Welcome to 'Neigh School' Here we will explain and show animations of the common movements carried out when schooling horses.




Basic Paces
The four basic paces of the horse are walk, trot, canter and gallop.

Walk
The walk has a four time beat where the horse picks up and puts down each leg in sequence.

Trot
The trot has a two time beat where the horse moves its legs in diagonal pairs, the off fore and near hind together followed by the near fore and off hind together.

Canter
The canter has a three time beat where the sequence of footfalls begins with a hind leg, followed by (in a pair) the other hind leg and the diagonally opposite foreleg, and lastly the remaining foreleg.

Gallop
The gallop has a four time beat and the horse picks up and puts down each leg in sequence as in the walk, but much more quickly.
