10

Milos restaurants: O Kinigos Taverne in Adamas

This nice restaurant is located at the port of Adamas. After we ordered our food we get a free tasty appetizer of lentils with tomato and fresh herbs. The bread is delicious and fresh. We order the tomato balls, artichokes, cheese balls and Greek salad. All food tastes great and there is really nothing negative to say about it. Maybe just a little better than the restaurants around it? Ons oordeel: rather good, an 8,5 out of 10

Milos restaurants: Flisvos Taverne in Adamas

This taverna is also situated in the port of Adamas, right next to the O Kinigos Taverna. We order a cappuccino, a salad with small tomatoes and parmesan cheese, meatballs and cheese saganaki. The cappuccino we get has whipped cold milk on it, the salad has little taste and no dressing, but the meatballs and the saganaki are okay. The fries are not crunchy. It's not a bad restaurant but in Adamas we have visited better ones. Our verdict: reasonable, a 7 out of 10

Milos restaurants: Aktaion Taverne in Adamas

Taverne situated in the harbor of Adamas near the taxi stand, comfortable chairs. Okay we have only been drinking a cappuccino here, but that was perfectly fine: good and strong and with hot whipped milk, glass of water on the side, friendly service .... Our verdict: good, an 8 out of 10

Milos restaurants: Restaurant Yankos in Adamas

Large restaurant in Adamas where you see the big fish bowls. We order a hamburger and a special club sandwich (or "sandwitch" as it states on their menus), but they have many other entrees, omelettes, pastries, crepes and pizza. The cappuccino that we ordered is accompanied by a plate with delicious cake and some cookies, plus a bottle of water. It's a good strong cup of coffee. The food tastes very good and the fries are actually very crisp and warm. Two years later we come back though and think the food has become less attractive and we feel disappointed: no crispy fries and a so-so club sandwich. Our verdict: reasonable to good, a 7,5 out of 10

Milos restaurants: Restaurant Cafe Muses in Provatas Beach

Simple but honest and good Greek food in this restaurant on the beach of Provatas. The menu is not extensive but when we are there the holiday season hasn't really started yet. The Greek salad is okay, with some very tasty fêta cheese on it and the tzatziki is nicely thick with plenty of garlic, just the way we like it. We also have something with fried Milos cheese in it which tastes very good. The bread is freshly baked. Our verdict: good, an 8 out of 10
