The Hill station of Mussoorie discovered by the British army officer named Captain Young. The beauty of the hill station impressed the military officer a lot and he finally made up his mind to reside at the place, in the year 1825. This is how the hill station of Mussoorie was founded. Colonel Everest chose to stay here and built a home in 1832. More and more British officers followed suit and by the year 1901, the population of the hill resort was 6,461. During summers, the population of Mussoorie swelled up to a total of 15,000 at that time.

Mussoorie is one of the most impressive hill stations in the northern India. A number of modern bungalows, malls and sprawling gardens dot the landscape of the hill station, from one corner to the other. Hordes of tourists, both locals as well as foreign nationals, can be seen flocking to the hill station during summer months when the northern plains begin to burn with sultry heat. Mussoorie is closely located to Delhi is also not far away from Hindu pilgrimage destinations like Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Haridwar and Rishikesh.

During 1920s and 1930s, the Nehru family became the frequent visitors to Mussoorie. Nehru's daughter Indira Gandhi also spent much of her time at Mussoorie. During their visit, the members of the Nehru family also visited the hill station of Dehradun, which was just closeby. The Tibetan Government in Exile was alsoestablished by Dalai Lama in Mussoorie first, after fleeing Chinese occupation of Tibet in April 1959. Today, around 5,000 Tibetans are residents of Mussoorie.

Tourism is the most significant segment of Mussoorie's economy. It has a nature walk known as "Camel's Back Road". This road takes its name from a rocky outcrop in the shape of a camel's hump. Along the road, a cemetery is located about mid-way on the loop. There is also "Gun Hill" where a cannon was used to sound out midday for many years. Gun Hill is accessible by the cable car on the Mall road. The oldest Christian church in the Himalayas, St Mary's, is situated above Mall Road, and is currently undergoing restoration. Kempty Falls is a nice picnic spot. Company Garden is popular tourist destination. During season, the Company Garden has a vast collection of flowers and plants. Happy Valley has a small Tibetan temple. This was the first Tibetan temple built in India. The temple was constructed in 1960 by the Tibetan refugees. Lal Tibba is another tourist spot of Mussoorie. Picturesque Dhanaulti hill station is about 32 kilometres from Mussoorie.
