For Teachers

California Standards: For 6th grade students in Language Arts classes:

Students will need to know how to type their essays before they go into the 7th grade, so you are the one who will need to give them their jump start on the process. Sections 1.4-1.6 will work really well with computers.

Writing

1.0 Writing Strategies
Students write clear, coherent, and focused essays. The writing exhibits students' awareness of the audience and purpose. Essays contain formal introductions, supporting evidence, and conclusions. Students progress through the stages of the writing process as needed.

A progress students need to know how to do is typing their essays. That should be the next step in the process of their writing. It might be a helpful if they type their rough draft on the computer and turn it in to you. One it would be easier to read and second it would be easier for the student to go back to make corrections if there is any.

Organization and Focus
1.1 Choose the form of writing (e.g., personal letter, letter to the editor, review, poem, report, narrative) that best suits the intended purpose.

This is where, in Microsoft Word there would be templates that would teach the students how to set up the proper forms. You as the teacher would assist the students when they needed help. Sometimes it is best to explain in brief and let them learn on their own. This does not always work, it is just a suggestion.

1.2 Create multiple-paragraph expository compositions:
a. Engage the interest of the reader and state a clear purpose.
b. Develop the topic with supporting details and precise verbs, nouns, and adjectives to paint a visual image in the mind of the reader.
c. Conclude with a detailed summary linked to the purpose of the composition.

1.3 Use a variety of effective and coherent organizational patterns, including comparison and contrast; organization by categories; and arrangement by spatial order, order of importance, or climactic order.

Research and Technology

1.4 Use organizational features of electronic text (e.g., bulletin boards, databases, keyword searches, e-mail addresses) to locate information.

Teach the students here how to brows the Internet with search engines. Key words are very helpful and are normally the best option for to find information.

1.5 Compose documents with appropriate formatting by using word-processing skills and principles of design (e.g., margins, tabs, spacing, columns, page orientation).

I clearly showed how to operate Microsoft Word and the basics you would use to write a paper at the 6th grade level.

Evaluation and Revision
1.6 Revise writing to improve the organization and consistency of ideas within and between paragraphs.

A computer would come in handy and goes back to the top ,where I clearly explained that it would be best if they typed their rough drafts. So it would be easier to make corrections later. They are able to cut, paste, and drag items.
