Magpies track
Woodgate progress
Newcastle are
stepping up their interest in Leeds' Jonathan Woodgate
after sending a scout to watch him in action against Bolton on Monday.
Magpies boss Sir Bobby Robson is well aware of Leeds' stretched
finances and could see Woodgate as a possible solution to United's
well-publicised defensive problems.
With Jaap Stam insisting he wants to stay in Italy with Lazio and
Chelsea duo John Terry and William Gallas seemingly not for sale,
Robson is considering whether England star Woodgate is a viable
target.
The 22-year-old is highly rated within the game, having returned to
the England fold after a turbulent two years, and the Magpies may be
able to get him for a knock-down price.
Newcastle also have Nigerian stopper Isaac Okoronkwo training with
them at present with a view to a £2m move form Shakhtar Donetsk.
But Okoronkwo's lack of height, just under 6ft, could yet convince
Robson that he must look elsewhere for the defensive leader he lacks.
