Stupid Aggravating TestThat dreaded 4-hour gauntlet of darkening bubble after bubble while scrambling your brain if you should mark A or E. It’s that time of year again, time for the SATs, which by the way, don’t stand for anything anymore. Most are still waiting to take it. That group is in luck – some of us have gone and taken care of the beast already. Being one of them, I will grace your eyes with a complementary reaction and tip-sheet in preparation for the Stupid Aggravating Test. As you’ve all been informed, the SAT this year sports the brand-spanking new essay section. At first, you worry. Essay? I hate those. My English teachers make me write them, and they’re hard. The SAT essay is different though from say, 5 paragraphs on the theme of The Scarlet Letter. It gives you a broad topic that more or less you’ll be interested in writing about. Ours was: do you think there’s enough creativity in the world? It’s a subject we all have a passionate say on. Think of your favorite bands or movies, and how creative and interesting the people behind them are. The SAT essay also doesn’t force you into any kind of structure. Sure you need an intro, a body, and a conclusion, but as long as you make good sense, there’s no need for you to follow a strict 8-sentence paragraph form. Then there’s math. Fun, I’m sure. The math is nothing more complicated than Algebra 1 and Geometry. Don’t think of it as a math test, because it’s not. It’s a test with math questions on it. Don’t spend 3 minutes trying to solve the problem algebraically when you could spend 2 minutes figuring out what they’re asking for and plugging in the provided answers until you get the right one. Also, little known fact, your proctor isn’t allowed to touch your calculator. As in, he can’t look at what programs you’re using. Wink wink. Critical Reading can be as easy as you make it. When it comes to reading passages, the questions they ask are pretty simple as long as you don’t overthink because of stress. Just read the passage and try to understand it as you go. Do NOT read the questions beforehand, it wastes time because you won’t remember most of them as you read. The only hard part of the Critical Reading is filling in the blanks. More than likely you’ll come across words you won’t know. A good thing to do to prepare for this is go down to Borders, buy an SAT Prep book and study the vocabulary section. Lastly, the Writing section. This comprises mostly of figuring out the error in the sentence or paragraph. Read it out loud to yourself. 90% of the time, the error will sound wrong and you’ll have the answer. When it comes to revising a sentence that’s grammatically wrong, a common theme I found was that the right answer was mostly one of the shortest. Brevity is important. In the end, the SAT is nothing more than a stupid test. Many people have led happy, fulfilled lives after scoring a 1400. Don’t stress it. Just do what you can, prepare for the worst, and hope for the best. For more information about the SATS, visit: College Board Official College Board SAT Guide Kaplan SAT Guide The one I used.
