7/17/2000 Today's News

Well it has been a week since my last news update, well there really hasn't been any official news. On the FOT Clans things are starting to heat up. The Golden Blade Clan has come out swinging and Dimension-7 is now housed over at Vault 13.

The Black Company is also drawing a lot of knew members also. People are already gearing up for killer multiplayer action even before the game is released.

This of course bodes well for the success of the game.

New Screenshots from Fallout Tactics are available at the Interplay Fallout Tactics Website. The game is looking really sharp if you ask me.

They also included another shot of the Humvee and the Tank. Cool stuff!

Robin from Microforté posted this information about the AI. Yesterday and apparently I missed it. So here it is.

Firstly, I guess I should introduce myself.I am a senior programmer for Microforte, working on BOS.I am responsible for a selection of cool stuff such as combat, physics, misc engine, criticals, and AI.

As you could imagine I dont get much time for reading news groups (or
sleeping, eating, and breathing for that matter). So I wouldnt post too many questions aimed at me, seems Chris has it covered anyway (swear he must have 5 sets of hands!).

Q. How are you going about giving the AI tactics? A. The AI is made up of two major components. An individual 'intelligence' that controls a single unit. It chooses to do things based on its personality like run away, pick a descent weapon, and chew gum. Lately its been fresh out of gum. 

There is also a controller AI that acts exactly like a player controlling a squad. It recommends places to go, things to see and people to kill. Its essentially the tactics controller for the group. An enemy (or friendly) force is made up of numerous personality AIs and any number of controllers.

Q. Are your programmers researching historical battles or current military
protocol (in case we ever have to fight humanoid creatures, which I hope we
will)?
A. Documented historical battles operate at a strategy level, whilst BOS
operates on a smaller tactical level. Also a phalanx unit is no match for a
BOS minigun.

 In essence the tactics for BOS AI comes from the BOS game mechanics moderated by the intelligence, skills, personality, and equipment of the units.

Q. So how exactly does one get to ask the AI progammer?
A. I know of several blood rituals that are known to summon them, but just make sure you put enough caffiene/nicotine in the room or they tend to lose control and go on berserker killing sprees.

Chris Taylor - Interplay  Answered two large batches of questions today on the old board.

1. Will their be a world map? And will it work the same way as in FO 1/2?
A. Yes. Some differences, but close.

2. Can we still PIP?
A. Yes.

3. How large will the cities be?
A. Hmmm. They range in size, but are comparable to previous Fallout titles. There are also elevations in cities now.

4. Will their still be stores, or will we get all we need from the BOS bases?
A. Merchants, yes. Equipment comes from a variety of sources.

5. Will people beable to get out of destroyed vehicles and continue to fight?
A. Depends on how the vehicle was destroyed, yes.

6. WIll their be areas of BOS bases that are off limits to people that don't have enouth skill/rank?
A. ICATATT.

7. Will your team members be under your control, or will they act like NPC's in FO 1/2?
A. Your control.

8. Do we get weapons and armour right away, or do we work for it?
A. Some, yes. Not the good stuff. You have to work for that.

9. Can we crash our vehicles in to other vehicles, and can we crush cars with tanks?
A. Yes. Define "crush"?

10. Can we drive tanks through buildings?
A. No. Those flimsy stucco walls have been sprayed with AMCO's Tank Repellent 2000.

Q. Will there be any possibility for fitting weapons upon vehicles, like maybe a machinegun or a beatiful flamethrower?
A. Some vehicles come equipped with weapons, yes. Some vehicles may be equippable or upgradeable.

Q. And combatdriving ( Driving while in engagement with enemies.) ?
A. Yes.

Q. And will there be any Eastern Europe weapons in BOS like versions of the ak-47,-74 or AKM, and the Dragunov sniper rifle?
A. Quite possibly, but we haven't released the weapon list.

1:) I know this isnt the fo2 board but...What do you mean (chris your name is i think)by "down to earth weapons"?
A. More realistic weapons (ie, AK47), more projectile weapons, less energy weapons.

2:) Will there be random encounters/antics in the game?
A. Yes.

4:) what interface will it be... like Panzer general type strategic simulater. or like the fo2 interface?
A. FO1/2 style, with some enhancements and changes for squad control.
