Daniel's Cricket Ratings (PriceWaterhouseCoopers Ratings)

Tests: 19th (+1) (bowlers)

ODIs: 21st (+1) (bowlers)

Okay, where do I begin? If you don't know, Daniel Vettori made his test debut for New Zealand on 6 February 1997. In doing so, he became the youngest test cricketer for New Zealand, being 18 years and 10 days of age. Naturally, this generated a lot of attention, something Vettori doesn't particularly enjoy but he admits that "it comes with the territory". Would you enjoy it?

He is currently a world record holder - for becoming the youngest spinner to claim 100 test wickets when he snared Australia's Damien Martyn. Another reason for the attention.

He has been mainly out of the New Zealand squad this season due to two back injuries. He injured his back in the second test against Australia and came back for the Black Caps in Zimbabwe. This comeback was shortlived.

He got another back injury and returned home for treatment. He came back for the ODIs against Sri Lanka in January/February and against Pakistan in February. During the fourth ODI against Pakistan at Christchurch, his back flared up again. He was questionable for the ODI at Dunedin but played.

He is currently recovering from this latest back injury and may be back for the tour of Pakistan in July (I think).

What people sometimes forget is that Vettori is only 22 years of age. He is mature for his age and New Zealand need him back in the team as he is a "potent" weapon of attack. He may have a 20 year career but with his back, he may not play for New Zealand for that long. He could retire at 38 or 28.
