1. She grew up in Detroit’s projects, and had to get parental permission to join a singing group called the Primettes. The group changed its name and had several hits on the pop charts, including six #1 hits between 1964 and 1965. She left the group to enjoy a solo career and got an Oscar nomination for playing Billie Holiday. In 2000, she attempted a largely unsuccessful reunion tour with two members of her old group, who happened to join after she left. Her autobiography was called Secrets of a Sparrow.


2. With other Protestants he left England for Holland in 1609, searching for religious freedom. Eleven year later he sailed to New England where he became governor of the colony they established. He also wrote a detailed history of the colony, which wasn’t published in its entirety until 200 years after his death. He is credited with starting the Thanksgiving holiday in 1621.


3. In 1937, he became the first European director of CBS news, just in time to cover the growing tensions of World War II. His on-the-scene reports on the war earned him a reputation as a compelling and truthful reporter. Known for smoking a cigarette, he became a familiar face on television with 2 memorable shows. He covered controversial issues, like the Communist hunts of Senator Joseph McCarthy, on See It Now. His other notable show was Person to Person where he interviewed Fidel Castro, Marilyn Monroe, and others in their own homes.



4. Both spiritualists in a medicine show, she and her sister set up their own brokerage firm, with the help of Cornelius Vanderbuilt, in New York. The sisters also set up a newspaper and supported legalized prostitution. In 1872, she was the first woman to run for the presidency. Her running mate was ex-slave Frederick Douglass.



5. His novels dealt with life under the oceans and at the center of the earth. After studying law in Paris, he went on to write and publish his first work in 1863. His books tell of many scientific breakthroughs that became reality, like television and air conditioning.
