Norman backs United duo

United legend Norman Hunter is confident Lee Bowyer and Jonathan
Woodgate will prove themselves worthy of their England places after
being called up for the first time by Sven Goran Eriksson.
The pair were both excluded from England duty during their assault
trial and missed out on the chance to travel to the World Cup, but
Hunter says they deserve their call and is backing them to impress
against Portugal.

"Lee Bowyer should have been in ages ago," said Norman, "I couldn't
believe he didn't go to the world cup in the summer.

"He's gone back into his favoured role which is central midfield and
Lee has been playing as well as anybody and he deserves his chance
because he's getting better and better.

"The only way you can find out whether he can do it at international
level is to stick him in there.

"I am sure that what Sven has seen of him he has been very impressed
and I don't think Lee will be over-awed when he makes his full debut.
He loves his football and I am sure that he will become a regular
international."

"I'm delighted for Woody because he and Rio Ferdinand could be the
backbone of the England defence for a lot of years."

Whilst Bowyer and Woodgate's call-up is certain to dominate the
headlines, Norman is equally pleased for Alan Smith and Paul
Robinson, both of whom have been key men for United this season.

"I am delighted for Alan smith and Paul Robinson because they've done
extremely well,

"Smith has been out of position playing wide on the right but has
worked very hard, and Robinson has played especially well and in any
other Premiership side would have been in earlier, now he's got his
chance."
