Gojoe

In my endless search for great movies, I recently rented this movie from Blockbuster. By no means was this engaging, nor thought provoking, nor exciting, to say the least. I wasn't moved in any way. But one thing is for sure: it was funny as hell.

First of all, allow me to explain the premise: a demon haunts the Gojoe bridge and beheads all who try to cross it. A monk named Benkei gets a revelation from Buddha that it is his destiny to kill the demon of Gojoe bridge. He knows this revelation is true because of the markings Buddha left on his chest (though it looked very much like skin cancer to me. Sorry Benkei).

That said, blood sprays everywhere in a comical fashion whenever a head falls off, much like in Kill Bill. I know Eric would get a kick out of that. But the funniest bit of this movie was it's subtitling. I don't know whether it was the scratches on the dvd, but... well, you saw the example I gave. Subtitles were late, or early. At one point in the movie Benkei and his sidekick were sitting on a roof talking quite nonchalant. Subtitles came on such as "Push, push, its almost out! Ah, blood! Push, PUSH!". A few minutes later, a scene began where a woman was giving birth.

All in all, a decent movie. Even better when you count it's humor value.

As a Movie: 5/10
For it's Subtitles: 7/10
