Adding to silica

Boil away the acetone. Cool, add a little (half a ml or so of fresh acetone). Add to a little silica, drop by drop, allowing the acetone to evaporate every now and then. Finally dry completely, and scrape off the watchglass.

Prepare the column

Make up a pasteur pipette as outlined. Silica deactivated with 15% water is used.

Add napthta to the top of the pipette. Use a teat to pressurise the liquid (air pressure). A yellow band starts to move downwards. When the level of the liquid reaches the top cotton plug, stop pressurising and remove teat, without causing a vacuum. (This will suck air from the bottom of the pipette!). Add another lot of naphtha and repeat. Continue
