Persuasive Essay: “For or Against College Acceptance Standards”
This essay a new type of essay, it is a persuasive essay in which I had to use evidence to persuade a reader to what I am trying to support. A “Productive Individual” is represented in this essay because I am able to support information to make a reader persuaded towards MY idea. A strength I had in this essay is giving tough categories in my thesis in which already gives the reader an idea of what I will write about. A weakness is that I need to be more specific with my examples. I attempted to grasp all areas of examples to why GPAs are not the only thing that should be used for college acceptance as a new strategy. In my next essay I want to be more specific so it will be effective to prove my point.
Why letters don’t Mean So Much These Days
There can be no doubt that getting into any university is more complicated than it was in the last two decades. Academic achievements in schools like high GPA’s are not only a minimal factor that colleges in universities will come across when they analyze a pre-student’s application. Grade Point Averages are significant factors that aid people into getting in a certain college there are other requirements that are specific between different colleges. To get into a certain university, a student must have a firm standing GPA, participation in their school’s clubs or community, and contribute to their school’s sport programs or contest. A person who has been pulling straight A’s and does not do anything else will not be so happy when they are turned down to attend Stanford.
The Grade Point Average of a student can determine a student’s strong points and a student’s weak point. A foreign exchange student that has a weak point in English can have A’s in Science and Mathematics without much of a problem. If this student wants to attend a university, he can choose not to attend any English or English Literature class but an Astronomy class or Advanced Calculus. A college in the field of Science and Mathematics will gladly accept this foreign student regardless of how poor he/she does in English. Students who attend Eastlake High School and are enrolled in the Compact for Success will have to work on their GPA’s for assurance that they are able to join SDSU. The minimum GPA is a 3.0 but if the Eastlake Students in the Compact for Success do not come close to this requirement then they cannot be allowed in SDSU. Programs like the Compact for Success and other programs help students into a certain university that standards to attend a college in a university, there are further requirements that need to be done like extracurricular activity.
Participating in community service and joining school organizations is effective for enrolling in a college that wants these requirements. Students who spend part of their time cleaning up the park, or feeding the homeless in a homeless shelter shows how dedicated a student can be. Doing this entire work doe’s not just look good on an application but it proves to a college professor how much dedication a student can give to the community. Dedication in clubs is also apparent when an ASB student takes hours off their own time to raise money and decorate a dance hall for a Sweethearts dance. The effort that ASB student gives will also be there in a college classroom studying about Speech or any other subject. That student has a better chance of getting into UCSD than a student who does not commit to the community. Many of the same concepts can be found in sports and contest.
Sports and contest has been an important factor that facilitates paying for college. A student enrolled in Bonita who has been in their football team for four years and never played a game seriously proves the devotion he has for football. His devotion will impress college enrollers who seek student that commit to something like this. If that student did play and is the all time best in Bonita, then scholarships and college invitations can come right at his/her door. Contest like a science fair or and essay writing contest aids a student’s strong point. Contest can give out scholarships to whoever win and that scholarship can pay for part of the college money and also show the strong points in that student. The student can be able to join a writing class or literature class easier than a student who just had an A+ in regular English. These types of contest are supported by government funds that confirms them which students is worthy of attending a certain university.
Harvard and other colleges cannot solely choose which student attends their school depending on GPA’s because extracurricular activities are equally essential for acceptation. The lesser known shoddy colleges are the ones that only look at GPA’s. Colleges have to let people in for the reasons of why they want to be successful and persevere in life. Grade Point Averages demonstrates a student who is well-behaved and conveys their will of effort in class, but it does not demonstrate how well you do in college. The number one factor colleges should look at is your desire of reception in college.
