My ancestors were from the North of Ireland... so I've tried to learn a bit about it and try to figure out why they fight so much. I believe the basic reason that they fight is differences in religion. You know-- the Catholic and Protestant thing. I may be wrong. Hope that Fenian Mac doesn't come after me if I am!
Oh, and I'm Catholic (to the very core). Just to let you know:o)
Sunday Bloody Sunday Hey, it's me again... That U2 song might be of some help to explain the troubles that the North of Ireland suffers. It's a good song from an absolutely awesome band:o)

The troubles in N.Ireland have little to do with religion and more to do with bigotry and civil rights violations brought on by the English(or those simpathetic to their cause. Also, the way they treated the Catholic Irish as inferiors has created an environment of intolerance and violence.
Slan,
Beth

| My question was actually about this: rubytuesdayschild
(32/F/Nearby ........) 4/18/01 7:59 pm
I was told by someone .. hehmmmm .. someone, I say .. no names being mentioned .. that most of the Catholics are in the South of Ireland and I wanted to know what buggering strange madness it was then that all you ever hear about is them being in the North.
Then I decided I would just go make fun of Texans instead, even if they do send me naked pics, and ignore every-fucking-body else. Especially as some people don't like to be sexually harassed and are therefore just not as much fun as others.
If any of this starts to make sense, please let me know and I will come by and post something to muck it back up all good and proper.
Also, I want to hear johno's version. I want to see how it agrees with Seamon Brophy's. Or whatever his name is.
Goodbye!

My that Ruby is a brilliant lady, full of scintillating questions. Just earlier today she was questioning me on the Holy Grail. Something like .. let's see if I can remember the question ... "Where in the holy fuck all is a glass ... how in the Christ do you expect me to get any water ... what is this, the bloody search for the Holy Grail ... find me a glass, okay, jerk face dog?"
Uh errmmmmm .. on second thought .. that might not have been ... never mind

The thing is, when I was in Texas .. yes, God help me, I was in Texas ... everyone in Garrison hated that town. They were bored, annoyed .. wanted to move to Houston or Dallas. But everyone I met in Houston or Dallas wanted to move to a small quiet town where they didn't have to be scared and jaded anymore. Quite a lot of them wanted to move to Alaska, a desire I tried to nip in the bud as quickly as possible. Quite a few Alaskans (so called)wanted to move any place warm, but preferably Hawaii and all the damn Samoans were moving to Alaska. No one was happy where they came from, some of them were happy where they got to but most of the time none of the feelings really lasted.
WHy? Pesimistically: We could say all places suck equally once you get to know them.
* ** Optimistically: When you are used to living somewhere you take things for granted and need the reminder of new eyes seeing your old turf to bring back the beauty of your world to you.
* This is why I :1) Think that tourists should actually be government sponsored. Not only would they a)remind us what there is to love about where we are they would also b) make us thankful that soon they would be going back where they are and we get to not have to go with them, c) give us someone new to shag, thus keeping the gene pool fresh and sparkably sippable,d)provide excellent target practice and e) remind us, through their whining, just how suck the rest of the world can be if you want to let it, so there is really no point in moving.
No, skip, d). Sorry. Most of the reasons to government sponsor tourists is so that a)they will all be herded into small, manageable groups and thusly 1) make it less likely that anyone wants to use them for target practice and 2)keeps everyone from accidentally running into the stray tourist who has managed, somehow, to camouflage themselves as a real person and has now tricked you into giving them your cigarettes, and, since they bought you a drink, are forcing you to listen to their own personal 12 step program which is SOOOO different from AA or anyone else. Nothing ruins a good drinking session like a bloody AA lecture! and b)I feel this is best expressed in a song ... drive em in, round em up, head em out, Rawhide ...
** This is also why I feel that all optimists should be rounded up and shot at dawn. I mean who in the hell needs drivel like that being spouted at them non-stop? Round em up, line em up, pop a cap, Rawhide ...
Pshaw .. you know you love me!

wait wait wait... didn't know you speak Italian! well... are you trying to tell me that Milan is better than Ireland??? come here and then we'll talk about it again... ^_____^ isn't as good as it may seem, you know. anyway... about your questions, I stuyd Vet. Medicine and I'm on my 4th year. I should grdauate in 3 years and then I'll attend a post-graduate degree in Dublin (UCD) on Equine Science or anything that has to do with horses. I've got many friends in Ireland but i've been there just one time, last summer (well... students always have to deal with MONEY problmes..) ^____^
so, by now i just plan about spending holidays in the isle. Last time we had so much fun coz it was my first trip on the road :o)))
wish i could move for good and stay there for the rest of my life! what i like the most in Irish is that they are friendly and always happy! well.. that's my conclusion after the trip.
peace/love/happiness

Alleged Friendliness rubytuesdayschild
(32/F/Nearby ........) 4/28/01 11:43 am
Hmmm ... the tourists have descended upon us in all their multicoloured-cultured-faceted hordes. Tossing food wrappers carelessly aside as they waddle down the street and complaining about the general messiness of the State. Speaking loudly, like madmen, telling each other everything they think they know about Alaska. Some of it is actually quite cute. I can't blame them for liking the place. I do. But, then, they say what it perhaps the silliest thing of all. "Alaskans are so friendly!"
If you meet someone friendly here, let me assure you, they are not Alaskans. Either that or you are misinterpreting their attempts to humor you until you go away. Alaskans freshly off a bout of cabin fever are an exception to the rule .. they will be friendly to anyone. Anyone at all. Even Texans.
Perhaps that is where tourists become confused. But, no .. most of the people who smile and wave and say a cheery hello as you waddle down your street are not Alaskan but only Americans who live on the same piece of ground.
We used to sit out in the yard, because we didn't want the foreigners (Texans, Alabamans, etc) in our house, around a fire .. and listen to them drone on about how neat, clean and friendly Alaskans are .. and we would be whispering back and forth ... "What do you suppose those words actually mean where they come from?" "If WE are friendly, what the hell has the rest of the world come to?" and "Hah! Do you think if we pushed their face in the fire, they would think we were friendly still."
I know this has nothing to do with Ireland. I don't care either. I'm a rebel, I tell ya!
I've decided to take a new tact this year. Instead of standing behind them and wishing I could push them into traffic, I shall walk beside the tourists and dress tacky, spend too much money, and insist on believing Alaskans are friendly. It is all madness, but at least they appear to be having fun.
