STEELDOGS KEEP ON ROLLIN'
One week removed from their first playoff victory in team history, the Birmingham Steeldogs continued their postseason success for a second week. The Steeldogs defeated the Tulsa Talons, 53-34, in front of 3,535 fans at the Tulsa Convention Center.
The win marked the sixth consecutive road victory for the Steeldogs, and their second in the postseason. Moreover, the win propels the Steeldogs into the National Conference Championship; facing the Peoria Pirates, who advanced with a 22-12 win over San Diego, at the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex on Saturday night. With a win, Birmingham would snap a three game home losing streak, as well as receive a berth in the ArenaCup championship game.
Tulsa, the af2’s highest scoring offense, was held to 34 points in 50 plays. Quarterback Anthony Buich could not decipher the Steeldogs defense, finishing 17 of 40, for 201 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. The aforementioned defense was lead by DS Eldrick Hill, who finished with 5˝ tackles, and a pass break-up.
The Steeldogs offense, lead by QB Montressa Kirby, enjoyed much success against the Talons’ much maligned pass defense. Kirby finished 21 of 31, for 296 yards, and six touchdowns. OS Herman Bell led all Steeldogs receivers with six catches for 53 yards and four touchdowns.
Kirby’s performance earned him the game’s MVP honors, while Hill garnered the Defensive Player of the Game award. The Ironman was Steeldogs WR/DB Anthony Jordan.
