Using Your Reverse Lights as Turn Signals
Last Updated: October 5, 2002
-- UNDER CONSTRUCTION --

Disclaimer: The instructions below are what I did to my car and can be used as a "guide" for working on yours. But, I take no responsibility for what you decide to do to your car. Be sure to read through all of the instructions first before doing anything to your vehicle.

Purpose: Allows you to separate the turn signal from the brake lights in the back and install a separate turn signal. Or you can do what I did and use the reverse/back up lights as your turn signal and still keep you reverse lights functional.

Application: 1st Generation '95-'99 Dodge Neons

Time Required: ~1 hr

Scale of Difficulty: 1 (5 being the hardest)

Cost: ~$15

Tools Required:

INSTRUCTIONS
This idea was taken from GuaNu's website and can be found HERE. I just went a little more in depth and added the part of using the reverse lights.

-- Separating the Brake and Turn Signals --

1. Remove the lower dash piece below the steering column by taking out the (5) phillips head screws (4 along the bottom and 1 on the left near the fuse panel). Now you can pull it out from the (2) clips holding it in and set it aside.

2. Remove the (2) plastic halves covering the steering column by taking out the (3) phillips head screws from underneath.

3. Above the steering column on the left you'll see a bunch of wires going to the turn signal lever assembly. Find the light tan wire w/ a brown stripe and cut it. Tape both ends so it doesn't short out on anything and reassemble your dash.

Now, you shouldn't have any brake lights in the rear.

-- Wiring the Brake Lights --

1. Go to the trunk and pull down the carpet on the driver's side. If you follow the wires from the trunk lid into the trunk, you will see a connector w/ a red tab. There are usually (3) wires in this connector: Black = Ground, Grey = Remote Trunk Release, Light Tan w/ Brown stripe = Brake light.

2. Splice a new wire (red) into the light tan w/ brown stripe and run it to where your driver's side tailight is. Splice another wire (red) into this one and run it over to the passenger's tailight.

3. Take the brake light socket out of the tailight and cut the MAJOR wire (make sure to leave enough wire on the connector). Splice the new brake light wire (red) to the MAJOR wire coming out of the brake light socket.

Your brake lights should now work, but no turn signals.

-- Wiring the Turn Signals --

-- If you want to use a 3rd separate socket as your turn signal then do this:

1. Drill the hole where you want to mount you new socket and make sure it fits good so that moisture will not get inside.

2. There should only be (2) wires to hook up the 3rd socket. Connect the ground wire of the 3rd socket to the GROUND wire of the driver's side brake light. And connect the power wire of the 3rd socket to the wire that used to go to the MAJOR in the brake light. (see schematic)

3. Put both sockets back in the tailight, hide the wires and put the carpet back. Do the same thing on the passenger's side and you're all done !!

-- If you want to use the reverse/back up lights as your turn signal then do this:

1. Take the reverse light socket out of the tailight and cut the (2) GROUND & MAJOR wires going to the socket.

2. Get out your new 85885 socket *LOOKING FOR A DIFFERENT SOCKET* *UPDATES SOON*w/ 3 wires and connect the GROUND to GROUND, MINOR to the wire that used to go to the MAJOR in the old reverse bulb socket, and the new MAJOR to the wire that used to go to the MAJOR in the brake light. (see schematic)

3. Put both the sockets back in the tailight, hide the wires and put the carpet back. Do the same thing on the passenger's side and you're all done !!

I highly recommend soldering all connections and wrapping them w/ electrical tape to make sure everything is connected good and nothing will short out.
