Woodgate - a class
act
Jonathan Woodgate's
excellent performances in the early part of the
2002-03 campaign were justly rewarded by his inclusion in the England
side that faced Slovakia in Bratislava last Saturday and when he kept
his place in the team that met Macedonia on Wednesday night.
While most reports suggested that Woodgate would step down with the
return of Arsenal's Sol Campbell who would partner Middlesbrough
defender Gareth Southgate, www.lufc.com claimed the 22-year-old would
play and Southgate would miss out.
England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson didn't disappoint and neither did
Woodgate, who put Campbell to in the shade with a virtuoso
performance.
But this will come as no surprise to Leeds fans and the Opta stats
supports Eriksson's choice who clearly sees Woodgate as his number
three defender and possibly after last night his number two behind a
certain Rio Ferdinand or maybe as the stats prove the number one.
