  Primary Source

Homer. Translated: Fagles, Robert. The Odyssey. New York: Penguin Books. 1996.

            This is a primary source, written in the 300 or 400 B.C. by Homer. This is the journey of Odysseus after the Trojan War. It gives different women's role in the book, like his faithful wife, Penelope, the nymph Calypso, the Princess that he meets, and his faithful old servant, Eurypedia.

Homer. Translated: Butler, Samuel. The Iliad. New York: Barnes and Nobles Books. 1995.

            This book retells the classical epic poem written by Homer, it is translated into paragraph form. In the book it talks about the things that happened during the Trojan War, between Greece and Troy. This cook doesn't really focus that much on women, it's mainly about the hero Achilles.

Lynn, Schnurnberger. Let There Be Clothes. Workman Publishing; New York, 1991.

            This book gave me a schedule of what a normal day in life for an Ancient Greek Women would be like, it tells you more about what the ancient Greek women feels while going on their lives. And each chore the women does, how she feel about it.

Nardo, Jon. Life in Ancient Greece. San Diego: Lucent Books, 1996.

            This book gives information on how people live in the Ancient Greece, including men and women. It tells us the women rights and responsibilities, which is exactly what we need for our topic. Also, it tells us how people of different class live like.

 Powell, Anton. Ancient Greece. New York: Facts on Life, 1989.

            This book tells us basically how people lived in different regions of Ancient Greece because there are different customs at different places. The womenˇ¦s lives are included in the different regions, like in Athena, Sparta, Mycenae, and exc. Also, it gives us examples of famous women at that time.

Powell, Anton. The Greek World. New York: Warwick Press, 1987.

            This book gives a lot of information on great events that happens in Ancient Greek and also the daily lives of the Greeks. This book contains many pictures of artifacts and maps. There is a very useful timeline on page 13 and information on women on page 39-39.

Baker, Rosalie F, and Charles F. Baker III. Ancient Greeks. New York: Oxford University Press, 1997.

     This is a very useful book because it gives us famous Ancient Greeks put in a time period who have made a difference in the Ancient Civilization. It gives us a full description of the people that are mentioned in this book.

            This is a section I found in the Britannica Encyclopedia that explains about the Greek laws back in the ancient times. It mainly talks about justice.

          This website counts as a reference section. The World Factbook contains information on all of the countries. I found many information about the present day Greece such as the area of the land, population, and government systems. It is a very useful source.

        This encyclopedia has much information about Greece such as the land, population, and the history of it. The problem of this section is that it mainly focuses on the present day Greece but not the Ancient Greece.

         This section of the Columbia Encyclopedia is about the origions of the Ancient Greek culture and some Mythological gods and goddesses. These are some very important background information.

Lumiansky, R.M. ˇ§Greece.ˇ¨ The New Encyclopedia Britannica: Micropaedia. Volume 5. Page 454-463. 15th edition. 1998.

            This is the basic overview of the whole Greece world, from the ancient times to nowadays. The facts are very strait out. Most of this is talking about the Greek religion, which is somewhat resourceful for this project.

Segal, Charles. ˇ§Greece.ˇ¨ Encyclopedia America. Volume 13. Page 360-441. 5th edition.2001.

            This book is very resourceful and helpful. It labeled the different subjects of the Greeks into chapters so we can eliminate the chapters that we don't need. The life of ancient Greek women is mentioned as well as examples from different city-states and different times in history.

        This is another costume page, so I didn't bother to read it, since costumes aren't very important for me in my project. So I just got a picture from the website. It's a painting on a plate of a hetarae serving a man.

        I didn't read much of the website, but I did get this really good picture of a pottery showing men with hetaraes by their sides. Probably, they're aristocrats, out for a political meeting.

 This website has a couple of paragraphs about the rights and responsibilities of women in Ancient Greece. Lacks information and not a very good site.

     This website gives us all the information we will need to know about women in Ancient Athens. It tells us their roles from a young child to a women. This whole thing is about what life is like in Athens, so it's different from the other city-states such as Sparta and the normal country villages.
