Horses can be unpredictable at times as it is in their nature. This
is what makes riding and keeping horses so interesting! However, it
can also lead to accidents, especially if someone inexperienced is
given a horse they are unable to control.
In a world where more and more people are suing for compensation after
personal injuries, the implications of accidents are much greater
than they used to be. Riding schools and other training establishments
are particularly at risk. No matter how careful the proprietor is
to ensure inexperienced riders are put on the safest horses, one can
never be 100% safe on horse-back.
However, these establishments are covered by insurance, so they do
have some back-up should an incident occur. But what about private
horse owners, and those of you who ride for other people? Horse insurance
is not compulsory, yet many of us ride out on dangerous roads without
it. Should it be compulsory to have insurance if you ride on public
roads? Maybe, but you could argue that cyclists do not have to have
insurance, so why should horse riders.
Have you been unfortunate enough to be involved in an incident where
legal action was taken? Do you think insurance should be compulsory
for riding on public roads?
Whatever your views, we would like to hear them on the
