Old Fountain Villas - Galatas - Crete

Palia Vrisi is the name of the area where the villas are situated. It means "old fountain" and this is because the people that live in Galatas and around used to come here for their water. We stayed at one of the three Old Fountain Villas in September 2008. They are situated in a very green area near the villages of Galatas and Stalos, not far away from the town of Chania on the route to Kissamos Kastelli. There are a couple of signs on the route that will lead you to the villas. You take the exit "Galatas" than drive towards the village. You have to turn right after a while because you bump into a one way street. You are driving towards Galatas. After a few meters there is a "fork" in the road. One sign leads to Galatas, the other one leads to "Vatos 2". You have to follow the Vatos sign on your right. After a while you will see a STOP sign. Here you turn right again. Keep driving untill you will see three signs together on a pole. One of them says "Old Fountain Villas" (the one on the top). You turn right here and follow the small road, keep to the right and at the end turn left following the asfalt: you're there.

Sounds complicated: the owner Helen picked us up at the exit of Galatas, so in case you don't want to try this than you can do as we did. She is very friendly and her english is perfect!

There are three different villas on the estate and Helen and her husband also have a house there. All the villas are detached and have their own garden and private pool and they are different in size.

The villa at Palia Vrisi (Palia Vrisi meaning: Old Fountain)

We stayed in the largest of the villas for four days. Helen showed us around the building and there were home made cookies, grapes from the garden and a caraf of raki (traditional Cretan drink) for us to enjoy.

Upstairs was the very large kitchen / diner with a large couch and a table and chairs. The kitchen had a coffee machine, pots and pans, cutlery, glasses, plates and all sorts of things you might want to use in case you wanted to prepare your own meal. There was a cooker and there was a dish washer. Next to the kitchen/ diner was a small study corner and there were two bedrooms and two bathrooms. The ceiling was very high and pointed, following the shape of the roof, and made of wood. The windows and the doors in the bedrooms all had musquito nets in front of them and there was airconditioning. The doors from the kitchen / diner lead to a very large covered terrace with table and chairs to have your meal and with another 4 comfortable chairs and a coffee table.

Downstairs is the large living room with a very large couch, two more chairs and the tv (put the tv on "av" and then use the remote of the satelite receiver to move the channels up and down). Here there are also two more bedrooms and another bathroom.

The sliding doors here lead you to another terrace with some seats and a after a few stairs more you will find yourself in the beautiful swimming pool with its sunbeds, umbrellas and another sitting area. On every terrace and also from the pool you have views over the green valley in front of the house towards the sea.

Around the Old Fountain Villas

The Old Fountain Villas are situated on a hill that looks out over a green valley and the sea. A walk through this valley will take you along olive trees and orange trees. You will also see avocado trees and wild grapes, berries and fig trees. It is a quiet valley with many birds that are attracted by all the wild berries. In the middle there is a small water stream.

In the villages of Galatas and Vatos you can find the mini markets, shops and plenty of tavernas. The town of Chania with its historical center and several beaches (Daratsos, Kato Stalos and Agia Marina) are also a short drive away from the villas.

Nearby the town of Galatas, there is an area called Palia Vrisi (Old Fountain). The region is named Palia Vrisi because years ago it contained an old fountain that the people of Galatas visited to secure water for themselves and their crops. Although the years have passed and the area no longer provides water for the village, the region still maintains a distinct and authentic atmosphere.

Our three villas are located in this special place, where the sea and the mountain breeze meet. The villas were carefully built to compliment the natural beauty of the surrounding area. They provide stunning views of the Gulf of Hania, the White Mountains, the city of Hania and the valley of Palia Vrisi. They contain a variety of trees, aromatic plants and bushes, as well as, various species of birds. Every step was taken to preserve the natural environment and ensure that the villas are in complete harmony with the surroundings. As a result, our villas offer unsurpassed luxury and comfort within an eco-friendly environment.

The three new villas are situated on 7.000 sq/m of land. Olive trees, lemon trees, almond trees and orange trees including very rare century old cider trees surround the villas. Built on a hill, the views from the villas are incredible. There are panoramic views of the Gulf of Hania , the White Mountains and the city of Hania . To ensure complete privacy, the grounds of each villa are separated by stonewalls and olive trees. The landscaping includes various kinds of flowers, bushes and herbs. There is also a beautiful rose garden and extensive areas of grass for recreational use.

Each villa has its own private pool and outdoor sunbathing area. The private pool space contains a table with an umbrella, chairs and several sunbathing beds. The pool area also contains an outdoor shower and stone barbeque grill.

Each villa is fully furnished with a custom-made dining table, chairs and entertainment center. The living room for each villa has a large sofa that turns into a comfortable bed. All kitchens are fully equipped with a full size stove, dishwasher and refrigerator. Each villa also comes equipped with full TV satellite service and complete Internet access.
