Woody told to
forget England
TERRY VENABLES has
told Jonathan Woodgate to forget about an England
recall and concentrate on his Leeds career first.
The boss, who is growing tired of hearing Woodgate compared to former
United defender Rio Ferdinand in the media all the time, wants Woody
to knuckle down and concentrate on his fitness.
The 22-year-old started his first game against West Bromwich Albion
on Saturday, but was replaced by Lucas Radebe minutes into the second
half with Venables noticing he was beginning to tire.
Venables recognises the talent at his disposal, but also needs to
keep him level-headed.
"Jonathan Woodgate started the season very well, but injuries have
knocked him back a bit, but what I have seen of him I am delighted,"
said Terry.
"I wouldn't even put the whole Rio comparison thing in his mind,
Rio's gone and we're thinking about Woodgate who is his own man.
"As for England, I don't think he should be thinking about England at
the moment, he's got to be thinking about himself and Leeds, if does
that he'll be alright when needed."
Venables revealed that Woodgate had slightly re-opened his knee
injury again, but felt compelled to give him his first game after
Lucas Radebe missed a few days of training through injury. He feels
he'll have to take a softly-softly approach with both of them until
fully fit.
"They're both ok we're just being very cautious," added Terry, "we've
got a long way to go and I have to think about the both of them."
