Tabitha didn't remember much after she went into the operating room for the C-section, except that she had a little boy. Three hours later, she was still a little groggy when everyone came to visit her. She was lying in bed holding her little boy that she had christened Adam Jacob, when Justin and Lance came in with Ariel.
"Hey Tabbers, how are you feeling ?" Justin asked as he kissed her on the cheek.
"I don't know. A little confused, I guess. Do you want to hold Adam ?" she replied as she held Adam out to Justin.
"Sure. Come here little guy," Justin cooed.
"Thanks for being there with me," Tabitha said, turning to Lance who was standing quietly in the corner.
"It was nothing," he responded with a shy smile. "I'm just glad that you two are OK."
"What's going to happen now ?" Tabitha asked no one in particular.
"What do you mean ?" Justin questioned as he handed Adam to Lance. Lance looked a little uncomfortable holding Adam, but he rocked him back and forth while he stood in place.
"I mean, what's going to happen with Darden ? What's going to happen to me and Adam and Ariel ?" The questions tumbled out one after the other from Tabitha's mouth.
"Tabs, you're going to be fine. Don't worry about all of this right now. You need to rest and take care of yourself and Adam," Lance answered her as he laid Adam in her arms.
"I need to talk to Darden and find out why he made all of those accusations. He's never been jealous of you before."
"Maybe it's because we've never have a civil conversation until today. I think he felt threatened by me because you weren't upset that I was around," Lance explained.
"When can I talk to Darden ?"
"I don't know. I'll call the police station and see if he's being released on bail or anything," Justin offered. He pulled out his cell phone and left the room.
"Tabitha, I'm really sorry about everything that's happened," Lance apologized. He felt like he'd need to apologize a million times before he would stop feeling guilty.
"Lance, stop apologizing. You were there for me today and that meant a lot. I don't think that you being here was the whole reason that Darden got so angry. He'd been acting weird for a long time and I was starting to get creeped out by it, but I didn't have time to find out what was going on because I was too busy."
"He didn't say anything about what was bothering him before ?"
"No. He was so excited about Adam, in fact he's the one that picked that name out, that I didn't question what was going on. Like I said before, I thought it was just anxiety about being a father. He and Ariel are really close, but having a child that he fathered was going to be a completely new experience for him."
Before the conversation could go any farther, Justin reentered the room. "Well, the police need to talk to Tabitha before they can press charges against Darden. He's just being held until Tabitha is able to tell them what went on."
"I want to talk to Darden first. I don't want to say anything to the police until I talk to him," Tabitha insisted.
"I had a feeling you were going to say that so I got permission for him to talk to you. Here use my cell phone and push redial. Then ask for Sergeant Michaels and tell him who you are. He already knows why you're calling."
"Thanks Justin," Tabitha smiled as she took the phone from his hand. She pushed redial and waited impatiently for someone to answer. After being put on hold several times and being questioned by Sgt. Michaels, she finally was allowed to speak to Darden.
"Hello ?"
"Hi, honey, it's me. I think we need to talk about what happened so I can get you out of there," Tabitha stated firmly.
"What's there to talk about ? You're cheating on me and I hit you for it. You deserved what you got. I know you're going to press charges so that you and Lance can get back together."
"Darden, I don't know why you think I'm having an affair because it's simply not true. Lance was only here so I wouldn't be alone while I was waiting for you. I don't want to press charges, I just want to know what's going on with you."
"Fine, then tell the police that you're not pressing charges, and let me get out of here. I want to go to my lawyer first thing and draw up divorce papers."
"What ?? I can't believe that you would divorce me before you even listened to what I had to say !" Tabitha screeched.
"I've listened to enough of your lies, bitch ! I'm not listening anymore !" Darden shouted as he slammed down the receiver.
Tabitha handed Justin's cell phone back to him without saying a word. She cuddled Adam closer as tears began to fall down her cheeks. Justin and Lance watched as she whispered something to Adam that made her cry harder. They decided that they should leave her alone for a while, but as they were walking out the door, Tabitha called out to Justin.
"Justin, can you stay for a minute ?"
"Sure. Lance, I'll meet you downstairs in a few minutes." Justin waited until Lance was gone and then moved closer to Tabitha. He took Adam from her arms and laid him back in the bassinet. "Tabbers, please don't cry anymore. I know that this is a lot to go through, but you'll be fine. You've gone through worse stuff and survived it."
"I know, but I can't believe this is happening to me again. Is the father of my child going to leave me every time I get pregnant ?"
This question left Justin speechless momentarily. He hadn't seen the situation in that light, but what she said was true. Lance had left her when she found out she was pregnant with Ariel and now Darden had left her just before she gave birth to Adam. "I promise you that this isn't going to happen every time. I think Darden just needs to calm down and then he'll come to his senses."
"I don't know, Justin. I've never seen him that mad before and he's never called me names like that. I'm afraid that even if he did calm down now, that he might hit me or one of the kids the next time he gets mad."
"What are you going to do then ?"
"I just don't know. I guess I'm going to have to press charges for the kids' safety and I'm going to have to grant him the divorce. If he doesn't want to be with me anymore, then I can't force him."
"Good point." Justin hugged Tabitha tightly and kissed her on the cheek. "Why don't you get some rest and I'll come back and see you later ?"
"OK. Can you call Sgt. Michaels and tell him that I want to press charges ? I already told him my version of the story because he wouldn't let me talk to Darden until I talked to him."
"Sure thing. Can I ask you one more thing ?"
"What is it ?"
"What did you whisper to Adam a few minutes ago ?"
"Oh that. The same thing I told Ariel when she was born."
"Which was ?"
"I told him his name and that I was sorry that his daddy wasn't here, but I would take care of him the best that I could."
"Of course you will. You're the best mom I know and you know that we'll all help you out anyway we can."
"Thanks Jujubee."
"You're welcome."
As Justin walked out of the room, he was met by Lance. "Sorry, man, but I just had to listen in on the conversation."
"Yeah, I figured that you were. It's OK though because I think you needed to hear what she had to say too."
"Yeah and now I feel like a jerk for leaving her like that. Not that I didn't feel that way before, but now that this has happened, I feel even worse."
"Lance, you can't blame yourself for what Darden did. I think that they've been having problems for a while, but Tabitha couldn't admit it and she thought that having a baby would help things out. She's mentioned to me before that Darden was always a little jealous, although he would never really admit it, that Ariel wasn't his daughter. He treated her like she was his own, but he was upset because Tabitha wouldn't let him adopt Ariel."
"Why not ?" Lance was astounded by this piece of information.
"I don't know. Something about having raised Ariel for four years by herself and not wanting to diminish that. You know how Tabitha is. She's determined to do things without any help and with no one else to take credit for her accomplishments."
"Wow. I had no idea that Darden hadn't adopted Ariel."
"Yeah. Well, I think we should let Tabitha get some rest and talk over things with her tomorrow," Justin suggested.
"Good idea."
