K'ven stood, looking at Tirzath. "Well, are you clean NOW Tirzzy?" he asked impatiently. Tirzath, eyes whirling idly, gave a dragon snort and rolled into the water, sending bubbles forth. "I swear, sometimes I just want to KICK him..."
Kylia grinned at him. "You might as well, you wouldn't hurt him." She stood and pulled the sleeves of her shirt back down.
"Hmm, well, I'd be scared stiff if I did something to him. You know how it's like, they just trust you so much." K'ven sighed. "But..."
He was interrupted as M'ran strode purposefully towards them. Both riders greeted him, nodding, and he grinned more broadly. "K'ven, I have some good news, and some bad news."
"What's the good news?" Kylia asked, her eyes shining playfully. Something told K'ven she already knew.
"You've been chosen as Wingleader, K'ven." K'ven stared, open-mouthed, as Tirzath crooned proudly, still half-submerged in the water.
"Then... then what's the bad news?" he stammered, still shocked.
M'ran laughed as he handed him a badge. "You've just gotten loaded with five times the responsibility!" He waved to them and walked away, as K'ven nearly dropped the badge.
"Wingleader?" he said, more to himself. "Me? I can't... I can't do that..."
Kylia tilted her head. "He wouldn't've chosen you if he didn't think you could do it."
K'ven turned and put his hands on his hips. "You already knew it, didn't you?" She giggled, putting her hand over her mouth. "Answer me, Kylia, rider of Trymmeth!" She burst out laughing and ran, waving helplessly, to her weyr. He sighed and turned to Tirzath, remembering his childhood dream to be a bronzerider Wingleader, and save Pern during Threadfall.
"...Five times the responsibility, eh? If anyone, I bet Tirzath and I are just the ones to do it!"
