To defeat evil, you must become evil
0127 Aug. 29

Angelfire's ad code gets around Ken's fix after the brower cache is filled with the site's images. The problem is that the ads appear as iframes, with their position and content dynamically controlled by javascript. Thus, to slay this evil and prevent the further spread of communism, I will de-construct Angelfire's javascript and counter it with a javascript of my own. It won't be easy, but nothing worthwhile ever is. But in the end, justice will prevail and the streets will run red with the blood of Angelfire's admins!

TO VICTORY!!

Soul Calibur...
1217 Aug. 29

...is a damn sexy game. Then again, you already knew that. So here's something you didn't know: the folks who said the PS2 version had "slow load times" and "terrible slowdown" are fuckin' off their rockers. The only thing I've seen that's an issue -- and you gotta look for it -- is the textures, which obviously ain't the 'Station's strongest point. They're not bad ( hell, they're amazing...like Xenosaga sexy ), but put side-by-side with Big Green and Little Square, they look a good deal less detailed.

But that's nit-picking. The majority of games available these days for anything look hella-nice, and Soul Calibur 2 is no exception. Just buy it for whatever system you prefer, and get ready to waste a lot of time...

By the way...

Speaking of anime...
0047 Aug. 26

I almost forgot to be pissed about this: Koukaku Kidoutai: Stand Alone Complex has been licensed for distribution in the US. That means, no more fansubs of Ghost in the Shell TV :(

At least, I think its been licenced. The group handling the fansub (anime-kraze) said this on their main page:

We are sad to announce that we have dropped our Gundam Seed, and Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex projects due to the demand of Bandai Entertainment Inc. Marketing department employee of Bandai Entertainment Inc. requested that we drop the two projects. So any questions//inquiries regarding this matter will be ignored, and if asked on the chat channel, will results in a kick and maybe even a ban. We ask for the cooperation of all fans to not ask about this topic. Thank you.

I'm thinking Bandai finally caught wind of these high-quality fansubs and figured "hell, we might want to sell this stuff to those gaijin...better scare those kids with a Cease and Desist order." It wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened. Anybody remember what happened to that Quake3 mod "Bid for Power?"

Ah, well. I like GitS, so I'll likely buy the DVDs whenever they do get put out anyway. I'm kinda worried though; it makes sense for Bandai to distribute Gundam stuff in the US, but what the hell are they doing with the Ghost rights? Maybe I'm reading it wrong?

And there's...how many episodes of this?
0047 Aug. 26

Who saw the first episode of the new season of Inuyasha? Yeah, me neither. I saw the end credits after I got out of the shower and it jogged my memory. I think we got something like 30 or so more episodes.

"What do you mean by that?"
0447 Aug. 24

It can't be just coincidence; in one week, a total of four people have referred to me as "long," and no they weren't talking about the equipment. Instead of tall, I'm somehow long. What the hell? What does that mean? Cats are long, people are tall; I've never considered myself a tall person, since I'm only around 5'10" or so, so how can someone describe me as "long?" Am I a friggin' snake or something? A bishoujo character, maybe?

Looks fun...

I like building resin kits, but the cost is just way too damn high for me now, so I just look at them instead. This one looks nice; good detail.

It feels good to program something that works
2007 Aug. 21

I've finished the "EventBuilder" tool I needed for that RPG I'm doing. Over the course of programming this game, I had to create five mini-progs to create the necessary data files for the game. Those are called tools. I'm damn proud of them all, too, because they are what make it possible for this game to be so modular. I wouldn't be surprised to see a mod of it in less than an hour after I release it; its so easy once you have the tools.

I just thought I'd share this little bit of news with you kids because its the most important thing that's happened with the development of this game thus far. The EventBuilder is what generates the eventwad.dat file I'm storing all the game's events in. Everything, from story branches and dialogue, to battle encounters and boss fights are in that file. Thing like items and player-specific or enemy-specific attacks go into other special files, but eventwad.dat is what drives the game. It was the one major hurdle I had left, and now its behind me.

All that's left is enemy AI, finalization of story events, and art assets. I'm pretty sure I can do that in relatively little time. I'm still wondering, though, when I get this finished, who's going to test it? I don't want some imbecile on the net to pick it up, play it for two minutes, and email me with "It sucks" for a subject line.

"C'mon, rookie"

I've just gotten out of my second class of the day -- CMSS 3501 - Creative writing -- and I'm feeling pretty damn good for once. The class is basically a study of different forms of creative writing ( like poetry, short fiction, screenplays, etc. ) and all that's required of students is a project for each genre we study. We read a poem, we do a poem. We read a story, we write a story. We read a screenplay... ah, you get the idea.

I looked around the room as the Professor ( a woman, I might add ) was explaining all this, and smiled with a quiet satisfaction at the moans of dispeasure just about everyone else let out at the news. The Professor asked what the problem was, and several people responded with " I didn't know this class was so intensive." Psh. 'They're all weakest," I think. I do this kinda thing on a dialy basis just for the hell of it, so for me the only question was "what do I pull from my portfolio at the house and bring in?"

Hell, that's why I took this class to begin with. Easy A, baby.

And just as I think that, trhe Professor says something that puts an even bigger smile on my face. "Basically, if you do all the work, you should come out of this class with at least a C. To get an A or a B...that's when we get competative. The best student will get the best grade."

What'd I hear? "Rob will get the best grade."

Am I full of myself for thinking that? Nah. I'm a realist; I know when I'm outclassed, but the opposite is just as true: I know when I outclass others. This is one of those times when I outclass others. Its good to know that I have at least one easy class out of the five I'm taking this semester. I'm anxious to see how the C++ class here at Clayton State compares with the one at Tech. It couldn't be any worse.

( Remember the YodaSpeak translator we had to write, Paul? )

I'm cured...
0107 Aug.18

As strangely as it started, my ( real / unintentional ) insomnia has ended. It technically ended last night, as I was able to stay asleep for more than a few hours, but I say it's been cured tonight because I actually feel like I can fall asleep. See, insomnia is a weird thing in that you feel tired, but not sleepy. You want sleep, but you just can't do it; its an entirely unique feeling like nothing else. Tonight though, I actually feel sleepy, so I can comfortably say the insomnia is gone. For now, anyway ( knock on wood ).

Where've I heard that voice before?

Turns out the english VA for Faye Valentine has been in more than I've thought. Check it out

. . . again
2214 Aug.16

I am still so damn tired. On the bright side though, I finally caught Discovery's "Anatomy of a Shark Bite." Pretty nasty stuff. The infamous video of that guy getting his leg bit in waist-deep water is actually rather horrific in its entirety. It was so nasty, I had to remind myself that this was real, and not some hollywood puppet. Its not everyday you see someone get all the meat stripped from their leg like that, you know?

I am so damn tired.

I still can't sleep
0436 Aug.16

I used to kid around about being an insomniac, but this time I'm serious. I literally have not been able to sleep for the past 3 nights. I can get myself to drift off for about an hour or so, but I keep waking up for no reason, and just getting to that point is hard; I have to do those meditation excercises they tell you to do in stress management classes. Of course, the fact that I have to try so hard to fall asleep just brings on more stress, and so the vicious circle continues and in the end, I'm left feeling crap-tacular all damn day.

White noise helps, but I can only leave my fan running for so long before I start getting too cold. I've been leaving my computer on, and that helps a little, but not enough. It said that sudden bouts of insomnia like this are usually brought on by an emotional trigger, but dammit I am El-friggin-Negro...all my emotions except anger have long since withered and died. By all rights, this shouldn't be happening to me.

And before anyone suggests it, I have tried those "Unisom" caplets, and they don't work. At all.

I wonder how much longer it'll be before I start talking to my imaginary buddy Tyler.

Unexpected productivity

I managed to get more done this past week than I thought I would, case in point I'm actually done with the new pic of Ai two days in advance. She said she felt like getting a makeover for the fall, so I worked my magic, and here we have the end result. Ai says she's happy with the new look, but I'm kinda on the fence about it. I like it, but her hair's a lot harder to draw, now that it has all that extra body and lift.

I was planning on saving this redesign of our girl until the debut of that summer project I'd been going on about, but since that didn't happen I guess this was just as good a time as any. And speaking of that project, I've decided to completely change the format. Instead of doing a simple webcomic, I'm gonna re-format it to become a flash-based animation. That's right: animation.

But don't get your hopes up too high; since I don't have an army of Korean animators at my disposal, it'll consist mostly of sliding stills, sort of like the intro for streetfightercomics.com. It'll still have word ballons and such for dialogue, but the end result should come closer to the cinematic vision I had for this project from the start. I'll have to teach myself Flash in the meantime, but that's something I've put off doing for too long anyway.

And as a side note, if any of you out there are up to it, I'm currently looking for someone to assist me in the graphics development for both the summer project and/or the RPG I'm working on. I can't pay jack squat, but its fun, and a good way to advertise your skills. If you're interested, drop me a line at edenxiii@hotmail.com.

...that when you have a lot on your mind, its next to impossible to get to sleep?

Another thought...
0116 Aug.12

Some days start good, others end bad. Some days begin funny, and some close on a sour note. The worst days run the entire gamut.

I guess that's why I'm a night person; can't have a bad day if you sleep through it all.

She's getting old...

I think we're about due for a new pic of Ai over there to the left, don't you? Gimme about a week.

I let Ken play a little of Sexy Beach today, and it occurred to me that the game can really only be but so fun if you can't understand what's being said. For me, Sexy Beach is a solid game with surprisingly well-written dialogue, and an Adult Swim-esque self-mocking overtone. The game is pulp, sure, but it recognizes this and just runs with it, and in the end it works. But in the hands of someone who doesn't get japanese, it's just twenty minutes of camera-panning for ten minutes of nekkid.

In retrospect it seems like a no-brainer that you'd have to be able to understand the dialogue to get the story, but that just completely didn't cross my mind until today. Then again, I don't know if it would've helped if the thing was english. I think folks would've bawked at the game just because the thing has titties in it. Ken was cool with it -- big props to him -- Stef was a little caught off-guard, but just about everyone else in the room at the time did their damnedest to avoid even looking at it. You'd think we were watching that stileproject video of those guys cooking and eating a cat or something.

I mean damn, people, its...just...boobs. If that's all it takes to make you blush, you'll insta-nut at some of the crap I've got on this hard drive. Hell, maybe I oughta let borrow a Zane novel sometime...

Greatest...game...evar ( not really )
0346 Aug. 08

Two days ago I fired up IRC on a whim to see if anyone had set up a decent fserve for a game I'd been looking for since last October. I look, and look, and look some more, and after about an hour of channel hopping I found one. The game was broken into three .rar files, averaging 600 megs each. Back when I was first hunting for this game, getting it at the house would have been impossible, since we only had dial-up at the time, but now that I'm DSL-powered I hunkered down and and started the transfer.

By the next day, I'd gotten all three files ( after numerous resumes -- I swear, people should limit the number of users on an fserve, not the bandwidth ) and got ready to burn it all to CDs. I opened up the first of the .rar files and realized I was sadlmy mistaken: this wasn't three CDs worth of data, it was one DVD. For a minute, I was stumped. I racked my brain trying to think of anyone I knew -- or any business -- that had DVD-burning capability. It seemed hopeless, and the prospect of finally finding the game I'd been searching for but having no way to play it was starting to really piss me off.

Then I remembered a prog I'd seen in some of the w4rez channels I'd been in, VirtualCD or something like that. I started looking, and fifteen minutes later I had it downloaded and cracked. The prog acts as a virtual drive, allowing you to load a disc image ( called ISOs -- its basically one big file that represents exactly what the data on a CD or DVD looks like in binary ) into it and running it as though it were a physical drive. I tried it on the ISO of my game, and I managed to get the installation started, but for whatever reason VirtualDVD couldn't process all the files, and so the install failed over and over.

Remember how I said I was getting pissed? It came back after that. I hit up IRC again, this time asking around to see if anyone else had this problem, and lo and behold I just happened to catch the man that uploaded the game in the first place. I ask away, and he tells me I should be using a prog called Daemon-tools instead of VirtualDVD. I say thanks, and go hunting for Daemon tools.

Six minutes later I had it downloaded, but there was no need to crack it; it was free for non-commercial use. I try it, it works, and now I'm finally playing the game I've been searching for for months. Oh yeah, you're probably wondering what game it is. Its called Sexy Beach. Ever hear of a japanese developer called Dreams? No? What about Alicesoft? No? Well then I don't know how to explain what sort of game this is other than it is what DOA Beach Volleyball would be if you took out the volleyball altogether and gave it an AO rating.

What? Don't look at me like that. Its fun, dammit.

: )

Raise your hand if you saw the premier of FLCL on Cartoon Network.

A thought...
0057 Aug. 04

I'd be the wrong guy to give telepathic powers. See, I wouldn't bother going around reading people's minds -- since, given the fact that most of what people say is utterly banal, most people's thoughts are probably likewise insipid -- but rather, I'd play with people. I'd convince some star football player that he was a quadrapalegic, or make a member of some boy band think he was deaf; you know, some really ironic shiznit.

After a while, I'd crank it up a notch and pick some random, power-hungry schmo. I'd convince him that he had powers, and make all his plans and schemes work. Then, at the height of his rise -- just when he feels as though his life is perfect -- I'd drop the illusion. Reality would come crashing back down on him, and he'd lose everything...the funny part being that he never really had anything to begin with.

But that's just me. I'm mean like that.
