FLCL joins Cartoon Networks's Adult Swim block starting Aug. 04. What's FLCL, you say? Well, if you have to ask, you're probably not a genuine anime fan. I'm curious as to what all has to be cut from the show to make it on the air over here, and I'm even more curious as to how much of the humor of the show will be lost in the dub ( which is why I'm against dubs so wholeheartedly in the case of comedies ). Meh.

PS. I know Pioneer decided to call the show "Fooly Cooly" for the US release, but only silly gaijin call it that. Just like those damnedable "Samurai X" people.

Sexy...kinda

Nagehame has a photo collage of most of the characters in SvC: Chaos under Demitri's "Midnight Pleasure" super. If you've never seen this move in action, it changes his opponent into a hot ( or not-so-hot ) chick for a few moments. If his opponent's already a girl, then she becomes an even hotter one. My only question? Why is Choi so atrractive?

At the risk of sounding like a pimply-faced fanboy, I'm soooo looking forward to Innocence, Production I.G.'s quasi-sequel to Ghost in the Shell. The whole thing's under tight wraps right now, and what little info there is on the thing comes from Production I.G.'s official site, which happens to be in very kanji-heavy japanese. Sorry kids, I'm not so versed in the language that I can even begin to translate it. Oh, if only I hadn't wasted a year-and-a-half studying mandarin...

Summer Project?
1746 July 28

I've moved the project's debut to next summer. I'm not making enough progress on it right now to get as much done as I want before I get back to the RPG I'm doing, so I'm shelving it for the time being. I'll start work on it again in the spring, so that way I'll have a substantial amount ready to go by next summer.

The biggest problem is the fact that I've run into a snag in the later parts of the script, and with a limited series that's a real big deal. If the story isn't paced right, and if the characters don't come across as "real," then the whole thing's gonna fall apart. Rather than let that happen, I'll just take some time off from thinking about it, and then I'll see what I can come up with in a couple months.

Of course, there's always the possibility that I'm just not cut out for a project like this. Its nothing like the sutff I usually do; my stories typically involve death, destruction, carnage, and angst. I'm more Ridley Scott than Monty Python, I guess. Wind, waves, an Ai is pretty light-hearted, with a good deal of fan service, and while I can do the latter, I'm not too confident about the former.

Its always the one you least expect...

I was grading some of my old comics in preparation for an ebay auction and I came across the most amazing thing. A good few years back, Image put out a three-issue stand alone series called Spawn: The Impaler, a comic that takes place in the modern day as Vlad the Impaler returns to earth as the next hellspawn. It was unique in that the whole thing was painted, as in the artist doing the book actually took paint to canvas to create the art. I bought the first issue, read it, and although I could appreciate how unique the thing was ( very few American comics are done in this way, but in Europe its all the rage ), didn't really like it. It remained in my archives for years.

Flash forward to today, and the comic was one of the first I chose to get rid of. I toss the thing onto my bed alongside about 60 or so others and started grading. I expected to get somewhere around cover for it, but I find out that Wizard rates its value at $35. Thirty-five-freaking-dollars!! That might not sound like much, but the prices in Wizard reflect the average value of a comic in near-mint condition, and my comic -- having been left untouched for years in a protective backing and polybag -- is immaculate. This means that I stand to get 150 - 200% percent of the guide value, ie. $70. I could make even more if I get the thing CGC graded and certified, possibly pulling maybe $90 or $100 from this one comic!!

As soon as all this hit me I very, very carefully, put the comic down on my desk and backed away slowly.

I then proceeded to simultaneously crap and nut my pants.

How about that?

In the summer of '97, I went to my second JROTC summer class and took an Air Force personality test. It wasn't one of those hokey little horoscope deals either, becasuse this was a test used by the personel of the air base the camp was held in, and was a strong factor in determining who was assigned to work where. I guess the idea was to keep conflicting personality types from having to work together, but why they let a bunch of kids take the test is beyond me.

Anyway, I just found my results buried beneath a bunch of old essays and CAT-5 cables, and it struck me as uncanny how accurate they were. The report is broken into three sections, each explaining a different facet of my personality, but I think the last section -- Personality Characteristics -- sums everything up quite nicely. Check it out:

  • Flexible - You can adapt your thoughts and lifestyle to meet a variety of situations.
  • Uninhibited - You are open, free from normal society restraints. You make your own decisions and moral judgements, and live by your own rules.
  • Delegate Detail - You like to let others perform detail work, rather than let your performance be hampered by minor interferences. You prefer to work in generalities and let others work out the system.
  • Independent - You are self-governing, free from most outside influence and the constraints of others.
  • Commanding - You tell rather than persuade. You take charge and expect your orders to be followed.
  • Fearless - You do not bother yourself with possible outcomes if you meet with failure, but rather, proceed as if you will undoubtedly win.
  • Cynical - You tend to be doubtful of the motives of others, at times mocking or scorning their ethics or goals. You are wary of business transactions that hint at being "below board."
  • Superior - You desire to have a higher ability, rank, and nature than the "average worker." You feel superior in capability than most people.
  • Sharp - Your comments and dealings are direct and to the point.
  • Realistic - You look at the world with literal truth, being neither optimistic nor pessimistic. You see things "as they really are."
  • Private - You enjoy time alone, either by yourself or with a very close loved one or friend. You don't like to be "on display."
  • Reserved - You practice self-restraint; you are not out-going in manner or speech.
  • Earnest - You are determined in your actions, feeling deep sincerity and seriousness in what you do and promise.
  • Contemplative - You consider and study your actions.
  • Hasty - You move quickly, withou pausing to consider the results of your actions.
  • Driving - You push forward forcibly, eliciting work and participation from yourself and, if necessary, others as well.
  • Seek Change - You look for change and variety in your work. If you find none, you will tend to create variety.
  • Impatient - You have little time for "plodding methods" or slow workers. You feel the need to get things done.
  • Abrupt - You act unexpectedly and sudden. You are curt in your dealings with others, in an attempt to avoid wasted effort.

There are two items I don't feel are really right, but on the whole this thing is spot-on. That last bit about being abrupt, especially. I've made so many people mad at me for that without even realizing it, and when I think about it, I guess that's why its so hard for people to warm up to me. Oh well, screw 'em.

Man, oh, man...its no secret I've got a really weird day/night cycle, but I like to sleep at least 6 hours for every 18 I'm awake. I didn't get to do that Friday, nor Saturday, but dammit: I'm going to tonight.

*looks at clock*

...Crap. Now I have to choose: get some rest, or keep coloring the next Diner Comic?

I'll give 1.4 million zeni to whomever can correctly translate what Ai is saying. I'll throw in an additional 600K if you can point out the grammatical error I made.

No, really

If you've ever considered youself a friend of mine, then if you should ever find me married -- or worse, married with children -- I ask that you kill me dead on the spot, no matter what I say. I'll do my damnedest to avoid such a fate, but should it ever happen, I want to be able to depend on my people to deliver me from that hell.

This was cute at first, but the second time I watched it I was kinda scared. I think it might be because of that cat that keeps walking by...
