A more than mere mortal man with little possessions wanders a desert, spending all his time helping and saving others, spreading a crazy message about love and peace. Everyone he meets is touched and changed. He has a special interest in children, but there are those who want him for dead. He has a group of followers going wherever he goes, and near the end of his story, carries a cross on his back that will allow him to save mankind. Is this Jesus H. Christ, or Vash the Stampede? Can’t tell the difference, can you?

Trigun, a western anime filled with Christian references that are never explained. Here is a rundown of the references, symbols and allusions:

Sin – it should be known that in Trigun, taking life is the representation of all forms of sin.

Vash the Stampede – Jesus Christ
For reasons as mentioned above. Also, in episode 25, Vash is tortured by his enemies. Christ's enemies asked him who He is, and his one and only response that day was "I am who you say I am." Vash's only response to his enemies, when they wondered whether or not this was really the Stampede, was "I am... I am him, I am Vash the Stampede."

Millions Knives – Eve, Satan
-Eve
See “The SEEDS Ships” analogy below.
-Satan
The rival of Christ in the struggle for the souls of humanity, much the same is Knives’ the rival against Vash for mankind’s future. In the end of the series, a cross-bearing Vash confronts Knives. The two duel it out to the death. If Vash wins, mankind is saved, and if Knives wins, mankind is doomed. In the end, Vash lies on the floor beaten, bloodied, and about to die, with Knives presiding over him in triumph. Much the same way Satan did over Christ as he died on the cross, mankind’s chance at salvation gone. But in one last move, Vash picked up the cross (Cross Punisher) and defeated his brother Knives. In the same way, through the cross Christ defeated Satan and resurrected.

The SEEDS Ships – Eden
The SEEDS Ships are equipped with a holographic rec room, commonly portrayed as a vast garden, with an apple tree in the center. Much in the same way, Eden was a vast garden with an apple tree in the center. Vash, Knives and Rem spend time in this place on a daily basis. When Knives kills the spider, breaking the one and only rule Rem places on Vash and Knives, she is shocked with horror. Much in the same way, God was angered when Eve broke his one rule: don’t eat from the tree. When Knives’ downfall begins (Knives’ haircut scene), we find a bitten apple by his feet. A series of events that all began with Knives’ breaking Rem’s one rule leads to the destruction of the SEEDS ship, leaving Vash and Knives to fend for themselves in a wasteland. And so Eden was lost to Adam and Eve because of Eve’s sin, and they were cast into the wilderness alone.

More of this coming soon. Especially a long bit on Wolfwood.
